The aim of this paper is to study the characteristics of limestone particles (size varies from 4 mm to 20 mm) during its transportation from open cast mines through pipes. The influence of four different size fractions of limestone samples (4–6 mm, 6–10 mm, 10–15 mm, and 15–20 mm) on pipe flow characteristics during vertical transport in a 100 mm NB hose pipe was investigated. The flow velocities in the vertically lifting pipe was varied from 0.95 m/s to 2.78 m/s and a rotary feeder of 2 to 4 tonne/hr. capacity was employed to feed the limestone samples to the lifting pipe. The pressure drop data for the different size fractions of limestone samples at different mixture velocities were analysed. The effect of input volume fraction and superficial velocity of limestone samples on hold-up ratio were discussed. It was indicated that there was no substantial increase in pressure drop of slurry samples in the studied range of concentrations (CW = 4.22% - 12.54%), particle size, and low to medium range mixture velocities with respect to water run head loss data. The hold-up for the larger size fractions (15–20 mm) of limestone samples was found to be significant as compared to smaller size fractions, which may be due to terminal settling velocities of individual fractions of the studied samples.

In this study, the effects of heat treatment on phase formation and surface morphology of the Cr-Pt coated system are investigated using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The CrPt andCr4Pt (Cr3Pt - A15 type) phases were formed after heat treatment of the coated samples. Heat treating at 1000°C renders a distinct island coating morphology that is non-continuous in nature. A diffusional model is proposed for this coated system with regards to the surface morphology formation after heat treatment.

The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores. Ventilation and air-conditioning are some of the most energy-consuming processes in deep underground mining. Additionally, the energy consumption of these processes systematically increases along with the expansion of the mine. Therefore, proper energy efficiency assessment and consumption forecasts of these systems are particularly important in modern mines for ongoing tracking and planning of the likely costs. In the article, a short-term prediction model for surface air–conditioning stations is described. This model takes into account dependencies that were identified, based on the data from the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. These dependencies between the response value and the external conditions are then incorporated into the model. This way, for example, the ambient temperature or the total number of specific days of the week (with sometimes significantly lower or higher than the weekly average energy consumption levels) are included. Taking into account these dependencies, and e.g. forecasted average monthly temperatures allow us to include the seasonality of energy consumption in the presented model. In the article, a sample energy efficiency analysis of the A/C system based on an example of the KGHM Polish Copper Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine is performed. The results of the solution proposed in the article are then evaluated, and compared to the currently functioning, more basic forecasting methods. However, given the general nature of the dependencies used in the model, similar solutions could be used in other case studies.

After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. Coal briquetting traditionally makes use of high-dosage, nonpolymeric binders (such as coal tar pitch or molasses) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at low dosages for the binding of fine and ultrafine coal. Due to constraints associated with the manufacturing and cost of PVA-bound briquettes, a novel polyacrylic binder was developed that could possibly be added in low dosages at room temperature. A set of formulations of two polyacrylic components (components A and B) was developed, from which an optimal binder mixture was determined. This formulation comprises 40wt.% component A and 10wt.% component B with a 0.04wt.% cross-linking additive, and the balance water. The uniaxial briquette compressive strength was used to obtain the optimal binder mixture. The binder mixture was added to the coal powder in dosages from 0.1 to 1.2wt.%. Mechanical tests and thermogravimetric analysis in an oxidized environment at a maximum temperature of 930°C were conducted. Binder-bound briquettes were compared to binderless briquettes and PVA-bound briquettes. Briquettes made from the polyacrylic formulation had uniaxial compressive strengths double that of the binderless briquette yield strength, as well as the minimum recommended compressive strength of 0.375 MPa. The organic binders did not affect the combustion of the briquettes, since the results compared well with the binderless briquettes. The polyacrylic formulation is considered to be a possible substitute for PVA in terms of mechanical and thermal properties and raw material cost.

