Up to now, Topsøe WSA (Wet gas Sulphuric Acid) plants have been in operation for almost 30 years, and close to 80 plants have been sold. In spite of its unique features and ability to treat gases without any prior drying, the WSA technology has had certain restrictions with regards to SO2 concentration in the feed gas, and the overall conversion of SO2 by catalytic means has been limited to approx. 99.7%. In commercial scale sulphuric acid production on the basis of elemental sulphur and metallurgical off-gases, there is a demand for higher SO2 conversion and treatment of gases with a higher content of SO2. Therefore Topsoe has further developed its WSA technology to cope with these demands. This paper will explain more about the principles of such new development and leave the delegate with a better understanding of the potentials of the new generation of the WSA technology from Topsoe.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

A pair of silicon rubber replicas of size 250 mm by 250 mm, from a natural rock joint, was used to produce several high strength concrete fracture replicas of different sizes, from 50 mm by 50 mm to 200 mm by 200 mm. The morphology of the concrete fracture replicas were digitized at the laboratory using a 3D-laser-scanning machine with high accuracy and resolution. The scale dependency of the geometrical properties, including surface roughness and aperture, of the samples were investigated using fractal method. The investigation was extended to study the scale effect on the mechanical properties of the concrete fracture replicas. Four concrete replicas having same geometry from each sampling size were sheared under four different normal loads. The results show that normal and shear stiffness and peak shear strength decrease with increasing sample size and decreasing normal stress. It is concluded that for accurate determination of geometrical and mechanical properties of rock joints in the laboratory and field scales, samples with size equal to or larger than stationarity limit are required. Die Morphologie der Beton Rissreplikas wurde mittels eines 3D-Laserscanners hoher Genauigkeit und Auflösung im Labor digitalisiert. Die Skalenabhängigkeit der geometrischen Eigenschaften, dies inklusive Oberflächenrauhigkeit und Öffnungsweite, wurden mittels Fraktalen bestimmt. Die Studie wurde durch die Untersuchung der mechanischen Eigenschaften der Betonrepliken erweitert. Hierbei wurden vier Betonrepliken der selben Geometrie jeder Probengrösse unter vier verschiedenen normalen Belastungen abgeschert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen das sowohl Normal- und Schersteifigkeit als auch die Spitzenscherfestigkeit mit zunehmender Probengrösse und abnehmender Normalspannung abnehmen. Es hat sich gezeigt, daß für eine genaue Bestimmung der geometrischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften von Felsklüften im Labor und im Feld Proben einer Größe gleich oder größer des stationären Limits verlangt werden. Deux répliques en gomme de silicone d’une fracture naturelle, de dimension 250 mm par 250 mm, ont été utilisées pour produire des répliques en béton de haute résistance de dimensions allant de 50 mm par 50 mm à 200 mm par 200 mm. La morphologie de ces répliques a été digitalisée au laboratoire à l’aide d’un laser-scanner 3D haute résolution et haute précision. L’influence de l’échelle des propriétés géométriques, incluant rugosité et ouverture, a été étudiée en utilisant la méthode des fractales. Des essais complémentaires ont été réalisés afin d’étudier l’effet d’échelle sur les propriétés mécaniques des répliques de fracture en béton. Quatre répliques béton de même géométrie pour les différentes tailles d’échantillons ont été cisaillées sous quatre valeurs de contrainte normale. Les résultats montrent que la rigidité normale et tangentielle ainsi que la résistance de pic diminuent en proportion de l’augmentation de la taille de l’échantillon et de la diminution des contraintes normales. On peut en conclure que, pour une détermination précise des propriétés géométriques et mécaniques des fractures au laboratoire et sur le terrain, des échantillons de taille égale ou supérieure à la limite stationnaire sont nécessaires.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

