"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to predict the average gas holdup and the axial gas holdup variation in a 13.5 m high cylindrical column 0.91 m diameter. The column was operating in batch mode. A Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase approach with appropriate interphase momentum exchange terms was applied to simulate the gas-liquid flow inside the column. Turbulence in the continuous phase was modelled using the k-_ realizable turbulence model. The predicted average gas holdup values were in good agreement with experimental data. The axial gas holdup prediction was generally good for the middle and top parts of the column, but was over-predicted for the bottom part of the column. Bubble velocity profiles were observed in which the axial velocity of the air bubbles decreased with height in the column. This may be related to the upward increase in gas holdup in the column. Simulations were also conducted to compare the gas holdup predicted with the universal, the Schiller-Naumann, and the Morsi-Alexander drag models. The gas holdup predictions for the three drag models were not significantly different. IntroductionColumn flotation is an important concentration technology that is used in the mineral processing and coal beneficiation industries. The growing interest in the use of column flotation in mineral processing has been attributed to the simpler flotation circuits and improved metallurgical performance compared to conventional flotation cells (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Flotation columns have also found other applications outside mineral processing, such as de-inking of recycled paper (Finch and Hardie, 1999).In column flotation, a rising swarm of air bubbles generated by means of air spargers is employed to collect the valuable mineral particles and separate them from the gangue minerals in a countercurrent process. Wash water, which is continuously fed at the top of the column, is used to eliminate entrained particles and stabilize the froth. The column volume can be divided into two sections – the collection zone in which the bubbles collect the floatable mineral particles, and the cleaning zone (or froth zone) where product upgrading is enhanced through the removal of unwanted particles entrained in the water mixed with bubbles from the collection zone."

(Min. Eng.) (Member) INTRODUCTION Messrs J. W. Wilson and P. C. Graham are to be congratulated on an excellent paper containing several thought-provoking remarks. The concept of allocating a machine and equipment valued initially at some R300 000 on an experimental basis is courageous, and the results obtained could be of interest to the mining industry as a whole. The Gold Fields of S.A. Group approached this problem differently. In pioneering the start of this work in South African gold mines, they considered that expenditure of this magnitude would be warranted only if the proposition was viable right from the start. To this end, a Robbins R41 was purchased expressly to assist in the duplication of part of the No. 1 shaft system of the Doomfontein Gold Mine. Mr M. J. Koortsl has summed up the initial results of this work and given some preliminary costing, but inflation since that period has made these figures somewhat out of date.

This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C.1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

This paper describes the development of a monitoring architecture that allows for continuous monitoring of the process of mining, the underground environment, the state of the rockmass and its response to mining. The system is based on an open standard and is non-propriety. It allows for dense sensor arrays in the workplace, wire less communication to the closest power line, and TCP/IP communication to a central server. Continuous monitoring and quantification of the appropriate parameters allows a mine to optimise its mine process; to dynamically access the safety and health risk to people and equipment; and to quantify exposure to potential heath hazards such as dust, gas or noise. Current application examples of continuous monitoring include an application to optimise drilling and blasting thought fragmentation monitoring; an application of wireless sensor network-based monitoring in to provide early detection of potential rockfalls; and a trail to continuously assess the gold grade at the shaft through correlation with radioactivity. It is unlikely that a single monitored parameter will provide adequate knowledge of the assessed risk or even an optimisation approach. Multiple parameters are being combined using cognitive science tools such as Bayesian theory and other statistical methods to improve the accuracy and relevance of, for example, risk quantification. The decision maker is not confronted with massive amounts of raw data but rather with a single knowledge statement such a probability of failure, a human physiological strain index or an optimisation index.

