This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

Mintek has developed a level-control system, FloatStar, for use in flotation circuits. Instead of controlling levels separately in each unit, the controller monitors levels throughout the circuit. It can thus take account of the global effects of any control actions. A collaborative project between Mintek and Karee Platinum Mine has begun, looking at aspects of flotation control. Karee plant was chosen as the site for this work because of its good existing control infrastructure. As a first stage of the joint project FloatStar was installed. Analysis during installation and running of the FloatStar has illustrated how circuit design and measurement technology can affect process control. Severe interactions have been observed in the levels of adjacent banks. The effect of FloatStar on flotation performance was tested and an improvement in level control was observed. Similarly, a faster settling of the plant after start-ups was observed. Both the improved level control and faster start-ups lead to higher platinum recovery.

Mechanical rock breakers are used in block caving operations to reduce the size of ore fragments which are too large to pass through grizzlys at the load-haul-dumper tipping points. Several layouts of grizzly, rock breaker and ore pass are possible. The authors evaluated three different layouts at the Premier Mine Division of De Beers Consolidated Mines. The first layout consisted of a 15m surge bin before the breaker, which was located 15 m below the production level. The second layout had a 43 m longs urge bin, with the breaker located 43 m below the production level. The third layout did not have a surge bin, the breaker was located on the production level and operated at the tip. The ore throughput, availability and utilisation, delays, costs and operational experience with each system are discussed. It was found that the rock breakers did not represent a bottleneck in the ore transfer system and a surge bin did not significantly improve the production capacity. The mine has decided to make use of rock breakers situated on the production level, breaking rocks at the tip.

In the synopsis, the author concludes that ?high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates?. Implicit to an appreciation of this statement is the necessity of a common understanding of what is understood by the terms: ?high level of seismicity? and ?high rockburst rates?. With respect to the former term there is no difficulty in that the level of seismicity is traditionally measured in terms of the Richter Scale. The latter term however presents a problem in that the author defines it as a particular sort of seismic event?viz: ?Rockburst? is understood as a seismic event that causes damage to an underground excavation with subsequent injury, loss of material/equipment or production shifts? (p. 322). No scale is given of the amount of: ?excavation damage ?level of injury ?material/equipment loss ?production shifts lost whether separate or cumulative, for a particular seismic event to be classified as a rockburst. A further difficulty arises in that in common usage the words ?rockburst?, ?seismic event? and ?earthquake? are all used to describe the same event.

Bateman, like other engineering contractors, carries out or participates in many studies of potential projects in the Minerals Industry. This paper aims to explain the contracting approach to feasibility studies as practiced by Bateman, particularly where this differs from a traditional mining company approach. A brief description is provided of the usual phases of a project and the types of estimate needed to proceed from one phase to the next. Possible organizational structures involving different forms of association between owner, contractor and consultants are then outlined. The bulk of the paper then demonstrates that the cost estimates prepared stem directly from the mining plan, metallurgical process design and engineering design philosophy. The steps to be followed in order to prepare a credible estimate which accurately reflects the design constraints are described. The importance and the methodology of carrying out value engineering and of preparing contingency estimates based on a thorough risk analysis exercise are then discussed. Financial modelling techniques are described briefly. The paper concludes with short summary case studies of two recent investigations of potential projects in Africa.

