The 2004 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference contained an air of optimism and excitement that has not been seen since 1997. Many segments of the mining industry are alive and well. This is largely a reflection of improved metal prices, themselves due to the strong euro and improvements in Asian economies. Those factors offset higher oil prices, a weaker U.S. dollar and concerns about the Middle East. This report is an overview of the conference. It is supplemented by an examination of conference handouts, abstracts and a few complete papers that are on the PDAC’s Web site www.pdac.ca. Sixty PDAC 2004 abstracts are available at the same site, along with 15 complete papers in PDF format. The conference was held March 7-10 in Toronto, Ontario. It was attended by a record 9,200 delegates from 85 countries. About 8,000 people from 74 countries attended the 2003 conference.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow inby the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

The United States continued to depend on imported bauxite during 1995. Domestic bauxite mine production remained at about the same level as in 1994. It amounted to less than 1% of total world production. All of it was used for nonmetallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants and refractories. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 12 countries. Principal suppliers for this 10 Mt (11.1 million st) of ore were Guinea (39%), Jamaica (35%), Brazil (17%) and Guyana (8%). The average value of imports, c.i.f. US ports, was $31/t ($28/st). Calcined refractory-grade bauxite imports totaled235 kt (259,000 st). It had an average value of $112/t($102/st) c.i.f. US ports. China supplied 61%, Guyana30%, Hong Kong 4% and France 3%. Imports of other grades of calcined bauxite, primarily for the abrasives market, totaled 259 kt (286,000 st).They were supplied by China (59%), Greece (20%), Brazil (14%) and Australia (6%). The average value was$74/t ($67/st) c.i.f. US ports.

This coal basin is a fore-deep basin with a lot of similarities with the Appalachian basin in the U.S.A., where throughout the 1990s, the research in coalbed methane grew rapidly due to a combination of factors, including the high prices for gas and electricity. In the Asturian Central Coal Basin 129 coal beds with thickness ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 m have been recognised in the productive carboniferous in an area bigger than 1500 km2. The maturation grade of these coals varies from the external zones of the basin where the volatile content ranges from 35%-40% to 20%-30%, to the internal zones of the basin where the volatile content ranges from 20% to 10%. In this context a sustainable exploration for fossil fuel is currently being undertaken in the most favourable areas of the basin in order to evaluate the real possibilities for coalbed methane (CBM) resources.

GE Industrial Systems has received a multimillion dollar contract from Bucyrus International to supply complete electrical systems for three new draglines. These machines will be installed at Coal India’s Northern Coalfields’ Dudhichua and Nigahi open cast mines. The Dudhichua and Nigahi mines are located south of Varanasi. They produce Type C and Type E coal for use in the region’s super-thermal power stations. The GE systems will power and control the drag, hoist and swing motions of one Bucyrus W2000 walking dragline at Dudhichua and two a Nigahi.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a new 2500 STPD gold operation. The control system of the mine and milling operations are a hybrid of DCS (Distributed Control System) control and PLC (Programming Logic Controller) control. A DeltaV DCS system serves as the main control and operation platform while the PLCs operate a multitude of vendor specific packages. The communication backbone of the DCS system is a hybrid of star and ring fiber optic topology, which provides reliability and flexibility. The communication between the DCS and PLCs is typically facilitated by serial communication. This communication insures the integrity of the whole control system.

In processing coal, the low concentrate value requires high capacity production and sharp classification/separation techniques to reduce specific production costs. The allflux separator meets these criteria with a unique two-stage design. Through a combination of rising current and fluidized bed technologies, the allflux has extended the state of the art by expanding the particle size range that can be efficiently processed. Using concepts that have proven successful in processing concrete sands, small-scale industrial testing with coal feed stocks looks very promising. Attractive applications for the allflux are projected in fine coal recovery from old settling ponds or as a retrofit in existing fines circuits.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991; 1994). In this study, Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline) have been selected to investigate their abilities to undergo geopolymerization. The interaction between alkali metals present in the alkali-feldspars and alkali metal cations contained in alkaline solution during geopolymerization has also been studied. It has been found that both albite and microcline can be applied in geopolymerization to produce geopolymers with a high compressive strength. Although the dissolution of M-feldspar (where M = Na and/or K) in concentrated MOH solution is inhibited when the alkali metal cations of the alkaline solution differ from the alkali metals structured in M-feldspar, the resulting geopolymers are found to demonstrate a higher compressive strength. Moreover, a proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and a higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly increase the ultimate compressive strength of the geopolymers.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

Talc is a layered, hydrous magnesium silicate mineral. It has a soft, soapy feel and typically a smooth texture. Talc is also known for its insulation, heat resistance, chemical stability, oil absorption and strong covering quality. Talc, Mg3Si4O10 (OH)2, has a theoretical chemical composition of MgO at 31.7 percent, SiO2 at 63.5 percent, and H2O at 4.8 percent. However, talc’s chemical and mineralogical composition can vary depending on its geological history/parent rock association. These mineral associations and variable levels are usually chlorite and carbonates (magnesite, calcite and dolomite). Two key elemental substitutions that can occur in the talc crystal structure are iron for magnesium and fluorine for hydroxyl. These compositional differences may limit or enhance the talc’s usage in specific market niches. The United States remains self-sufficient in most grades of talc.

