A principal first-order and a minor summation term contribute to the solution to the discretized batch-grinding equation when formulated in cumulative retained mode. Depending on the inter relations hips between the selection and breakage parameters, the minor term may be advantageously modified in a number of ways. The reduced grinding equations thus obtained are solved by iterations to give relatively simple solutions which are tested against experimental data. The irn-plications and advantages of the reduced grinding equations are briefly discussed. Attention has been given to the sources and supply of the raw vegetal matter and the conditions of its submission to the process of sedimentation. An original and most valuable review has been made of the more important or significant chemical compounds originally contained in the organic dct,ris, and of the biochemical changes undergone by the latter during deposition. Consideration also has been given to the factors controlling the selective biochemical decomposition, in whole or in part, of this debris, and the deposition, as sediments, of the undecom-posed plant structures and compounds, together with more or less of the so-called "ulmic," or "humic," organic decomposition products in colloidal so1ution. Biochemical Changes End in Peat Formation The biochemical process terminates in the peat stage of coal formation, and with the cessation of this process organic sedimentation is completed. All subsequent changes result from geological causes and conditions. The deposits are in the form of peats of different types, organic muds, oozes, etc. They are essentially uncompressed and are wholly uncon-solidated, and their water content is great, amounting to over 85 per cent, near the surface of the deposit. Many of the chemical compounds remain as in the once living organisms; others are biochemically broken down and new ones formed. A new method for determining rock drillability in diamond drilling is discussed; the method takes into consideration both penetration rate and bit wear. The method is based on drilling a rock specimen under controlled laboratory conditions using a model bit. The technique used for determining the experimental variables is extremely simple, quick, and reliable. Drillability is then determined by the mathematics of drilling. In considering the different factors that affect diamond drilling performance, the nature of the rock to be drilled is of outmost importance since it affects significantly the drilling costs and such other variables as bit type and design, drilling thrust, and bit rotary speed. Many attempts have been made to study this effect by correlating actual drilling performances either to certain physical properties of the rock being drilled1-? or to test drilling data obtained under laboratory conditions.7-13 These attempts were aimed at providing a reliable method of predicting by simple means the expected rock behavior in actual drilling, thus giving the engineer a tool to use in estimating drilling performances and costs in different types of rock. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a method by which rock drillability (a term used in the technical literature to describe rock behavior in drilling) could be determined in diamond drilling. It is believed that the proposed simple and reliable method will cover the need of the mining industry for a workable method of measuring the drillability of rocks. It should be emphasized, however, that since drill-ability depends on the physical properties of rock and each drilling process (diamond, percussive, rotary) is affected by different or partly different rock properties,14-l6 the proposed method of determining rock drillability cannot be extended to the other drilling processes. The results presented in this paper form part of an extensive three-year research program carried out by the author in the laboratories of the Greek Institute of Geology and Subsurface Research. During this period the effects of the physical properties of rocks and of such operational variables as drilling thrust and bit rotary speed in diamond drilling were investigated in detail. DRILLABILITY CONCEPT The literature is not devoid of drillability studies. While there are a number of investigators1,3,5-7,9-0,12-13,17 who have attempted to establish by direct methods (i.e., drilling tests under laboratory conditions) or indirect (i.e., through a physical property of rock) an index from which the drilling performance in a given rock may be estimated, very few6-7,9,12, of the proposed methods seem to be of much practical value to the diamond drilling engineer and none to date has been universally accepted. Commenting on the proposed methods for assessing rock drillability, Fish14 remarks that "for a measure of drillability to be accepted it is essential that penetration rate at a given thrust and bit life are elucidated as otherwise the method is of little value." This statement should be examined in more detail by making use of the penetration rate-drilling