This paper presents the results of an analysis and summary of relevant literature on the mechanism of cementation of metals in acidic aqueous media, with the aim of reconsidering the conventional assumptions. The simplicity of the process as a mere galvanic metal displacement is discussed, and the real effects of pH and hydrogen pressure in different cases assessed. Finally, an alternative mechanism scheme with respect to the role of hydrogen species, in agreement with reported data, is proposed.

Conventional wisdom in the mineral processing industry leads one to believe that pressure oxidation of refractory carbonaceous (preg-robbing) ores is not a practical approach to process development. Initial acid pressure oxidation testing on carbonaceous sulfide ores at the Twin Creeks Mine supported this conventional wisdom. After testing other refractory process options, including air and oxygen enriched roasting, Santa Fe Pacific Gold decided to take a second look at pressure oxidation, using conditions outside the normal range of conventional practice. A combination of very fine grinding and high operating temperature and pressure resulted in significant increases in gold extraction. This paper details the effect of operating parameters developed for Twin Creeks on gold recovery, sulfur oxidation, carbon oxidation/passivation and preg-robb through the laboratory and pilot plant investigations.

The economics of open pit mine design are dictated by three basic elements: cut-off grade, stripping ratio and slope angle. Although these elements are functions of a number of independent parameters, they are interrelated through their influence on the overall economics. The optimum slope angle is the most uncertain element to determine, because rock mass properties are difficult to obtain. However, for preliminary estimation, the slope angle can be determined from the relationship between the probability of failure and the safety factor. The economics of the slope selected will depend on a profit versus risk judgment. In this paper, the author will present an actual case of application of this postulate.

This paper presents the process methods of beneficiating various copper-cobalt and copper-zinc ores mined by Gecamines in Zaire. Geology and mineralization of both sedimentary and vein type deposits are described with special emphasis on the production of oxide, dolomitic and sulfide concentrates. Description of different types of concentrators and their treatment methods are discussed for the production of sulfide, oxide and dolomitic concentrates. Production of concentrates, their consumption and stocks are briefly reviewed. Modernization of the concentrators with substantial investments on grinding, classification, flotation methods and tailings treatments are also discussed to improve the metallurgical efficiency of the concentrators with a view to improve the production of concentrates both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

This study focuses on the environmental characterization and assessment of long-term neutral mine drainage (CND) potential from waste rock piles at the abandoned Erdouz mine in Morocco. The study involved metallographic analysis, static tests, and column tests. Results indicate that the waste rock is not an acid mine drainage generator but produces CND, mainly with sulfates exceeding Moroccan standards. The waste rock is relatively stable and could be reused after pretreatment.

The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

The adhesion (and de-adhesion) of Bacillus subtilis to dolomite was determined under a number of conditions of initial concentration of the organism, agitation, mineral particle size and temperature. Rate equations curves for both adhesion and de-adhesion were constructed, with the rates of de-adhesion being about half that of adhesion. From the temperature data the energy of adhesion was determined to be about 1.02 kcal/mol. Adhesion of dolomite to B. subtilis follows a Langmuir isotherm. Equilibrium constants, adhesion capacity and Gibbs free energy of adhesion of B. subtilis to dolomite (at pH 6.6) were determined. These values were compared to similar data for adhesion of B. subtilis to apatite and dolomite.

The effect of dissolved ions present in plant water on the flotation of phosphate ore from central Florida was investigated. Of the three most abundant ions, namely Ca++, Mg++ and SO4--, calcium ions were the most detrimental in the flotation of phosphate with sodium oleate collector. In one feed, a 10 ppm concentration of Ca++ ions reduced the BPL recovery from 86% to 46% whereas in the other a 40 ppm concentration lowered the recovery from 90% to 52%. The effect of Na2C03, NaHC03, Zeolite and EDTA to remove ca++ ions from water and hence improve apatite flotation was also studied.