The mining and mineral concentration of Cu-Ni-PGM sulfide ores in South Africa occurs in semiarid regions. The scarcity and availability of water resources in these regions has become one of the biggest challenges facing mineral concentrators.S Owing to this challenge, concentrators have to find ways through which they can manage and control their water usage. Recycling and re-use of process water in mineral concentrators has therefore become common practice. This practice is beneficial in that it reduces reliance on municipal water, harnesses compliance to stringent environmental regulations on water usage, and it also offers a better response to the Sustainable Development Goals. This could however be somewhat concerning to the operator as recirculated water often has higher concentrations of ions compared to fresh or potable water. The unintended change in the process water quality may potentially affect critical aspects of flotation such as the stability of the froth. This has led to the need to find those process water ions that have the greatest impact on froth stability. Thus, this paper investigates the effect of various ions common in process water of a typical Cu-Ni-PGM concentrator on froth stability. Bubble size, water recoveries, foam height, and dynamic froth stability in both twophase and three-phase flotation systems are used as proxies for froth stability. Findings of this study are deemed crucial towards the development of a process water management protocol in sulfidic Cu-Ni- PGM ore concentrators. It is common practice in the beneficiation of iron ore ultrafines to apply reverse flotation, and hence float the gangue minerals, leaving behind a high-grade iron ore product. Given the difficulty in floating particles finer than 20 μm, especially those finer than 10 μm, it is necessary to subject the feed to desliming ahead of flotation. There are two problems with this approach. Firstly, given the known inefficiencies of cyclones, desliming needs to be aggressively applied to particle sizes upwards of 45 μm to ensure all the offending ultrafine gangue is removed. Secondly, desliming also removes a significant portion of the valuable iron ore. Thus, a significant portion of the ultrafines, including the iron ore, is lost to the tailings. This paper examines the direct flotation of iron ore fines using the Reflux Flotation Cell. The RFC operates using a concentrated bubbly zone, in the absence of a conventional froth zone, for delivering strong counter current washing through an inverted fluidised bed of bubbles ahead of the product discharge. A system of parallel inclined channels in the lower part of the cell provides enhanced segregation of the bubbles from the tailings, preventing the loss of air bubbles into the tailings. Experiments conducted under semi-batch conditions produced encouraging results with concentrates of ~65% Fe grade in a single flotation stage. Comparatively, up to five successive batch flotation stages were required when using a laboratory scale batch mechanical flotation cell to achieve similar Fe grades. For a given grade, lower Fe recoveries were typically achieved by the RFC. This was attributed to the effective prevention of ultrafine particles succumbing to hydraulic entrainment under a positive bias flux, as well as an increasing feed volume involved in the semi-batch operation using inverted fluidisation water for cleaning. Overall, similar grade-recovery curves were produced, however, significantly higher grades were obtained by the RFC and with fewer separation stages. (Visitor) Twenty-one heat acclimatized subjects were assessed for the degree of acclimatization attained with respect to heart rate, rectal temperature, and sweat rate during a standard four-hour heat-stress test. Thereafter, they were put on light duties in cool environm ents for four weeks, except for four hours of exposure to heat every seventh day. Their state of heat acclimatization was again assessed two days after the final week's exposure. Although heart rates and body temperatures showed significant increases over the initial values, no differences were observed in sweat rates and, in general, the subjects were rated as still adequately acclimatized to heat.

MacGillivray Mr President and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate the authors on presenting a most interesting paper on a very important subject. After several attempts at finding suitable reserves to extend the life of Welgedacht Exploration Company's Utrecht Colliery a block of coal rights was acquired south west of the town of Utrecht. A study of these reserves showed that they would enable a satisfactory return on capital invested to be achieved. It was decided therefore to open up what is now called the Zimbutu section of Welgedacht Exploration Company, to produce 41 000 metric tons of coal per month. The decision to open this section was taken in August, 1968 and due to certain allocation requirements it was necessary to bring it into production by the 1st of January, 1970. Fortunately a fair amount of statistical data had been collected prior to August, 1968 from the old Utrecht Colliery in anticipation of opening a mine and a fairly detailed rechnical report had been prepared. As a result the dead line was only missed by four days. Main features of the Design A feasibility study was carried out on three possible shaft positions and the final position was selected from these three on economic grounds. As the coal seam at the selected shaft position was only 21 metres below the surface it was decided to sink two twin incline shafts to enable rapid establishment of through ventilation and alternative hauling arrangements for quick development. This also allowed the final vertical ventilation shaft to be placed at some distance away to avoid the nuisance of fan noise. Second outlet requirements are also very well met by these twin inclines. Again on the basis of economics and also due to the uncertainty of roof conditions it was decided to use hand loading methods underground. However, to allow for future possible conversion to mechanised loading, should this become economical through rising wages, a conveyor belt was installed in the hauling shaft. This conveyor belt is fed from an endless rope haulage in the east companion by means of tipplers, a bin and a feeder. The main development heading was left clear for the future installation of a conveyor belt which would afford easy conversion to mechanisation.

