The Ti-Ni phase diagram has been investigated up to 68 pct Ni with iodide titanium base alloys by metallographic, X-ray, and melting point methods, and from 68 to 90 pct Ni by examination of as-cast structures of sponge titanium base alloys. NVESTIGATION of the nickel-rich portion of the I Ti-Ni phase diagram was first reported by Vogel and Wallbaum in 1938.' This work was subsequently extended to lower nickel contents by Wallbaum' who indicated the possibility of a eutectic reaction for nickel contents below 38 pct. Long et al.3 studied the titanium-rich portion of the phase diagram and found eutectic and eutectoid reactions below 38 pct Ni. However, the temperature of the eutectic indicated by Long et al. was considerably lower than that suggested by Wallbaum. Long and his coworkers synthesized their alloys by powder metallurgical techniques and encountered oxygen and/or nitrogen contamination. Thus the diagram which was obtained did not represent binary alloying conditions. However from these results the features of the binary diagram were predicted. At Battelle Memorial Institute4 the Ti-Ni diagram was investigated up to approximately 11.5 pct Ni with sponge titanium alloys. The range of temperatures used was not sufficient to define the eutectoid temperature or composition. The data of Wallbaum2 and Long et al.8 were of particular interest for the present study, and although the work was originally concerned with the region below 40 pct Ni, the investigation was extended to higher nickel contents in an attempt to resolve the differences between these workers. Experimental Procedure Preliminary work on the Ti-Ni system was carried out with duPont Process A sponge titanium alloys to reduce the amount of subsequent work to be done with iodide titanium base alloys. The sponge titanium used contained 99.71 to 99.77 pct Ti, 0.1 pct Fe and 0.005 to 0.009 pct Ni. The iodide titanium obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. contained 99.9 to 99.95 pct Ti. Nickel used with sponge titanium was 98.9 pct pure. The high-purity nickel alloyed with iodide titanium was cobalt-free with approximately 0.05 pct C and was obtained through the courtesy of the International Nickel Co. The 15 g sponge titanium charges for melting were prepared by compacting in a die or by placing the weighed portions of nickel and titanium directly into the furnace. Iodide titanium charges were made by drilling holes in the as-received rod and inserting the nickel or by wrapping the nickel in sheet. Sponge titanium alloys containing from 0.2 to 90 pct Ni and iodide titanium alloys containing 0.2 to 68 pct Ni were prepared by these methods. In addition to these alloys several 1/2 1b sponge titanium alloys were supplied by the Allegheny Ludlum Co. The charges were melted in an arc furnace under an argon atmosphere. The procedures used were similar to those reported in the literature5,' and the furnace has been described.' Except for iodide titanium alloys with 40 to 68 pct Ni (see section on copper contamination), each alloy was melted for 1 min, then either turned over or broken before re-melting for an additional minute. Currents of 200 to 400 amp were used depending on the melting point of the alloy. Prior to heat treatment, alloys containing less than 14.5 pct Ni were hot-forged at 750°C. With the exception of alloys in the homogeneity range of the compound TiNi, alloys of higher nickel contents could not be hot-forged. Heat treatment of iodide titanium base alloys was carried out in argon-filled quartz capsules which were broken under water at the conclusion of heat treatment to quench the specimens. Temperatures were controlled to ±5oC and annealing times up to 48 hr were used. For melting point determination, specimens were placed in carbon crucibles which were in turn en-capsuled in argon-filled quartz capsules. The start of melting was determined by rounding of corners and by metallographic examination. Complete melting was considered to have occurred at that temperature at which the specimen assumed the shape of the crucible. Specimens were prepared for metallographic examination by mechanical polishing or by an electrolytic procedure." For alloys containing up to 80 pct Ni Remington A etch7 50 pct glycerine, 25 pct HNO,, 25 8 HF) was used. For higher nickel alloys aqua regia and Carapella's etch (5 g FeCl,, 2 ml HNO,, and 99 ml methyl alcohol) were employed. Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approximately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segregation. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. J. H. HEGINBOTHAM, a, metallurgist of the General Engineering Co., talked on "Current Milling Practice at Kirkland Lake," at the December meeting of the Utah Section. The ore is enough alike through the whole district so that some generalizations and comparisons may be made. The question as to whether or not the flotation process should be used in the flowsheet for extracting gold by cyanide solutions is still being vigorously debated, and it will seemingly need some years for a definite answer to be given. Most of the gold is either free, though much of it is finely dispersed in quartz, or occurs with pyrite. At times there may be 2 per cent of telluride compounds in the ore, but the amount of gold telluride present is small and has not been definitely established. It has been shown by Dr. Haultain and others that though gold tellurides may be so finely disseminated that it is necessary to grind the ore exceedingly fine, the compounds themselves are not difficultly soluble. (An increase in temperature helps to dissolve tellurides, and also to settle pulps.) It is likely that if the ore were ground through 400 mesh, practically all of the gold would be soluble. Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely different materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

