Abstract. The value of industrial rocks and minerals produced in New Mexico in 1978 exceeded 227 million. 1e state ranked first in the nation in production of potash and perlite and was a leader in pumice production. Other commodities with sizable production in New Mexico include barite, caliche, clay, dimension stone, fluorspar, gypsum, humate, limestone, mica, salt, sand and gravel, scoria, and silica sand Non metallic resources are distributed throw out the state, but development and exploitation is concentrated in western and southeastern New Mexico. The value of industrial rocks and minerals within the state grew about 9 percent to more than $227 million in 1978. Continued growth, however, depends on continued demand, exploration, and development.

Remotely located in the jungle near mount Puncak Jaya [16,500 ft (5,030 my), Irian Jaya, Indonesia rests Freeport's Indonesian copper mining operation. Shortly after start up of Freeport's copper concentrator in 1972, lower than estimated throughput was experienced within the crushing circuit. Within one year, Freeport had successfully engineered a solution, and was operating a 5,500 dmtpd wet screening circuit. Today, after 19 years of successful wet screening expansion and operation, the concentrator processes 57,000 dmtpd.

Accurate prediction of recoverable reserves are key to the development and planning of a mining operation. Recovery functions for tonnage, quantity of metal and ore grade are defined and two approaches for their estimation are proposed. The indicator kriging (IK) approach draws on the data rank orders, whereas the multi-gaussian (MG) approach relies on a grade multi-variate distribution hypothesis. Although based on different premises, both approaches yield remarkably similar--and accurate--estimates for recoverable reserves.

This paper describes the derivation of a set of simultaneous algebraic equations that can be solved to produce a rigorous theoretical mass balance around solution mining wells. This mass balance can then be compared with a mass balance calculated from field measurements to provide the percentage of mass balance closure. Significant deviations from the closure can be an indication that the wells are either gaining or losing circulation fluids. The equations also provide calculations for the amount of water and dissolved mineral that accumulates in the well during the mining process, as well as the net mining rate. Equations for both single mineral mining and multiple mineral mining are discussed. They can easily be formatted into spread sheets for rapid calculation of field measurement data.

These experiences can be success- fully implemented in other nations committed to transforming their state natural resource sector.

When it comes to the analysis of gold bearing ore, there are literally dozens of variables that contribute to the final "true value" of a given sample. Initial sample selection, splitting size and method, inherent nugget gold, pulverization method, and analytical method variations are but a few. However, it seems that the inherent nugget gold particle is targeted as the primary reason for intra and inter-laboratory variations in assay. The following study will show that this is not always the case. A series of tests were undertaken for the Aurora Partnership-Aurora Project to solve inter-laboratory variations in the analyses of blasthole cuttings. Initial concern was centered on the probability that free gold occurrence was resulting in erratic results for the mine's cyanide shake assays and outside laboratory fire assays. Comparison of fire assay and cyanide shake assay was sporadically consistent with previously demonstrated extraction percentage for the cyanide method. The goal was to delineate the factors that ensure consistency in analyses; implement, where needed, Good Laboratory Practices; and reestablish acceptable analytical method correlation.

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.

The term kaolin is derived from "kauling". a Chinese word meaning high ridge, which was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago.(1) Other common names used today for kaolin include "clay" and "China Clay". The former word technically has a broader meaning and could refer to various types of clays such as bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin as described above but could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms "kaolin" and "clay" will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's widespread industrial usages center on the mineral's (kaolinite) physical features of good color, low viscosity and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with approximate composition Of 2H20.A1203.2Si02. As will be shown later, a new version of the product, calcined clay with modified hydration content, is gaining widespread usages. Components of any particular kaolin in addition to alumina and silica are viewed as impurities. The more valued deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of highest purity.

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safety studies revealed that investigators use a wide range of statistical techniques for the analysis of mine injury data. Researchers have addressed the various issues of accident causation and prevention through analysis of mine injury data collected from mines. These studies are generally based on historical accident/injury data without considering the injured person/population at risk. In this paper, a public health approach, based on scientific methods of epidemiology, is presented to address mine safety issues. Epidemiology is the scientific study of disease and injury patterns among populations in time and space. Originally, epidemiology was concerned with epidemics of communicable diseases. Then it was extended to non-communicable diseases. Safety researchers found that epidemiologic methods are the best tools for injury research, because the occurrences of injury and the occurrences of disease are quite similar. As a result, some researchers started applying this concept to injury research. This paper presents some of the techniques used in epidemiologic studies and illustrates the application of a case-control study design to evaluate the role of some risk factors associated with injuries in underground coal mines. In this study, the injured persons were identified and, simultaneously, interviews were conducted to find the significant risk factors responsible for occupational injuries in coal mines.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