The bulk of plain carbon steel is produced through conventional Basic Oxygen or Electric Arc Furnace routes where the development of the AC Ladle Furnace has made it possible to also produce alloy steels. Smaller Ladle Furnaces have limitations such as lower efficiency; high electrode consumption and diminutive yields rendering them uneconomical to operate and making the processing of low carbon steel grades difficult due to carbon pick up. The demand for special steels and alloys with strict specifications is increasing while commodity prices remain competitive. The production of special steels and alloys have specific process control requirements and the development of the induction melting furnace (IMF) has made it possible to produce smaller batches economically. Refining and alloying of the melt in the IMF further enhance the efficiency. The INDUREF furnace offers increased productivity and flexibility through increased thermal efficiency and can be utilised for holding molten metal for further processing such as granulating, atomising, nitriding, alloy additions and desulphurisation of Ferro-alloys and steels. The system utilises a specially engineered ladle which is placed in an induction-heating assembly comprised of a stationary water-cooled copper coil and lamination packs. The addition of equipment for vacuum degassing and decarburisation of steels and alloys is also feasible. Benefits are: ? No electrode consumption or carbon pick-up ? The Skorpion Zinc Project demonstrated the viability of the production of zinc from non-sulphide (commonly called ?zinc-oxide?) ores, using the leach/solvent extraction/electrowinning process route. The success of Skorpion raised the profile of a number of other zinc oxide deposits, considered to be similar. However, a study of three such deposits demonstrates that the application of whole-ore-leaching may be limited and that the concentration of zinc, or at least the separation from acid-consuming gangue minerals, prior to leaching is essential to the successful recovery of zinc from these deposits. The recovery of zinc is dependent on an understanding of the geology of the deposit, the mineralogical association of zinc minerals with gangue minerals (Boni, 2005) and limitations of mining practice. Flow sheet development and the associated metallurgical test work to derive an economically viable treatment route from two of these deposits are discussed. Key parameters affecting zinc recovery by gravity separation and flotation are presented, demonstrating that even minor differences in mineralogy have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption. The study also deals with the determination of appropriate design parameters through metallurgical mapping of the dense media separation process.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers. The introduction of new technology into mining operations is seen as a strategic necessity by many mining companies, in order to improve safety and to improve operational effectiveness. Many attempts have been made in recent years to introduce new technologies into mining operations in southern Africa. Amongst these are noteworthy successes, as well as some disappointing failures. Often, the reason for failure does not lie with the technology itself, but with the work system into which the technology is introduced. Such failures may come with a significant opportunity cost, and have a detrimental effect on future development, simply because the system has not been adequately engineered, and the risks have not been adequately assessed and managed. This paper examines the reasons for such failures, and proposes a methodology to be followed to ensure successful and sustainable implementation of new technologies, such as to reduce technical and financial risk to the company, and to energize the workforce into ensuring the initial objectives of the project are met. The paper also focuses on the application of appropriate technology, and the development of technological applications which are commensurate with the level of development of the work environment into which it is introduced. The paper therefore focuses on the application of risk management, change management, systems engineering and feasibility analysis as being key elements of a successful and holistic technology implementation programme.