The usage of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is increasing rapidly throughout the Mining Industry, especially in the Industrial Minerals sector. GIS provides an efficient and robust link between spatial (often CADD) and tabular (database/spreadsheet) components. Mineral economists and corporate planners employ GIS to perform market analyses, to source raw materials, and to schedule and monitor deliveries to customers. Exploration and acquisition groups apply spatial analysis to identify high quality resources that meet economic guidelines. Mining regulators and environmental affairs departments expedite and monitor permitting, environmental compliance, and best management practices reclamation through GIS data management and Electronic Permitting. Operations staffs monitor overburden removal, material extraction, quality control, and stockpile volumes with GIS. This paper summarizes the many aspects of GIS in Industrial Minerals. It also introduces and addresses issues and concerns commonly encountered during a mining GIS implementation.

The hydrocyclone problem has been a challenging task for the last 30 years. In the 80’s and 90’s Computational Fluid Dynamics solution to this problem began to appear. These were unsuccessful due to over simplification. In the past 3 dimensional solution with ?-e model and Reynolds Stress Model have been published. In this paper RSM and ?-e models are compared with velocity profiles measured in 75 mm and 250 mm diameter hydrocyclones. It is shown that results are not satisfactory with RSM or ?-e and that a model called Large Eddy Simulation is needed to describe velocity profile evolution and size classification.

Integrating a research and development department into an engineering company's corporate structure can be rewarding to the engineering division, the R&D group, and, most of all, the company's clients. Actually, the R&D department is a logical extension of the conventional processing group within an engineering organization-but the R&D group provides services as needed to the engineering department while it is carrying out regular testing, pilot plant, and preliminary feasibility studies. Backup Services Provided With an R&D group, the engineering division does not need a process engineering group as such. The R&D group provides project backup services for feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed engineering, construction, and startup. The R&D group, in turn, benefits from its close association with project engineers, draftsmen, estimators, and computer capabilities in the engineering division. The client also benefits from the arrangement because R&D and engineering skills are available to both departments on an as-needed basis without standby eost. To handle the integrated responsibility of R&D projects, as well as conceptual design and preliminary feasibility studies, the R&D staff must be carefully selected. These research engineers should: • have a good background in plant practice as a mill superintendent or chief metallurgist; • be capable of organizing and supervising a testing program or a pilot plant campaign; •be innovative and willing to accept new ideas and concepts; • be able to translate lab test results into a workable flowsheet through sound conceptual design and feasibility studies; and •be able to communicate with clients. In short, the R&D engineer must be a jack of all process-engineering trades to successfully take a project from concept to operating reality. Due to the rapidly increasing production rates and deepening of mine working areas, there is a drastic rise in the number of thermal issues to be addressed for maintaining a safe mine environment. As high temperatures and humidity in underground mines could affect the health and performance of workers, and ultimately the production rate, it is necessary to provide a properly controlled safe environment. The backfilling of stopes in metal, non-metal mines results in different thermo-physical properties for the hanging, side and foot walls, modeling of which is not provided by any existing mine climate simulation software. This paper presents the modeling of such a single stope using the MULTIFLUX (MF) software, developed at the University of Nevada, Reno. A special case is presented in this paper, where a case study from the Homestake mine in the US with a drift and ramp connected to a stope with high Virgin Rock Temperature (VRT) and various spot heat sources is modeled in MULTIFLUX and CLIMSIM, and the results are compared against each other. Another case is presented in which the stope of the previous case is modeled with walls, each having a different set of thermo-physical properties. These results are compared with the former results to analyze the effect of anisotropic properties.

"The Vietnamese economic growth of more than 5% per year leads this country to an enormous demand for raw materials. In the duration of ongoing expansion, the big challenge in the coming decades will be to make this process as sustainable as possible when it comes to economic, environmental and social objectives. Risk management especially in occupational safety and health (OSH) in enterprises is one of the most important tools to achieve this aim. But until now, this has not been taken into priority by Vietnamese coal mining enterprises. Main reasons for this situation can be found in deficient legislative conditions and in non-synchronized risk management systems. In contrast, Germany has implemented an adequate legal system and the German mining industry has gained lots of experiences in risk management, especially in occupational safety and health. This paper seeks to point out specific challenges how to improve occupational safety and health in Vietnam by transferring and applying German methods and standards."

Ion flotation shows great promise for recovering and removing metal ions from dilute process streams, either for environmental compliance or to recover values. This technique uses an ionic collector to concentrate non-surface active colligend ions of the opposite charge from a bulk solution at the solution?vapor interface. With a sufficiently large solution?vapor interfacial area (provided, for example, by sparging gas through the solution), the colligend can be concentrated and removed along with the collector in a foam phase. A key limitation on using the technique in the minerals industry, where many process streams contain a variety of ions and have relatively high ionic strengths, is the need to control which ions are interacting with the collector. Here the effect of three different chelating agents, namely dodecyldiethylenetriamine (Ddien), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and triethylenetetraamine (Trien), on the selectivity of copper, nickel and cobalt, or copper and alkaline earth metal ions, is reported. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for adoption in the minerals industry.

The U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is developing a hydrologic monitoring system for in situ leaching operations. A working prototype of this system was installed and tested at the Cyprus Casa Grande copper mine. Requirements specific to in situ leaching operations were identified by researchers. The system has been a useful tool for researchers and for mine personnel. Observations of the hydrologic monitoring system, including details of the development process, the design of the system, and the software developed at the Bureau have resulted in new ideas for an enhanced design of the system.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. The only significant iron ore deposit in Hungary could be found in Rudabánya. The mine was closed in 1986. The area of Rudabánya was always the home of heavy mining activity. In former times, mainly silver and other non -ferrous metals were excavated.
