One of the prime examples of the versatility of the MARCONAFLO system, which is a body of technology comprising the means to handle, store, load, transport, discharge and reclaim mineral commodities in slurry form, is the direct application of this process to leaching ores. The initial approach was to provide a much improved materials handling system for the transport of copper ores; however, an extensive development program, inclusive of prototype and pilot plant tests, has established that a new leaching concept is possible with this system. Data are presented from the leaching operation of a 25 TPD pilot plant utilizing a copper-oxide ore, mainly chrysocolla. This pilot plant was designed to incorporate true countercurrent flow where the ore is actually in motion, as contrary to vat leaching operations, and the ore being successfully leached is fine crushed ore (3/8-inch x o), contrary to agitation leach circuits. Extractions in excess of 85% of the soluble values are common with only 15 hours of retention time in the MARCONAFLO leaching system.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

In many instances, the actual production from a longwall face does not equal the planned capacity. General problem areas which have been identified include face length and panel depth, face area and gate entry roof support, face conveyor and shearer wear, outby haulage system failures, number of entries in longwall gate development and longwall move time. The performance of a longwall face is totally dependent on the interaction of these and many other factors. To explore fully these interactions, a systems analysis of longwalls has been performed. In this paper, the systems approach, the factors considered in the analysis, and the results of the analysis are presented.

As the Federal government along with individual states continue to grapple with the job of refining a comprehensive energy policy, coal continually stands out as an energy source which heralds a combination of old and new capabilities like an energy planners prophecy, but which is plagued with serious environmental constraints. To determine what level of coal utilization is ultimately possible for states East of the Mississippi, whose high sulfur content coal presents the most paramount of challenges, one must consider product availability, via existing transportation modes, the developing industrial markets and the ability of coal to meet the challenge of becoming an environmentally acceptable fuel. Gasification is emerging as a form of utilization, which during the next twenty years stands a good chance of being able to meet the challenge of making coal an environmentally clean, easily transport-able and usable fuel. It can be argued that, of all the potential ways of utilizing high sulfur coal, coal gasification is perhaps the most expensive, the most financially risky and carries environmental liabilities of its own. Synthetic gas and oil markets will undeniably be a function of price and demand, which, for the purposes of this paper, I'm assuming will begin to merge in the late 1980's and into the 1990's. This is also presuming that public utility commissions will allow favorable price structure ruling so that gasified coal products can be rolled into their respective rate base, much the same as synthetic natural gas from petroleum by-products are currently being priced. The comparative economic markets of coal to gas pro-duct have plenty of time to mature. There is an approximate twelve-year lead time needed to bring coal gasification plants on line which will be able to compete in the market place for natural gas and oil customers.

The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

Introduction The need to develop accurate predictive hydraulic fracturing simulators arises from the consideration of vertical containment for the fracture. Fracture height growth from a pay zone into adjacent layers has been shown (see Cleary [I]) to depend on three sets of parameters for the different strata: - elastic properties, - closure stress variations, and, -fracturing fluid leak off, and poro-elastic stresses. Qualitative analysis of the effects of these parameters has been reported in the literature. The first effects were described by Van Eekelen, using simple elasticity considerations [2]. The effect of stress variations was described numerically by Simonson and a1. [3] and experimentally by Thiercelin [4]. Effects of back stresses induced by fluid invasion on fracture propagation were considered by Cleary [5]. In order to couple these effects, a numerical code al- lowing the simulation of three dimensional growth of a hydraulically induced fracture has been developed with the ability of representing the effects of heterogeneities on fracture lateral and vertical extension. The model is based on a new variational formulation of the boundary integral representation of three-dimensional elasticity. The fluid flow and elasticity equations are solved using a moving mesh representation which offers enough flexibility to enable the simulation of any closure stress distribution. Simpler models representing fracture height growth (P3DH models) have been developed [6] [7] that approximate the fracture by a series of one dimensional segments, and the limitation of such approaches is examined in this paper. 1 Description of the model 1.1 Fracture Geometry Hydraulic fracturing simulations involve the coupling of solutions to elastic deformations, fluid flow in the fracture, and fluid leak off into the formation. Since the use of direct solution techniques (i,e,,3D finite elements) is prohibitive, the method used in this study is baaed on a boundary integral representation of the 3D elasticity equations. 1.2 3D Models The classical representation of the problem of a fracture in an infinite medium by boundary integrals is [8]: [ ] where u is the unknown displacement field, r n is the traction operator, I? is the fracture surface, and K is the Kelvin tensor of fundamental solutions to the elasticity operator. The preparation of aggregates is a form of mineral processing which has been taken for granted for many years, mostly because of its lack of glamour when compared to the winning of metallic minerals from their ores. Many of the processes and equipment now used in the metallic mineral processing industries originated in the more prosaic preparation of aggregates. 'Their adaptation to metallurgical processes has led to developments both in their design, and in their use. Modern practice, has been so exacting in its demands that, in many cases, this improved technology is finding new applications in the very industry in which it originated the mineral aggregate industry, The low cost requirements, large tonnage capacities and complex specifications which govern the acceptability of its products have node modern aggregate processing a much different art than it was one or two generations ago. The basic conditions which govern the type and quality of mineral aggregates were presented in an addendum to a paper given at the San Francisco Meeting in 1959 by one of the authors.

