The imbalance between the coal resources contained in thin seams (1,5 m or less) and the production from them is outlined. It is suggested that an Increase In the exploitation of thin coal seams is necessary, and that drum-type continuous miners can produce a substantial amount of any increase. Continuous miners are employed in a number of mining methods including bord-and-pillar, pillar extraction (stooping), rib-pillar extraction, and shortwalling. These techniques of mining are evaluated with respect to production rates and the cost of extraction for South African conditions included in these evaluations are the types of equipment used to transport coal from the mining machine to the section conveyor belt. Computer simulation techniques are used to generate the required production levels, and interpretations are made of other results from the computer modelling. For thin, coal seams, bord-and-pillar mining utilizing continuous haulage is apparently the most productive and cost-effective of all the methods using the continuous miner. The relative efficiencies of the other techniques of mining and of coal-transportation vehicles are also outlined.

This paper deals with the development of the cut-and-fill mining method at the Broken Hill orebody of Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited, at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province of South Africa. Lead, copper, zinc, and silver are produced. Production started in January 1976, being confined to blasthole production methods in the upper, steeply dipping areas of the orebody. This blasthole reserve is 70 per cent depleted, and pillar extraction is in progress. The balance of the production tonnage, 60 kt per month, is produced from three cut-and-fill stopes situated in the flatter-dipping areas of the orebody. The cut-and-fill mining method at Black Mountain is a result of research and planning activities that included the use of modelling, laboratory tests, mathematical analyses, in situ tests, and experience gained from other mining operations. These investigations and the resulting developed methods and designs are summarized in the paper.

Now a new generation of computerized drill rigs has been launched and they are based on modern standard PC-computer technology. The rigs have been well embraced by the market and more than 100 units have left the assembly line. The new generation has taken a quantum leap forward with respect to drilling accuracy, logging capabilities, reduction of manpower in some types and serviceability compared to the previous generation of drill rigs. The Can bus technology, well proven in the automobile products, is the backbone in the new generation control system of Atlas Copco. The short-term development is now focused on establishing this new automation platform on other product lines of Atlas Copco products. The long-term objectives is to offer the mining industry Atlas Copco products with one common automation platform. Essential for Atlas Copcois to contribute to the work with the on-going Data Exchange standard between mining machines and mining computer systems (IREDES). Our belief is that an accepted standard will make mine automation programs affordable for a wider base of the mining industry, because of the possibilities to a cost effective integration of different equipment with a minimum of system integration problems and machine specific interfaces.

For a number of years the steel tube and pipe industry has worked on resolving problems of product quality. These have largely been resolved and new products have been developed to take advantage of new developments. To fully coordinate market acceptance guidance on use of galvanized piping was also required. This was largely achieved locally in 2004 with the publication by the SABS of ARP 060 - Guidance on the use and application of hot dip galvanized steel piping for the transportation of potable water in South Africa. Use of this document is not easy however and a need to have a simple computer model to assist the specifier was identified. Working with a major tube and pipe manufacturer this is now being developed and this paper will provide the background to the model?s development and its intended use. There is still a need for a partner Code of Practice on the performance of galvanized piping in buried conditions and the need for this will be highlighted together with current available information.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. The equilibrium between carbon-saturated Fe-Cr-Si-C alloys and SiO2-CaO-MgO-A2O3-CrO2-FeOy slags was studied under atmospheres of argon and carbon monoxide at temperatures of 1500 and 1600°C. The equilibrium distribution of chromium, silicon, and iron between the slag and the metal phases was determined for different compositions of both phases under different atmospheres and temperatures. It is shown that silicon transfer from the slag to the metal increases with increasing temperature, decreasing carbon monoxide partial pressure, decreasing carbon content of the metal, increasing chromium-to-iron ratio of the metal, increasing silica content of the slag, and decreasing lime-to-alumina ratio of the slag. Some activity calculations were made for the experiments conducted at 1600OC in a carbon monoxide atmosphere. It is also shown that a decrease in the iron content and an increase in the slag basicity decrease the chromium content of the slag. A major proportion of the chromium present in the slag was found to be in the divalent state under the highly reducing conditions prevailing in the experiments. The chromous capacities of these slags were calculated and were found to decrease with increasing basicity.