To simulate brittle rocks, a mixture of glastone, sand and water was used as a model material. Thin galvanized sheets were used to create joints in blocks made out of the model material. To investigate the failure modes and strength, both the intact material blocks as well as jointed model material blocks of size 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm having different joint geometry configurations were subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loadings. Results obtained from the intact model material blocks are used to validate a new intact rock failure criterion for biaxial loading. Results obtained from both the intact and jointed model material blocks are used to develop a strongly non-linear new rock mass failure criterion for biaxial loading. In this failure criterion, the fracture tensor component is used to incorporate the directional effect of fracture geometry system on jointed block strength. The failure criterion shows the important role the intermediate principal stress plays on rock mass strength. Zur Simulation spröder Gesteinsarten wurde ein Modellmaterial aus Dentalgips, Sand und Wasser hergestellt. Daraus wurden Blöcke gegossen, in denen mittels dünnen, galvanisierten Blechen Trennflächen erzeugt wurden. Die Blöcke mit Abmessungen von 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm wurden in einaxialen und biaxialen Druckversuchen belastet. Es wurde das Versagensverhalten und die Festigkeit von intakten Blöcken sowie durchtrennten Blöcken mit unterschiedlicher Trennflächengeometrie untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen der Versuche an intaktem Material wurde ein neues Versagenskriterium für biaxiale Belastungen validiert. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche an intakten und durchtrennten Blöcken wurden verwendet, um ein neues stark nicht-lineares Versagenskriterium für geklüftetes Gebirge unter biaxialer Belastung abzuleiten. Darin wird der Bruchtensor verwendet, um den Einfluss der Trennflächengeometrie auf die Festigkeit zu erfassen. Das Versagenskriterium stellt heraus, welche Bedeutung die mittlere Hauptspannung für die Gebirgsfestigkeit hat. Un mélange de platre dentaire, de sable et d’eau a été utilisé pour développer un matériau analogue des roches fragiles. De fines feuilles galvanisées permettent de créer des discontinuités représentatives des discontinuités naturelles dans des bloques fabriqués avec ce matériau analogue. Les modes de rupture et la résistance, tant pour le matériau intact que pour le matériau avec ses discontinuités, ont été étudiés sur des blocs de 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm soumis à des efforts de compression uniaxiaux et biaxiaux. Différentes configurations de géométrie de discontinuités ont été considérées. Les résultats obtenus à partir des blocs intacts permettent de vérifier un nouveau critère de rupture pour les roches intactes soumises à des efforts biaxiaux. Les résultats obtenus, tant avec les blocs intacts qu’avec les blocs avec discontinuités, sont utilisés pour développer un nouveau critère de rupture, fortement non linéaire, pour les massifs rocheux soumis à des chargements biaxiaux. Dans ce critère de rupture, un tenseur de fractures est introduit pour caractériser les effets directionnels de la géométrie des systèmes de discontinuité sur la résistance des blocs avec discontinuités. Ce critère de rupture démontre le rôle important de la contrainte principale intermédiaire sur la résistance des massifs rocheux.

Monitoring of the slopes of surface mines can prevent loss of life, loss of equipment, loss of production and possibly the loss of the mine. The effectiveness of such monitoring depends on the extent to which slopes give adequate advanced warning before failing, and on the ability of the monitoring system to detect such warning. In this paper an overview is given of slope monitoring requirements, from both the geotechnical and survey points of view, as well as the types of equipment and instrumentation that are available. Legal issues relevant to slope monitoring are also dealt with. It is concluded that conventional geotechnical and survey instrumentation will continue to have their place in slope monitoring. However, the slope monitoring scene has changed substantially in recent years. A real and volume-based monitoring equipment is now available and this has provided, and will continue to provide, the means to improve safety, and to enhance productivity in mining. Its benefit to slope management is substantial. In the near future it is expected that data obtained from such equipment will add a much needed new dimension to slope engineering, and be used to improve slope designs and to optimize slope angles.

The authors developed the TBM Excavation Control System (the TBM Navigator), in order to realize the advanced observational construction. During the excavation using this system, the rock strength value is immediately calculated from the TBM driving data as an index of rock properties, and the drill energy coefficient is also calculated from the drill logging data that is carried out using the probe hole ahead of the tunnel face. In this study, a new, geostatistical simulation-based method is proposed for the automatic prediction of the rock properties ahead of the tunnel face with good precision, using both the drill logging data and the TBM driving data. The applicability of this method is validated through the prediction at the actual tunnel excavation that passes through the faults. Les auteurs ont mis au point un Système de Contrôle de forage avec la machine à pleine section (Navigateur de la machine à pleine section), en vue de réaliser un système de surveillance plus efficace. Avec ce système, la résistance de la roche est immédiatement calculée, au cours du forage, à partir des données de conduite de la machine, comme indice des propriétés de la roche, et le coefficient d'énergie de la foreuse est également calculé à partir des données de log de forage collectées dans un trou de sonde foré dans le front de taille. Dans cette étude, on propose une nouvelle méthode basée sur la simulation géostatistique qui permet de prévoir d’une manière automatique, des propriétés de roches se trouvant derrière le front de taille avec une précision satisfaisante, à l’aide des données de log de forage et celles de conduite de la machine à pleine section. Cette méthode s’est avérée suffisamment précise au cours du forage d’un tunnel réel qui traversait une zone de failles. Die Autoren entwickelten das TBM Ausschachtungssteuerungssystem (den TBM Navigator), um noch besser überwachte Bauarbeiten zu ermöglichen. Unter Einsatz dieses Systems wird die Gesteinsfestigkeit während der Ausschachtungsarbeiten unmittelbar aus den TBM Antriebsdaten als ein Index für die Gesteinseigenschaften berechnet. Gleichzeitig wird auch der Bohrenergiekoeffizient aus den Bohrlogdaten berechnet, die an Hand der Probebohrung am Stirnende des Tunnels erhalten wurden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde ein neuartiges, auf geostatistischen Methoden basierendes Verfahren für die automatische und angemessen genaue Vorhersage der Gesteinseigenschaften am Stirnende des Tunnels vorgeschlagen, für das sowohl die Bohrlogdaten als auch die TBM Antriebsdaten verwendet werden. Die Anwendbarkeit dieser Methode wird durch die Vorhersage bei einer tatsächlichen, durch Verwerfungen verlaufenden Tunnelausschachtung bewiesen.

