1.0 FRAMEWORK FOR COMPARISON This document describes the decision factors that bear on the selection of the modulation process for the wireless underground medium frequency (MF) communication system. The selected modulation process must satisfy the Bureau of Mines stated objective of improving general communications within an underground mine. The improvement being sought includes the development of a wireless communication technology of measurable benefit to both mine safety and mine productivity. The improvement will allow wireless communications paths to exist between roving miners. The wireless communication paths will also be made compatible with the existing underground telephone system to extend paging and voice communication throughout the underground mine. The new wireless equipment will include man-pack, vehicular, repeater, and base station transceivers. Repeaters and base stations will feature coupling networks for interfacing with the existing telephone circuits. Frequency modulation (FM) and single sideband (SSB) modulation processes are analyzed in view of the special conditions associated with underground mining. Of primary importance is the tremendous electrical noise generated in an operating mine that could adversely affect communications quality. High noise coupled with high attenuation rate of near field signals forces the communication system to be inherently short range. Subsidence data gathered by the U.S. Bureau of Mines over a series of longwall panels in the Pittsburgh Coalbed were studied to obtain insight as to the role of time in the subsidence process. It was found that subsidence began essentially with undermining and was completed within 1 year. The progress of the subsidence was dependent upon location above the panel. Subsidence in the central area of the subsidence trough, where subsidence is the greatest, was about 90 pct complete by the time the face had progressed a distance equal to one overburden thickness beyond a particular surface point. For a point over the rib of the longwall panel, the subsidence was only about 60 pct complete at this time. Data from three other sites in the northern Appalachian Coal Basin were analyzed to determine if an anomaly or the true characteristics of the subsidence process had been observed. All sites behaved similarly in the central portion of the subsidence trough. However, the subsidence of points over and adjacent to the ribs of the longwall panels was site specific. The fact that movement across the width of the panel was not uniform should be taken into account in assessing damages or the potential for damages resulting from mining-induced subsidence.

The hazard to health from contamination of air by a noxious gas depends not only on the potential harmful response attending exposure, but also on the warning properties, which in effect may be termed the "accompanying warning response," This warning may be manifested as an odor, taste, irritation of the eyes, nose, or throat, or perhaps headache, vertigo, or nausea. These manifestations may be painful and even slightly harmful, but to a much lesser degree than the primary injury of exposure. The warning response mitigates hazards directly in proportion to the degree of Intolerability which accompanies injurious exposure, and accordingly its absence augments hazards. This accounts for the fact that the actual health hazards from a non-odorous or non-irritating gas or vapor of comparatively low toxicity sometimes equal or exceed the hazard from a considerably more toxic substance, but one which possesses a marked odor or produces eye, nose, or throat irritation in advance of harmful exposure. When a substance lacks the properties for giving warning, it is often possible to impart them by the addition of a small amount of another substance which has an exceedingly high warning intensity. The vapors of this substance, commonly termed a "warning agent" or "tracer gas," escape and mingle with the gas or vapor which lacks warning properties and thereby apprises persons of the latter's presence. The amount of the warning agent added is that which will give adequate warning in advance of serious physiological harm from the dangerous gas or vapor.

Predict the spontaneous combustion potential of a coal, using an expert system computer program. Background Approximately 15% of underground coal mint fires in the United States are attributed to spontaneous combustion. These spontaneous combustion fires frequently occur in worked-out or abandoned areas of a coal mine, This makes the control and extinguishment of the fire difficult and often requires large sections of the mine or even the entire mine to be scaled for long periods of time. A prior knowledge of the self-heating potential of the coal can be useful in preventing spontaneous combustion fires through the use of aggressive monitoring and control measures at existing coal mining operations, and in the planning oh new mines. Many factors can affect the spontaneous combustion process in a mine, including the self-heating potential of the coal, ventilation, geologic factors, and mining conditions and practices. Various test methods have been used to evaluate the relative self-healing potential of coals, including crossing point temperature and adiabatic heating methods, and oxygen adsorption techniques. However, these tests arc usually time-consuming and difficult to conduct, limiting their use to laboratories.