This paper is a review of Montana reverberatory smelting practice covering a period of approximately fifty years, during which time the small furnaces that had been in use elsewhere for a century or more, without much change in size or method of operation, were revolutionized and were developed into the huge, continuously operating furnaces of today. A study of Montana practice is particularly instructive, since reverberatory furnace smelting for the production of copper matte received more attention there than in other smelting centers and many of the improvements that finally resulted in establishing the preeminence of this type of furnace over the blast furnace originated in Butte and Anaconda. The material in this paper was gathered from original sources, wherever possible, and all of the illustrations were made from original drawings, some of which have been simplified and worked over so as to be better adapted for reproduction. The aim has been to trace the modifications in design and operation which took place during the period in question—the reasons for the changes and the results achieved through them. For developments during the first twenty years, the technical literature of the period was freely drawn upon, but I am particularly indebted to W. M. Kelly, general foreman at the Anaconda Works, whose recollections and personal experience extend back to the early days. I wish to acknowledge the use made of publications of E. P. Mathewson, William Wraith and L. V. Bender, as well as information obtained here and there from friends and associates. The resume of Great Falls practice was compiled from correspondence, notes and drawings found in the files of the old Boston & Montana Co. and the tabulations showing the performance of furnaces at Butte and Anaconda are adapted from plant records and correspondence in the files of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The paper deals with some interesting comparisons that were made between furnaces operated under various conditions in connection with the Carson Case, and results obtained when using natural gas as fuel. This part of the paper may be considered original to the extent that these results have not previously been published.

INTRODUCTION For various reasons I have not specified the locality where the research indicated in the following pages was undertaken. It will suffice to say that it was on the grounds of a villa once remote from, but now completely surrounded by, its neighboring city, and in close proximity to an industrial establishment of great extent and importance manufacturing many kinds of steel articles and employing upwards of thirty chimney-stacks for power and process work. The problem was to discover the cause or causes of the mortality to trees and plants on the place, and to trace these causes to their origin. Before undertaking this experimental work, the bibliography accompanying this paper was compiled and studied. It appears from an examination of the careful scientific work performed by the ablest French, German, and English chemists during the last 25 years that they are unanimous in assigning the principal-in fact, the overwhelmingly predominant-cause of the destruction of vegetation to sulphur oxides, resulting either from direct- oxidation of sulphur in oil of vitriol works, etc., or from the oxidation of the sulphur from the minerals associated with commercial coal. Schröder and Schertel showed in 1884 that the sulphates deposited upon the leaves are not injurious to the plants; and Freytag proved that free sulphuric acid could not be found

THE solidus line above the solid solution field in the lead-antimony system was originally determined by Dean and his associates1 from heating curves. They did not regard this line as having been accurately fixed and in their more recent publications2 the curves drawn do not follow closely the original data. The precise location of the solidus line is of importance in the extrusion of lead-antimony cable sheath, as the temperature of the metal in this process must be less than the lowest temperature at which any part of the alloy in the lead-press charge becomes liquid. It is very desirable, however, to operate at as high a temperature as possible, as the rate of extrusion for a given pressure is approximately doubled for an increase of 10° C. in temperature. The precise location of this line is also important, in the investigation of ternary systems of lead, antimony and a third metal. For these reasons, and because of the differences reported in the literature, data were secured on the lead-antimony solidus line by the classical quenching-test procedure.