The geological conditions in the Vierfontein area ~re such that conventional pillar extraction ~stooping) cannot be practised safely or efficiently. Both the open-end lift and the pocket-and-fender methods of pillar extraction have been tried with little success because of problems with roof control and ground stability. The main reasons for the difficulties are the coarse-grained sandstone roof, local weaknesses in the coal seam, and the rate at which the pillars were extracted. The mine has practised bord-and-pillar mining since it started production in 1952, and considerable reserves of coal are contained in the pillars. As an alternative to total pillar extraction, in which hand-loading methods were practised, a system of partial pillar extraction using mechanized-mining methods ~11"modified goaf-line support has been evolved. These remnant coal pillars (snooks) remaining after partial extraction ofthe pillar, together with the installation of 1,2 m" matpacks and a double line of fullcolumn resin roofbolts, ensure control of the edge of the area that has been mined out (goaf). Where roof conditions preclude the use of conventional pillar-extraction methods, this method holds promise as a safe and efficient alternative for the recovery of coal from pillars and for an increase in the volumetric extraction of the reserves within a mining panel.

The use of fill in deep-level gold mining presents the possibility of achieving considerable economic and operational benefits if conventional support can be eliminated. Unfortunately, the combination of the properties of tailings from gold reduction plants and the narrow, flat, tabular reefs being exploited make conventional hydraulic filling very unpractical. Laboratory tests indicate that, with careful control of water content, these tailings can provide an adequate fill material. A variety of bonding agents have been investigated, and the most practical seems to be ordinary Portland cement. Even at very low cement contents some cohesion is achieved. The design and layout for a complete fill support system using hydraulic transport, dewatering, and pneumatic placement are discussed, and a surface field trial indicated that the principles involved are correct and that acceptable results can be achieved. This system and material would completely eliminate conventional timber and brick support, and a preliminary economic analysis indicates that filling is cost competitive on a direct replacement basis. All the operations for a full-scale operation are available or have been developed to a stage sufficient to indicate that the system is practical, although certain operations require further refinement.

It is suggested that an increase in the production from thin coal seams in South Africa is necessary, and that a substantial amount of any increase will be mined by the bord-and-pillar method. For the purpose of this study, a thin coal seam was regarded as any seam 1,5 m thick or less to the minimum thickness at which mechanized equipment can operate in bord-and-pillar workings. The equipment being utilized in thin-seam bord-and-pillar layouts includes conventional equipment, load-hauldump cars (scoops), and drum-type and Fairchild-Wilcox continuous miners. Comparisons are made of these types of equipment for bord-and-pillar mining at various seam thicknesses within the thin-seam range. The evaluations involved production rates and the cost of extraction for South African conditions, use being made of an existing computer modelling technique in the generation of production rates. The indications are that, for seam thicknesses greater than 0,9 m, drum-type continuous miners utilizing continuous haulage are the most productive and cost-effective equipment at present operating in thin-seam bord-and- pillar workings. Where seams thinner than 0,9 m are to be exploited, Fairchild-Wilcox continuous miners, particularly the Mark 22, produce the most coal at the lowest cost.

Abstract A new approach is introduced for study of the behaviour of geotechnical strength parameter prior to slope analysis to ascertain whether strength parameters of slope materials are homogenous or heterogeneous at different mine depths. The strength parameters used for the study are uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and shear strength. The analysis is based on statistical analysis of variance technique for one-way classification. The application of the technique is given through a case study in an openpit mine. Actual observations of rockburst damage, together with some theoretical considerations, strongly suggest that conventional approaches to the design of tunnel support are inappropriate where there is a significant seismic risk. The present widely used support systems, which are based on stiff, fully grouted re-bars, are inadequate where rock displacement velocities exceed 1 m/s. It is shown by means of a simple conceptual model that yielding of the support elements is essential to ensure their survival when they are subject to the high strain rates typical of severe rockbursts. The model proposes that the total load in the element is an impulsive tensile force imposed and sustained by a single 'tributary' block ejected from the tunnel wall. The stability of the system is determined from a comparison of the kinetic energy developed by the block with the energy of deformation absorbed by a grouted steel tendon. A novel test procedure was developed for the validation of this approach, and for an examination of the energy-absorbing capacity of stiff and yielding tendons. The results of an initial series of tests showed that the recently developed cone-bolt is an effective yielding device. It absorbs twenty times more impulsive-load energy than is consumed by the complete fracture of grouted re-bar of equivalent strength, and it remains totally unscathed. Importantly, the results demonstrate that the ejection model is not merely an explanatory concept, but can be used as a representative and valid design method.

