The application of refrigeration on deep South African gold mines is mostly achieved through the medium of chilled water which is produced in central installations either on surface or underground. The amount of refrigeration has been increasing rapidly over recent years, and the total installed capacity on all gold mines now exceeds 1000 MW(R), with annual running costs exceeding R100 million for electricity alone. Hence, there are strong incentives to design such installations for optimal cost-effectiveness. The duty required of these installations varies considerably, owing to daily and seasonal climatic changes and the varying nature of the water demand. It has long been recognized that a computer program to predict installation performance as a whole under any given conditions would be highly desirable. An interactive computer program, CHILLER, is described which enables the user to build an installation, consisting of any configuration of cooling towers, water storage reservoirs and packaged water chilling machines. Externally-dictated conditions such as the weather and chilled water demand must be specified, and all quantities under control of the installation, including internal water flow rates and compressor capacity regulators, must be set. The time-varying performance of the installation can then be simulated. Examples are given of the application of the program in the design of a new installation, and in evaluating the effect of any modifications to existing installations.

The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn't be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

China?s engagement with the African continent has increased impressively in the past decade. Even though China is not the African continent?s largest stakeholder, the rapidly increasing engagement is evident in the huge number of Chinese migrants that have come to Africa in the wake of unprecedented trade and investment levels, as well as in increasing diplomatic and political interactions, which has taken most other commercial partners by surprise. All but four countries in Africa have adopted the ?One China?1 policy stance; and in so doing opened the door for new or strengthened commercial dealings with China, including increasing investments into Africa?s extractive industries. This has been particularly evident since the turn of the century, with a clear shift in China?s policy towards Africa elevating the continent in China?s foreign policy objectives. As such, Africa has become a strategic focus2 for Chinese outward bound and internationalizing companies, especially in the extractive industries. This planned shift in focus is based largely on geo-strategic and commercial needs and interests, rather than previous ideological ones.3

Trackless mining in low profile (LP) and extra low profile (XLP) platinum stopes has forced equipment designers to re-evaluate their equipment profiles to match the undulating reef. Low profile equipment designed to work in conditions with smooth and flat floors will simply not function with undulating floors and roofs and will become wedged between the floor and roof, beached on undulations due to lack of ground clearance, or suffer excessive mechanical damage. Tyres, too, need special evaluation, as conventional tyres for trackless mining do not work in an extra low profile environment.

"To be able to responsibly develop a multiphysics model of the steel belt sintering (SBS) process used to sinter chromite fines, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the process. This understanding was gained through a site visit, observation of the process in operation, and interaction with the operators. Material characterization will also reveal much about the process that is not yet fully understood. A well-defined and representative mass and energy balance will also give valuable insight into the process. The plan for the multiphysics model aims to combine a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with a discrete element method (DEM) model.To obtain a more accurate mass and energy balance representation of the SBS process, it was decided to develop a dynamic distributed parameter model of the mass and energy balance. This model will be used to gain better understanding of the SBS process so that a more complicated multiphysics model can be developed later. The reason for this is because the SBS process is very dynamic, with a large temperature distribution throughout the length of the process. In its current state, the mass and energy balance model is capable of handling solid and gas material packages and exchanging heat between these packages where they are mixed, and is able to model the heating of the gas by burning CO gas. The next step in the development of the model will involve enabling it to handle evaporatoin of liquid water, burning of solid carbon in the pellets, reduction of iron oxide in the pellets with the CO gas formed from carbon combustion, and then oxidation of the reduced iron in the oxygen-rich cooling zones."

Hydraulic fracturing technology is presented as a solution to improve permeability and thus solve the extraction problem of coal seam gas in low-permeability gas-bearing coal seams. Given an existing group of original cracks, the propagation of main hydraulic cracks and hydraulic wing cracks was simulated using realistic failure process analysis software. The process represents the structural transformation of hydraulic fracturing and permeability improvements caused by it. In addition, a field test for improving the permeability of gassy coal seams by hydraulic fracturing was also conducted. The propagation of the main cracks and wing cracks by hydraulic fracturing forms a network of original joint cracks, hydraulic wing cracks, and main hydraulic cracks, which improve the permeability of the coal seam. High-pressure water in the drill hole and in the main hydraulic cracks permeates the two flanks of the hole, forming the permeating water pressure. With an increase in drill water pressure and an extension of the main hydraulic cracks, the permeating water pressure on both sides of the main hydraulic cracks in the coal mass also increases. Hydraulic cracks tend to form connections through rock bridges. The extension of hydraulic wing cracks through connections in the rock bridges between the cracks transforms the rock mass to a fractured structure and improves its permeability. Hydraulic fracturing technology for improving permeability in underground conditions can increase the amount of gas drainage by a factor of 15. A stress relief area develops at a radial distance of 10-2.0 m from the hydraulic fracturing drill hole, while an area of rising stresses, called the pressurized area, develops a further 15 m away from the pressurized hole. Practice has proved the existence of the stress transfer phenomenon and the high stress area after fracturing. This kind of hydraulic fracturing technology is more effective in holes drilled from underground than in surface drill holes, with respect to costs and controllability, and is therefore the major trend in gas drainage development in coal mines.

