The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

SYNOPSIS This review article first highlights the past performance of the industry and discusses the manner in which the development of the industry has followed a logical progression from mining to the production of mineral and metal products of specification purity. Then the numerous constraints against a greater contribution by the industry are enumerated. Attention is drawn to the extent of further processing that can be undertaken in the context of mining and metallurgical processing, not only to indicate the benefits that can be derived from the added-value conferred on a mineral or metal commodity during each stage of its further processing, but also to point out some important corollaries of further processing. The many opportunities and challenges for an increased contribution by the minerals and metals industry are then reviewed. This major section includes a list of commodities for which increased penetration of export markets could be sought because the increasing resistance level (a term developed in this paper) has not been attained; a list of commodities that are imported at present, many of which could be produced locally on the basis of identified resources and expertise; a list of commodities for which additional uses should be developed so that South Africa, which possesses the largest reserves and is the largest exporter, can increase its production rate; and examples of commodities for which further processing is still at an early stag*..

INTRODUCTION During the past decade a wealth of knowledge has been acquired about the mechanisms and reactions responsible for the physical properties of metals. In the field of steels, in particular, research of a fundamental nature has enabled us to interpret mechanical properties such as hardness, brittleness, creep strength, etc., in terms of atomic interactions. So rapid has been the development of physical metallurgy in some fields that publications are often outdated by the time they appear in print. The development of new steel products has been rather empirical by nature in the past and only during the past few years have new products been "designed" in terms of known physico-metallurgical phenomena. However, although this is a great stride forward it should be added that the development of a commercially successful product is a far more complicated process. In addition to the physico-metallurgical background this requires consideration of factors such as low production cost, market research and probably most valuable of all, an interested end user to co-operate in the development. This paper deals rather briefly with three of the most recent developments in steels in Britain with which the author has had some association. The main purpose of this is to demonstrate how the improved properties of the new product are based upon established physico-metallurgical phenomena. Generally speaking a commercially successful product of the type described here offers similar properties to that of an existing product at lower cost or has improved properties or features such as greater ease of cold forming, at similar cost. ULTRA-FINE GRAIN STRUCTURAL STEELS The development of higher yield strength structural steels dates back over a considerable number of years and has led to a variety of types. The one described below contains niobium as a grain refiner in an otherwise conventional mild steel matrix. By controlled rolling in a strip mill considerably increased yield strengths are obtained. In Fig. 1 are shown somewhat diagrammatically the relative hardening effects of carbon and manganese on ferrite. It will be seen that strength is enhanced by the solid solution hardening effect of manganese and the pearlite content. An obvious limitation of high pearlite content is a lack of cold workability and weldability. Manganese has to be restricted to low levels for the same reasons. The two other mechanisms which are known to impart higher strength are precipitation hardening and grain refinement. Precipitation hardening is impractical in most cases for structural steels and it is therefore clear that only grain refinement remains as a potentially useful strengthening mechanism.

"The crude ores from the LKAB mines are sorted and refined into a number of products. As there are a number of different plants the flow of material is often complex.in connection with studies of a proposed extensive investment program it was necessary to get a good measure of the changes which would be caused in the total profit by the different possible investments. A linear programming model was set up to accomplish this, and to cover the consequential effects on the production system. The objective function of the model maximized the total profit, taking into account restrictions in materials balances, blending conditions, production capacities and market. The changes in total profit resulting from the different investment alternatives, together with investment and fixed costs, were used in a series of investment analyses. The application has proved to be very successful and the results come very near to what was expected."

There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the main strategic restructuring aspects of companies that are directly (coalmines) or indirectly (companies that depend on coalmines) linked to coalmining. An attempt is also made to determine the principal factors required for the successful execution of a restructuring process in companies focused on the basic activities of coalmining, such as companies that provide supporting activities. The restructuring process exerts an influence on the whole area that relies on coalmining. So coordination of activities among the government, the local community, and the coalmine is very important. This is the major premise of this paper. The first section of the paper focuses on identifying and analysing the key factors in restructuring and a selection of key methods, drawing on past and present practice. The key factors to be considered in a model of enterprise restructuring in the coalmining sector are considered. The second section is dedicated to the actual design of the model of enterprise restructuring in the coal industry. The proposed model is based on positive experiences in the restructuring of coalmining companies in Europe, with an emphasis on Slovenia, successful approaches to crisis management in corporations, and identifying key areas in bringing about a strategic turnarounds in company operation. To support the argument for the key business areas, a brief summary of empiric findings has been included to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and the restructuring process. The summary is based on the survey done in both Slovenian coalmining companies (especially in Velenje Coal Mine) and their subsidiaries. The Mine Planning Department of Rio Tinto Management Services South Africa has installed an interactive graphic work station to assist with the long- term mine planning of Palabora. Previously, the planning was drafted manually after which digitised areas were fed to the computerised ore reserve system. This method was slow, tedious, prone to error and was becoming incapable of meeting new planning parameters. To assist the planning engineer an interactive graphic system was developed, and subsequently a rewrite of the ore reserve reporting system was incorporated. The work station has reasonable computing power and, when not utilised for graphics, has been found suitable for the evaluation of various non- graphical applications, a recent example of which was the in-pit crusher investigation. This project, in contrast to similar studies, was not based on a fixed system throughput but rather on a well designed system which would be operated at its own optimum capacity. In order to determine the probable throughput a simple simulator was designed to model the crushing and conveying system. This paper describes the investigation into the specifications for the work station, the selection of hardware, operating system and languages. An over- view is then given of the graphic planning system. The in-pit crushing simulation has been included as an example of how the work station has been applied to other, non graphical, applications.