The Precambrian of Midcontinent United States includes a metamorphic belt of probable Middle Precambrian age, a belt of Keweenawan volcanics and sediments, and widespread igneous activity that extended from Iowa to Texas. Most of the present structural configuration of the Midcontinent was developed by epeirogenic movements during the Paleozoic. The dominant elements are basins and arches. Three major metallogenic provinces occur in the Midcontinent. They include the Missouri Precambrian iron ores, the Lake Superior copper ores, and the Mississippi Valley lead-zincbarite- fluorite deposits. Several large iron deposits, occurring in rhyolite and andesite host rocks, are known. Both discordant massive bodies and replacement- type bodies occur. The iron deposits are believed to have been formed during the period of igneous activity. They are essentially the same age as the volcanics and older than the granites that intrude the volcanics. The Lake Superior copper ores include two established districts, the Keweenawan district and White Pine, and the copper-nickel deposits in the Duluth gabbro. The lead-zinc-barite-fluorite deposits include four major districts, Southeast Missouri, Upper Mississippi Valley, Tri-State, and Illinois-Kentucky, and at least eight minor districts. Ore may occur in stratiform deposits and in veins. The major districts all contain stratiform deposits, but several have produced appreciable quantities of vein ore. Only vein deposits are known in some of the smaller districts. The major features of all districts can be catalogued in terms of host rocks, structural patterns of districts, types of ore-bearing structures, and mineralogical characteristics. From these features, a Mississippi Valley type ore body, in its type area, can be defined.

Solid-solubility relationships in the Pseudobinary systems UAS-UP, UAs-US. UAS-UC, aid UAs-UN were investigated. The first two systems exhibit complete mutual solubility, whereas the component compounds in the other two systenzs are immiscible. The above information, together with solid-solubility data joy six additional pseudobinary systems , were analyzed for compliance wilh the Hurrze-Rothery rules for rnetallic systems. The relative size difference of the component nonmetal atoms was found to be the dopainant jactor determining the extent of solid solubility between the NaC1-type uranium compounds. The anionic and covalent radii of the nonmetal atoms appear to be inadequate for these systems, but compuled radii based on rare earth compounds yield consistent results for the uranium compounds. THE actinide elements, like metallic elements of the transition and rare earth series, readily form binary compounds with nonmetallic elements of groups IV, V, and VI of the periodic table. Of particular importance are the NaC1-type equiatomic compounds with carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and arsenic. The uranium members of this family of compounds have high melting points, are essentially stoichiometric, and exhibit various amounts of mutual solubility. Thus, they are of interest for investigating the factors governing the extent of solid solubility. Previous investigators have determined the solid-solubility limits in the pseudobinary systems between the compounds UC, UN, US, and UP. Anselin et a1 .' reported complete miscibility in the system UC-UN. Baskin and shalek 2 and Allbutt et a1.3 reported that UP and US exhibit complete mutual solubility. Shalek and white4 reported partial miscibility in the system US-UC. At 1800°C the maximum solubility of UC in US is 40 mol pct, but that of US in UC is 4 rnol pct. shalek5 found limited solubility in the system US-UN; the maximum solubility of UN in US is 11 rnol pct at 1800°C, while that of US in UN is only 0.3 mol pct. White and askin 6 found very limited miscibility in the system UP-UC at 1800°C. Approximately 7 mol pct UC is soluble in UP, but there is no solubility of UP in the monocarbide. Phase relations in the pseudo-binary system UN-UP were investigated by askin.' Approximately 0.7 mol pct UN is soluble in UP at 1800°C, while UP is immiscible in UN. The present study was carried out to explore the extent of terminal solubility in the systems UAs-UC, UAs-UN, UAs-US, and UAs-UP. This information, combined with existing data, provided a sufficient basis on which to determine the factors governing solid solubility in pseudobinary systems containing NaC1-type uranium conpounds. I) EXPERIMENTAL 1) Materials. The compounds UC and UN were obtained from the Kerr-McGee Corp. and United Nuclear Co., respectively. The US, UP, and UAs were synthesized by reacting finely divided uranium with H2 S, pH3, or