The bioleaching of arsenopyrite, the oxidation of arsenate and the precipitation of ferric arsenate are competing reactions, hence their rates depend on the relative concentrations of the respective species, and the activity of the bacterial culture. Bacterial arsenic resistance may be attributed to the Pst+Pit-mutation and an energy dependent efflux pump. Pst+Pit-mutations result in a reduced uptake of arsenate. This enables the bacteria to survive in solutions in which the arsenate concentration is significantly higher than the arsenite concentration. However, the excretion of arsenate requires energy. Therefore, in the absence of an energy source or during periods of reduced bacterial activity, the inhibitory effect of arsenate may manifest at concentrations to which the culture has been adapted. The chemical ferric leaching rate of pyrite and arsenopyrite decrease with a decrease in the solution redox and may be described using a modified Butler-Volmer equation. The bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation kinetics of L. ferrooxidans also depend on the redox potential, and can be described using a Michaelis-Mententype model modified to account for both temperature and pH. A model developed using the independently determined ferric leaching, and ferrous-iron oxidizing kinetics, has been shown to compare well with the experimental data for the continuous bioleaching of pyrite. The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation. The acoustic signals emitted from a laboratory-scale ball mill were used for the estimation of the comminution of two complex sulphide ores, viz. Merensky and UG2 ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The digital acoustic signals were transformed to power spectral densities that could be related to particle size distributions (-75 µm to 4000 µm) in the mill by use of continuum regression. This approach is more general than principal component regression methods or Kalman filtering used previously and resulted in significantly more accurate calibration in the case of the Merensky ore, where approximately 93.4% of the variance in the particle size distributions could be explained. With fewer data available, the variance in the particle size distributions in the UG2ore could be explained less accurately (82.4%), but still satisfactorily. In addition, smaller particle sizes (less than 300 µm) could be modelled more accurately in the case of the UG2 ore.

The data base of failed coal pillars in South Africa was analysed with regard to the time of failure in an effort to develop a method to predict how long after their formation coal pillars will fail. It was found that meaningful results could only be obtained by splitting the data base up into groups that displayed similar behaviour. It was postulated, based on observation and experience, that coal pillars fail by a process of progressive weakening progressing into the pillar from the edges. Minimum pillar dimensions to ensure failure were calculated?these were the dimensions that corresponded to a minimum ?real? factor of safety. From the scaling distance required to reach the minimum safety factor, rates of scaling for the failed pillars were calculated based on the observed real lives of the pillars. It was found that the rates of scaling were unique for different mining areas and that they correlated directly with mining height and inversely with time. Using the derived scaling rates, the predicted pillar lives were back calculated for the pillars in the data base of failed pillars. In two of the three groups, the predicted lives correlated well with the observed lives on a one-to-one comparison. In all cases, the predicted lives were in the same time range as the observed lives. Overall, the frequency of predicted lives closely replicated the observed frequency of observed lives of the pillars in the data base of failed pillars. The method was successful in distinguishing between the data base of failed and a representative sample of intact pillars. While the predictions matched the observed lives of failed pillars, the predictions of expected lives for intact (hitherto unfailed) pillars were orders of magnitude greater. It is now possible to estimate the frequencies of future pillar failures for the purposes of mine closure and undermining of surface structures within broad bands.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10?15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed, and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

?Soil quality is the capacity of a soil to function, within ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant, animal and human health?. In the long-term, vegetative rehabilitation of mining wastes aims at, as far as possible, the proper ecological integration of the reclaimed area into the surrounding landscape, which is sustainable and requires minimal maintenance. A certain succession pattern is therefore needed. Recent ecological concepts recognize the role of the substrate?s quality and nutrients in affecting the rates and directions of succession patterns. Although pedogenesis and eventually soil quality in mine waste are not well known, monitoring of soil quality parameters in kimberlite mine tailings reveal a remarkable establishment and or improvement of specifics oil quality indicators. During the same time the vegetative cover?s total functionality as well as reproductive ability improved. Functions of soil, and thus soil quality, can be assessed at the field, farm, ecosystem, pedosphere, and global scale. It is recognized, however, that management of soil becomes increasingly difficult at larger scales, but for demarcated mine waste sites it is possible to ameliorate and manage and assess soil functions and quality. Therefore the significance of the study is the following: soil functions and quality become inseparable from the idea of system sustainability, and are considered as key indicators of ecosystem sustainability on rehabilitated mine tailings material.