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environ-mental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

Cortez Gold Mines, the United States' third largest primary producer of gold, commenced continuous operations on January 10, 1969. The decision to proceed to production was made in March of 1968 and construction of the mill and stripping operations for the pit began in April and July, respectively. Anomalous conditions on the slope of Mt. Tenabo along the Roberts Mountain thrust fault zone were discovered by the U.S.G.S. while conducting geochemical surveys in the old Cortez silver district. Following the discovery of gold an intensive program of drilling was organized. Drilling outlined an orebody with 3.5 million tons of ore averaging 0.28 ounces of gold per ton. It was on the basis of this reserve that a 1700 t. p.d. cyanide plant was designed. Needless to say, with such a limited ore reserve, economies in design and construction would have to be observed. Cortez Gold Mines is a joint venture with American Exploration & Mining Co., The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources, Inc. , as partners. One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention, primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite concentrates by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid bake-leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400º C) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate happens during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase when baking at 400º C. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400º C, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.5 mL/g and two hours baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in a similar fashion.

Germanium has found major uses in infrared optics, fiber optics and a revised vigor as a catalyst for PET plastic production. Other advanced applications are in various stages of development. The solid state electronics industry has been the driving force behind the accelerating demand for gallium since the late sixties. Past developments of substrates for light emitting diodes, lasers and magnetic bubble memories are paling in view of the current excitement over the use of semi-insulating gallium arsenide for high performance integrated circuits. This application requires gallium metal and gallium compounds of extraordinary purity.

The High Density Sludge Process was originally developed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation for use on acid mine drainage and diluted waste pickle liquor discharges requiring continuous chemical treatment systems. This work began in the early 1970s and was first put into practical use around 1973. To date there are approximately 15 operating systems which have been installed on mine drainage in the United States, and another 10 systems worldwide. Dense Sludge is an innovative and improved method for treating acidic metal bearing streams in a manner which minimizes the volumetric generation of sludge for disposal. The technology utilizes a sludge recycle process which forms particles that have a low affinity for water, unlike conventional metal hydroxide solids which contain tightly bound interstitial waters. Typical acid mine drainage streams contain high sulfate concentrations which combine with calcium ions in lime based treatment systems to form gypsum crystals. The physical form of this gypsum is radically altered when the Dense Sludge process is utilized compared to the form generated in conventional lime treatment systems. The characteristics of the metals particles are also changed in this process, as the metal hydroxides are converted to metal oxides. Slides No. 1 and No.2 show scanning electron micrographs of conventional and densified sludges illustrating these differences. The magnification used was 300X. The dense sludge particles settle faster, dewater more readily, are more easily pumped, and hold much less water than conventional precipitates. In some cases, because the metal content of the sludge is more concentrated, it can be economically recovered.

Estimating the spatial distribution of ore grade is one of the most critical steps to proceed with an investment decision on a deposit. Kriging is the most widely used method to estimate the ore grade, but alternative techniques are being developed. Machine learning algorithms can be used as alternative methods to classical kriging. In this paper, the iron (Fe) grade of a deposit is estimated with the XGBoost algorithm, and the results are compared with kriging estimation results. For the estimations, samples collected from drillholes were used. Due to the different natures of the estimation methods, different steps were taken to perform the estimations. The results show that XGBoost produced higher-range estimates, which is a desired result in ore grade estimation, and the minimum and maximum of the estimates were lower and higher than the kriging estimates, respectively. However, like kriging, the estimation results were smoother than composites, and the variance of the XGBoost estimates was lower than the variance of composites. This means that even though estimation with XGBoost mitigates the smoothing effect, the estimation results suffer from smoothing like kriging.