time diagram obtained in drilling a rock under constant operational conditions. Furthermore, the merits of using this diagram to describe rock drillability will be pointed out. At the same time reference will be made to this diagram when discussing some previously proposed methods. Fig. 1 illustrates such a diagram for three rocks,A, B, and C, which have been diamond drilled under identical conditions. It is assumed here that rocks A and B have the same initial penetration rate, i.e., VOA = Vog, but since rock B is more abrasive than A, rapid bit wear occurs and as a result the fall of its penetration rate with respect to time is more vigorous than in rock A. This is shown graphically by a steeper V = f(t) (0 curve in this rock than in rock A. Rock C has a lower initial penetration rate, due to higher strength properties16 but since it is not very abrasive, only a slight fall of its penetration rate occurs during drilling (in this category are some limestone and marbles with compressive strength above 1000 kg per sq cm). It follows from the foregoing considerations that the characteristic for each rock curve (I) is a function of (i), the penetration rate of the rock Vo recorded at the instant of commencing drilling, which determines the starting point of the curve (1) on the y-axis and (ii), the abrasive rock properties which determine the rate of fall of Vo with respect to time. Thus, curve (I) provides an actual picture of the rock behavior in drilling for given operational conditions, and it can be used with complete satisfaction to assess rock drillability. In a brief summary of the many occurrences of fluorspar in our western states, it is not possible to go into detail in regard to the geology, mining and milling methods, and reserves about individual deposits. Rather a broad review is made of the occurrences and an analysis of how the western deposits may fit into our future domestic economy is presented. General Statement on Fluorspar Situation Fluorspar has been used for years as a flux in the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel, in foundry cupolas for melting pig iron, in the manufacture of opalescent glass and in the preparation of hydrofluoric acid. In 1880 the annual production of fluorspar in the United States was around 4000 tons per year. By 1900 it was up to 21,656 tons and between 1902 and 1908 it averaged about 40,000 tons annually. Prices were then so low, by present standards, that it seems impossible to believe now that mining could have been performed profitably at the price levels then prevailing. In 1890 fluorspar sold at the mines for $6.70 per ton, in 1901 for $5.81, in 1916 for 85.92. When the United States entered World War I, flyorspar production and price skyrocketed; the production reached 263,817 tons in 1918, with prices above $20.00 per ton, and prices were even higher in 1919 and 1920. After 1920, the domestic production fell from the 1918 level to about 125,000 tons annually and the average price dropped back to about $18.00 per ton. By 1935 the average price had fallen to $15.00, but in 1940 with a rising demand the average price of all grades had gone back up to $20.31. Today it is 75 per cent higher than in 1940 and presumably the price of acid grade at .least would be even higher if it were not for price ceilings. The first subsequent year that the domestic production exceeded that of 1918 was 1941, and the 1944 production is expected to exceed 400,000 tons, or over one and a half times that of 1918. In five-year periods, average production and imports were as are shown in Table I. Many people concerned with the consumption of fluorspar believe that the postwar period ahead will show a repetition of price trends of the last such period. They believe that imports will be again an important factor in the available supply and the price will fall back gradually toward the prewar level. The plastic flow of .molybdenum was studied in compression at temperatures below the ductile-to-brittle transition in tension. It was found that molybdenum is ductile in compression at all temperatures down to —196°C. The yield strength continues to increase with decreased test temperature below the tensile ductile-to-brittle transition temperature range. Difficulty was encountered in correlating the experimental data obtained with existing theories of plastic flow. THE body-centered-cubic metals as a group show a rapid and very large increase in yield strength with decreasing test temperature.' It is of fundamental importance to the understanding of the mechanism of plastic flow that this general characteristic be examined carefully. Unfortunately, brittle fracture in low-temperature tensile tests prohibits the measurement of flow properties at very low temperatures. By using compression tests, fracture can be suppressed and the plastic flow of the bcc metals can be studied far below their tensile ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. Molybdenum was chosen for this experiment and plastic-flow data were obtained down to —196°C.