The potential benefits of implementing the Last Planner System (LPS) on mining infrastructure projects were explored through two case studies in the South African mining industry. The first part of the study involved measurement of the impact of LPS through earned value techniques on secondary project data. The second part sought to establish the lean construction success factors leading to improvements in construction performance. This was done by means of a research questionnaire distributed to the project owner’s teams, contracted parties, and the LPS facilitators. The results revealed a positive correlation between LPS application and planned percentage complete. However, the performance achieved during the LPS pilot was not sustained. The success factors and benefits considered most evident in the case study pilot differed among the three stakeholder groups. The findings are expected to guide construction stakeholders to better define performance measures and focus on factors required to make LPS implementation more effective in the South African mining sector.

A typical deep shaft is President Steyn No. 2 in the Free State, where 9 tonnes of ore are hoisted at about 15 metres per second from 2378 metres below surface. The skips and attachments each weigh 7 tonnes and they are connected by 43 tonnes of rope, so that to hoist the 9 tonnes of payload, a total of 66 tonnes is accelerated from stand still to 55 km/h for each cycle, using an average of 3185 kilowatts of power in the process. The cycle time for the hoisting is 3.22 minutes. The peak power consumption is 6954 kilowatts, which determines the size of the motor used. Is this the right approach? Are larger skips moving at higher speeds the answer? Is there another way?

A two-dimensional finite difference model has been developed to describe the reduction of kilogram quantities of dehydrated phosphogypsum. The model’s scope has been limited to focus on the heat transfer and reactions that occur within a mass of material contained in a vessel inside a furnace rather than also including the effects of heat transfer to the vessel. Changes in the heat transfer properties (k, ρ, and Cp) are incorporated as the composition of the mass changes as the chemical reactions progress. The model is validated against experimental data, with samples heated to 1000°C at 3°C min−1 while purging with nitrogen gas. A sensitivity analysis of model predictions to the pre-exponential factor of the reaction rate constant of the main chemical reaction and the thermal conductivity of the powder bed indicated that, at the envisaged process conditions, the behaviour of the system depends much more on the rate of heat transfer than on the rate of the chemical reaction. The model demonstrated a significant increase in accuracy when the thermal conductivity was modelled to increase linearly with temperature compared to assuming a constant value.

"This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives have several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper. The main findings are as follows:•,Coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate •,For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where, ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition •,Significant errors could be made if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen) •,For elemental analyses, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range •,For representation of sulphur in coal, double-counting due to SO3 in the ash analysis should be avoided •,Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2; however, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV results in significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy (up to 6.9% error for a set of South African coals). Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than the abovementioned four, provided the enthalpy is corrected •,It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ is incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to the form of carbon being different than graphite should be used, as that would imply doublecounting some effects."

"The Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is developing a coherent system of programs to aid in the full spectrum of activities arising in the planning of new as well as operating mining enterprises. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the design and application of two subsystems in the complex.One of these subsystems is an initial version of a production simulator. This program draws upon a model of a mining enterprise and simulates the operational and financial aspects of a set of alternative mine production plans.These plans are specified in terms of proposed sequences of operations. Details such as reserves, production rates, resource requirements and so on, are taken from the model.Physically, the model takes the form of a cross-referenced data base, maintained by means of a general file maintenance system which is another subsystem described.The paper concludes with a description and analysis of the first practical application of the two programs."

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation's Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Vice-President: "It is my pleasant duty to call on Dr du Toit to deliver his paper, entitled, 'The functional relationship between dust hazard and the rate of collecting funds to pay compensation for pneumoconiosis'." After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. Cave mining is an underground mass mining technique. The largest projects, which are known as ‘super caves’, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of ore per day, which involves large footprints with considerable column height, and have a life of mine of over 20-40 years. These operations are typically located deep, under high stresses and in competent rock masses, making initiation and propagation of the caving process harder to manage. These challenges must be confronted by optimizing the fragmentation of the orebody to achieve smaller size blocks that will result in consistent caving and improved flow of the ore from the drawpoints. To achieve better performance from the drawpoints, preconditioning is applied to fragment and damage the material required to cave. We present a proposed design for preconditioning in underground mines, considering the challenges that these large-scale mines are already facing, based on a comprehensive analysis of current design parameters, case studies, and sensitivity analyses using numerical models.