Geologists, engineers, technicians and surveyors have successfully utilized technical software in the mining industry for over 30 years. Software for processing survey, geology, mine engineering and planning information make these functions more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and reducing data processing errors. While these systems have been improved incrementally overtime, new systems that represent giant leaps in technology have been introduced to help mining operations increase productivity and reduce costs. However, their widespread use within the industry has left individual companies without a competitive advantage. Additionally, the ability of these applications to provide the productivity improvements required in today’s uncertain market conditions has since peaked. The next wave of technology—integration of independent software applications—is just starting to emerge and will have a significant effect on the productivity of mining operations. To reap the productivity gains required to remain competitive, mining companies must exploit the collective knowledge and experience of every employee in the organization. Integration of independent software application allows companies to leverage information from all activities, enabling staff to make better decisions to improve productivity. This paper outlines the importance of integration as productivity enabler. Key performance indicators, strategic mine planning, resources management and mine-to-mill integration are discussed as processes that enable productivity. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS)is introduced as the industry’s first integrated solution that enables these productive processes. The paper concludes with a comment on the level of change required to realize the benefits of integration.

Block model estimates are commonly calculated by the well-established technique of kriging. The mathematics are well established, but implementation details require site-specific considerations. Checking and measuring the performance of the estimates is important to ensure the block model is suitable for its intended purpose. There are different criteria for long-term planning and short-term planning. The implementation of kriging should be checked with cross-validation and assessed for conditional bias and departure from theoretical optimality with the calculation of kriging efficiency. A new expression of kriging efficiency, which compares the kriging variance with the theoretically optimal kriging variance, is developed to aid in this assessment. The assessment tools presented here can be applied in a number of situations; however, ordinary kriging with a reasonably large search performs well in most cases.

A voluntary comprehensive environmental Risk Assessment was launched at the end of 2004 by the International Chromium Development Association. The completion is scheduled for mid 2006.EURAS, a leading environmental consultancy, was commissioned for this project, as this firm wrote in particular the Metals Environmental Risk Assessment Guidelines, the reference document for the metals and metals compounds, in particular for the forthcoming European new Chemical Policy and the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). This project follows a stepwise approach, comprising 3 distinct steps: - Initial Risk Assessment: compilation, evaluation of the existing effects and exposure data for chromium III compounds and chromium metal. This information will be used for the compilation of an initial Risk Assessment Report. - Data gap analysis: which type of additional effects data should be collected and/or which exposure scenarios merit a more detailed targeted risk assessment? Recommendations and/or suggestions for further research will be formulated. - Road map: prioritization and ranking of the different proposed research programs. The presentation will mainly focus on the results and recommendations of the initial environmental Risk Assessment from an International perspective and not from an European point of view. - Hazard assessment ? definition of the Predicted Non effect Concentration (PNEC) for each environmental compartment (water, sediment, soil) - Exposure assessment ? definition of the Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PEC) for each environ-mental compartment - Comparison of the local PEC with PNEC for the chromium III compounds and chromium metal EU industry sectors covered in the project: mining of chromite, metallurgical production of chromium metal, chromium containing alloys production, production of trivalent chromium chemicals and the main applications (pigments, leather tanning, etc..). The current status on the environmental Classification and Ranking for chromium III compounds, Chromium metal and its alloys in the GHS will also be covered.

A quality characteristic analysed through construction of the Shewhart control chart is required to be normally distributed. In mining applications, this assumption is often violated as many quality characteristics follow skewed or lognormal distribution. In this paper, two methods were investigated using a heuristic approach for setting up the control limits for a skewed population. Based on these approaches a Mode chart, and a Weighted Variance (WV) control charts were constructed. The performance of the proposed methods was compared with the normal based Shewhart method through a case study conducted in a surface mine supplying iron ore to a steel plant. A simulation study was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods over the Shewhart method. The study revealed that the Shewhart control charts generated more out of control alarms compared with the Mode and Weighted Variance control charts for a skewed population of Fe%. The simulation results also revealed that for extremely high skewed population, the WV control chart and Mode control chart provided higher probability of coverage than the Shewhart method; although the detection rate (probability of detection) of out of control condition for these methods was slightly reduced compared with Shewhart method.

