Contributions to discussion V. E. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource in which apatite is the main valuable mineral. Flotation is the most commonly used method to separate apatite from middle-low grade phosphate rock. Selective flotation separation is based on the difference of physical and chemical properties of minerals occurring at the three interfaces of mineral/bubble/water. Surface and interface chemistry of mineral have been playing an important role in interpreting and governing its flotation phenomenon. In-situ, visualized and high-precision analytical techniques, such as Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Atomic Force Microscopy and Molecular Simulation, have been applied to explore and uncover microscopic nature of apatite flotation. Consequently, a great progress at molecular or atomic level on surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation has achieved in the past decades. In this paper, the research progress of surface and interface chemistry of apatite flotation such as surface wettability, surface-charging characteristics, surface dissolution behavior, adsorption mechanisms of fatty acid collector and depressor on apatite surface were systematically reviewed. This review will be helpful for the development of more selective reagents and efficient technologies for apatite flotation. "In selecting a suitable method to sink a vertical shaft for underground access, a number of constraints influence the ultimate decision of where and how to develop the shaft, not least among these being safety, development and construction time, and cost. Two additional considerations stand out: these being geotechnical conditions and technology, the latter taking into account existing underground access. Assuming a project for which an existing underground excavation is available, it is tempting to build a shaft sinking project from the outset based on the raiseboring method, which has the potential to be the safest, fastest, and least expensive method provided that geotechnical conditions permit.And therein lies the rub: regardless of project time or cost constraints, when it comes to raiseboring a long (say, greater than 500 m), large diameter (greater than 4.5 m) shaft, the rock mass conditions ultimately dictate what method of shaft sinking will be feasible. Over the course of several studies for a particular project, several geotechnical analyses were carried out specifically for the purpose of developing a shaft by raiseboring. Risk analysis and experience showed that where the rock mass conditions indicated an unacceptably high risk potential, an alternative method needed to be considered, even if this meant increasing both the time and financial requirements.In this paper we present an overview of geotechnical investigation practices for shaft sinking. Decisionmaking thresholds for raiseboring or other methods of shaft sinking are discussed, including probabilities of failure, empirical rock mass classification, basic wedge failure, and back-analysis of a failed case. The design of appropriate support, and analysis of relative safety benefits for various shaft sinking methods, falls outside the scope of this work, and will be presented in a separate paper.IntroductionThe potential for rock mass failure during shaft development and construction affects whether a project is completed safely, on time and on budget. During the course of several studies to establish ventilation shafts for an underground expansion project, geotechnical analyses of rock mass stability and failure potential were carried out. The investigations were guided by the method of McCracken and Stacey (1989) together with insights from Peck and associates (Peck, 2000; Peck and Lee, 2007, 2008; Peck, Coombes, and Lee, 2011)."

In a gold CIP/CIL circuit, adding new circuit water to a final tails thickener and then directing the thickener overflow to the head of the circuit significantly reduces the cyanide concentration at the TSF discharge spigot. The new water is used to dilute the final tails. The dilution and recycle of the tails in this manner may have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption, in some cases to the point where the reagent savings justify the expenditure and Cyanide Code compliance is achieved at no extra cost. Potential circuit configurations and water recycles can be modelled by splicing a flowsheeting and thermodynamics package, such that changes to the composition of the water can be reduced to chemical speciation with a Gibbs free energy minimisation enabling a complete understanding of the circuit water chemistry.

In this work we have reviewed methods to classify corrosivity of ground waters. Weight loss and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) corrosion tests have been done for rebar and steel strand. No clear indication of SCC was found. The application of tensile stress to 85 % of yield strength increased general corrosion rate significantly in very corrosive waters. The effect of corrosion protection on the axial behavior of steel strands was determined by double pipe axial tests with different embedment lengths. The results showed a significant difference on behavior between epoxy-coated steel strands, galvanized steel strands and plain steel strand. Dans la présente étude, nous avons passé en revue des méthodes permettant de classifier la corrosivité des eaux souterraines. Des tests portant sur les pertes de poids et sur la corrosion FCC (la fissuration par corrosion sous contrainte) ont été effectués pour les barres d’armature et les torons. Aucune indication nette de FCC n’a été constatée. L’application d’une contrainte de traction allant jusqu’à 85 % de la limite d’élasticité a accru de manière significative la vitesse générale de corrosion dans les eaux très corrosives. L’effet de la protection contre la corrosion sur le comportement axial des torons en acier a été déterminé au moyen de tests axiaux à double tube avec des longueurs d’enrobage différentes. Les résultats ont mis en évidence une différence significative quant au comportement entre les torons en acier à revêtement époxy, les torons en acier galvanisés et les torons en acier standard. In dieser Arbeit haben wir Methoden geprüft, die korrosive Wirkung des Grundwassers einstufen. Gewichtsverlust- und SCC-Korrosionstests wurden für Stahlstäbe und Drahtlitzen durchgeführt. Es wurden keine sicheren Hinweise auf Spannungsrisskorrosionsbrüche gefunden. Bei Anwendung einer Dehnbelastung von 85 % der Streckspannung bzw.Ergebnisstärke stieg die allgemeine Korrosionsrate in stark korrosivem Wasser deutlich an. Die Wirkung des Korrosionschutzes bei axialem Verhalten von Stahldrahtlitzen wurde durch axiale Tests an Doppelleitungen unterschiedlicher Versenkungslänge determiniert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten im direkten Vergleich von epoxidbeschichteten, galvanisierten und normalen Stahldrahtlitzen beachtliche Unterschiede im Verhalten auf.