In 1994, Nkana smelter commissioned a multimillion US Dollar Chilean Teniente converter (CT) in its operations in order to improve its smelting technological base. The main objective was to reduce the overall smelting energy costs and increase the sulphur capture for sulphuric acid production to support the company?s leaching operations at Nchanga tailings leach plant. A decade of CT operations have since ensued following its installation and start-up. This paper provides a technical and operational audit of the performance of the CT in the first 10 years of its operations at Nkana smelter.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc.(Chemical Engineering) degree Chromite and talc are two major gangue minerals in platinum bearing UG2 ore processed from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa. During flotation, talc is effectively depressed by the addition of depressants. Chromite, on the other hand, is considered to be hydrophilic, its recovery is believed to follow water recovery and therefore recovered by entrainment only. In certain cases it has been shown that chromite can be activated by the reagent suite and hence is made amenable to true flotation. The aim of the work was to investigate the effect of the addition of copper sulphate as an activator and the effect of the depressant type and dosage on the recovery of chromite. The results of these experiments showed that copper sulphate, at higher dosages, activated the chromite. Low dosages of copper sulphate resulted in no chromite activation. This was observed at low depressant dosages of both IMP4 (guar gum) and KU5 (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)). When the depressant dosages were increased, at higher copper sulphate dosages, it was observed that the activated chromite was depressed by IMP4, but that the activation was still significant with the use of KU5. The activation of the chromite is attributed to the form of the copper species present in the solution and on the mineral surfaces at pH = 9 enhancing collector adsorption and thereby increasing hydrophobicity. These species were not measured directly and it is recommended that this should be further investigated using surface mineral techniques. Keywords: flotation; depressants; chromite; copper sulphate

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. Copper oxide ores deposits in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) contain at variable level cobalt oxide minerals. In contrast to copper oxide minerals which readily dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution, the cobalt oxide bearings are difficult to dissolve, especially if cobalt is present in the third oxidation state (Co2O3). This species become soluble after reduction of Co+3in Co+2. In practice, the use of reducing agent is therefore necessary in order to transform the insoluble minerals into soluble cobalt sulphate species. The following reducing agents are currently used at the Shituru plant: ferrous ions, which are present in leach solutions, pulverised copper or sodium meta bisulphite (MBS). Due to the high consumption of reducing agents (0,8 t MBS/t of solubilized Co; 1,2 t Cu/t-Co), cobalt production is expensive. The use of sulphur dioxide as reducing agent was then investigated in order to reduce operating cost. This reagent also presents the advantage of sulphuric acid production during the leaching process. It has been added in the leaching vessel (tank). From the laboratory and industrial tests, selective leaching of cobalt (78%) has been performed. The cobalt leaching kinetic depend on sulphur dioxide dosage. Dissolution of copper, iron and manganese remained very low. No emanation of SO2 gas was observed during the process.
