Because geostatistics together with block modeling has not been studied in detail before in the rock mechanics, a two-year research program to investigate the practical use of geotechnical modeling was started in Finland in 1999. According to research work results block modeling gives good estimate of overall rock mass quality but it can not identify individual structures like faults and narrow weakness zones. Weakness zones and faults should be mapped from drill cores, surface mapping, geophysical methods etc. and manually generate 3-D structural model. Rock mechanical 3-D modeling can be used for preliminary stope dimensioning and preliminary reinforcement design. Detailed design needs rock quality mapping from drifts during excavation work. La géostatistique associée à la modélisation par blocs n'ayant pas été étudiée en détail jusqu'à présent dans la mécanique des roches, un programme de recherche sur deux ans visant à examiner l'utilisation pratique de la modélisation géotechnique a été lancé en Finlande en 1999. D'après les résultats des travaux de recherche, la modélisation par blocs donne une bonne estimation de la qualité générale de la masse rocheuse mais elle ne permet pas d'identifier les structures individuelles comme les failles et les zones géologiquement dégradées étroites. Ces zones et failles devraient être cartographiées à partir de carottes de sondages, d'une cartographie de surface, de méthodes géophysiques, etc. et générer manuellement un modèle de structure 3D. La modélisation mécanique des roches en 3D peut être utilisée pour un dimensionnement de la chambre et un plan d'armature préliminaires. Un plan détaillé nécessite l'élaboration d'une cartographie de la qualité des roches des galeries lors des travaux d'excavation. Da man früher Geostatik und Block-Modellieren in der Gebirgsmechanik nicht detailliert untersuchte, wurde 1999 in Finnland ein zweijähriges Untersuchungsprogramm in Angriff genommen. Aufgrund der Untersuchungsergebnisse ergibt das Block-Modellieren eine gute Beurteilung der gesamten Gebirgsmassenqualität, kann jedoch einzelne Strukturen wie Verwerfungen und kleine Schwachzonen nicht identifizieren. Schwachzonen und Verwerfungen müssen demnach aus Bohrkernen, oder mit Hilfe von Oberflächenkartierung, geophysischen Verfahren usw. ermittelt und danach ein 3-D-Strukturmodell manuell erstellt werden. Felsmechanisches 3-D-Modellieren ist für die vorbereitende Abbaudimensionierung und für die vorbereitende Bewehrungsplanung verwendbar. Ein detaillierter Entwurf benötigt die Kartierung der Gesteinsqualität aus den Gesteinsstrecken während der Ausbrucharbeiten.

Granular systems, i.e. particles with realistic shapes, are commonly encountered in nature and industry. While the discrete element method (DEM) is a tool for the simulation of granular flow, in most of the DEM simulation particles are assumed to be spherical. It is questionable whether results drawn from a spherical particle could be easily transferred to a non-spherical particle. Thus, obtaining a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics of granular flows is not only of academic interest, but is also highly related to industrial applications. An in-house developed DEM software called KMPCDEM ©, which was coded to handle non-spherical particles, was used to simulate the particle behaviour. In this paper, the effect of particle shape on the dynamics of particles of non-spherical and spherical shape, including algorithms for the determination of the particle orientation, the moment of inertia, shape representation, and computation time was described. The assumption of a spherical shape has been justified by the complexity of simulation and significantly higher computation time if a realistic shape for particles was used. Dynamics differences showed that findings obtained from spherical particle systems could not be readily extrapolated to non-spherical particle systems. Consequently, particle shape is an important, if not even the most important parameter to be considered in DEM simulations, and therefore has to be captured accurately if DEM is to be used as a predictive tool. The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 µm. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