When explosions have occurred in mines where rock dust has been used to some extent, generally to a very limited extent, the press has immediately characterized those mines as "rock-dusted." To persons familiar with the method of rock-dusting, it is apparent that if rock-dusting is done properly, if all mine surfaces are rock-dusted to within at least 40 feet of the faces of rooms and entries, and if the incombustible content of the dust is more than 65 per cent, there is little likelihood that an explosion of coal-dust will occur. The report that an explosion has occurred in a "rock-dusted" mine immediately conveys to the mind of the alert safety advocate the information that the mine is inadequately rock-dusted or that either dust sampling of the rock-dusted surfaces has not been done or, if done, the mine has not been redusted with sufficient promptness. Rules for Collection of Samples Collection of dust samples is by no means intricate, but a few simple rules must be kept in mind if the results are to be dependable. A sample must represent the true average conditions of the dust in the section or zone in which it is taken, and therefore 'the point at which the sample is to be collected must be selected with care. During an explosion much if not all of the dust on the ribs, roof, timber, and road in the affected region is blown into the air; the sample, therefore, should contain all loose dust and material on: the surfaces to a depth of about 1 inch, if that amount is present. If there is considerable sand locally along the track, care must be taken not to include enough of this material to vitiate the sale and distort the results; however, if the sand is distributed throughout the region being sampled it should be included. Dust should not be collected from recesses in the ribs, such as hitches cut for timber, as the character of the dust in such places is often different from that on the ribs proper. Samples should not be collected at points where the dusting machine has been loaded or at a point where the machine has stopped and discharged for a longer period than at other points on the entry or in the rooms. In short, the sample must represent AVERAGE CONDITIONS, and if there is any doubt as to the character of the dust it is far better to have too much combustible matter than too much incombustible matter in the sample, as it is best to err on the side of safety if it is necessary to err.

An improved maximum-bubble-pressure system using the Sugden twin-capillary method for measuring the surface tension and density of molten metals is described. Improvements include (1) internally ground capillary tips, (2) electronic pressure transducers, (3) micrometer adjustment of immersion depth for density measurements, (4) valuing arrangements to allow operation at other than atmospheric pressure, (5) temperature range to 1,100° C, and (6) recorder readout of pressures. Data for surface tension of mercury from 20° to 300° C are given.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information and advice regarding the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for the analysis of mine atmospheres. Such requests are made by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with the safety of mining operations. In many instances it is desired to install a complete laboratory, which will necessitate purchase of suitable gas-analysis apparatus and all the minor but important accessory equipment needed to carry on this type of work. Although publications that describe methods and techniques applicable to the analysis of mine atmospheres are available, it is not within the scope of such publications to give detailed information on laboratory equipment or design. Persons unfamiliar with laboratory practices and gas-analysis procedures may find it difficult to decide upon the proper equipment for their particular needs and to itemize the various accessories that must be obtained to set up a complete laboratory.The purpose of this circular is to discuss the different types of equipment that may be used in the analysis of mine atmospheres, with particular regard to the application and limitations of each type. Information on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres is given also, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. As much of the necessary equipment may be obtained from laboratory supply houses, the information should aid in arriving at estimates of the cost of proposed laboratories.The procedures involved in the analysis of mine atmospheres are not described; such information is contained in publications referred to in this circular."

Reduce injury to people or damage to equipment when a scheduled production blast is detonated. Approach The essential elements of an effective blast area security system were identified through case studies of five mining operations where the blast area guarding practices were considered to be superior to those generally found in the industry. These elements were used in making recommendations for improved blast area safeguarding practices. Background The blast area security system is a means by which the mine operator prevents injury to people or damage to equipment when blasting is performed. Analysis of blasting accidents showed that most blasting accidents occur during scheduled blasting and are due to inadequate blast-site security. Factors contributing to the system's breakdown are failure to clear the blast zone, inadequate guarding. and failure of personnel to follow instructions, retreat to a safe location, and/or take adequate cover. Mine personnel, visitors and even trespassers can inadvertently wander into a blasting zone unless proper procedures exist to ensure that all personnel are cleared from the blast zone and kept safely away until after blasting IS completed. Statistics show that the blaster is the miner most frequently injured In these accidents.