The principles of microwave heating are discussed with reference to dielectric properties, heating phenomena and microwave equipment. Microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp process is examined on a laboratory scale, with special attention being given to highlight the problem areas and specific considerations related to microwave heating. Results indicate that microwave regeneration of carbon with 40% moisture on a wet basis by heating to 650°C with steam addition regenerates the carbon to virgin carbon activity levels but with a higher abrasion resistance. A preliminary economic assessment showed that the capital cost for 120 kg/h microwave unit would be R540 000 with an annual operating cost of R 320/t carbon. These figures yield a return on investment of 12%. The aim of this paper is to provide an introduction to microwave heating and to illustrate its application to the microwave regeneration of granular activated carbon for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process.

A selective dispersion process is presented and the work carried out to find optimum process conditions to minimise the colouring material in ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is described. The feed material is the overflow product from a hydrocyclone which results from using a Denver Attritioning machine with semi-autogenous grinding for one hour and a 1:1 ore/water ratio. By using sodium silicate (SS), with pH 9 and pulp density 5%, the iron content (as colouring impurities) is decreased from 0.21% in the original concentrate to 0.12% in the final concentrate. The degree of whiteness reached is improved to 85% from 63% in the original material. However, by using hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at pH 10 at the same pulp density, the iron content decreased to about 0.073% and hence the whiteness degree increased to about 96%.

The South African coal mining industry is currently disposing of about 10 million tons of ultra-fine coal (<150 µm) per year. Once discarded, these sulphur-containing ultra-fines contribute to several environmental problems. As part of a project initiated by the Water Research Commission to investigate the use of Cleaner Production (CP) in the mining industry, a study was carried out to determine whether a CP approach could be used to identify opportunities to reduce this coal waste, and to determine which of these opportunities would be most feasible. In order to do this, a CP assessment was conducted at three case study collieries in the South African Witbank coalfield. Mass-balancing and sampling, followed by laboratory characterisation tests and site surveys, were used to determine the quantity, quality and sources of the ultra-fine coal at the three collieries. Literature reviews, brainstorming sessions and interviews then followed to generate the CP options. An environ-mental, economic and technical feasibility assessment was then prepared for each option, to determine the most viable interventions for implementation. A number of opportunities were identified through the assessment. By preventing coarser coal from being discarded with the ultra-fine coal, the quantity of coal disposed of could be decreased at all three collieries, and by up to 24% in one case. Increasing the crusher top size would reduce the amount of coal that is milled to less than 150 µm, so that less is wasted. The ultra-fines that have already been disposed of on slurry dams can be completely reclaimed and converted into a valuable product, which can be sold as power station feedstock. The newly processed ultra-fines could be beneficiated using flotation and exported together with the coarser coal. The results of the assessments thus suggested that workable CP opportunities to reduce ultra-fine coal wastage exist at the sites investigated, and that their feasibility is colliery-specific. The associated financial benefits of the proposed options suggested that CP is a realistic approach to addressing environmental problems. The paper deals with the technologies required for opening up anew idealized ultra-deep level mine. First the overall philosophy of accessing ore at ultra depths is discussed. Then the individual technologies which will be required are explored. Finally a detailed overview on one of the key technologies, namely tunnel support, is given. Because this project is still in its infancy, few definitive answers are provided; instead each of the envisaged technologies are briefly discussed, with emphasis on those which require the element of speed for rapidly accessing the ore body.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. Input-output analysis is a major branch of quantitative economics, and is used to analyse the flow of goods and services between production sectors in a national economy. Its purpose is to determine the relative value-adding capacity of each sector. The model has also, in recent years, found increasing use in assessing the environmental and ecological impact of development projects. It has, however, never been applied to individual production facilities, such as large mines, which themselves have complex economic structures, through which there is a flow of goods and services. Conventional cost and accounting systems, as used on mines, treat production sectors as separate cost centres, and do not determine the inter-relationships between them. This can lead to incorrect conclusions on the relative value of sectors and their impact on the total economic performance of the facility. This paper explains the basic principles of input-output analysis, and presents an example of its application to a simplistic model of a mine, which is used in the absence of any real data. The paper concludes that, by forcing definition of the value adding function of each sector, input output analysis will facilitate control of inputs, or costs. This will result in optimal application of resources and exploitation of ore reserves. The authors realise the model needs to be tested on an operating mine, and hope this paper will result in an opportunity to do so.