Applied geophysical methods such as the surface seismic method have been applied for many years and in many places, mainly for oil exploration and to a lesser extent for mineral deposits? exploration in sedimentary basins. The seismic method fundamental is based on the variations of acoustic impedance in a layered earth model and such variations at each main geological interface create reflected waves that are processed and imaged in order to output a clear picture of the subsurface structure. The geology of South Africa was historically, and even until recently, considered as unfit for seismic exploration and the mines were always reluctant to spend any portions of their exploration budgets on these techniques. Hard rocks and high P-waves velocities were creating quite a hopeless model for any mine geologist or geophysicist (if any), unsuitable for the proper use of seismic waves to image their subsurface problems. Boreholes were considered the only reliable tool to derive a geological image of the mine structural features and were linked sometimes with surface methods such as aero-magnetism. The obvious flaw of this methodology was the inability to derive a continuous image from a discrete set of measurement points. Surface 3D seismic is the tool that gives a reliable solution from the initial model extracted from the boreholes, as even the aero-magnetism mapping gives a flat image, unable to show any depth correlation from well to well. The first 3D surface seismic surveys were recorded in the early Nineties only for the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, after a series of serious new shaft sinking failures. The wrong geological locations of these shafts resulted in financial loss of several hundred million rands. The era of3D seismic just started in South Africa and till 1997, all seismic done in the country was for gold exploration with geological target depths close to the oil exploration average depth of investigation. A very important breakthrough was reached when the depth accuracy of the seismic image was tested in real scale as the stopes were surveyed. An error of amplitude of 20 m was usual when true depth was compared with the seismic image predicted depth and shape. This accuracy, completely unknown in oil exploration, started to gain supporters of seismic methods in the mining community but the cash problems and the concentration/disappearance of gold mines in the late Nineties, led to the belief that seismic would be just a very short exploration activity for the mining sector. ort exploration activity for the mining sector. But starting in 1998 with Impala, a tremendous and continuous 3D surface seismic activity occurred in the platinum mining sector. The seismic world got used to new terms such a Merensky and UG2, which have replaced the VCR and black reef. If the primary expectation of platinum surface 3D seismic was to determine and ascertain new shaft locations, as for the gold mines, the quality of seismic data led the mine geologists to require smaller and smaller imaging of geological objects. In addition to the main structural image, small faults, potholes, and shear zone were common expectations of platinum seismic. In a constant velocity environment, what saved the day was the sharp density contrast between the PGM reef and the embedding geology. A good contrast of impedance exists in the whole Bushveld and is sufficient to have enough reflected waves from the PGM main layers to build a high quality seismic image of the subsurface. Recent advances in technology have led in less than 10years to major improvements in the seismic acquisition by using high frequency vibrating seismic sources, but also in processing and interpretation. With these latest improvements, seismic can detect objects of 7.5 m size, either fault throws, flexures, etc. The PGM formations of the Eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex are now accessible for seismic imaging, with cost per square kilometre comparable to the borehole cost of the same surface unit. The economically acceptable seismic surveys can be used for UG2 structural imaging up to a depth of 210 m below surface. Linked with borehole information, 3D seismic today offers a wide range of information for mine development: structural imaging, small fault detection, pothole and shear zone identification. All users of 3D seismic have also used this technique as a tool in the process to qualify their mineral reserves and especially from the category ?inferred? to the category ?measured?. Junior mining companies, in the feasibility stage of their projects, are also quite eager to use seismic as a reserve certification tool, when they present financial statements to future potential investors. The current high demand on platinum, pushes the seismic towards new technologies to be implemented in order to improve the final image. Using surface and borehole seismic together or acquiring seismic surveys with multi-component receivers have been just introduced in South Africa. In less than 10 years, surface seismic by adapting its methods to the special case of the Bushveld, became a mandatory step in mine development and ore resources evaluation. As part of the ?seismic? world we are proud to be a major player the ?surge? of platinum exploration and production in these last years and we will certainly increase our synergy with the mine sectors in the exciting coming years.