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. Anglo Platinum?s Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province in South Africa. A single 168 MVA six-in-line rectangular furnace smelts dry concentrates containing platinum group metals (PGMs). Furnace energy consumption since commissioning is presented, showing that energy efficiency improves as capacity utilization increases. An energy balance for the furnace is outlined, indicating the measured or calculated energy losses from the hearth and side-wall cooling, the copper coolers, the upper furnace walls and roof, and the energy losses in off-gas, matte, and slag. From the energy balance, the potential to improve energy efficiency by controlling the slag temperature, the slag level, and the off-gas volume is derived. Furthermore, the impact on the energy balance of different concentrate types is discussed, as well as the potential impact of replacing all upper waffle coolers by plate cooler panels.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI, However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI, In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

A physical modelling approach was adopted to simulate the process of cave mining propagation at various horizontal to vertical stress state ratios, and image data was captured and used to characterize the resulting failure mechanisms. Image processing was integrated into the study to determine minor principal strains in models to identify where critical extensional strains had been exceeded relative to crack propagation. The study exhibited a scale factor magnitude of 119 using a calculated critical extensional strain value of 0.014% for the modelling material used. It was perceived that cave propagation occurred through successive parallel extensional ‘fracture bands’ in all cases, as noticed in models of prior studies, deviating from that described by the Duplancic model. Cracks tended to bisect regions of minor principal strain equal to the critical extensional strain, which suggests ‘fracture banding’ is an acceptable failure mode for brittle, rock-like materials. Moreover, it was found that models with lower horizontal to vertical stress ratios (K ratios) showed a greater degree of vertical development of the caving mechanism (at similar vertical stresses), while the vertical extent of the cave was suppressed in models with higher K ratios. Models subjected to larger vertical stresses experienced slower cave formation in latter time-steps. These models exhibited larger two-dimensional caved perimeters and areas, respectively.

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. In this study the applicability of a batch press to predict the energy consumption and particle size distributions for medium-pressure roller presses was investigated. The relationships between energy consumption, feed size and product size are discussed with reference to Hukki?s interpretation of Bond?s and Rittinger?s laws, as well as the particle size parameter used. It was found that the comminution laws have limited utility for the characterization of the performance of the medium-pressure roller crushers or the batch press used, and also depend on the particle size distribution indicator used. It was also found that the batch press is not a suitable simulator for medium-pressure roller mills as it was notable to predict the energy requirements, or to predict the size distributions that would be obtained for the ores evaluated.

Tapping a blast furnace is necessary not only to deliver the product, but is also essential for the safety of the furnace and workers in the cast-house. This paper will highlight the practices at ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces in the Vanderbijlpark Works, with specific focus on tap-hole design and monitoring as well as casting practice. Extension of the tap-hole life and hearth campaign will be illustrated with reference to the methods of maintenance of the tap-holes, troughs, runners, and cast-house equipment. The importance of proper cooling, good thermocouple installation, and temperature monitoring will be explained.

The corrosion properties of iron-based composite materials containing graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement were investigated. The effects of silicon carbide reinforcement were investigated by adding 0.5% graphite and 1%, 2%, and 4% SiC. A powder metallurgy method was used to produce the composite samples. Iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were blended for one hour with a threeaxis mixer and then unidirectionally pressed under a pressure of 750 MPa. After pressing, the composite materials were sintered at 1100°C for one hour. The corrosion properties and microstructure, density, and hardness properties of the composite materials that can affect the corrosion properties were also investigated. It was determined that the pore ratio and hardness of the composite material increased, and corrosion resistance decreased, with increasing silicon carbide content.

