"Gravitational forces have been found to be an important factor in defining the particle collection efficiency curve of inertial impactors for large particles. In general it was found that if the parameter G = gW /V 0 2 (g is the gravitational acceleration. w is the nozzle diameter and V 0 is the average fluid velocity at the nozzle throat) in greater than 10-3 the efficiency curve would shift to lower panicle sizes. No effect could be seen for lower values of G.IN'IRODUCTIONInertial impactors have long been used as classifiers for airborne particles. By proper design of the nozzles and flow rate it is possible to classify particles with a fairly sharp cut in the particle size range from approximately .02 µm to 50 µm. Because of inertial impactors wide usage they have been extensively studied calibrated and evaluated. Most of these studies have been experimental calibrations of single stages using monodisperse aerosol particles. However, due to impactor simplicity. i.e. a jet of particle laden air impinging upon a flat plate with large inertia particles crossing the streamlines and impacting upon the plate the impactor also lends itself to theoretical evaluation.The most comprehensive method for analyzing impactors theoretically is to use finite difference solutions to the Navier-Stokcs equations and solve for the velocity components and pressure at node points of a grid placed over the area of interest. Using iteration and relaxation techniques the value of the velocity vectors can be determined at these node points with good accuracy. Once the velocities arc known, theoretical particles of known size can be placed into the now field and their trajectories determined by analyzing their equation of motion using numerical methods.Rader and Marple (1985) have performed theoretical analysis on impactors and have included such factors as Ultra-Stoksian .drag and the physical diameter of the particle in their analysis. However, even with these· factors included, there appears to be discrepancy · between the experimental and theoretical results when the particle size is larger than approximately 4 or 5 µm. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be the effect of gravity on the particle as it passes through the impactor. Therefore, a program was initiated to study the effects of gravitational forces on the collection· efficiency of particles in impactors. The results of that study arc presented here."

In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.

This Bureau of Mines study was initiated to determine whether or not a large-scale investigation of 400-Hz applications in coal mines was justified as a means of increasing safety in operations due to size and weight reductions in portable and other mining machinery. Potential uses for 400-Hz power in mining operations are explored, and cost and size comparisons with 60-Hz systems are made. The use of variable-frequency motor drive is suggested for conveyors. The conclusion was reached that there is no significant potential safety increase due to a general size and weight reduction, as the fact of such general reduction cannot be demonstrated.

Unusual mining conditions prevail in the State of Washington because the majority of the coal seams lie on extra steep dips, and the roof and floor of the seams are of such a character as to require an excessive amount of timber- ing. The seams as a rule give off a considerable amount of methane, which makes good ventilation imperative. Due to physical conditions, supervision is costly and travel about the workings is difficult. Because of the facts stated, the accident rate has been above the average, and for some time considerable thought has been given the idea of making promotion of safety in and about the mines a responsibility to be shared equally by the employees and the management. With this idea in mind the legislature of the State of Washington, turing March, 1927, passed laws providing that safety committees be selected to function at the coal mines of the State and at the same time recognizing the fact that first-aid education is an integral part of any safety movement; legislation was passed making it mandatory to have all persons in and about the ines trained in first-aid administration. The provisions of the State mining law3 are as follows: "In every mine a general safety committee shall be selected, composed of the mine superintendent or manager of mines, one man selected by the employees or any association of employees in or around said mine, and a third member selected by these two. "The general safety committee shall elect one of the members to act as chairman and one to act as secretary. The duties of the chairman shall be to preside at all meetings of the general safety committee, enforce its rules and regulations and see that its business is conducted in a prompt and business-like manner. The secretary shall keep an accurate written record of the proceedings of all meetings, conduct its correspondence and post notices of regular and special meetings and other matters pertaining to safety. The duties of the general safety committee shall be to investigate all serious and fatal accidents; make bi-monthly.

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) was identified as early as 1918 in Bedford, Indiana in the U.S. Since then much research work has been done around the world in the areas of medical, epidemiological, engineering and legal aspects of HAVS. In Japan, much of the pioneering work in this field has been performed by Dr. Setsuo Maeda and his staff at the National Institute of Industrial Health (NIIH) in Kawasaki. Most recently, reports of work done by this group and by Dr. Ren Dong1 of NIOSH in the U.S., as well as many other suppliers and Japanese practitioners were presented at the 13th Japan Group Meeting on Human Response to Vibration held in Osaka2 during August 3-5, 2005. This paper discusses human judgment and decision-making under stress. The authors review selected recent literature across various disciplines and suggest a definition of stress within the context of decision-making during the management of emergencies. They also discuss fieldwork by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, NIOSH, which explores traumatic incident stress, the relationship between previous training and performance under stressful conditions, and human behavior in underground mine fires. The authors assert that stress is one of the factors that decision-makers must contend with in most life-or-death situations. They suggest that a better understanding of individual's judgment and decision-making activities while under stress would yield a better understanding of how people reach the choices they make in emergencies. This enhanced understanding would be of enormous value to emergency managers, researchers, and policymakers.