Modern surface mining operations are always seeking for minimizing costs while increasing production rates, among the optimization of other specific tasks that have an impact on the economics of the mine. Specifically, the cost related to the production fleet operation (shovels and trucks), the maximization of the overall performance of the equipment, and the uncertainty to meet the goals at the end of the operational time horizon are always topics of discussion with no apparent simple answer. On the other hand, truck-shovel dispatch systems based on Linear/Non-Linear Programming Algorithms have been in operation since mid-1990’s with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine, but having in most cases some important shortcomings related to the way these systems deal with the decision making of the operational objectives, being necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. This paper discusses the implementation of a novel methodology based on AI techniques to assist in the decision making of the best goal selection when operating a Fleet Management System, taking into consideration time periods as variables and integrating them as part of the analysis, providing a better overview of the forecast plan completion with respect to previous production numbers and evaluating best alternative to handle future events to minimize losses or maximize profits, resulting in better truck assignments, minimum shovel idle times and overall productivity improvements of the operation at the end of the time horizon.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize biomass productivity, the influence of reclamation practices on biomass production must be well understood, which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass estimations and, also, the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, experimental biomass production plots on reclaimed mine sites established in Wise County, VA, are used for a comparative study of satellite spectral derivatives, which are evaluated against groundbased biomass estimates. Metrics based on four spectral derivatives, band ratios and spectral transforms were regressed against biomass measured in situ for different species. The results demonstrate that greenness and principal component 2 (PC2) were more efficient than the other spectral derivatives for monitoring the biomass of this reclaimed area. Also, it is shown that Landsat-5 TM has provided promising results for monitoring of the biomass changes occurring from 2008 to 2010 over the study area.

"SUMMARY Taru-Toge tunnel is being constructed using drilling-blasting technique as a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan. The maximum overburden is about 400 m. The authors have been carrying out a monitoring program to measure dynamic and multi-parameter responses of tunnel during and soon after the blasting operations using a multi-parameter monitoring system (Acoustic Emissions (AE), Electric Potential (EP), Temperature (T), Humidity (H) and Air Pressure (P)) and stand-alone type compact accelerometers developed by the first author. The measured response involves dynamic vibrations and other measurable parameters caused by blasting as well as by stress-redistribution around the tunnel face. This is one of the first attempts in the world to measure the response of rock mass caused by blasting at a very close vicinity of the tunnel face. In this paper, the authors present the outcomes of this unique monitoring study on the dynamic responses of the Taru-Toge tunnel during excavation and discuss their implications in actual applications. INTRODUCTION The real time monitoring of the stability of tunnels are of great importance when tunnels are prone to failure during excavation such as rockbursting or squeezing (i.e. Aydan et al. 1993, 2001). Experimental studies by the authors showed that rock indicates distinct variations of multi-parameters during deformation and fracturing processes (i.e. Mizutani et al. 1976; Aydan and Daido 2002; Aydan et al. 2003, 2011). These may be used for the real-time assessment of the stability of rock structures. An application of this approach was done to the Taru-toge tunnel a part of expressway project connecting Shin-Tomei Expressway and Chuo Expressway at the boundary of Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures in the Central Japan (Imazu et al. 2015). The parameters measured involve electric potential variations, acoustic emissions, rock temperature, temperature and humidity of the tunnel in addition to the measurements of convergence and loads on support members during the face advance."

Underground stone mine ventilation is characterized by large openings with low resistances. These mines primarily face three challenges: moving adequate volumes of air, controlling and directing the airflow, and planning ventilation systems that work well with production requirements. Given these challenges, this paper examines the data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine the extent to which respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and diesel particulate matter (DPM) are an issue in underground stone mines. Out of 522 sampled mines, there were 108 personal samples exceeding the RCS Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) during 2000–2020. DPM were more prevalent than RCS in these mines with 382 personal samples exceeding the DPM PEL out of the 929 mines sampled during 2002–2020. Dilution of DPM is usually the defining parameter for design of mine ventilation systems in largeopening underground stone mines. With this knowledge, focused attention can be directed to these mines so that appropriate prevention and mitigation techniques can be utilized to prevent stone miners’ exposure to RCS and DPM and subsequent respiratory diseases.

Recent studies towards dragline excavation efficiency have focused on incrementally achieving automation of the entire excavation cycle. Initial efforts resulted in the development of an automated dragline swing system, which optimizes the swing phase time. However, the system still requires human operation for collision avoidance. For full dragline autonomy, a machine vision system is needed for collision prevention and big rock handling during the ‘swinging’ and ‘digging’ phases of the excavation operation. Previous attempts in this area focused on collision avoidance vision models which estimated the location of the bucket in space in real-time. However, these previous models use image segmentation methods that are neither scalable nor multi-purpose. In this study, a scalable and multi-purpose vision model has been developed for draglines using Convolutional Neural Networks. This vision system averages 82.6% classification accuracy and 91% detection in collision avoidance. It also achieves an 87.32% detection rate in bucket pose estimation tasks. In addition, it averages 80.9% precision and 91.3% recall performance across terrain recognition and oversized rock detection tasks. With minimal modification, the proposed vision system can be adjusted for other automated excavators. INTRODUCTION Complete excavator automation is widely regarded as the next phase in efforts toward improving earthmoving efficiency. Earthmoving often involves complex, forceful interactions between an excavator and the ground. The nature of these interactions depends largely on the type, properties and physical characteristics of the earth material. This process is further complicated by the random occurrence of tree roots, boulders and other such obstructions. Therefore, the ability of a controller to detect changes in the operating conditions, adjust the digging strategy and respond in real-time is of utmost importance. Early studies into autonomous excavation identified some key performance criteria which included the following [1]: • The autonomous excavator must be able to work in any type of earth material. • Its excavation accuracy must be within 50mm. • It should be able to handle different surface and underground obstacles autonomously. • It should be able to operate at the speed of the average operator in any condition. • Its operation should be capable of safe integration with other site systems.

