Roof support systems have evolved from standing posts and timbers to a generation termed ?big nails? where steel bars are inserted into boreholes and anchored with expansion shells and/or resin cartridges. These systems have been effective but are limited to mining height. Additionally, the properties of steel do not resists shear forces or have the flexibility being required in difficult ground conditions. The next generation of roof support systems is coupling the best parts of the ?big nail? and resin grouted cable bolt systems. This paper will present the advanced technical solutions of the next generation of cable systems that includes an indented high-capacity PC-strand used with a variety of fixtures. Case histories of support applications will be presented.

"Dare-Zereshk deposit is one of the deposits supplies ore for Taft copper Complex in Iran Yazd province. This deposit is situated underneath a village the same name. Prior to mining activities, the village and its agricultural lands should be dislocated and deserted. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania. West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought but rather 200 in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan's entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

? The economic health and national security of the U.S. depends on the continued availability of, and access to, reliable and affordable energy and mineral resources. However, America is hindered by a costly, inefficient and often redundant regulatory structure that thwarts domestic investment, expansion and job creation. The annual cost of federal regulations in the U.S. increased to more than $1.75 trillion in 2008; averaging $8000 per employee.(The Impact of Regulatory Costs on Small Finns, SBA, 2010) ? The complexity, uncertainty and delays within the current permitting system places the U.S. at a competitive disadvantage with many other countries that have both abundant mineral resources and a more welcoming business and regulatory climate. As a result, American and international mining companies often move overseas or across borders to invest capital, create local employment, and produce the critical minerals America must then import at higher cost, while sacrificing employment and economic stimulus. ? According to Behre Dolbear, the U.S. is ranked lowest globally due to the lengthy permitting period required before mine development can commence. (Where not to Invest, 2010).

The Coffee Creek lode gold discoveries are located in the White Gold district (Dawson Range), west-central Yukon, 130 km south of Dawson City and 30 km south of the Golden Saddle gold deposit (Figure 1). Extensive structurally-controlled gold mineralization has been discovered during the 2010 and 2011 exploration drilling campaigns, highlighting this part of the Dawson Range as a significant emerging gold district. [ ] In this contribution we review the geological framework and describe the mineralization styles and metal signatures observed to date on the Coffee project. The main Coffee area is underlain by a 15 km by 4 km geochemical footprint, characterized by discrete linear gold-in-soil anomalies that correspond to various mineralized corridors. Of several mineralized areas tested in the past two drill seasons by diamond core and reverse-circulation (RC) drilling, we focus on the Supremo, Double Double, Latte and Kona zones; areas with the most information obtained from drilling thus far (Table 1; Figure 2).

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle's Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

INTRODUCTION The wet shotcreting system utilizing steelfiber microsilica shotcrete with remote controlled equipment (The Robocon System) was developed in Norway 7-8 years ago. Norway was the natural origin for this system due to several factors. Almost 30% of all underground hydro-power stations in the world are located here. These projects created a need for high productivity shotcreting rigs for the rock support work in the caverns and in the connecting tunnels. During the period of 1976-1980, more than 1000 miles of tunnels were completed in Norway. Secondly, the utilization of microsilica in concrete was also developed in Norway due to a concentration of the world's ferroalloy p ants there. Robocon has presently placed approximately 110,000 m (150,000 cu. yds.) of this superior shotcrete, and has consequently an extensive experience in the shotcreting method. During a relatively short period of time (1975-1980), Robocon had a change from hand-operated, dry-process shotcrete to remote-controlled, wet-process shotcreting, because of improved productivity, reduced rebound, safer and cleaner working conditions. The introduction of microsilica and water-reducing admixture made it possible to produce wet-process shotcrete of high strength.

The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. Due to the transport mechanics of the depositional environment, glacial soils display a very wide range of grain sizes and behavior. Several nonstandard drilling, sampling, and analytical techniques are therefore required to characterize the subsurface. The paper summarizes the geotechnical investigation for the design of a large project in glacial geology, which will include both large and small diameter pressure balance tunneling. The paper focuses on the challenges presented by the glacial environment and the techniques required to identify and characterize it for design and contract document preparation.

Recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from coal-related resources has recently received significant interest due to supply concerns and their key roles in critical industries and defense-related technologies. An integrated flowsheet consisting of sorting, crushing/grinding, physical separation, acid leaching, solvent extraction, and selective precipitation was designed to achieve continuous production of rare earth products from various coal-related resources such as coarse refuse and acid mine drainage. A pilot plant was constructed that enabled continuous testing of the circuitry on a range of different coal-based feedstocks. Despite achieving significant success in producing high-grade rare earth oxide products, low REE recovery values and high operational costs necessitated a re-evaluation of the process flowsheet. This article describes the circuitry improvements that were based on both laboratory and pilot plant test results. Roasting as a pre-leach treatment was found to significantly improve the leaching rate and overall REE recovery values. After roasting West Kentucky No. 13 and Fire Clay coal refuse materials at 600 °C, REE recovery increased by 60 and 40 absolute percentage points, respectively. Rare earth concentration in the pregnant leachate solution (PLS) was increased to around 700 ppm prior to solvent extraction using a staged precipitation method. REEs in the precipitate were re-dissolved, purified, and extracted from the PLS using solvent extraction and selective precipitation to values of around 80%. As a result of the improvements, chemical consumption in the acid leaching and solvent extraction processes was significantly reduced. A techno-economical assessment of the improved flowsheet indicated significant commercialization potential.

New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.