From the perspective of management control, most mining operations can be represented by a hierarchy comprising four layers. The base of this hierarchy consists of the individual pieces of equipment that are used to break and transport rock. The next level comprises the coordinated interaction between different pieces of equipment, termed a process. An operation results from the bringing together of different processes within a common discipline, such as mining or hydrometallurgy. Finally, an enterprise is formed when the separate mining, concentrating and smelting business units are combined. To date, much of the literature written on the topic of mining automation has focused on the equipment level, specifically on removing the operator from production mining equipment. This focus should not, however, overshadow advances registered in automation at both the process and enterprise levels. Only at the operations level of the hierarchy has little progress been made. While automated equipment, process management and enterprise resource planning are a current reality; it is argued that the benefits from automation have, to date, been largely elusive. It is further argued that full benefits of automating other levels will only be fully achieved when this ‘gap’ in the mining automation hierarchy has been addressed and an uninterrupted, process-wide information flow across the entire operation is achieved. Furthermore, it will be reasoned that so-called vertical integration can only be achieved with an automated operational level in place. It is believed that all the necessary building blocks are in place and that the industry is ready for this development. The paper concludes by presenting a vision for what operational level automation would achieve.

Mining-metallurgical complex is the base of any economics and influences directly on practically all branches of world economics. Therefore the task of estimation and selection of investment decisions in mining industry adequate to modern market conditions and the task of decreasing multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty are very actual. An uncertainty of investment alternatives is explained by a number of reasons, main of which are a presence of several investors types, an unstable situation on the market and an absence of evident relations between appraisal criteria used. Maximum increasing of formalization and objectivity of information technologies applied for an estimation permits to reduce the uncertainty of investment variants estimation. A number of principled innovations, allowing to solve the task of decreasing of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty, are introduced into the information technology of estimating and selecting investment decisions in mining-metallurgical branch, developed by us. In the article the necessity of including a cognitive model into developed selection mechanism, which allows to take into consideration inter-influences of used critera, has been grounded. Besides, the forecasting model considering interconnected time rows has been applied for increasing the world conjuncture forecast quality. Further in the article main metrics types have been characterized and application of weighted Chebyshev’s metrics as the most compromised from all studied metrics for variants selecting has been proved, and also the developed procedure of directional search of effective compromise decisions has been described. Brief characteristic of designed instrumental means of multi-criteria variants estimation and selection finalizes the article. In conclusion expedience and efficiency of using the developed information technology for reduction of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty have been grounded.