Protect rescue workers fighting fires or mine personnel temporarily working in hot environments from heat stress. Approach A specially designed ice-cooled vest is worn while working in hot environments where cooling the mine air is not possible. How It Works The vest holds a total of 44 individual ice cells in packets that are firmly held near the wearer's skin. These ice cells remove heat from the wearer, reducing heat stress and increasing comfort. The locations of the ice cells and packets are shown in the diagram. The vest is constructed in three layers with the outer layer being aluminzed fiberglass cloth. Its aluminized surface reflects radiated heat, and its fiberglass cloth provides fire resistance and strength.

Longwall production levels are high, and there are several different sources of dust to contend with. If dust levels are high, the initial effort should be devoted to finding which source is the cause. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. To control dust at longwalls, a large amount of ventilation air and spray water must be used. The water must be sprayed correctly so as not to blow dust into the walkway. Techniques to change local airflow patterns can be helpful. The shearer-clearer, as well as gob and wing curtains, are examples of such techniques. Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

Data from oil well logs and core analyses were used to quantitatively evaluate formation porosity and water saturation of heterogeneous carbonates and to study the pore geometry and performance characteristics of cores from these formations. Logs and cores from the Madison limestone from 233 wells in three fields in the Williston basin were used in the investigation. A comparison of log and core analyses shows that log porosities are consistently larger than core porosities, and the differences are correlatable with core porosity ranges. Water saturations from logs are usually smaller than the corresponding core saturations by summation of fluids, but the difference is attributable to mud filtrate invasion into the cores during drilling. Petrophysical studies show that the low permeabilities and high residual water saturations in these reservoir rocks are due to their fine crystalline texture and complex pore geometry (heterogeneity). It is concluded that both log and core analyses must be used for reliable evaluation of these carbonate formations.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the hydraulic stimulation of a gob-degasification borehole to determine if this procedure would aid in degasifying a longwall panel. The stimulated borehole did not degasify the longwall panel as expected either before or after mining of the panel started. It reduced the underground methane emission only 11 pct, considerably less than the reductions effected by two unstimulated boreholes in the same panel. Some probable reasons for the reduced methane flow from the hydraulically stimulated borehole are very low reservoir gas pressure, location of hydraulically stimulated zones within the grouted casing, a casing break caused by lateral shifting, possible vertical movement of rock strata during caving, grouting of a 4-inch pipe blocking three stimulated zones, plasticity of shales, and possible hole damage by swelling of water-sensitive minerals. The borehole was also located between two second-mined areas, which may have allowed partial degasification of the overburden and the coalbed in advance of mining. Finally, a period of 3 months is probably not long enough for the borehole to degasify the overburden before mining.

A thick-wall cylinder solution applicable to the evaluation of anisotropic elastic parameters is derived for the interpretation of stress relief data. For a restricted class of problems, a special relationship among certain orthotropic moduli yields stress distributions for the plane orthotropic problem that are identical to the corresponding isotropic case. A ring or hollow cylinder with these specialized anisotropic properties subjected to uniform radial loads is one of the problems in this class. Consequently, known stress solutions are used to develop the strains and displacements for a specialized orthotropic thick-wall cylinder under uniform pressures. The results are consistent with anisotropic equations used in the evaluation of in situ rock stresses.

Compare the dust control efficiency and bit life of surface coal mine drills using standard water injection and water injection with water separation. Approach A research study was conducted to determine if a water separation technique affects wet suppression dust control. Dust control efficiency and bit life of surface coal mine drills were compared during tests using both standard water injection (wet drill bit cutting) and water injection with water separation (dry drill bit cutting). Background Surface coal mine blast hole drills typically generate a substantial amount of dust during the drilling cycle. One method used to control this dust is the injection of water into the bailing air. This is known as wet suppression.