Two new precipitation hardening copper-base alloys, Cu-1.5pct Ti-2.5 pct Sn and Cu-1.5 pct Ti-2.5 pct Sn-0.4 pct Cr were developed. High strength and medium conductivity are obtained by solution annealing and subsequent heat treatment. Combination of solution annealing, cold working, and heat treatment increases the strength further. Good elevated temperature strength and ductility makes these alloys superior to copper-beryllium-cobalt alloys. A considerable amount of research work is being done throughout the world to develop new and improved copper-base alloys. In many cases, the object is to develop alloys having a combination of high electrical and thermal conductivities, and high strength. The problem is complicated by the fact that any alloying element added to increase strength, invariably decreases conductivity. Among the few commercial precipitation hardening type copper-base alloys, the Cu-Be-Co alloys are best known. These alloys are used in many applications that require good spring characteristics cornbined with high strength and moderately high electrical conductivity. They can be formed readily after solution annealing, then heat treated to obtain high strength and conductivity. Because of the relatively high cost of the Cu-Be-Co alloys, considerable research has been aimed at developing new lower cost alloys having similar properties. The deposits described occur in a belt starting 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and extending 6 miles in a southeasterly direction. They are of the contact metamorphic type, being associated with a limestone and calcareous tuff that is interbedded with andesite tuffs and andesites which have been invaded by a quartz diorite intrusion. Of the fire occurrences examined, the largest can be traced for a horizontal distance of 2000 ft. No mining has, been done, but some of the outcrops lead to the belief that deposits of commercial size are present. IN CONNECTION with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,1 a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 1 ½ miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast. In the normal operation of a brass-rolling mill, sheet and strip has, for the most part, been finished in comparatively thin gauges, involving a substantial amount of cold-work and a considerable number of anneals. This condition has been disturbed by the preponderance of cartridge brass, which is not rolled to thin gauges, and particularly by brass for artillery cartridge cases, on which the mill may finish its work at a thickness between 0.400 and 0.900 in. Obviously, the amount of rolling and the number of anneals to which such a product can be subjected are small compared with strip that is carried to a thickness of a few hundredths of an inch. As a result, critical examination into the internal condition of metal has been made on an extensive scale at a stage of manufacture that would not, in normal times, have been chosen for complete inspection. Under these conditions, a type of defect has been recognized that is not seen at thinner gauges. It might be more accurate to call it the appearance of a defect, since it refers to an apparently laminated, discontinuous structure, which, in fact, does not exist as such, and disappears after suitable treatment. For this reason it has been called a phantom lamination, which the authors consider an appropriate term. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the phenomenon and the conditions of its occurrence and, at least tentatively, to discuss its nature and cause. Great numbers of phantoms may be found in 2:r brass, either hot-rolled or cold-rolled. They are also found in 70-30 brass, sometimes when hot-rolled and generally when cold-rolled. It is not believed that phantoms are confined to these alloys but this paper is limited to them for the purpose of description. Hot-rolled 2:1 Brass For illustration, therefore, a typical cake of hot-rolled 2:I brass has been chosen. This was rolled to a slab 36 in. thick, from a casting 5 in. thick by 24 in. wide by 18 in. high, which was believed to have been sound. After hot-rolling and cooling, the slab was sheared and a portion of such a shear cut is shown in Fig. I. It would be difficult to convince anyone viewing this specimen that the metal was not unsound. The impression would be confirmed by the appearance of a tensile break, as shown in Fig. 2. This is an ordinary tensile-test piece from metal just described. Although there was nothing in its tensile strength or elongation that suggested unsoundness, it appeared run through with pipes and laminations. To question the reality of such a condition would imply questioning the obvious. But, considering the history of the metal, it would be difficult to believe that it could be so bad as it appeared. It seemed reasonable, though, that if the defects were what they appeared to be, they could be traced back from the sheared or broken face.