In this paper we present The Ultimate Flotation Cell, a newly developed flotation cell that is proving very popular in the industry. All flotation cells have only one purpose and that is the recovery of the required product, the patented impeller and disperser system of the Ultimate Flotation Cell allows total flexibility in order to achieve the optimal recovery. This ability to tune the cell performance provides the optimization of the ?capture? (collection) stage, all existing models address the need for a wide bubble size distribution (100µm-2 mm) to obtain a better flotation size-by-size, Yoon, 1999,Yoon 2000, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1999. The Ultimate Flotation Cell provides flexible performance optimization. This ability to optimize the flotation regime particular to a specific ore is achieved by the following factors: ? The impeller allows vastly improved air induction rates compared to conventional and sparged cells. This ability to induce and disperse large quantities of air, in a controlled manner, allows the cells to be tuned to give the optimal Sb by varying the rotational speed via a VSD which every cell is fitted with. ? The patented impeller gives a very constant and stable air induction rate, which ensures that the cell?s circulation pattern is constant, giving a very stable surface, allowing optimal froth depth. ? Although conventional dart valve, level control can be offered, great success has been achieved with a simple draft tube/sand relief device. ? The cells have a inlet design similar to the old Denver ?Cell-to-Cell? design, which guarantees the at lease one pass through the mixing zone in each cell. Actual plant performance data will be presented from two plants, one in Zambia and the other in the DRC.

"A computer model of the rutile, ilmenite and zircon industry was developed jointly by Associated Minerals Consolidated and Consolidated Gold Fields for exploring marketing strategies and making predictions over a ten-year period. The industry is described briefly and the reasons for modelling it and choosing a deterministic approach explained. The economic structure of the model and its level of complexity are discussed. The necessity and techniques for convenient input and clear output, the team composition and the method of work are discussed.The reasons for the choice of FORTRAN, large computers, remote batch terminals and the vital importance of fast turn-round are discussed.Costs in staff time and computing are given, with an assessment of the reasons for the success of the model. The model is used on a regular basis to aid management decisions."

"The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). A theoretical model for prediction of dissolved gold loss from a rotary vacuum filter was developed as part of a program to implement optimizing control on gold plants The filter was modelled using a modification of the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and the Choudhury and Dahlstrom washing equation. The model has three parameters which must be determined from accumulated data before predictions can be made. These are the cake and cloth resistances and the filter washing efficiency. The model predicts with a fair degree of accuracy the response of the filter to changes in the independent variables and will therefore be a useful tool in the plant optimization study.

In mine production scheduling problems are well-known, where most are categorised into deterministic and non-deterministic NP-hard problems because of their complexity. Many researchers have attempted to solve the problem by applying various optimisation techniques. While using traditional methods they observed extreme difficulty in solving highly complex problems. In the 1990s, many researchers addressed long-term production scheduling (LTPS) by using simulated annealing, the genetic algorithm, the tabu search algorithm, and the ant colony algorithm. These algorithms are known as the meta-heuristic algorithms, and have proved to be the most efficient algorithms for solving LTPS thus far. The firefly algorithm is one of the best methods for visualising problems related to LTPS, and provides the best possible optimisation. It is one of the simplest methods, and easy to apply to any NP-hard problem. The experimental, and comparison with other recently published algorithms shows that the proposed algorithm is feasible, and is an effective approach for long-term production scheduling problems. The results indicated that a better solution is obtained by the proposed method, compared to other methods in terms of cumulative net present value, and average ore grade. Additionally, the CPU time via the proposed model is roughly 2.52% higher than the other method.

