The Colorado portion of the Rio Grande rift is clearly defined physiographically from the south in the San Luis valley northward to the latitude of Leadville where sediments of the Dry Union Formation (Tweto, 1961) accumulated within the subsiding rift zone. To the north of Leadville is a system of faults active in the late Tertiary, including the Mosquito fault that offset a portion of the Climax mineralization (Wallace et al., 1968). Tweto (197B) describes remnants of Dry Union Formation against the Mosquito fault north of Dillon in the Blue River valley, so it is apparent that the rift and associated sediments extended well to the north of Leadville. Kelley (1952, 1954, 1956) and Chapin (1971) have noted in New Mexico that the Rio Grande rift is a series of en echelon basins, offset to the east, with constrictions connecting them (Fig. 1). In Colorado the structural basins are offset to the west. The net effect of all the rift zone basins in New Mexico and Colorado is an arcuate pattern (Fig. 1) abutting the Colorado Plateau and Sari Juan Volcanic Province on the west. The width of the rift system gradually decreases northward to about Leadville where rift definition is not apparent.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel crossing beneath Burrard Inlet is an important component of the Greater Vancouver Water District’s plans to increase seismic resilience and meet increasing water demands. The project included the 110-meterdeep (350 ft) South TBM Receival Shaft, one of the deepest shafts to date in the sedimentary rock unit underlying much of Metro Vancouver. The shaft encountered varied sedimentary rock types, including fractured rock, with accompanying high groundwater inflows. This paper discusses the design and construction challenges associated with this shaft and the necessary means to complete the shaft in time for TBM arrival.

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). The large ratio of surface area to mass compared to larger particles is believed to make nanoparticles a greater hazard. As we are all well aware, the demand for coal is increasing very rapidly. This makes the coal industry one of great opportunity for both the miner and the-supplier. Up until the middle 1960's, the price of coal had been one of the most stable of all commodities for the proceeding fifty years. In somewhat oversimplified terms this was because the inflationary tendencies had been offset by improved mine techniques and more efficient, more productive, and more reliable equipment; but, in the last seven years the price of coal has doubled. It is not the intent of this paper to discuss the many reasons for this price increase, but to show how the cost of hauling coal can be sharply decreased with a new truck concept. Not long ago a mining executive stated that all haulage trucks now available are basically the same. They look the same; they cost about the same; they have the same engine, power train, and tires; and, they have about the same operating cost. Truck size has increased which has reduced the number of drivers, but the purchase price and maintenance and repair costs have increased proportionally. Pits must be widened and loading shovels enlarged, out, all this has not reduced the cost of moving coal. Another executive said that he saw no advantage in buying new trucks because his people now know how to maintain and operate the ones they presently have. They have all the right spare parts along with a good maintenance program. Most replaceable parts of the trucks now in operation have been replaced and improved at least once and the trucks are now running better than when they were new. Besides, the trucks are no pretty well written off.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaire called the Saturn and conducted a laboratory study using a Fletcher High Dual-boom Mast Feed (HDDR) roof bolting machine. The Saturn luminaire was designed to (1) enhance floor illumination to enable better detection of trip hazards in the interior spaces of a roof bolter and (2) reduce glare that has typically been an issue of concern on roof bolters. This paper reports on the results of achieving the second objective. The existing roof bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared with three versions of the Saturn luminaire relative to light intensity (100%, 75%, and 50%). Discomfort and disability glare data were obtained from 30 participants that comprised three age groups. Discomfort glare perceptions were obtained using the De Boer rating scale, and disability glare was quantified by using Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity tests. Discomfort glare was reduced at least 3 levels with all Saturn versions. Also, a predictive model was used to estimate discomfort glare, and the results were similar. Disability glare was the least for the Saturn’s 50% intensity, and all Saturn versions had significantly less disability glare than with the baseline lighting. Veiling luminance was calculated and used as another indicator of disability glare. Veiling luminance was 28 to 42 times greater with the baseline lighting as compared with that of the Saturn lighting. Lastly, visibility levels were calculated. The Saturn versions were 4 to 6.5 times better in terms of visibility level.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. A proposal for a modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non-cyanide lixiviant is described. A non-cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide-bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores were chosen as a focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulfate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulfate breakdown. A reconnaissance research program involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical test work on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modeling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulfate and ferric EDTA and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples in bottle roll tests under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. Therefore, the term ?in-place leaching? has been adopted for the proposed gold extraction system.