The Jiboia heavy mineral sands deposit is a new discovery associated with the São Francisco River delta on the northern coast of Sergipe state. The identified resources are part of the much larger mineralized trend. Mineralization is hosted in paleodunes deposited on Holocene marine terraces (Fig. 1). The dunes are up to 30 m above sea level, and mineralization occur from 6 m above sea level upward. The main ore minerals constitute pseudorutile, ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite. This work presents a thorough characterization of the mineralogy and granulometric distribution of the Jiboia orebody.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. This paper discusses the challenges to complete the construction of two large underground Metro stations and connecting tunnels in the Tren Urbano system. The completion work includes the installation of specialized mechanical and electrical systems, extensive architectural finishing as well as coordination with systemwide power and controls installed by others. A unique feature of this project was the simultaneous design and construction of the structural/civil/architectural/mechanical/electrical works by KKZ separately from the power and control systems under the management of the Owner, its consultants and other contractors. Completion of this project comes after almost six years of continuous design and construction in a dense urban environment. The project was confronted by many challenges that could only be met with the combined efforts of the Joint Venture team in close cooperation with the Owner and its System wide Contractor. This paper will also address many of the major design and construction changes implemented to suit the Owner’s requirements.

The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. An attempt has been made to compile and code geologic data relating to twenty of the major porphyry copper districts of North America in such a manner as to permit the use of modern electronic digital computers to retrieve, compare, and build statistical mathematical models from the input. In the exploration process as part of his broader efforts to evaluate the potential of some prospective region, district, or ore body, the experienced geologist consciously or subconsciously compares and fits the observed geologic features to similar phenomena associated with known ore bodies with which he is acquainted. Thus an adequate conceptual "model" of the total geologic environment and type of ore body sought is an essential requirement for the successful exploration effort. Numerous such models of porphyry coppers already exist in the minds and notes of many experienced geologists today. These models are, of necessity, couched largely in qualitative terms and though they may be quite definite in the mind of the porphyry copper expert, the total concept of what constitutes a porphyry copper deposit and environment is difficult to convey in very precise terms. There probably is no such thing as a typical porphyry copper deposit. However, it is well understood that most of the deposits that have been studied have many geological characteristics in common. A logical question then might be: What characteristics are most common or how often do they occur in common, and what is their relationship to other common characteristics ?

The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of low temperature radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infrared analysis (lR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive Infrared (IR), Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for quartz analysis in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures such as the analysis sample preparation from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist, and data interpretation affect differently the results from each of the methods. Significant differences in analysis results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All these studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods. In a recent research, a procedure for preparing bulk coal and host rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle size distribution, matrix, and calibration on analysis results. In this paper, several issues with the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host rock, and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified.

This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

"There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."

Topaz is a fluorine-bearing aluminosilicate mineral of the kyanite-sillimanite group. The formula has been given as Al2SiO4(F,OH)2, [Al(F, OH)]2SiO4, or 2Al2O3?2Al(F, OH)3SiO2. Topaz is generally considered a semiprecious-to-precious gem mineral, but it is a fairly common minor constituent of granites. In 1937 the U.s. Geological Survey reported an occurrence of massive topaz in the 3 Brewer gold mine, Chesterfield County, S.C. Over the next 8 years considerable research was done on topaz to establish its properties and to determine possible end uses The first reported shipment of ore was in 1939 Peak production was reached in 194412, and output then began declining until the mine closed in 194913? During World War II topaz was used in refractories, as a flux in steel mills, and in the manufacture of borosilicate glass 14. The main advantage of using topaz over kyanite and sillimanite in refractory use was that calcined topaz converted to over 95 percent mullite (3A1203 .2Si02) while calcined kyanite or sillimanite contained only 88 percent mullite15. However, a major draw-back to utilization of topaz is the evolution of fluorides during calcination. In 1973 the Geological Survey reported that topaz occurred in probable commercial quantities in at least two domestic locationsl6: the Brewer area of South Carolina and a location in Colorado. The literature also indicated that progress had been made in controlling fluorine-bearing fumes. This research has progressed to the state where valuable fluorine compounds are being recovered on a commercial scale 17. Thus, a major obstacle to utilization of topaz appears to have been resolved. The Bureau of Mines under its program of advancing minerals technology initiated a project to study techniques for the concentration of topaz from disseminated materials. The objective of the study was to determine those techniques that would be used to produce topaz concentrates that could be utilized as a source of fluorine and mullite.

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.