The Pooncarie Project is located in the Murray Basin region of Australia. This region is a potential new mineral sands province. Due to the geological environment and the lithology of the deposit, these deposits have some technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to their successful development. Within the Pooncarie Project the Ginkgo deposit will be developed first. The technical challenges it presents include its geographical isolation, the requirement to remove substantial quantities of overburden as well as the processing issues raised by the highly weathered nature of the ilmenite family of minerals. Ore characterization bench scale testwork and bulk sample pilot plant programmes have been carried out and the data obtained used to design flowsheets for both the wet plant and mineral separation plant circuits with the flexibility to enable these plants to handle the variable heavy mineral assemblage. In addition to the solving of the processing challenges, technical issues such as removal of overburden for the minimum unit cost, the use of hyper saline water in the dredge pond and the provision of infrastructure, have had to be addressed. None the less, the orebodies making up the Pooncarie Project have many positive features including low slimes content, good rutile and zircon grades and the ability to recover most of the ilmenite family of minerals into acceptable TiO2pigment feedstocks. The development of the project is set to proceed with the establishment of mining operations on the Ginkgo orebody feeding a mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. The initial shipment of products is expected to occur in early 2005.

This paper presents the results of research on the development and application of a custom-made truck cycle and delay automated data collection system (TCD-ADCS) in a surface coal mining. Truck cycle and delay field data are locally stored in trucks and then synchronized and replicated through a wireless network into a centralized server containing an already-developed integrated production management system (IPMS). The system relies on motion sensing and distance travelled in order to automatically define the cycle starting/ending points, cycle time, position, and delay time. Connectivity and communication between loading equipment and trucks are also established. Communication between the equipment operators and TCD-ADCS system is via a user-friendly graphic interface. The hardware used for the development of this system consists of a rugged touch-screen personal computer, 2.4 GHz radio transmitter antenna, and a commercial GPS receiver. In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.

In the chlorination process for TiO2 pigment production, blends of titania feedstocks such as ilmenite, synthetic rutile (SR), natural rutile, upgraded slag, and chloride-grade slag are reacted with coke and chlorine at a temperature of around 1000°C to form TiCl4, which is the main product, and other waste metal chlorides. TiCl4 is the main feed material for the TiO2 pigment-making process. Feeding different titania materials to the chlorinator affects the amounts of coke and chlorine required for the process, the amount of waste generated, waste disposal costs, the amount of TiCl4 produced, and bed build-up rates. These factors influence the value of the feedstock. Generally, a higher TiO2 feedstock is more valued since less waste is generated and less reagents are consumed. To quantify the impact of different feedstocks on the chlorinator, a techno-economic model was developed to describe the chlorination process and estimate process variables at steady state. This paper describes the development of the model and studies in which the model has been used to quantify the effects of using different feedstocks.

The increased adoption of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may improve the productivity and costeffectiveness of remote sensing in the mining industry. This review’s objective is to enable stakeholders to identify possible application adoption, improvement, and innovation opportunities. The review merges a building block strategy and practical screening criteria to identify possible avenues of research to answer the review questions. After the screening process, 72 documents were included in the review. Papers were classified into four categories: exploration, development, exploitation, and reclamation. Fifteen applications were identified, the majority of which were in the exploration phase. The most often researched applications were topographic surveys, reclamation monitoring, and slope management. From the two UAV types identified, multi-rotor vehicles were the most favoured for all applications. From the eight remote sensing techniques identified, photogrammetry was the one most often used. Other techniques were limited because of complexity, cost, or the incompatibility of sensors and UAVs. The review was limited to published papers in academic journals. Future studies could aim to include empirical data on the latest UAV applications used in the mining industry.

Cyanide is a key contributor to the efficiency of gold extraction. Public perceptions of cyanide are emotive and following some publicised incidents involving cyanide, the gold mining industry established a voluntary cyanide code for the manufacture, transport and use of cyanide in the production of gold. The paper describes the development of the code, its content and the third party auditing of the code as a means of establishing and maintaining benchmark standards. In adhering to the cyanide code requirements, there are overlaps with other management systems such as ISO 14001 and OHASA 18001 and the paper seeks to show how existing mine systems can readily accommodate cyanide code compliance and that operating and auditing the cyanide code can assist in the integration of mine heath, safety and environmental management systems.