AsH3 gas at low temperature (300° to 500°C), followed by homogenization in a vacuum at moderately high temperatures (1400° to 1700°c).8-10 The materials were essentially stoichiometric, with the exception of UC, which exhibited a C/U ratio of 1.05. Oxygen was the major contaminant in these compounds, ranging from 0.05 wt pct in US to 0.30 wt pct in UC, and it was generally combined with uranium to form UO2. The UO2 content in these materials was usually of the order of 1 wt pct, and did not exceed 2 wt pct. Furthermore, no evidence was found for a high-temperature reaction between uranium dioxide and any of the compounds. Chemical analyses of equilibrated compositions in the systems UAs-UP and UAs-US showed that the non-metal atom to uranium ratios averaged about 1.01, and that the oxygen contents ranged from 0.06 to 0.22 pct. However, the small deviations from stoichiome-try or the presence of minor oxygen impurities do not invalidate the conclusions to be drawn from this study. 2) Experimental Procedures. The component compounds in powdered from were blended in the desired proportions for 5 hr in the ball mill that consisted of stainless-steel balls in a plastic container. Chemical analyses indicated very little metallic pickup from the blending operation and virtually no increase in oxygen content. The pellets were pressed in a 0.270-in.-diam steel die under 40,000 psi pressure. One wt pct of stearic acid dissolved in CCl 4 served both as a binder and as a die lubricant. Chemical analyses revealed that the stearic acid left no carbon residue in the sintered samples. The pellets were sintered in vacuum in an unsealed tantalum crucible. The temperature, measured with a calibrated optical pyrometer, was maintained at 1800" + 30°C for 3 hr. This was sufficient time for attaining equilibrium as no change occurred in either the lattice parameters or the sharpness of the X-ray patterns when samples were annealed for longer periods of time. The pellets were cooled with the furnace. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken at room temperature with a 114.59-mm-diam Norelco powder camera and CuKor radiation (CuGI = 1.5405A). Unit cell dimensions were determined from a Nelson-Riley extrapolation to the high-angle reflections. The values for were precise to k 0.001A. 11) RESULTS X-ray and met allographic investigation revealed that complete mutual solid solubility exists in the pseudobinary systems UAs-UP and UAs-US. The vecrystallization texture. formed by selective growth of random nuclei in an 80 pct volled 99.997 pct A1 crystal of initial orientation mear (123) (41.21 was found to consist of components related to the single-component rolling texture by 40 deg. rota-tiows around [111]axes. The relative-volume fractiovz of the various recrystallization-texture componezts may be accouzted for 012 the basis of the Lou) mobility of twist boundaries, if it is assumed that the mobility of the tilt boundaries also varies with their orientation. Similar results with a, aluminum-alloy cystal of the (110) [112] orientation, containing iron, silicon, and zinc, show that these solute contents do not impair the effectivezess of the oriented growth mechanism of re cry s-tallization- texture formation. In a previous investigation1,2 it was found that a sharp recrystallization texture is formed as a result of the oriented growth of random artificial nuclei in an aluminum crystal rolled to 80 pct RA, on the (110) plane in the [ 112] direction. Four recrystallization-texture components were found to occur, with orientations corresponding to 40-deg rotations around [111 1 axes of the deformation texture. Reorientations of this type were already found in earlier work,3,4 where the presence of random nuclei could be reasonably assumed, but was not rigorously documented. The same orientation relationship was found also by Lucke and Liebmann, who actually measured the orientation dependence of boundary-migration rates in the recrystallization of A1 crystals slightly deformed in tension.5,6 The occurrence in the recrystallization texture of only four of the eight crystallographically equivalent orientations of the type referred to above remained unexplained,1,2 although it was clearly not a result of the absence of suitable nuclei. Recently Burgers7 suggested that this effect may be due to the aniso-tropy of boundary mobility observed2'6; it was found that the recrystallized grains of the 40-deg [111]-rotated type grow much faster in directions perpendicular to the [ 111] they have in common with the matrix than parallel to this direction, i.e., the tilt boundaries have much higher mobility than the twist boundaries. THE erroneous, but until