"Both Polish and European hard coal mining nowadays faces the need of deepening shafts (significantly in some cases) or extending mining hoists, due to the exploitation of deeper coal deposits.In order to protect the crew working within a shaft, rope safety platforms (artificial shaft bottoms) are employed. Old solutions, based on rigid steel constructions with the external damping layers made of e.g. slag and up to several tens of metres long, are intended to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t mass falling a distance of 700 m. However, current requirements often assume a drop of 20 t to a depth of 1000 m or even more.More modern safety platform structures, made of one or more support rings with steel ropes stretched on them (rope platforms), are more compact (up to 3 m high) and lighter than traditional solutions. Multi-ring rope platforms with additional damping layers filling the empty spaces between the ropes are able to absorb sufficient energy to meet the current requirements.Single- and double-ring platforms have been employed in Poland to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t dropping to a depth of 900 m. They have been developed (and some have already been implemented) by SADEX Ltd. and are protected by various patents and patent applications.This paper presents a design for a triple-ring platform structure with six rope nets. FEM analysis was used to model the performance of the platform. According to the simulation, a 20 t mass falling from 1000 m (>100 m/s) will destroy all the nets, breaking most of the ropes and deforming the support steel boards placed on the nets, but will ultimately be stopped by the platform, as its kinetic energy falls to zero."

"Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

The size distribution and morphology of gold particles in Witwatersrand reefs and their crushed products by D. K. HALLBAUER, Dr. rer. nat., Dipl. Min. (Visitor) and N. C. JOUGHIN, B.Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Rand) (Member) Undistorted gold particles were obtained from samples of a variety of Witwatersrand reefs by dissolution of the quartz in hydrofluoric acid. The size distribution of the gold particles and their shapes and association with thucholite and pyrite are discussed. Gold particles with a natural flat, plate-like appearance occur in varying proportion in all reefs. The effect of a number of different comminution processes on the gold particles was investigated, and the shape of gold particles in mill pulp from a number of mines was examined.

Submerged arc furnaces and electric smelters are applied in numerous metal and slag production lines. Particularly in ferroalloy and non-ferrous metal production, like silicon metal, platinum group metals, calcium carbide, and copper, the units are an essential part of the production technology. Most of these electric furnaces are considered to be highly energy-intensive units. The high level of required electrical power is defined by the process. SMS developed several measures to reduce the overall electrical energy consumption of these metal production lines. In particular, the following measures contributes to a lower energy consumption: improved electrical efficiency with intelligent design and application of components, minimizing the heat losses from the furnaces with a balanced cooling/refractory systems, minimization of process steps (such as elimination of agglomeration), recovery of energy, process optimization (resulting in higher metal yield) and the achievement of higher recovery rates, enlarging furnace capacity to reduce heat losses, and maximizing the power-on time. This paper gives an overview of the above-mentioned solutions.