The SART process has been developed for Teck to treat bar­ren solution from the cyanidation/CIP process that has been developed for the Lobo-Marte project in Chile. The objective of the process is to recover cyanide in a form that is suitable for recycling to the leaching part of the process. The Marte and Lobo ore bodies require a dosage rate of about 2 kg/t NaCN, of which only 0.5 kg/t is truly consumed (as thiocyanate, cyanate and ferrocyanide species). The remaining -1.5 kg/t is present as cop­per cyanide (-1 kg/t) and free cyanide (-0.5 kg/t), and is poten­tially recoverable and recyclable. "INTRODUCTION “Sampling is the process of taking a small portion of an article such that the consistency of the portion shall be representative of the whole” (Baxter and Parks, 1939) “An orebody is a mixture of minerals in proportions that vary in different parts of the mass. As a consequence the proportion of contained metals also varies from place to place. Therefore, a single sample taken in any particular place would not contain the same proportion of metals as does the orebody as a whole except by a highly improbable coincidence. The probable error, which would be very large if only one sample were taken, decreases with the number of samples, but it never disappears completely unless the samples are so numerous and so large that their aggregate is equal to the orebody itself, in which case the orebody would be completely used up in the process of sampling. Since carrying sampling to such an extreme would defeat its own purpose, some probable error is always present in actual cases and the practical objective is to reduce this probable error to allowable limits. This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive.” (McKinstry, et al., 1948). In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not alone on the number of samples but also on proper distribution of them throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . "The chemical treatment of mine-influenced waters is a longstanding environmental challenge for many coal operators, particularly in Central Appalachia. Mining conditions in this region present several unique obstacles to meeting NPDES effluent limits. Outlets are often located in remote areas with challenging terrain where conditions do not facilitate the implementation of large-scale commercial treatment systems. Furthermore, maintenance of these systems is often laborious, expensive, and time consuming. Many large mining complexes discharge water from numerous outlets, while using environmental technicians to assess the water quality and treatment regime multiple times per day. As an alternative solution, this paper describes the ongoing research and development of automated chemical treatment systems for mine water discharges. The current work explains the development of a bench-scale prototype that has been used to evaluate various monitoring, notification, and control strategies. Results from this testing are compared to present day practices to show the costs and benefits of implementing an automated treatment and monitoring program. INTRODUCTION Background The National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), per Section 402 of the Clean Water Act, requires permitting of all point source discharges from coal mines. This program dictates that all water leaving a permitted boundary, whether it be process water or storm water, must leave through a monitored NPDES outlet. These permitted NPDES discharge points, also denoted outlets, outfalls or monitoring points, must meet a rigorous set of effluent limits to maintain compliance. Common effluent limits monitored by coal companies include but are not limited to iron, manganese, aluminum, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Raw mine water is often deficient in meeting these effluent limits, and as a result, various treatment processes are required to bring the water into compliance prior to environmental release. Depending on the mining and geologic conditions, water monitoring and treatment programs can constitute a significant operating cost for the mine operator. In Appalachia, acid mine drainage (AMD) constitutes one of the most significant and widespread water quality challenges that must be treated per NPDES guidelines. AMD is a general lowering of water pH that occurs when water and sulfide minerals interact within oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is a similar term that applies more generally to non-mining causes such as highway construction and other large-scale excavations. Today, mine influenced waters (MIW) is becoming more popular as the general term referring to all types of mining-induced water issues. AMD has been researched substantially over the last 30 years, with investigators studying various causal mechanisms and treatment strategies (e.g. Gazea, 1996; Ziemkiewicz, 1998; Skousen, 2000; Kleinmann, 2001; Johnson, 2003; Akcil, 2006; Kalin, 2006). This research has produced several pragmatic results, which provide numerous methods to predict, prevent, and treat AMD."

Faced with decreasing production from the gold heap leach operation, Robinson implemented a drilling and blasting program on the leach pads in 1993. This program offset some of the negative effects of low ore permeability and short circuiting of leach solution that resulted in lower than optimum recoveries. The drilling and blasting program created new solution flow paths and increased gold recovery. Production and pulp assays at depth intervals, prior to and following drilling and blasting, reveal the degree of short circuiting and benefits of the program.