Gold mining has been undertaken in South Africa for more than a century. A great proportion of that mining has been from the Witwatersrand Basin; a geological phenomenon that has few parallels throughout the world. It has produced some 47 000 tonnes of gold mainly from underground mines, many of which have been truly world class gold mines. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand Basin have dominated world gold production from their inception and their production has been one of the cornerstones of the development of South Africa as a whole. The mines have some very specific characteristics; their sheer size, the depth of extraction, the nature of the orebodies, and their labour-intensive methods. The mines have also been part of the Mining House concept-a concept unique to South Africa. South African production has declined from a maximum of 1000 tonnes in 1970 to 470 tonnes in 1997. This, as a percentage of western world production, has declined from a maximum of 79 per cent (in 1970) to 21 per cent of world production (in 1997). The nineties&apos; have seen South Africa and its mining companies move onto the world stage and face the harsh realities of having to compete in all spheres of business with their aggressive counterparts principally in Australia, Canada and the USA. The fight is for investment funds with the owners looking for the best returns on their money. In his address Roger Dixon will examine the current situation in the gold mining industry and examine the competitiveness of the mines of the Witwatersrand Basin compared with their peers worldwide. He will also discuss some of the fundamental challenges facing South African gold mines in the areas of legislation, technology, industrial relations, and health and safety. The environment in which the mines operate has changed radically in recent years and their ability to respond to these challenges will determine their future existence.

"To eliminate nozzle clogging during continuous casting of ship plate steel and reduce the calcium addition required, the composition of CaO-MgOAl2O3 inclusions in the liquid phase region must be controlled. Thermodynamic calculations using FactSage show that when the balanced Al content is 0.03 mass %, aCa in the liquid steel is 1–10 ppm, and aMg is 0.01–0.3 ppm; and when the balanced Al content is 0.06 mass %, aCa in the liquid steel is 1–30 ppm, and aMg is 0.05–0.9 ppm. The CaO-Al2O3-CaS inclusions can be controlled in the liquid region below 1600°C at aCa values of 5 ppm, 15 ppm, and 30 ppm, and the balanced Al content should be controlled in the range of 0.001–0.050, 0.005–0.250, and 0.010–0.50 mass %, respectively. Based on theoretical analysis, the refining slag composition should be controlled to 45–53 mass % CaO, 30–37 mass % Al2O3, 6–12 mass % SiO2, and 6–8 mass % MgO. Optimization of the slag system and steel composition can reduce, or even eliminate, the requirement for calcium treatment. The total oxygen content in the slab can be controlled to 15–21 ppm, with typical micro-inclusions ??10 ??m in size, with compositions in the CaO-Al2O3-MgO and CaO-Al2O3-CaS systems. Introduction With the rapid growth in steel output in China and the changes in the macroeconomic environment, competition in the steel industry has become more intense. The technology for economical cleaning of high-grade steel is important for improving product quality and reducing production costs. However, the functions of refining equipment have not been fully taken into consideration, and the combination of refining methods has not been optimized completely. These problems have become a bottleneck, restricting modern steel enterprises from developing an economic clean steel production process. Ship plate steel produced by the converter long process has been selected as the example in this study. The composition of the steel is shown in Table I. This steel is a high-strength low-alloy steel for rolling media and heavy plates, mainly used for ocean-going vessels and other steel structures. The carbon content in the steel is far from the peritectic point, and the crack sensitivity of the slab surface is weak, so impurities and gas content are strictly limited. Therefore, the process route BOF (basic oxygen furnace) – LF (ladle furnace) – CC (continuous casting) needs to be studied."