The purpose of this paper is to review the history of the Drumlummon, one of the famous old mines of the West. Mining engineers, when sent to examine new mines in old districts, or, to decide whether an old property, under new conditions, will pay to reopen, have had difficulty in learning anything authentic regarding workings which are under water, and historical facts about the working character of the ore, the total production, and the value of the ore with increasing depth. 'Not many years elapse after the pumps are pulled, before maps, books and records are destroyed, and the value of the publications of the Institute would be increased if they contained the history of many old mines now abandoned. The unsuccessful efforts of the writer quite recently in trying to obtain reliable information about a gold mine which was reported to have produced several million dollars between 1880 and 1888, the workings of which are now partially caved and under water, impressed upon his mind the desirability of having a permanent record of old properties. In this particular case, the owners insisted that under present conditions of improved methods of treatment —particularly by the use of cyanide, which was not an applied process when the mine was operated, the property could be made to pay a handsome profit on ore left in sight in the old workings, but no assay records could be found to confirm these assurances, and even the records of bullion shipments had been destroyed. If surveys and maps were made as the work progressed, no trace of them could be found, and therefore opening of the ground through a new shaft and drifts therefrom would be attended by some risk while exploring near the old workings. Fatal accidents by flooding under these conditions have occurred, and as an evidence that miners have fears of such dangers, it was urged upon the Mining Committee during a recent session of the Montana Legislature, by a delegation of

THE WORLD Coal, as a source of energy and as a source of coke for the smelting of iron ore, has contributed significantly to the development of every major industrial nation of the world A number of other materials-oil, natural gas, wood, waste materials, water, and, in some applications, nuclear materials -can be used satisfactorily for the generation of heat and energy, but no generally acceptable and economic substitute has been found to supplant coke in iron ore smelting in conventional blast furnaces. In the development of many nations, coal provided the initial source of energy for industrialization Although coal provided more than 60% of the world's energy each year between 1902 and 1929, oil and natural gas have surpassed it as a source of energy in more recent years (Ref. 38, pp. 439, 441). Despite the rapid rise in importance of other fuels, a considerable amount of the total energy consumed is still supplied by coal. In 1972, coal supplied 32.1 % of the total world energy (Ref. 49, pp. 2-3). To produce this energy, 2.4 billion metric tons of coal were consumed-a 16.0% increase over the amount consumed in 1962. A further worldwide increase in the amount of coal used to supply energy is projected. According to Dr. Karlheinz Bund (Ref. 37, p 145), by the year 2000 world coal consumption could amount to 5 billion mt. Coal Resources and Production The world's coal resources are estimated to be about 10,872 billion mt. Of this amount, 1,297 billion mt are classified as measured reserves (Ref. 50, p. 57). In Table 13.A.1 the estimates of measured reserves and total resources, recent production, and the ratio of measured reserves to production of major coal-producing countries are shown. About 90% of the world's total coal resources are estimated to be in the USSR, the United States, and China. The United States ranks second in the world in coal resources, but in measured reserves, it ranks first. Because of the difference in rate at which available coal resources are being exploited, the ratio of measured reserves to actual production varies widely among areas and countries. France and East Germany have the lowest reserve to production ratios, 49.5 and 60.1, respectively. In Mexico, where currently less than 5 million mtpy of coal are produced, the ratio is 1257 For all countries producing more than 200 million mtpy of coal (except East Germany), the ratio ranges from 350 to 670. For the United States, the ratio is 669.7. In Table 13.A.2, distribution of the world's coal resources by area is shown. The disorientations between s?nall grains, whose growth has been arrested at an early stage of recrys-tallization, and the deformed matrix in cold-rolled aluminum single crystals were determined using transmission Kikuchi line and electron diffraction patterns. The orientations of the recrystallized grains were found to be random, and the disorientations of these grains with the matrix weve found to be intermediate to large. This leads to the conclusion that the observed vecrystallization began in small areas of large disorientation present in the cold-worked structure. heavily cold-worked thin sections of aluminunz single crystals and of polycrystalline aluminum and nickel were produced directly by a mechanical technique. The specinlens thus prepared were heated with the electron beam to bring about vecrystallization during observation in the electron microscope. Motion pictures taken du.ring heating and the electvon, microg.raphs taken both before and aftev heating allowed the recrystallization process to be traced to its ovigin. Re cvystallized grains originated in very s,mall regions of the cold-worked structure and developed through rapid migration of high-angle boundaries. The boundaries either