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. Dr Krige contributed greatly in developing my interest in studying both the theory and practice of geostatistics, always insisting that a correct balance be kept between theory and practice. The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe constitutes the world?s second largest reserve of platinum group elements (PGE) after the Bushveld Complex in neighbouring South Africa. Within the Great Dyke, economic concentrations of PGE are restricted to sulphide disseminations of the Main Sulphide Zone (MSZ), which are currently mined at the Ngezi, Unki, and Mimosa mines. Near-surface oxidized MSZ ores have a large potential. Their total resources are in the range of ca. 160 ? 250 Mt; however, all previous attempts to extract the PGE from this ore type proved uneconomic due to low PGE recoveries (<< 50 per cent) achieved by conventional metallurgical methods. Within the ores of pristine, sulphide-bearing MSZ, the PGE are bimodally distributed. Platinum occurs mainly in the form of discrete platinum group mineral (PGM) grains (mainly bismuthotellurides, sulphides, and arsenides), whereas approximately 80 per cent of the Pd (and some Rh) is hosted in pentlandite. Within the oxidized MSZ ores, the PGE are polymodally distributed. Whereas arsenide- and sulphide-PGMs, making up ca. 25 per cent of the original Pt content of the ore, largely remain stable (relict PGMs), the remaining PGMs are disintegrated. The base metal sulphides are destroyed, partly releasing their base metal and PGE contents, and are replaced by iron oxides or hydroxides. Unspecified amounts of the PGE are redistributed and either form secondary PGMs, are found in chemically and mineralogically ill-defined (Pt/Pd)-oxides or hydroxides, or in iron-hydroxides, Mn?Co-hydroxides, and in secondary silicates. The problematic processing of oxidized MSZ ores is attributable to their complex nature and polymodal distribution of the PGE, prohibiting a significant upgrading of the ores by conventional metallurgical methods. Therefore, only bulk leaching methods are viable for ore treatment, and novel metallurgical methods have to be developed for the processing of these ores. Our ongoing work aims at locating the PGE in their mineralogical form in order to understand the mineralogical balance of the PGE in the ores and thereby facilitate the evaluation of metallurgical options for their recovery. A short overview on options and recent advances regarding the recovery of the PGE from oxidized ores is given.

Various methods for the beneficiation of minus 0,5 mm coal are examined briefly, and tests are described on a cyclone of 150 mm diameter operating with magnetite as the medium. It was found that, for sharp separations, at least 50 per cent of the magnetite should be finer than 1Oµm. At that size, the ash content of the product was about 7 per cent at yields of 59 to 64 per cent, and the loss of medium was reasonable (about I kg per ton of fines treated).

An understanding of wear in systems conveying solids is extremely important from the standpoints of design and economics. The lifetime of any bulk solids-handling system depends on the type of solids present and the operating parameters of the transportation system. The relationship between wear in backfill pipelines on South African gold mines and the transportation system&apos;s operating parameters is well understood. However, the effect of the transported solids on the pipe wear is less well understood, because of an inability to characterize particle sharpness. The sharpness of the particles, together with their size and hardness, is responsible for the aggressivity of particles, or their ability to cause damage and wear. This paper presents a novel method for the characterization of particle sharpness. The results presented rank particles according to the sharpness of their surfaces.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

The importance of the chemical and physical properties of lime has been overlooked for years although the quality of lime plays an important role in the production of steel. With the introduction of the oxygen injection process these properties have been re-evaluated. The CaO, MgO, S, and P2O5 contents of lime are important, but so are the physical properties such as granulation, reactivity with respect to slag formation, and the degree of burning. Soft burnt lime enhances de-phosphorisation and de-sulphurisation, and facilitates the smelting process in general, mainly due to its large specific surface. Special lime, prepared as briquettes from quicklime and fluxes or as pellets from limestone and various fluxes with or without binding agents, clearly accelerates lime dissolution during the slag formation process, lowers the melting point, and enhances de-phosphorisation, de-sulphurisatlon, and de-carburisation even more than soft burnt lime. The introduction of special limes in the oxygen injection process for steel production has opened up new fields for commercial exploitation of slags as well as improved operational techniques.