Assist in controlling or extinguishing fires that occur in abandoned mine lands (AML) by providing a compilation of information on past fire control projects, the estimated extent of the current problem, and factors affecting the occurrence, propagation, and extinguishment of AML tires. Conventional fire control methods and their probable effectiveness are evaluated. Background Fires that occur in abandoned coal mines, waste banks, and coal outcrops constitute a serious health, safety, and environmental hazard from toxic fumes, deterioration of air quality, and subsidence. Although fires on AML occur in every coal-producing State, the severity of the problem varies, with most underground fires occurring in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. Surface fires are prevalent in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Methods to extinguish or control AML fires, including excavation, fire barriers, and scaling, are generally expensive and have a relatively low probability of success (see figures 1 and 2). Bureau of Mines Study The Bureau compiled information from a variety of sources and found that the problem of AML fires is a serious one. Such fires can involve a high degree of hazard and can be difficult and costly to control. AML fires usually involve smoldering combustion in outcrops, waste banks, or abandoned mines. Given the nature of these fires, it is unlikely that the extent of the problem or the cost of solutions will decrease in the near future.

The U.S. Department of Labor?s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),through its winter alert program, warns U.S. mine operators and miners at underground coal mines of workplace hazards that can arise when the weather turns colder. MSHA records indicate that, historically, most explosions in underground coal mines occur during winter months. ?The changes in weather can increase the risk of fatal accidents,? says David G. Dye, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. ?Each miner and mine operator must take individual responsibility to eliminate the kinds of hazards that can cause fatal accidents in the workplace. Safety is not the other guy?s job?safety begins with you.? In fact, MSHA?s slogan for this year?s campaign is ?Winter Alert Starts Now and Safety Begins with YOU.? This message reminds miners and mine operators of the risks of colder weather and educates them about helping to reduce risks and hazards. ?Safety requires the joint effort of both management and labor,? Dye says. ?Everyone at the mine site must see safety as an individual value and act to ensure a safe working environment.?

A REPORT of technological advancements restricted to a specific 12-month period is impractical. Inherent in the nature and development of technology is the element of time; rarely can a new process or product be attributed to a particular year. An overall picture of general trends and pattern changes, however, is indicative of technological growth. This paper presents selected observations and discussions of current metallurgical research and practices in an attempt to develop' such a picture. Of the estimated $16.5 billion spent for research and development in the United States in 1962, at least 80 percent was earmarked for the aircraft, electronics, chemical, and machinery industries. Much of the effort was of the end-use variety and was oriented closely to the national defense and aerospace programs. Only a small fraction of the total research money was directed to studies of the utilization and improvement of metals. Even if the investigations in allied fields such as solid state physics are included, the total research expenditure for metal and mineral materials barely reached $500 million. An additional $200 million was spent by industry and government for development of minerals recovery and processing methods.

"Among the surplus explosives left on band with the War Department was a quantity of that styled Trojan Grenade Powder, which was especially designed during the war for use as a bursting charge in grenades and for which naturally there would be very little military use in time of peace. With a view to its disposal through use in civil projects a quantity was sent to the Bureau of Minas explosives experiment station, where analysis showed that its characteristic explosive ingredient was nitrostarcn and that the powder bad the following composition:Trojan Grenade Powder appears as a dark gray granular substance, part of which is slightly pulverulent. The granules fairly hard. The explosive is not at all dusty, and has the consistency of granulated sugar.Nitrostarch is a substance produced by treating starch with nitric and sulphuric acids and in appearance it looks very little different from powdered starch. It resembles nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin in its constitution and explosive properties and has been longer known than either, it having been prepared by Braconnet in 1833. Nitrostarch explosives have in recent years been developed for industrial use in this country, they having been used to an extent in blasting in the Canal Zone, yet as this grenade powder was a special composition it seemed desirable that a complete series of tests should be run upon it. This was done, and the results are reported in the following table in comparison with those previously obtained in testing ammonia dynamite."

Improve the safety, reliability and overall effectiveness of mine stench warning systems and to provide a means of remote control stench injector operation. Approach Industrial gas odorants were analyzed for their suitability for use in mine stench warning systems. A prototype stench injector capable of precise flowrate control was designed, fabricated, and tested using the odorant chosen as having the most favorable properties. Based on the results of the field tests, a second generation injector was developed. The second generation unit features optional remote control operation, and in addition, is simpler to refill and is less expensive than the original injector. A complete second generation system, consisting of two manually operated injectors and one remote controlled injector was in-mine tested through actual mine fire drills.