Minerals, together with agricultural and forestry products, are the primary source of wealth produced in the United States. Although the production of minerals requires only a small fraction of the state's total land surface, as compared with either agriculture or forestry (Table 1), mining activities generally are much more disruptive to the land surface, and rehabilitation is more complex and costly. The past 10 to 15 years have witnessed a sharp increase in mineral exploration and mining, particularly coal mining, which has brought with it an increase in conflict over land use and an increase in negotiations for purposes of mineral prospecting and mining. The general increase in the production and consumption of coal and the particular increase in the percentage of coal extracted by surface mining methods coupled with a growing nationwide environmental consciousness have created increased public concern and in some cases outrage over mining activities. Although there is ample evidence to indicate that it is possible to plan for and design mining activities in such a way that they are compatible with other activities and can thus be made a part of a sequential land-use plan, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding the importance of mining as the provider of basic and essential raw materials to supply society's constantly expanding and increasing mineral needs. This lack of knowledge extends to such matters as land and mineral rights negotiations, the character of mineral deposits and minerals, mineral economics, and land-use planning.

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain, or Germany are only forerunners of this development—their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic, and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as how can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry’s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia, and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later.

This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author's visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

Crystallization of ammonium paratungstate (APT) is frequently the last effective purification step in producing high-purity tungsten. However, crystallizer mother liquors are often several times higher in tungsten than predicted by the solubility of APT. The formation of heteropoly anions, particularly those containing phosphorus and silicon, is largely responsible. Solubility of tungsten in APT mother liquor can be linearly correlated with the concentration of these and other impurities. The problem can be overcome by direct treatment of the crystallizer feed solution with alum. By appropriate treatment, the aluminum hydroxide flocculates and is easily filtered, resulting in a purified low-aluminum crystallizer feed from which high APT yields can be attained.

Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

The Lac Shortt gold deposit is located in Northwestern Quebec, at some 115 km west of the Opemiska Division and 380 km northeast of the Lac Dufault Division, as shown on Figure 1. Falconbridge's exploration crews drilled the first six holes in the gold-bearing ore zone in 1979. After further diamond drilling from surface in 1980, the decision was taken to carry out an underground exploration program. A three-compartment shaft was sunk to a depth of 340 metres in 1981 and 1982; it was followed by an extensive exploration program, which included 1073 metres of cross-cutting and footwall drifting, 645 metres of ore drifting and 11 200 metres of diamond drilling. The underground work was completed by mid-winter 1983. It was followed by a complete feasibility study of the Lac Shortt Project. After some $Can 14.2 millions in exploration expenditures, the Board of Directors of Corp. Falconbridge Copper approved in July 1983 additional expenditures of $Can 45 millions to bring the Lac Shortt Mine in production at the capacity of 261 000 tonnes per year. Gold price was $US 425 per ounce at the time.

The Deserado Mine and transportation system is the fuel supply portion of the Bonanza Power Plant project. Deserado Mine con¬sists of an underground mine with a capacity of 1,224,700 tonnes (1,350,000 tons) of clean coal per year, a 649 tonne (715 tons) per hour closed water circuit jig type preparation plant, a 5.6-kilometer (3 ½ -mile) overland conveyor with covered slot storage, a unit train rail load-out and 59.5 kilometers (37 miles) of totally independ¬ent, captive electrified railroad. Planning and exploration started in March of 1978. Construction of all facilities was completed in April of 1984, approximately six years after initial planning was commenced. This paper will discuss exploration, environmental permitting, mine planning, engineering and construction of the Deserado Mine project.

In an underground coal mining environment, a frictional ignition may be defined as the ignition of an explosive air/ methane/coal dust mixture by mining machinery. As the use of power loading equipment has become more widespread, frictional ignition incidents have increased. There have been many fatalities and injuries from this cause including the death of eleven miners in Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1979. This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary study carried out under the auspices of the Coal Research Laboratories, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The objective of this study has been to identify a Longwall face cutting system that is inherently safer than the conventional shearer loaders used in Nova Scotia.

Zinc ferrite is considered an integral phase of zinc residues as their presence can render the processing of zinc and critical metals difficult. It is a refractory phase, formed at high temperature in the presence of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) during oxidative roasting in zinc processing plants. Because it is refractory to efficient leaching, unreacted zinc ferrite gets concentrated in the final zinc residue, making it a viable source of zinc and indium extraction. The refractory nature of zinc ferrite makes the extraction of associated critical metals difficult. In order to explore a potential economic and carbon-neutral zinc ferrite processing technique, our previous study proposed the partial reduction of zinc ferrite followed by sulfuric acid leaching of the roasting product [1-3]. As demonstrated in our previous studies, partial reduction of zinc ferrite results in a mixture of ZnO, Fe3O4 and FeO, which can be further subjected to leaching for efficient extraction of zinc and critical metals such as gallium and indium.