recently widely prevalent, belief that iron castings were first made in Europe in the fourteenth century has been adequately refuted in a number of earlier papers;1,11,12 but except for an unpublished metallographic study by the late William Campbell, and a phosphorus analysis by T. A. Wright of the metal of the Han dynasty cast-iron stove described by Laufer,2 nothing was known of either the chemical composition or the metallographic structure of the metal of any ancient iron casting, although data on castings of recent manufacture are abundantly available. The metal of the stove, which had been buried in a grave for at least 15 centuries, was so corroded that it seemed inadvisable to publish the results on it until more and better specimens from other ancient castings could be obtained. During a journey through China, extending from Peking in the north to Canton in the south and Cheng-tu, Ssu-chuan, in the west, in the late summer and autumn of 1936, one of us (T. T. Read) was fortunate enough to obtain, and bring home for study, nine castings, all more than 1000 years old, of which the date of manufacture is precisely known because of inscriptions cast in them, another that lacks a dated inscription, but of which the date, as explained below, can be otherwise established, and a specimen from the largest iron casting ever made," which is also dated. The period covered by this suite of specimens extends from 502 to 1093 A.D. In addition, a sample was obtained from a casting of date unknown, but which was certainly cast before 1000 A.D. and possibly as early as the third century A.D. A detailed description of these specimens is as follows: 1. 502 A.D. A pair (right and left) of recumbent lions (Fig. 1). Base 7 ¼ by 14 3/8 in., height over-all 5 ½ in., weight 26 lb. each. The translation of the inscription on the base is: "Made on the twenty-fourth day of the seventh month of the third year of Ching Ming of Great Wei" (Sept. 11, 502 A.D.).

In examining steel under the microscope, one is constantly confronted with structures that are difficult to interpret. Recently, in a collection of samples for exhibition purposes, the writer found a piece of open-hearth runner metal, 2 in. (50 mm.) in diameter, that had been fractured for use as a sample of cast-steel structure. On polishing and etching a section for the purpose of photographing a field to typify the microstructure of steel in the "as cast" condition, a variety of structures was found (Fig. 1) so arranged as to arouse interest at once. For a distance of about 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) from the skin of the runner, normal ingot structure was found (Fig. 2); this was followed by a zone, about 0.215 in. (5.5 mm.) wide, of considerably lower carbon content in which occurred a most pronounced Widmannstattian structure (Fig. 3); from this point on to the center of the runner, the metal was again of normal ingot structure (Fig. 4). Representative samples taken from the metal in the three zones showed the following analysis: Carbon Nickel Chromium Per Cent. Per Cent. PeR Cent. Metal from skin........................... 0.34 1.26 0.63 Widmannstattian zone.................... 0.21 1.18 0.63 Metal from center......................... 0.34 1.32 0.67 Such a condition might result from decarburization followed by recarburization of the skin. This section came from one of the branch runners to the bottom of the mold, not from the main runner, and it is difficult to conceive of decarburization occurring in this portion of a runner. If the metal were stripped while quite hot, some oxidation would take place but the recarburization is unaccounted for. It could not occur by segregation after solidification—the tendency then is for diffusion and homogeneity. The following seems to fit the conditions and is offered as an explanation. The outside layer of normal structure 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) thick was chilled on the walls of the runner brick when the molten metal first entered the runner. In parts I1 and II2 of this series, there were presented results of investigations on the age-hardening of an aluminum-copper and an aluminum-magnesium alloy. Georgia, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowledge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged. Production The discovery of gold in Georgia, in 1829, led to an influx of 6000 to 7000 miners and a production of over $200,000 in the following year. A branch of the United States Mint, established at Dahlonega in 1838, accounted for $6,115,569 up to the time of the Civil War. The output fluctuated greatly from year to year, with an all-time peak of $582,782 in 