Since AlphaGo defeated the best human player in the game of Go in 2016 - something thought to be an impossible achievement - machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning have caught the attention of scientists, the media and the general public alike. This recent development in machine learning (let us remember that neural networks have been available for decades now) opens new possibilities in the areas of modelling and process control. However, little has been reported in the minerals processing industry about these new possibilities and opportunities. This paper presents and introduces the topic of reinforcement learning and the different platforms that allow its implementation. The paper shows the consequences of using reinforcement learning for the specific area of process control and optimisation. As an example, the authors present the use of reinforcement learning for the control of a SAG mill closed with a pebble crusher using industrial data from an operation. A comparison with advanced model-based process control is provided, showing the benefits and shortcomings of reinforcement learning as a new control and optimisation technique. "One of the main challenges in the numerical modelling of ground support in underground excavations is to reproduce the performance of the sequential installation of the reinforcement while capturing the rock mass behaviour of an advancing face in 3D. The 3D modelling approaches used to simulate the progressive advance of excavations are mostly continuum and often cannot reproduce the rock mass failure mechanisms. The 3D discrete element method (DEM) can better reproduce structurally controlled rock mass failure mechanisms and can explicitly represent the reinforcement elements. This paper builds on previous work that reproduced the structurally controlled squeezing conditions in an underground hard-rock mine using 3D DEM and the in situ behaviour of reinforcement under pull conditions. It addresses important issues on the way reinforcement is explicitly introduced in discrete element models. A pseudo-3D model is employed to overcome the computational restrictions and time limitations of a 3D modelling approach. The work focuses on the scaling of the material properties of the ground support elements when the thickness of the model is not equal to the out-of-plane spacing of reinforcement. It demonstrates the scaling methodology based on the type of the modelled reinforcement elements used and investigates the significance of this approach. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach with respect to 2D and 3D methods are discussed. The results are compared with field data and previous modelling work done at the mine. An effective representation of ground support in underground excavations should capture the behaviour of both the rock mass and the support elements. When numerical models are used for design purposes, the complexity of the problem requires significant time and expertise (Sweby, Dight, and Potvin, 2016).At a laboratory scale, numerical models have successfully reproduced the results of laboratory tests on rockbolts by explicit modelling of the bolt, the borehole, and the grout. Chen and Li (2015) used a continuum FLAC3D (Itasca Consulting Group Inc., 2012) model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of D-bolts as observed experimentally. Grasselli (2005) used a 3D finite element code to model the behaviour of fully grouted rods and expandable bolts under shear."

Contribution by W.D. Ortlepp? The authors are to be commended for publishing their interesting view of an aspect of deep-level mining technology that is becoming increasingly topical and vitally important. This is the second paper in the journal within four months to deal with the crucial needs of highly stressed tunnel construction, the other being the paper on the design and testing of rockburst support in the February 1994 issue. Both papers re-examine important innovative ideas that are more than a quarter of a century old, but that have not yet been implemented by the industry. It is to be hoped that they will now, taken together, serve as a new starting point for a definitive examination of what constitutes proper tunnel-support design. There can be no question that the need to develop a design approach that will solve the problems of tunnelling at depths of 4000 m or more has now become crucial. Contribution by A.M.J. Mr R.D. Beck attended Felsted School in Essex (England) and the Royal School of Mines, University of London, where he ob¬tained the degree of B.Sc.(Eng.), A.R.S.M. in mineral technology in 1969. His other qualifications include Pr.Eng. (1976), C.Eng (1975), and M.I.M.M. (1975). He joined Gold Fields of South Africa in December 1969, and worked at Doornfontein Gold Mine, Greenside Colliery, West Driefontein Gold Mine, Zwartkloof Fluorspar, Gold Fields Laboratories, Gold Fields Head Office, Libanon Gold Mine, and Kloof Gold Mine before being appointed Plant Superintendent at East Driefontein Gold Mine in January 1973. In June 1976, he was transferred to Head Office as Group Metallurgist, followed, in November 1978, by his secondment to Black Mountain Mineral Development Company as Plant Superintendent, to take on-site responsibilities for staff training, plant commissioning, and start up. On his return to Head Office in July 1980 as Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, he was responsible for Black Mountain and new metallurgical projects. Then, in January 1984, he was appointed General Manager of the Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited. He became a member of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1973.