Flumes are ubiquitous throughout the mining and minerals processing industries as well as being used in the polymer processing and pulp and paper industries. With the increased demand for the transport of highly concentrated slurries in rectangular open channels, there is an impetus for a better understanding of the role of rheology in flow hydraulics. Until recently, design of such channels has been based on either the Chézy or Manning equations used for modelling open channel flow of Newtonian fluids. This has been done for modelling turbulent flow of low concentrated slurries with some success. However, this is not the case for highly concentrated slurries where the flow in the channel is no longer turbulent. Unlike Newtonian fluids, work carried out on flow of pseudo-homogeneous, non-Newtonian fluids in open channels is somewhat limited. Moreover, these results have been published in a variety of sources. This paper attempts to give a critical review of the work carried out on Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow of pseudo-homogeneous non-settling slurries in rectangular open channels. A comparison is also made of the models based on power law, Bingham plastic and Herschel-Bulkley fluids for laminar and turbulent flow in rectangular open channels.

"Flotation columns are normally operated at optimal superficial gas velocities to maintain bubbly flow conditions. However, with increasing superficial gas velocity, loss of bubbly flow may occur with adverse effects on column performance. It is therefore important to identify the maximum superficial gas velocity above which loss of bubbly flow occurs. The maximum superficial gas velocity is usually obtained from a gas holdup versus superficial gas velocity plot in which the linear portion of the graph represents bubbly flow while deviation from the linear relationship indicates a change from the bubbly flow to the churn-turbulent regime. However, this method is difficult to use when the transition from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow is gradual, as happens in the presence of frothers. We present two alternative methods in which the flow regime in the column is distinguished by means of radial gas holdup profiles and gas holdup versus time graphs obtained from CFD simulations. Bubbly flow was characterized by saddle-shaped profiles with three distinct peaks, or saddle-shaped profiles with two near-wall peaks and a central minimum, or flat profiles with intermediate features between saddle and parabolic gas holdup profiles. The transition regime was gradual and characterized by flat to parabolic gas holdup profiles that become steeper with increasing superficial gas velocity. The churn-turbulent flow was distinguished by steep parabolic radial gas holdup profiles. Gas holdup versus time graphs were also used to define flow regimes with a constant gas holdup indicating bubbly flow, while wide gas holdup variations indicate churn-turbulent flow. Churn-turbulent flow, on the other hand, is characterized by a wide variation in bubble sizes with large bubbles rising rapidly and causing liquid circulation.Flotation columns are normally operated in the bubbly flow regime, which is the optimal condition for column flotation (Finch and Dobby, 1990; Yianatos and Finch, 1990; Ityokumbul, 1992). However, it has been generally observed that flotation column performance deteriorates when the superficial gas velocity is increased beyond a certain limit where the flow regime changes from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow (Xu, Finch, and Uribe-Salas, 1991). The identification of this critical or maximum superficial gas velocity is therefore important for optimal operation of flotation columns."

Most flotation plants use a static reagent scheme, i.e., a set combination of collectors, frothers, and modifiers. This scheme is usually developed and refined over time to deliver optimal (not necessarily the highest) performance when the major ore types are fed to the plant. However, when ore types or mineralogy coming to the plant change substantially (and this often happens as different areas of the pit(s) are mined and crushed at the same time), there are upsets in the process, typically leading to lower recoveries. Adapting to this variability is usually done only when performance drastically suffers, and the changes made may be too late and bring additional variability in performance. The premise for SmartFloat™ is that the reagent suite needs to be dynamic, adapting continuously to changes in the ore and operating conditions. Solvay has combined advanced analytics and data science techniques with its expertise in flotation reagent chemistry to systematically and automatically achieve the above, and in real time. Thus, SmartFloat™ is optimizing the reagent suite continuously, removing the additional variability created by belated human interactions resulting in a better and more stable process. In addition, this advanced approach allows for continuous improvement by identifying poor performing ore domains and improving the reagent suite using Solvay’s FM-100 approach to design appropriate solutions.