were present as such in the matrix or were formed out of dense dislocation networks. SIGNIFICANT advances have been made in recent years in the study of nucleation of recrystallization using the technique of transmission electron microscopy of thin metal foils. Bollman1 in a study of heavily rolled polycrystalline nickel found support for the Cahn-Cottrell2,3 theory of nucleation. According to this theory nuclei form by the initially slow growth of subgrains formed through polygonization. During this initial period of slow growth (the incubation period) the migrating boundary of the subgrain increases its disorientation with the cold-worked matrix and thereby increases its mobility to become a rapidly migrating high-angle boundary. Bailey4,5 investigated the annealing behavior of several metals deformed both in tension and by rolling and concluded that recrystallization took place through the migration of high-angle boundaries. With low deformations these boundaries were present in the metal before deformation. With high deformation it was not possible to tell whether the boundaries were pieces of the original grain boundaries or were produced either during deformation or by polygonization during ameal- ing. Direct observation during heating of metal foils indicated that subgrains form by polygonization and grow at an uneven rate. The grain size obtained decreased with decreasing foil thickness indicating that the foil surface resists boundary motion. Votava,6 in heating stage experiments on rolled copper, observed nuclei to appear suddenly and grow in jumps of differing magnitude. However, he found no special dislocation configurations where the nuclei appeared. Fujita,7 as a result of a study of subgrain growth in heavily worked aluminum, concluded that the boundary of a recrystallized grain initially forms from the boundary of a group of subgrains. This occurred by a process of deposition of vacancies and dislocations in the group boundary as the boundaries within the group disappear. HU8,9 directly observed a similar process in heating stage experiments on 70 pct rolled Si-Fe single crystals. The growth of subgrains appeared to proceed by a coalescence mechanism. The observed fading away of the boundary between two subgrains was explained by the moving out of dislocations from the disappearing boundary into the connecting or intersecting boundaries around the subgrains. The subgrain size and degree of disorientation with the surrounding structure were thus increased. With the increase in disorientation occurred a corresponding increase in boundary mobility, which eventually allowed the boundary to migrate rapidly. This process was observed to occur within "microbands" consisting of parallel narrow segments disoriented by a few degrees present in the as-rolled structure. The conclusion of Rzepski and Montuelle10 that growth is preceded by the coalescence of blocks through disappearance of their common boundaries supports this view. In contrast to Hu's coalescence model for nucleation were the conclusions of Walter and ~och.""~ Working with the same material as Hu, of the same orientation and rolled to the same reduction, they concluded that nucleation occurred by the Cahn-Cottrell mechanism. They observed, in agreement with Hu, that recrystallization began in the "microband" regions which they referred to as "transition" bands. Bartuska13 studied subgrain growth in heavily rolled nickel using a beam heating method in the electron microscope. He concluded that nuclei for recrystallization form from the largest most perfect subgrains present in the cold-worked structure by rapid intermittent migration of parts of subboundaries. THE copper industry in the Province of Katanga, in the Belgian Congo, which is now controlled and operated by the Union Minere du Haut Katanga, had its inception many years ago in the vision of a Scotsman, Robert Williams, now Sir Robert Williams, Baronet. He it was who personally negotiated the mineral concession with King Leopold of Belgium, sent in the prospecting parties who located most of the present mines of the company, later arranged for the Belgian participation from which the present company was formed, and has been its active mentor ever since. The idea back of his efforts was the establishment of an industry on the Congo-Zambezi divide, of sufficient importance to draw up to it the head of the Cape to Cairo Railroad, the dream of Sir Cecil Rhodes, and the consummation of which he had left as a legacy to Mr. Williams, his successor. The reports of the prospecting expeditions showed that copper in profitable quantity was there, but many difficulties lay in the way of the establishment of the infant industry. The isolated location of the mines, various tribal wars, the Boer War, and many other factors contributed to making progress very slow. However, in spite of these difficulties the railroad was finally built and a blast-furnace plant erected at Lubumbashi, near Elisabethville, the capital of the Province. Operations of this plant were started in 1911, treating high-grade oxidized ores and producing pig copper by a reducing smelting. Production has been continuous since that time and the company has grown so that at present it ranks as the largest individual copper producer in the industry. It is a fitting monument to the foresight, optimism and driving force of its founder, and the progressive policies of his Belgian colleagues. In January, 1914, the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga engaged as its consulting engineer, Archer E. Wheeler, metallurgical engineer, at that time general superintendent of the Great Falls plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. It has long been accepted that blastfurnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirablc in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blastfurnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: . Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the pro duction of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. METALLOGRAPHIC specimens whose surfaces are to be investigated are too thick to allow either light or electrons to pass through them for microexamination by transmission. This difficulty is overcome with optical microscopes by illuminating the surface through the objective lens. For electron microscopes best results are obtained by preparing thin replicas of the surface of the specimen, placing them in the microscope and passing the electron beam through them. Since electron microscopes represent a rather recent invention, they have found little application as compared with optical microscopes. This is true because, aside from the cost of new equipment and development of new techniques, some of the older replica methods necessitated the destruction of the surface from which a thin transparent replica was obtained. In other processes in which the surface is preserved, either too tedious a procedure is required, unsuited to "mass-production " requirements of industrial laboratories, or replicas of insufficient contrast and sharpness are produced. In general, investigations with the electron microscope involve five steps: (I) polishing the surface of the metal specimen, (2) proper etching of the surface, (3) preparing the suitable replica from the surface, (4) examination and photography in electron microscope and (5) interpretation. PREPARATION OF METAL SURFACES Usual metallographic polishing is generally satisfactory. It is important though that the final polish be applied very care- fully, since otherwise evidence of a small amount of deformation might show up even on relatively deeply etched surfaces. A high-power microscope should be used to determine the suitability of the polish and etch. This, of course, is not different from optical examinations, but in these, if a deep etch is used, the problem is less serious. It is frequently difficult to detect with optical microscopes poor polishing aside from superficial scratches before etching. Figs. I and 2 show micrographs of "well" and "poorly" polished nickel etched by immersing the same for 20 min. in a solution containing 8 grams cupricsulphate in 40 C.C. of concentrated HCl and 40 C.C. of H20 (Marble's reagent). The sample shown in Fig. I was polished in its final stages for 5 min. on a carborundum wheel followed by 10 min. on a rouge wheel, whereas the sample shown in Fig. 2 was polished only I min. on the rouge wheel. Generally, this procedure does not guarantee that the surface of the specimen will be either undistorted or deformed. It was applied here merely to show the effects of good and poor polishing. INTRODUCTION The regional characteristics of porphyry copper deposits in South America southward from Pantanos and Pegadorcito, Columbia, will be summarized. The age of formation of deposits spans the period from the Permian to the present. Where possible, the general characteristics and the individual structural features of the deposits are integrated into the plate tectonic model. Individual deposits cited in this chapter, located in Fig. 1, are the best known and most fully described, and form the Andean copper belt (Peterson, 1958). Smaller porphyry copper deposits fall both east and west of the line of large, high grade deposits (e.g., Chuquicamata and Toquepala) that make up the spine of this belt. Most of those smaller deposits (e.g., Mi Vida [Koukharsky and Mirre, 19761) are omitted from Fig. 1 and Tables 1 and 2, however. Neither the Andean orogen nor the individual deposits within it are as well de- scribed in the literature as are their counter- parts in the Cordilleran orogen of North America. Therefore, generalizations relying on regional geologic mapping, geophysics, and isotopic geochemistry lack details pertinent to this type of deposit in the Cordilleran orogen. The South American porphyry copper province has been described by Hollister ( 1974) to include most of the Andean orogen excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry copper deposits have not been commonly found within the tin belt, although copper-tin (e.g., San Rafael, Peru) and copper-tungsten (e.g., Llamuco, Chile) de- posits are known. James (1971) shows the depth to the Moho to be appreciably greater where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from the coincident appearance of the tin-tungsten province and the inhibition of porphyry copper development where the sialic crust thickens. Dates on tin mineralization in this belt (Clark and Farrar, 1973) are similar to some dates for porphyry copper mineralization known else- where in the Andean orogen. It seems that some mechanism is needed to explain the geographic separation of porphyry copper- molybdenum and simultaneous tin-tungsten- molybdenum metallization within the same tectonic system and appearing at similar distances from the trench. The thickened crust of the tin belt is one of the few known differences. Tables 1 and 2 list some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but do not include Antaminas, Peru. or a number of other large skarn deposits

During the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Brownsville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to thechairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corporation, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which arc presented in this paper.