In the copper electrorefining process, the dissolution of anodes is significantly reduced or even stopped when the passivation phenomenon occurs. The results of this phenomenon are increasing energy consumption, residual formatting, and voltage levels in the cell. In this study, the electrochemical behaviour of blister copper in the presence of sodium persulfate (PDS) was studied. The electrochemical methods of LPR, Tafel, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used. The results showed that the addition of sodium persulfate activates the electrode surface and increases the open circuit potential. In the presence of PDS, the polarisation resistance of the electrode shows an increasing or decreasing tendency, based on the PDS concentration. This tendency is probably due to the formation of surface layers (such as slime layer or copper sulfate) and dissolution of this layer at various concentrations of PDS. The lowest polarisation resistance of 1.8 ohms and the highest corrosion current of 60.6×10-3 and 36.6×10-3 A/cm2 from LPR and Tafel techniques respectively were obtained at the concentration of 40 g/l PDS. Based on the results of potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, the addition of sodium persulfate to the solution reduces the corrosion resistance, therefore the passivation time of the blister copper anode increases. JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This &apos;manumatic&apos; aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise&apos; superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

Biooxidation, and especially the BIOX® process, is a viable, economical and environmentally attractive process to liberate gold hosted in refractory sulfides by oxidatively leaching the sulfides as soluble sulfates. The moderate to high cyanide consumption during the subsequent cyanidiation of the washed biooxidation residue is probably caused by the retention on the solids of labile sulfur species formed during the multi-electron oxidation process of sulfide to sulfate. In this work the nature and mode of transport of the cyanicides in the products from the mesophile BIOX® process, as well as that of the combined mesophile and thermophile bioxidation process, were considered and strategies to reduce cyanide consumption evaluated. It was found that labile sulfur species were the major cyanide consumers in the mesophile biooxidation product, forming predominantly thiocyanate during cyanidation. The transfer of labile sulfur species was only marginally decreased by more intensive and thorough washing of the biooxidation products with warm and hot water, intense stirring and warm caustic leaching. A major reduction in cyanide consumption was however achieved by using a combined mesophile and thermophile biooxidation process. Based on many years experience, the well proven Swiss Tunnel Seismic Prediction System TSP has been substantially augmented for online geological prognosis in underground construction. In its latest version, the Integrated Seismic Imaging System ISIS provides high resolution seismic images of the rock mass around a tunnel face via an array of standard anchor rods. These rods contain 3D-geophones at their tips and can be readily installed during excavation work. A further innovative component of the system is the newly developed high-power repetitive source for application in hard rock: a pneumatic hammer with laser triggering to be mounted on construction machinery. A user-friendly software package permits online data acquisition and processing, 3D-visualization, and a first geological interpretation. Tomographic images of compressional and shear wave velocity fields at fault zones in metamorphic rock of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Central Alps are presented. Das langjährig bewährte Schweizer Tunnelseismische Vorauserkundungssystem TSP wurde inzwischen wesentlich weiterentwickelt. In seiner neuen Version, dem Integrierten Seismischen Imaging System ISIS, ermöglicht es hochauflösende seismische Abbildungen des Gebirges im Vorfeld und Umfeld einer Tunnelauffahrung mit Hilfe einer Anordnung von Felsankern, die an ihren Spitzen 3-Komponenten-Geophone enthalten. Eine weitere Neuerung von ISIS ist die pneumatische Hochleistungs-Impulsquelle mit Laser-Triggering. Eine benutzerfreundliche, interaktive Software ermöglicht die online Datenerfassung und -auswertung, 3D-Visualisierung und eine erste geologische Interpretation. Tomografische Abbildungen von Kompressions- und Scherwellengeschwindigkeitsfeldern an Störungszonen in metamorphem Gestein des Gotthard-Basistunnels werden gezeigt. Basé sur de nombreuses années d’expérience, le système suisse, bien établit, de reconnaissance sismique à l’avancement des tunnels (système TSP), a été sensiblement amélioré pour obtenir une prévision géologique en temps réel durant l’avancement de travaux souterrains. Sa dernière version, le Système Intégré d’Imagerie Sismique (ISIS), fournit des images sismiques haute-résolution du massif rocheux à l’avant d’un tunnel grâce à un réseau de tiges d’ancrage standard. Ces tiges, équipées à leur extrémité de géophones 3 composantes, s’installent très aisément durant les travaux d’excavation habituels. Le élément d’innovation récente concern le nouvelle source très répétitive et de forte puissance pour les applications aux roches dures: un marteau pneumatique déclenché par un système à laser. Un ensemble de programmes informatiques convivial permet l’acquisition et le traitement en temps réel des signaux et produit une vue 3D ainsi qu’une première interprétation géologique. Nous présenterons des images de réflexion d’ondes de compression et de cisaillement ainsi que des inversions tomographiques de zones de faille dans des terrains métamorphiques obtenues à l’occasion du creusement du tunnel de base du Gothard, dans les alpes centrales.