GENERAL Invitation to attend O.F.S. Branch Meeting: Members of the Witbank/Middelburg Branch were invited to attend a branch meeting of the O.F.S. Branch on the 15th November. The subject of the meeting would be a talk on the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam Project and up to 25 members could be accommodated on the nights of the 14th and 15th November by kind invitation of members of the O.F.S. Branch. A questionnaire would be issued at a later date, to obtain the names of those interested in attending the meeting. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Chairman called upon Mr G. H. J. Kitson to present his joint paper, entitled: 'Photoelectric readings; their significance for dust control on collieries.' G. H. J. Kitson (Member) and Y. J. F. Haven (Visitor). After Mr Kitson had presented his paper, both he and Mr Haven answered questions from the floor. The Chairman then thanked Mr G. H. J. Kitson for presenting the paper, and the meeting closed at 6.15 p.m.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. NiskanenThe rock mechanics papers, because of their complementary nature, were presented in succession and discussion on both followed directly. The paper on automated ventilation control at a mine in Finland was then presented and the session was closed with several contributions to this paper.By and large the papers and discussions which followed in this session showed how a classic tie-up had developed between the use of computing techniques in important fields of mining, and their practical application. In fact, the dis-cussion following the rock mechanics papers showed clearly that without the aid of high-speed digital computers the rate of progress in applied research in deep-level hard-rock mines, would have been severely hindered. Furthermore, it became apparent from the comments made by several contributors that the rock mechanics techniques and computer progress described in Deist's and Cook's papers could be used to provide useful data in the solving of rock mechanics and design problems on mines other than flat dipping deep tabular deposits.The paper by Niskanen, which described an automated ventilation control system at a mine in Finland, showed how effective computers could be in areas where the reversal of mine ventilation occurs due to severe seasonal temperature ranges. Although the system described in the paper could not be introduced easily in complex underground mines, several contributors gave examples of similar ventilation problems that could be solved mechanically,In introducing his paper, Dr Deist said that the purpose of the paper was to give a brief account of some of the programs designed by himself and his co-authors to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems,The first system presented by Dr Deist was known as MINSIM in the South African mining circles. This system was designed specifically to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems in the South African gold mining industry. It was particularly designed to handle tabular deposits at great depth but it has been used satisfactorily on a number of occasions to obtain at least approximate solutions in other mining situations. Dr Deist said that the principles embodied in the programs were easily extended and, in fact, there was a project in progress at that time which was aimed to do this. He said that the principles could easily be extended to shallow-depth mining at steep or very steep inclinations."

"Intensive mining of shallow coal seams tends to result in severe subsidence of the ground surface. Surface subsidence is a complex dynamic spatiotemporal process that constantly changes as mining advances. With Liangshuijing coal mine as a case study, 3DEC numerical software was used to simulate the development of the moving subsidence field from open-off cut to full subsidence on the working face. The results demonstrate that the formation of a subsidence field is directly related to the coal seam depth H and the extent of the mine workings. Taking the advance distance of the working face as the unit of scale, the process of surface subsidence can be divided into four stages: micro-change (H/ p), the development of surface subsidence (2H/ p), the formation of a movement subsidence field (3H/ p), and dynamic balance (4H/ p). The changing movement of a subsidence field can be fully described by the characteristics of surface subsidence value, curve slope, and the inflection position. The results provide important technical support for predicting surface subsidence and the temporal–spatial evolution features of mining subsidence. IntroductionChina’s coal output was about 3.52 Gt in 2017 (China National Coal Association, 2018), making it the largest coal producer in the world, accounting for almost half of total world coal production. Coal production and distribution play a vital role in the energy industry of China. However, entire overlying strata, from coal seam to surface, are disturbed as a result of long-term, high-intensity and large-scale mining, causing surface subsidence. This results in groundwater loss, surface desertification, vegetation loss, and mud-rock flows. These issues have become topics of common concern throughout society. According to related research results (Liu 2008), the area of surface subsidence caused by coal mining in China has reached about 600 000 ha, some 0.2 ha (and up to 0.42 ha) of surface subsidence for every 10 000 t of coal produced. Surface subsidence disasters not only damage buildings, water conservancy, transportation infrastructure, and farmland, but also cause adverse effects on individual and community lifestyles, environmental hygiene, and economic development. Deterioration of the ecological environment in mining areas has a long history and is very harmful (Lu, 2015)."

Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). "Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

Excessive build-up of methane and water pressures was identified as the leading cause of some Q/the roof falls in a coal mine in the eastern Transvaal. In order to characterize the migration of the methane and water into and around the mined coal seam, a laboratory investigation of the permeability of the roof strata was undertaken. The aim of the investigation was to correlate changes in the fades with changes in permeability to enable the prediction of possible zones of pressure buildup. The tests were carried out on samples from borehole core that had been obtained from the roof strata as part of the mine exploration programme. Permeability measurements were then conducted under atmospheric and triaxial-stress conditions. For the tests under atmospheric conditions, a modified Ohle cell was used and, for the tests under triaxial-stress conditions, a modified Hoek cell was used. The liquid equivalent permeability?s of the different samples were obtained by use of ASTM D4525- 85, and these were then used as a basis for comparison. Facies type, i.e. grain size, was found to have an influence on the permeability but, owing to the variable nature of the sediments, a range of permeability rather than a specific permeability value was associated with each type of Jades. The measured permeability was bound to decrease with an increase in gas pressure. The liquid equivalent permeability was bound to increase with an increase in grain size for the coarser-grained Jades, and to decrease with an increase in grain size for the finer-grained types. The application of an external stress regime to the sample was bound to reduce the permeability, but the amount of the reduction depended on the type of stress. The permeability was also found to depend on the recent stress history of the sample. The authors conclude that the methods described are useful for the correlation of facies type with permeability, but that the results are sensitive to changes in locality.