This paper describes a case history of geochemical prospecting. An area of known mineralization was available for an orientation survey which led to the selection of elements and criteria for a reconnaissance survey in the area offsetting the known mineralization. Certain anomalies were found which were then made subject of confirmation sampling and of rock geochemical investigations. Inasmuch as the geochemical prospecting technique specifically led to a detailed area which now serves as a target for drilling and other exploration efforts, the geochemical prospecting part of the program is considered successfully concluded and, therefore, reported on here. Whether the target area will turn out to host the deposit or not is, of course, of utmost importance to the Company, but is of less importance to this paper. We will describe the concepts, the planning, the execution, the analysis and the interpretation of this typical geochemical prospecting case. A number of people on the staff of International Oil & Gas, Inc. have participated in this prospect, as have students from Southeast Missouri State University and their professor, Gary M. Lowell. In addition, the Missouri Geological Survey has been most helpful with records and letters on the century-old prospecting and mining in the general area. Many valuable discussions have also been held with geologists from the industry who, from time to time, have visited the area, examined the property and reviewed the status of the project. The support and interest from all these parties has made it possible to pursue and expand this exploration concept from one of being just "more of the same kind" to the most chal-1enging and exciting with which this author has ever been involved, namely the prospect for tin porphyry deposits in the mid-continent United States.

"The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity on the size of metallic iron particles in coal-based reduction products of an oolitic iron ore. The particle size distribution behavior (i.e., cumulative passing percentage and mean size of metallic iron particles) during reduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the particle size distribution of metallic iron particles was strongly influenced by reduction temperature, reduction time and binary basicity. The cumulative passing percentage and mean size significantly increased with reduction temperature and time in the entire range of the experiments. All curves of cumulative passing percentage versus particle size under different conditions demonstrated a similar trend (continuous increase). The size distribution parameters and mean size slightly increased with increasing binary basicity and significantly decreased when the binary basicity exceeded 1.0. The size of metallic iron particles could be controlled by adjusting the reduction conditions during coal-based reduction.IntroductionThe increasing demand for iron ore coupled with diminishing high-grade iron ore reserves has resulted in the urgent need for innovative technologies in order to use refractory iron ores. Oolitic iron ore is a typical refractory iron ore with tremendous abundance globally. Based on published literature, oolitic iron ore reserves are approximately 140 million tons in Europe, 10 billion tons in China and 66 million tons in Pakistan (Kazmi and Abbas, 2001; Wu et al., 2011; Yu and Qi, 2011; Sun et al., 2013a). Therefore, the efficient exploration and use of oolitic iron ore resources can play a significant role in easing the mineral resource crisis in the iron and steel industry. However, oolitic iron ore cannot be effectively upgraded by traditional beneficiation methods due to its mineralogical characteristics (e.g., low grade of iron, poor liberation of iron minerals and high phosphorus content) (Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b).Researchers recently proposed coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation to recover iron from refractory iron ores (especially oolitic iron ore) and a certain degree of breakthrough was achieved in both theory and practice. In this technology, iron minerals in the ore are directly reduced by coal to metallic iron, which grows into particles of different sizes. After comminution and liberation, metallic iron is concentrated by magnetic separation (Srivastava and Kawatra, 2009; Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Sun et al., 2013b; Li et al., 2011c; Gao et al., 2013). Sun et al. and Gao et al. used this technology to examine the recovery of iron from oolitic and Bayan Obo iron ores, respectively (Sun et al., 2013a; Li et al., 2011b; Li et al., 2011c). Metallic iron powder with more than 90% iron content was obtained as the final product, which could be used directly in steel production."

Longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall coal mine ventilation system. Increased production rates due to higher-capacity mining equipment tend to also increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation. Increases in panel length, with some mines exceeding 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices at a study site, a face monitoring study with continuous monitoring of methane concentrations and automated recording of longwall shearer activity was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a U.S. longwall mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam and using a U-type, bleederless ventilation system. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the longwall face. These boreholes had some unusual design concepts, including a system of manifolds to modify borehole vacuum and flow and completion depths close to the horizon of the mined coalbed that enabled direct communication with the mine atmosphere. The mine operator also had the capacity to inject nitrogen into the longwall gob, which occurred during the monitoring study. The results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Average face air velocities were 3.03 m/s (596 fpm) at shield 57 and 2.20 m/s (433 fpm) at shield 165. The time required for the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) peak to occur at each monitoring location has been interpreted as being representative of the movement of the tracer slug. The rate of movement of the slug was much slower in reaching the first monitoring location at shield 57 compared with the other face locations. This lower rate of movement, compared with the main face ventilation, is thought to be the product of a flow path within and behind the shields that is moving in the general direction of the headgate to the tailgate. Barometric pressure variations were pronounced over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis.
