Case histories of water problems in underground mine shafts and tunnels are outlined to illustrate varying degrees of sophistication in grouting techniques currently applied in such construction. The interception of water underground can be one of prior knowledge, i. e., the site investigation provides necessary data to plan a grouting program prior to construction start, or excavations may encounter "changed conditions" or unplanned water. The latter includes catastrophic inflows and emergency situations where the structural integrity of a building or concrete shaft lining are jeopardized. The presentation of this paper outlines some applications of grouting work in underground mine construction throughout the United States in a variety of geological provinces and for a variety of minerals.

Arch Coal Inc. has implemented and sustained Best Practices at its four western mines through utilizing foremen in ongoing time studies. A prime benefit is the unique opportunity provided to front line supervisors. To date, 48 supervisors have participated in this program. Each quarter a new team is assembled with members from each operation. During three month blocks the supervisors conduct studies at each mine and identify best practices to implement at their own mine. Ongoing Best Practice and Action Item lists are reviewed each study. Mine management edits, prioritizes and monitors the completion of the proposed action items.

Pneumatic stowing was first introduced in longwall mining in the middle twenties. Since that time it has advanced through many stages of development, particularly abroad, which have greatly improved its efficiency and contributed to its growing use. Pneumatic stowing originated in coal mining but has also been adopted in metal mining. This paper discusses the techniques of pneumatic conveying of. stowing material and equipment and applications of pneumatic stowing.

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

The lining of the tunnel and shafts for a new section of New York City's- water system required extensive components to produce, deliver and place a continuous tunnel linning. The project placed approximately 153,000 CM (200,000 cy) of concrete for 5,340 M (17,520) of drill and blast 7.3 M (24 ft.) ID tunnel, located at depths of 152 M (500 ft.) to 213 M (700 ft.) . This section of tunnel will be connected to the surface water distribution system via four shafts of varying diameters ranging from 5.8 M (19 ft.) ID to 1.5 M (5 ft.) ID . All work was done beneath the streets of Manhattan under the rigid constraints of the City of New York and the Bureau of Water Supply regulations.

The use of tritium in manufacturing and its subsequent loss to the local environment in Tucson, Arizona resulted in a great debate relative to the physiological effects of low level radiation. This paper reviews some of the facts of the release and attempts to quantify the degree of hazard encountered by the local community. Some of the difficulties in assessing the true degree of absorbed dose and the assumptions necessary for calculation purposes are presented.

During the 1980 decade, the rapid price increase for flake graphite has generated a high degree of interest for the discovery and the development of alternate occidental sources of supply in response to fluctuations in quality and availability from current producers. Alike many industrial minerals, graphite draws its complexity not only from its mineralogy and unique properties but also from the very large spectrum of industrial applications each calling for specific quality criterion. As new high technology uses are being developed, more rigid specifications will apply. Discovered during the latter part of 1988 by Mazarin inc., some 30 Km South of Fermont near the Quebec-Labrador border, the Lac Knife deposit was quickly identified as one of the world major long term alternate source of stable supply for this mineral. This paper also reviews the status of the project development as of late 1991, while updating previous papers published by Industrial Minerals1990 and Mining Magazine 1990.

In any treatment process that requires a coarse feed material to be reduced to a fine size by crushing and/or grinding it must be determined whether a wet or dry comminution system should be utilized. All factors must be evaluated in reaching the decision. Among these factors are: 1) Ecology and Plant Environment: Unfortunately in many instances the decision on wet or dry is based on prejudice resulting from an unnecessary fear of dust. The writers submit that this fear, although once justified, is no longer valid because technology and equipment is now available to collect dust to meet any standard. When dry grinding is used it is very often possible to discard a portion of the waste product in a dry state. This will decrease the size of the tailing pond required. As pollution control standards increase it becomes increasingly difficult to clean up water from tailing ponds. 2) Operating Costs: Steel wear is often five or more times greater in wet grinding than in dry grinding. This is mainly due to corrosion. The evaluation of the economics of dry grinding must of course include the air system and dust collection; similarly in a wet grinding plant related pumping and material handling costs should be included. Pumping costs are often overlooked. This assumes water is made to flow for nothing. Pumping can account for 20 percent of the power consumption in the grinding plant. Large scale comparative tests were conducted in a wet and dry commercial plant in 1970. The same ore was used for both tests. With all factors included in both plants the dry system showed lower horsepower per ton.

The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.