1843. In only one other year, 1845, was the half million mark exceeded. After the war mining began again, but 1883 is the last year for which an output of $200,000 is reported. Placers, always the main source of production, were yielding less and less, and in spite of increased quartz-mining activities the downward trend continued. The last year in which there was a production of $100,000 was 1902. In 1914, $16,270 came from 26 placers and 11 deep mines, with the latter reporting 1750 tons of $3 average value. In 1925, one placer and four lode mines that mined 8100 tons assaying $1.19 per ton produced $9500. One placer and one quartz mine, operating in 1930, reported a total output of $4194. Oil-field activities in Oklahoma made 1936 the best year since 1930. Approximately 2800 wells were completed, an increase of about 20 per cent over 1935. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission showed a total of 200,240,252 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1936. The assembly of a complete table of the oil fields of the state was not achieved, as many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are not complete, and data for the older fields will perhaps never be fully tabulated. Table 1 includes all of the new fields and most of the important fields of the State of Oklahoma. The outstanding developments of the year were: the discovery of rich Wilcox-sand production in the Moore pool; the spectacular drilling campaign in the Capitol or Mansion extension in the Oklahoma City pool; the surprising extension of the Olympic pool and the Hunton lime zone in the Fitts pool; and the failure to find more Ordovician production in southern Oklahoma. Wildcat discoveries, which were on a par with 1935, resulted in the discovery of such promising pools as Billings-Wilcox, North Bethel, North Earlsboro and North Lucien. The Fitts-Upper Simpson, Edmond, Jesse, Keokuk Falls and South Burbank pools underwent considerable development. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts area in Pontotoc County was greatly extended during the year and was the leader in drilling activity in the state. The producing limits were pushed to the east and north and the development of the Hunton lime horizon was outstanding. In the Upper Simpson zone 162 wells were completed; 137 in the Hunton lime zone and 26 in the Wilcox zone. The Oil Creek zone, a sand body below the Wilcox member, was discovered by the Magnolia-Statler No. 3 well located in the 1/4. 1/4 of sec. 28-2N.-7E. DURING recent years, there has been a material increase in the use of ferrophosphorus in the steel industry. It has been observed, when rolling sheets, that those made of Southern iron did not have to be rolled at as high a temperature as the others and, consequently, did not stick together. The reason was found to be the phosphorus content of Southern iron. It was therefore thought that an addition of phosphorus to sheet steel of other than Southern origin would give the same result as the use of Southern iron. At first, this addition was made by intro¬ducing phosphate rock in the blast furnace and reducing it together with the iron ore; but, because of the necessity for only small quantities of this grade of iron, the process was not satisfactory. The manufacture of ferrophosphorus was then introduced, so that additions might be made to the open-hearth furnace or ladle. Ferrophosphorus was first manufactured in the blast furnace. This method, however, can only economically produce a grade of product up to about 20 per cent. To produce a higher grade, it would be necessary to charge a larger proportion of phosphate-bearing material; and as the rate of absorption by the iron is low, there would be an increased loss of phosphorus oxides. This feature makes the production of a higher grade ferrophosphorus in the blast furnace uneconomical. The use of high-grade ferrophosphorus in the steel requires a smaller addition and involves, besides the economies in handling, an additional economy in transportation. The alloy with a higher percentage than 20 per cent. can be made only in the electric furnace. In the ordinary operation of the electric furnace in the production of ferrophosphorus, an alloy may be produced containing 26 per cent. phosphorus; this is the limit, for it does not seem possible to produce a higher phosphorus alloy even if large excesses of phosphatic materials are used. The reasons for the difficulty in raising this percentage of phosphorus are not known. The compounds Fe3P, containing 15.6 per cent., and Fe2P, containing 21.7 per cent. phosphorus, have been studied and it appears as if the alloy produced, containing percentages of