"A mathematical model has been developed for flotation circuit simulation. This model was designed to investigate the effect of varying the circulating loads and to determine whether an improvement in overall efficiency could be gained by a size separation prior to flotation.Model parameters were obtained by regression to plant data. Highly correlated parameters in the model were combined to reduce the number of parameters so that the need for excessive data gathering was eliminated. Mass balance smoothing was used to obtain a consistent data set for regression.The results of the simulation indicate that for the same grade of concentrate, an increase in copper recovery of 0.6 per cent may be Possible by increasing the circulating loads. The results of the simulation also indicated that recleaning of the plus 200-mesh material may be beneficiaL."

VISIT TO THE COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH On 23rd June, 1970, members of the Institute visited the C.S.I.R. in Pretoria. More members had booked for this tour but the current flu epidemic caused cancellations which was unfortunate. The visit was organised with military precision, which prevented detailed discussion of any particular subject, but provided a bird&apos;s eye view of a large number of interesting projects. The visit was packed with interest for all and those requiring further information were invited to contact the relevant divisions afterwards. Or Denkhaus welcomed the delegates and stressed the importance of integrating research efforts with industry&apos;s requirements. An excellent colour and sound film was shown which depicted the work of the Rock Mechanics division. This showed very clearly methods used for preparing rock samples and demonstrated the machines and instruments for the various tests. It made one realise the extent to which this research has been integrated with the actual mining situation. The fullscale experiments underground showed the failure of pillars under applied loads and were very interesting. This is undoubtedly a film which all mining people should see. After the film the rock mechanics laboratories were visited where the actual machines were seen and described. We then visited the metal and strength mechanics sections where the metallurgists were able to see some interesting experiments and tests. We also visited the Aeronautics Research group where a large 1 000 hp wind tunnel was inspected. We were told enough about this to realise something of the complexities involved in the design and operation of a closed circuit tunnel of this type. The tunnel is used for tests on models which are necessary for the design and modification of aircraft. After a very excellent lunch at the C.S.I.R. recreation centre, the delegates attended two lectures-one by Mr. Mandersloot of the Chemical Engineering group, who outlined the varied functions of this group and told us something of their work. Of particular interest was the research into the suitability of various South African manganese ores for dry cell batteries. Work on the thickener settlement studies interested the metallurgists. The second lecture was given by Mr Donaldson of the National Building Research Institute. This Institute has about ten divisions each of which covers a particular aspect of building research. The work of the soil mechanics division was described in detail and illustrated by coloured slides. This was particularly interesting and demonstrated clearly how building failures result from lack of attention to detail of construction where unstable soil conditions exist. Cracks in walls of compound blocks brought the subject home forcibly to the mining delegates. This division has also caried out important work on sinkholes and sUmes dams and produced some positive results. Altogether the visit was most interesting and enjoyable. It was made more worthwhile because the emphasis was on the work being carried out and not on just seeing the laboratories. The Institute is greatly indebted to the C.S.I.R. and its staff for the very excellent arrangements made.
