Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and the rate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. Successful prediction of the collection efficiency of cyclone separators is a necessary step in cyclone design and verification. Aside from standard empirical relations, CFD modelling is widely adopted to supplement the design of cyclone units in relation to the desired separation performance. Nevertheless, effective adoption of numerical modelling is sometimes prevented by large modelling errors, especially for small size particles which are more subject to turbulence effects than larger particle classes. In the past, this motivated the adoption of more refined turbulence modelling approaches, such as large-eddy simulations. These approaches provide greater insight into time dependent behaviour, while leading to larger computational cost with respect to more standard approaches. In this paper, an effective Eulerian-Lagrangian Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is investigated, which is able to predict the complete separation efficiency curve with satisfactory accuracy, without requiring prohibitively long computational times. An assessment of the proposed approach is carried out against experimental data from large laboratory scale cyclones, in the form of mean and fluctuating velocity profiles from LDA measurements (Hoekstra, 2000), as well as with respect to the experimental separation curve (Zhao, 2005). The final application to a full-scale industrial cyclone unit is then carried out with the aim of tuning the cyclone design to the separation efficiency curve as required by downstream processes. A review of real-time particle size analysers A. L. HINDE,. B.Sc., A.R.C.S., D.I.C., Ph.D. The physical principles of different sizing techniques are critically examined in order to evaluate the suitability of the techniques for real-time particle size assessment. Examples of both successful and unsuccessful attempts at producing an acceptable real-time sizer are described in order to delineate the difficulties involved in making rapid and accurate size measurements. Only two of the examples described have proved to be suitable for on-line particle size monitoring, namely the "MintekjRSM Onstream Slurry Sizer" manufactured by Cartner Group, Ltd., and the "PSM System 100" made by Autometrics Co. Both these commercial systems are capable of assessing particle size with an accuracy comparable with that obtained by routine sieving and weighing. The "PSM System 100" has been used successfully for automatic control of grinding circuits. Economic benefits derived from this system, operating under rigorous plant conditions for several months, have proved that real-time size analysers are of significant value to the mining and metallurgical industry.

Finsch Mine is a Kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface-mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a Modified Blast Hole Open Stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1,2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a Block Cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a mining method to mine the Block 5 ore body started in 1991 and in 2006 Inclined Caving was identified as being a technically feasible method. This report aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 Pre-Feasibility Team as well as discussing the technical challenges encountered during this process.

Main haulage roads play an important role in the performance of underground mines because of the cost of transportation of the extracted ore, equipment, and workers. During mine development, these roads are designed through manual tools or CAD-based software. However, the optimisation of these roads is still a complex problem due to some constraints such as minimum turning radius and maximum gradient. By utilising Dubins path theory, three elevation cases; namely low, medium and high are defined, considering gradient constraint as well as the minimum turning radius in a three-dimensional space. The shortest path between two points can then be found by the three-dimensional Dubins path algorithm with elevation constraint. As a further step, a three-dimensional Dubins path algorithm with elevation constraint for multiple points is also developed for multi-point cases. The effectiveness of these algorithms is tested through case studies in order to determine the optimal path between different points.

In the present study, an innovative comminution technology of high-voltage pulse discharge was proposed for galena to weaken the mechanical property. The results of pre-treatment experiments indicated that the optimal operating conditions of spherical gap spacing 25 mm, pulse numbers 120, and loading voltage 25 kV were obtained, where the relative grindability of pretreated products was improved significantly, although with the prolonging of grinding time, the superiority of high-voltage electric pulses was gradually weakened. The galena ores were subjected to a high-voltage pulse discharge, and then the crack generating along the boundary between galena and gangue was observed under an optical microscope, and the surface burning which appeared in the ores. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the pretreated products were in a state of melting and then condensation, accompanied by some pore formation. Pulsed discharge pre-treatment not only produced more micro-cracks and cracks in the sample but also extended the original crack. In this study, synthetic pure cassiterite and cassiterite doped with Fe were successfully produced by sintering. Their crystal structure and chemical compositions are characterised by optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) as well as scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) based chemical composition analysis. The electrostatic behaviour of synthetic and natural cassiterite was studied by electrophoretic measurements. Their floatability was studied by microflotation with two types of anionic collectors. Results show that the cassiterite floatability with these collectors behaves differently and lead to two opposite results: Natural cassiterite (enriched with Fe) > undoped pure SnO2 by using sulfosuccinamate (Aerosol® 22) Undoped pure SnO2 > Fe3+ doped > natural cassiterite (enriched with Fe) by using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA). Dithiophosphate (DTP) is classically used as a co-collector in sulphide mineral flotation, where xanthate-DTP mixtures have been shown to synergistically improve mineral flotation performance. Notwithstanding the improved recoveries observed, ethyl DTP does not appear to behave as a conventional collector, since it has been shown that it does not adsorb onto certain sulphide mineral surfaces. Recent investigations have nevertheless indicated that when ethyl DTP does not adsorb onto the sulphide mineral surface, the presence of a non-ionic frother can activate a synergistic increase in pulp phase mineral recovery, and bubble-particle attachment probability. A regular solution approach was used to determine the interactions between thiol collectors and non-ionic frothers at the air-water interface. Attractive interactions were observed between longer alkyl chain DTPs and frothers, whereas the activity of xanthates at the air-water interface were too weak to determine if an interaction was occurring. This is the first time that such interactions have been shown for the DTP-frother system and represents an important contribution to our understanding of the role of DTP reagents in the flotation process. We present three technological scenarios for the recovery of valuable components from gangue, stored in the tailings dam at Kremikovtzi metallurgical plant in Bulgaria, into marketable iron-containing pellets. In the first approach the iron concentrate was recovered through a two-stage flotation process, desliming, and magnetic separation. In the second proposed process, the iron concentrate was subjected to four sequential stages of magnetic separation coupled with selective magnetic flocculation. The third route entails the not very common practice of magnetizing roasting, followed by selective magnetic flocculation, desliming, and magnetic separation. The iron concentrate was pelletized in a laboratoryscale pelletizer. Each technology has been assessed with regard to the mass yield of iron concentrate, the iron recovery. and the iron, lead, and zinc content in order to identify the most effective route.