Much of the technology and methodology extensively employed in current mining operations is in the mature phase of its lifecycle and, consequently, subject to the principle of diminishing returns. It is probable that future gains in productivity and safety of the magnitude essential for the sustained economic viability of the industry will be derived only from a determined technological development programme. The history of trackless mechanized mining, which represented a radical change in methodology in deep-level gold mines, is reviewed. The benefits and obstacles to the realization of the full potential are highlighted. Similarly, an overview is given of alternative mechanization developments in South Africa. In addition to the development and application of advanced technology, an envelope of operating parameters relevant to each methodology must be engineered to facilitate the site-specific selection of the most appropriate. Furthermore, a mechanism for the evaluation of cost effectiveness is essential to the decision-making process. The narrow, tabular orebodies of relatively low dip that are encountered in the South African hard-rock mining industry make the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of stoping equipment extremely difficult. The machinery that has been available to date has demonstrated only limited site-specific success. The development of suitable machinery must necessarily be initiated and driven by the South African mining industry in collaboration with the major equipment manufacturers in the world.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10–40 km in length. Road networks for these vehicles have historically been designed and maintained empirically, relying heavily on local experience. Whilst it is possible to construct amine haul road that requires no maintenance over its service life, this would be prohibitively expensive, as would the converse but rather in terms of vehicle operating and maintenance costs. An optimal functional design will include a certain amount and frequency of road maintenance which can be planned, scheduled and optimized within the limits of required road performance and minimum vehicle operating and road maintenance costs. For existing mine haul road networks, which may not be optimally designed and maintained, the problem of identifying existing deficiencies, quantifying their impact and assigning priorities within the constraints imposed by limited capital equipment and manpower is problematic. This is reflected in the fact that most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. The aim of this paper is to present a road maintenance management system which utilizes on-board truck diagnostic data in conjunction with computer-based truck dispatch systems. Through a comparative analysis of the various haul road maintenance systems available to a mine, a condition-triggered road maintenance system is introduced. System architecture, evaluation of real-time data, event trigger level determination, specific condition signatures and real-time rolling resistance calculation are discussed. Finally the event, activity, transaction and notification system is portrayed in conjunction with the determination of key productivity indicators and benchmarked road and truck performance. SYNOPSIS The phase equilibria, viscosities and sulphur capacities of titaniferous slags were determined in the composition range of CaO = 30 to 0 per cent, MgO = 0 to 30 per cent, SiO2 = 19.69 per cent, AI.O. = 13.12 per cent and TiO2 = 37.19 per cent. The phase equilibria were determined by high temperature microscopy, the viscosities were measured using a rotating outer cylinder viscometer and the sulphur capacities were evaluated from the results obtained by equilibrating the slag in a gas stream of CO, CO2 and SO2. The behaviour of these titaniferous slags under reducing conditions was examined. Possible use of the slags for aggregate, or slag-cement, and the possibility of extracting the TiO2 are discussed. These titaniferous magnetites occur as segregations in the gabbro body and the TiO2 is mainly present within the structure of other constituent minerals but also occurs in smaller amounts as ilmenite and ulvospinel. The vanadium is thought to be present in the iron oxide phase due to isomorphous replacement of the iron. Until very recently, it was feared that the high titania content of these titaniferous magnetites would militate against their value as useful iron ores. Written contribution by J.F. Curtist The paper is an interesting exercise in the application of mathematics to a theoretical situation presumed to oc¬cur underground. However, some of the assumptions on which the calculations are based are unlikely to occur in any actual mining situation. Assumptions made in the paper Objections to these assumptions are noted seriatim. (1) `it is assumed that any loading-rate effect will be small and can be ignored' (p. 3). A loading rate of the order of 50 kN-12 per cent of the maximum load-is customary to prevent the props being dislodged by the blast. (2) `it is unlikely that all the props will be installed with their full stroke available, but for the purpose of this analysis, it is assumed that this is the case' (p. 3). A more reasonable assumption would be that, with the most careful selection of prop length and the most rigid control of stope width, the available stroke length would on average be reduced by the order of 70 mm on installation-20 per cent of full stroke. (3) `each support unit supports a block of 3,3 m2 bound¬ed by vertical fractures with zero cohesion that are parallel and at right-angles to the stope face respec¬tively' (p. 5). Joughin and Jager have shown this to be an unwar¬ranted assumption in respect of the positioning, the direction, and the dip of the fractures present in a stope in rockburst conditions. If, as assumed, there was `zero cohesion' between such blocks, the removal of a hydraulic prop in row 3 supporting such a block would ensure that it fell out before a profile prop could be installed in the same position. (4) `the height of each of these blocks is 3,0 m, the volume of each block is 9,9M3, the mass of each block is 27 225 kg' (p. 5). The concept of individual props being affected by dis¬crete blocks of known and uniform dimensions of relatively low ground velocities (less than or equal to 2,16 m/s) acting in line with the axis of the prop is one that lends itself to neat mathematical calcula¬tions. It does not, however, bear much similarity to the actual conditions that are exposed underground in excavations where rockbursts occur.