"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper-gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. Initially, the ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. Subsequently, the feed source shifted primarily to freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better flotation kinetics, but with the downside of lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the rougher circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory flotation test work that were discussed at length in a previous paper1. Salient among the recommendations adopted as a result of previous work were increased circuit capacity and a modified configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidization stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and a below-specification final concentrate product. This was due primarily to higher mass pulls from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams, and which necessitated an enlarged cleaning capability. The extra cleaning capacity came on stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. IntroductionThe Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining plc, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (ZCCM). The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005."

Scheduling the extraction and rates of production for an underground mining operation is a common task carried out during the life of a mine, from the initial feasibility study through to the final production phase. The scheduling process can be complex when several requirements have to be satisfied, for example, match mill capacity and maximize net present value while constrained by mining sequence and availability of resources. Many mines have computer programs relevant to their operation but because they are site-specific they need considerable reprogramming to be adapted to other operations. Other methods currently in use also suffer drawbacks: manual spreadsheets are laborious, computerized spreadsheets cannot handle sufficient constraints, and operations research techniques require a complex mathematical model to be set up. The use of network analysis techniques has been proposed previously but the unavailability, until recently, of easily used computer programs has not allowed this approach to be developed. There are now many programs which can be used; however, the particular program which has been adapted to mine scheduling is Metier's 'Artemis-PC' running on IBM-XT or compatible machine. The use of network analysis offers many advantages, including the use of a logical mining sequence; activities can be as detailed as required; related activities can be readily incorporated, and costs can be easily extracted. A heuristic approach is necessary to optimize the schedule, but the ease and speed of program execution enables this to be readily achieved, while leaving the mining engineer in full control. The paper discusses the problems encountered in mine scheduling and current solutions. It then details the use of network analysis techniques and the application of the Artemis-PC program to solve mine scheduling problems.

Turbulence in mechanical flotation cells, achieved via an impeller, plays a key role in keeping particles in suspension, dispersing air bubbles, and promoting particle-bubble collision. However, studying the hydrodynamics of a flotation cell is not a simple task, due to the complex nature of flotation systems which are opaque, turbulent, multiphase and polydisperse in terms of particle and bubble sizes. In this paper we study the impact of impeller design modifications on the hydrodynamics of a continuously overflowing bench-scale flotation tank. To this end, two different impeller designs, with and without a stator, were assessed using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). This allowed the authors to determine, for the first time, the effect of an impeller design on the behaviour of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic particle tracers. It was experimentally observed that the use of a stator modifies the hydrodynamics within the flotation cell, distorting the lower mixing loop that is characteristic of axial impellers. The role of the stator in dissipating turbulence results in reduced particle velocities outside of the impeller-stator region. These results have important implications for flotation cell design and are discussed in the context of the impact that different designs have on particle movement, flotation hydrodynamics and, ultimately, flotation performance. The dynamic behaviour of plant circuits and the available instrumentation determine the control strategies that are appropriate for the duty of the mineral separation plant. Although steady state modelling is appropriate to provide the main requirements of grade and throughput capability of a plant, it is the dynamic characteristics that determine the tolerance of the plant to disturbances and also its controller ability. This paper explores these issues with respect to the additional use of dynamic modelling to achieve these objectives.

"A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

A large new underground platinum mining project required that all different mining options were investigated during an option study before proceeding to the prefeasibility stage of the project. The capital project team identified 21 different options requiring investigation. These options considered 10 different access methods and 4 different mining methods. Each of the 21 options required a mine design, a valid production schedule, and the associated economics in order to facilitate a comparison on project Net Present Value (NPV) and other metrics. The project sponsors required this work to be completed in 3 months and therefore the project team decided to adopt an object-oriented modelling approach as implemented by Cyest Corporation. This would allow all 21 options to be valuated within the tight time frame due to the generation and re-use of templates. Standard objects were configured into templates containing the mine layout, design, and scheduling logic. These templates could then be assembled into a model to represent the option being investigated. The adoption of rules-based design and production scheduling then allowed for the rapid generation of a valid production schedule for each option with different iterations of varying production ramp-up and mining efficiency assumptions. The activity-based operating costs, labour, and capital were also linked to the standard templates such as a half level or barrel, which were then replicated to represent the overall mine structure for each option under consideration. Using this approach for each option, a full production schedule was produced per mining activity, the operating costs were calculated using activity-based costing, an infrastructure capital expenditure estimate was determined, the development capital requirements costed, and an overall NPV determined. This options study was completed in an unprecedented 10 weeks and a recommendation was put through to the Business to take three of the options to the next study phase.