Over the period 1964 to 1969 Conzinc Riotinto of Australia undertook and completed an evaluation of a large low-grade copper orebody on Bougainville Island in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. From the outset it was clear that the geographic, climatic and topographic characteristics of the area would necessitate a heavy capital outlay on production and support facilities. Both the physical problems and the magnitude of the investment amplified the need for a thorough and rigorous evaluation of the various strategies for exploiting the orebody. In view of the number of independent and inter-related variables and the flow of new data, a computer-based evaluation process extended the scope and depth of the analysis considerably. The system used permitted an iterative assessment and re-assessment of the various strategies with the results becoming increasingly refined with time. This process encompassed the modelling of the orebody, the simulation of alternative operating strategies and the determination of the financial profitability of the project,

High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are employed in cement plants worldwide. Although the technology has been mastered in the majority of applications, design-, scale-up- and operationalchallenges still exist today. In addition to modelling throughput, energy requirement and comminution success, the prediction and avoidance of malfunctions is of great importance in current research. The performance of the mill is highly influenced by the roll speed and the fineness of the feed material. Another parameter influencing the composition of mill feed is the circulating load, which is determined by the grinding circuit configuration, the target fineness and the separation efficiency of the classifier. In order to meet this circumstance and simultaneously maintain a reasonable level of material input and testing effort, a complete grinding circuit on a small technical scale was set up in the research centre of Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG. The present study varied the roll speed (0.5-2 m/s) and the proportion of fines in the feed (0-75 %) in order to investigate the influence of both parameters on the finish grinding of a Portland cement with a target fineness of 4000 cm²/g according to Blain. Every smelter has developed particular matte tapping practices and tap-hole repair strategies that are often based on the experience of the smelter personnel. As a result, very little information has been published on these critical topics. This paper aims at providing the information gathered from a survey conducted in the PGM and Ni industries on matte tapping practices and tap-hole maintenance strategies for different PGM-Ni matte smelting operations.

"Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube. Turbulence in stirred tank flotation vessels determines the bulk transport of particles and has an important role in particle-bubble collisions necessary for attachment. Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) produces quantitative measurements of the kinematic motion of different particle classes inside flotation vessels. This paper presents flow profiles of the vessel, residence time distributions, flow profiles through the mesh and macroturbulent kinetic energy distributions as experienced by valuable (hydrophobic) mineral particles in a laboratory scale flotation vessel. The results highlight the impact of the rotor-stator design and a retrofit mesh modification at the upper part of the vessel which improve recovery by decreasing turbulence in the quiescent zone and at the interface. "SynopsisThis study proposes a methodology for evaluating the risk of coal bumps in multiple-seam longwall mining. Both the stress field and the total energy release (TER) during retreat were evaluated in the specified case involving multiple-seam mining using the LaModel program. The results of numerical simulations indicated that both the peak vertical stresses on the panel edges and the peak TERs in the outby longwalls increased significantly as the horizontal offsets were reduced from 60 m to zero. With the comprehensive consideration of the stress field and TERs, a conservative offset of 60 m was ultimately adopted when developing the gateroads of the lower panel in the field. The field measurements indicated that coal bumps were avoided completely by employing the proposed design, and the maximum roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib convergences of the tailgate during retreat were only 360 mm and 576 mm, respectively.IntroductionCoal bumps – sudden, violent bursts of coal – pose a serious threat to the safe excavation of coal. Their occurrence depends on the properties of the surrounding rocks, stress field, and dynamic disturbance. The complexity of the mechanism of coal bumps is further enhanced in multiple-seam mining due to seam interaction. Multiple-seam mining is most frequently found in the coalfields in eastern China, such as Xuzhou, Xinwen, Zaozhuang, and Huainan. In the past, due to issues of availability, economics, and ignorance of the potential risk in multipleseam mining, coal seams in such conditions were mined without proper planning to account for seam interaction. Fortunately, studies published over the past three decades have raised awareness of the problems associated with multiple-seam mining, and indicated that the ground control issues induced by multiple-seam mining can be avoided and/or minimized with proper planning.A number of technical studies pertaining to the design of multiple-seam mines have been published. These studies can be divided into two groups based on their methodologies of design: empirical (Chekan and Listak, 1993; Haycocks and Zhou, 1990, Matetic et al.; 1987a, 1987b) and numerical approaches (Li et al., 2000; Maleki, 2007; Mark, 2007; Peng, 2007; Zipf, 2005). The majority of the extant studies on the interaction mechanisms in multiple-seam mining have focused on the load transfer during operation, resulting in the proposal of the pressure bulb theory (Forrest et al., 1987; Haycocks and Karmis, 1983; Peng, 2008; Peng and Chandra, 1980) and pressure arch theory (Holland, 1973; Oram and Ponder, 1997) to guide multiple-seam mine design. However, neither, of these theories can be used to evaluate the potential for coal bumps."

G. H. HENDERSON INTRODUCTION It is a pleasure to have read Mr Schuman's wide ranging and highly informative paper and also to congratulate him. Before proceeding to give views on the use and preservation of coal in South Africa, it is perhaps apposite to look at the South African scene on the world canvas. Mr Schuman's figures in his Table I are highly revealing. The Table shows expected consumption, export and import demand in the year 1980 by the continents of the world. The Republic of South Africa is shown as one of only four exporting countries at that date, although in the interim, Australia has become an exporter and will continue to grow as an exporter of coal. Huge fields have been proved in recent years. There is reason to think that for some years, coal and its economical uses have been under-estimated. The importation of oil carries a constant question mark and the exciting possibilities expressed in the uses of Dranium a decade ago for power generation, appear to have met with some setback. Present indications are that breederreactors will be delayed until about 1990. The capital cost of such reactors, too, is enormous. By 1980 it has been estimated that 20 per cent of the energy required by the leading ten nations of the world will come from nuclear power, but 80 per cent would then remain for fossil fuels and hydro generation. COAL DEMAND AND USAGE It is of interest to record that coal production in all the countries of Europe has declined markedly in the last 25 years. This is due to competition from oil, gas and nuclear power and also for sociological reasons; but there are signs that efforts will be made to resuscitate, at least in some measure, the mining of coking coals for which there is a strong and growing demand. Possibly all hard coal now mined in Germany has coking properties and that country is self-sufficient in this commodity. Germany might perhaps consider selling coking coal to her neighbours and importing additional coal for power-raising purposes. It has been frequently stated in American publications that the coal reserves of the D.S.A. are sufficient for 1 000 years. What that means, I do not know, but it is at least an indication that America has huge reserves of coal. Domestic and export demand in the U.S.A. in 1968 exceeded production for the first time. In 1969, the United States' output amounted to some 556 million tons, an increase of less than 2 per cent on the previous year. The output achieved fell short of demand, domestic and export, by more than 7 000 000 tons. This has caused and is continuing to cause anxiety in the U.S.A. In many countries young men for a number of reasons, largely environmental and social, are not coming forward in sufficient numbers for mining requirements and the same pattern has revealed itself in the Republic. This is, indeed, alarming because mining men in large numbers will be required to meet the estimated tonnage requirements set out in the following Table: It is difficult to visualise the replacement of these coal requirements either by oil or by nuclear fuels. The coal must be mined and men are required for the purpose. Unless a greater section of the population is allowed to participate in the more responsible aspects of mining, there is a serious likelihood that demand will not be matched by output. In addition to local demand, a lively export trade is possible. Exports are dependent on the future capacity of the South African Railways and Harbours and on Government policy. An export figure of 10000000 tons per year during the decade can be visualised and this figure would raise total estimated sales production to a figure of over 100 000 000 tons in 1980. Understanding the deportment of minerals in size fractions has already led to improvements in the flow sheets for platinum minerals beneficiation. There are, however, more potential changes in the flow sheets that may improve the recovery of platinum group metals or reduce the costs of beneficiation before refining. Based on known technology of pre-concentration, milling, gravity concentration, flotation, and magnetic separation a number of potential alterations or additions can be considered and motivated based on the mineral deportment in size fractions.