The phytoremediation method is proposed to recover valuable metals from polluted soils. In this sense, the objective of this research is to determine if it is possible to use native plants in the recovery of precious metals from abandoned mining liabilities. The tailings samples containing Au and Ag were acquired from the northern region of Peru. Two native plant species, Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida, were used. Results show that Au was recovery around 19% (1.52 mg/Kg) and 25.43% (1.78 mg/Kg) by using Stipa Ichu and Cortadeira Nitida, respectively. Besides, Ag had a better recovery in the Stipa Ichu reaching a value of 6.83% (0.628 mg/Kg); in contrast, Cortadeira Nitida had an efficiency of 3.6% (0.814 mg/Kg). Bioaccumulation, bioconcentration and translocation factors were calculated by determining the concentration of precious metals in the roots and aerial parts of each plant. Results show that Stipa Ichu had a greater capacity of hyperaccumulated Ag compared to Au; while Cortaderia Nitida tended to have a better performance for Au. In conclusion, both plants are recommended for phytoremediation of mining liabilities.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). PROJECT OVERVIEW As the sun-bronzed San Diego students strolled casually to class, mining crews from Atkinson Construction were working only 9 meters below the surface. The330 meter long, 11.3 meter diameter squat ellipse NATM tunnel is part of the9.3 kilometer Mission Valley East Extension Light Rail Transit (MVE-LRT) being constructed for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB). The SDSU segment of the MVE-LRT was awarded to the Clark Construction Group, the parent company of Atkinson Construction for $82.7 million. URS CORP was the prime designer and Hatch Mott MacDonald performed the NATM tunnel design. The construction managers were Washington Infrastructure Services with Underground Construction Managers, EPC Consultants, and ILF Consultants. A NATM tunnel design was chosen as the most cost-effective way to minimize disruption of the university activities. The tunnel passes close to several buildings and directly below access roads, tennis courts and a baseball field. The NATM method of conventional mining uses shotcrete for ground support often reinforced with steel orplastic fibers, welded wire mesh and lattice girders. The tunnel runs from a cut and cover box up a 4.2% grade in a 217 meter radius left-hand curve with several spirals and ends at the underground station 330 meters away. The depth of cover varies from 16 meters near the west portal to nine meters at the station. The design called for a two-pass system with a primary lining of 300 mm shotcrete with lattice girders at 1 m centers and two layers of welded wire mesh. The lattice girders are used primarily for profile control and are not considered a structural element. The top heading was designed to be excavated in one of three excavation sequences depending on ground conditions and depth of cover. Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. It is also a major exporter of minerals. Canadian open pits are highly mechanized and use state of the art equipment and support technology. During the past few years significant productivity improvements have been achieved by taking advantage of larger equipment; in pit crushing and conveying; truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. The most recent developments in Canadian Open-pit Mining are related to hydraulic transportation and the application of Global Positioning Systems. Mine planning is computerized; environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning; equipment modifications are pursued with vigor to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian North.

A mining machine has been designed and fabricated to mine coal from room and pillar operations combining high pressure waterjet cutting and mechanical fragmentation. Waterjets are used to slot the coal face with an advancing plow wedge then breaking out larger coal pieces. The machine has the following advantages: - simply built around a disassembled longwall chock and gathering arm loader apron; - few moving parts which are simply and inexpensively maintained; provides immediate roof support in the face working area; - coal produced is larger, with resulting lower preparation cost; - no dust is generated; - risk of spark generation is virtually eliminated.

Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. In 1967, about 272 million tons of coal, amounting to over 51 percent of total coal consumption, were burned to satisfy this nation's hugh demand for power. The size of the utility market is currently five times that of 1941 and continues to grow with the demand for more and more energy. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F.

The practice of blasthole mining is typically applied in competent ground conditions, primarily because of the open stope dimensions. At Magma Copper -Superior Mine, a field pilot project was completed examining a variation of blasthole mining in poor ground conditions. The results were very encouraging not only from a technical viewpoint, but also productivity viewpoints. This paper describes the pilot project and the resulting implications.

Froth flotation has been used industrially for many years to separate valuable minerals from their associated gangue constituents. Notwithstanding the significance of this process to the mineral industry, many of the engineering tools needed for the evaluation of the flotation process are still in a developmental stage. Traditionally, the evaluation of a flotation test on both the laboratory and industrial scale has been based largely on a rougher recovery value achieved at a sufficiently long time to give a "final" or "equilibrium" recovery value. The assumption of a time equivalency for a given recovery value between various flotation tests or between laboratory tests and industrial operation underlies this method of evaluation. Such an assumption implies that flotation is an "equilibrium engineering process" and that the time-rate recovery of material from the flotation cell is not affected by changes in the flotation system. It has been shown by Bushell (1) and by Klimpel (2) that the assumption of time equivalency between various flotation tests is unjustified. Consequently, better tools are needed for evaluating flotation test results, Because mathematical flotation models which incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can completely describe flotation time-recovery profiles, they can provide an excellent tool to evaluate flotation tests.

The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.