The story of helium is one of the romances of science . Probably nothing , except perhaps radium , compares with it in human interest . Helium is one of the best examples of a discovery in pure science that has wide commercial application . In 1868 , an eclipse of the sun was visible in India , several scientific men who were in India making observations of the eclipse turned a spectroscope for the first time on the solar chromosphere - that part of the atmosphere of the sun , about 10,000 miles deep , which merges into the corona . A bright yellow line was observed and was thought at first to be due to sodium . Janssen showed , however , that this line was not just the same as either the D or D₂ line of sodium, although it was extremely close to these lines , hence he suggested that the new line have the designation D₂ . Frankland and Lockyer decided that Dz was due to an element in the sun not previously discovered on the earth , and suggested for it the name "Helium" from the Greek work " Helios " the sun . For several years nothing more was done in connection with this element . In 1894 , Sir William Ransay , in conjunction with Lord Rayleigh , made his memorable discovery of argon in the atmosphere , which was announced at the British Association meeting in the same year . After this discovery , Ramsay looked for other sources of the element . Through Sir Henry Miers , he learned that Dr. W. F. Hillebrand , of the United States Geological Survey , had obtained an inert gas from certain uranium minerals , which gas he had decided was nitrogen . Ramsay believed that part of it might be argon ; he obtained from Hillebrand for experimentation , a sample of the mineral , cleveite , one of the uranium minerals , and after extracting gas from the mineral and purifying it , he ran it into a spectrum tube . The lines obtained ' were , however , different from those of argon; among them was the bright yellow line noted by Janssen . Thus was terrestrial heliun discovered .

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments using four different coal types to determine the effect of attack angle and symmetric bit wear on airborne respirable dust (ARD) generated by point-attack bits and in energy consumption. Neither had a significant effect on ARD at the 95-pct confidence level, but bit wear had a significant effect (95 pct confidence) on specific energy (energy per gram of cut coal) for three coal types, Depth of cut was the most significant factor affecting ARD and specific energy.

Nineteen quarry blasts were instrumented with particle-velocity gages mounted in a uniform soil overburden, back of one face in a quarry in Iowa. Three components of particle velocity, radial, vertical, and transverse, were recorded at each of eight stations back of each blast. Distances from blast area to gage stations ranged from 150 to 3,000 feet. Eleven of the quarry blasts employed millisecond delays, and eight were instantaneous blasts. Charge weight per hole was 200 pounds, and the charge weight per delay interval, including the instantaneous blasts, ranged from 100 to 3,000 pounds. Analysis of the data from these tests shows that the particle velocity, V, produced at distance, D, by a quarry blast of charge per delay interval, W, can be represented by an equation of the form, V=KWb D-n, where b and n are exponents, and K is the intercept constant which is a measure of the level of vibration. The value of K for a millisecond-delayed blast employing one hole per delay interval is about 42 percent larger than the value of K for a single-hole blast. The value of K for a multiple-hole milli-second-delayed blast is about the same as that for an instantaneous blast when the charge per delay for the millisecond blast is equal to the total charge for the instanteneous blast. The vibration level from millisecond-delayed blasts employing one hole per delay is shown to be independent of the length of the delay interval and the number of delay intervals over the range of the variables tested: 9, 17, and 34 milliseconds and 3, 7, and 15 delays per blast.

The Bureau of Mines investigated electrowinning and tapping lanthanum metal from lanthanum oxide in a fluoride bath. The electrolyte was composed of LaF3, BaF2, and LiF. Metal containing 0.2 percent impurities was produced at a rate of over 2 pounds per hour. Principal impurities were carbon, aluminum, and silicon. Low-carbon metal was produced by continually discharging the carbon oxide gases and maintaining 0.1-atmosphere pressure. Anode reactions and cell design were found to be important factors in cell operation. Both frozen electrolyte skulls and tungsten metal crucibles proved satisfactory for collecting the metal and did not react with the molten lanthanum.

The preface of the United States Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction contains the following paragraphs: One of the most important inquiries that Congress has authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct relates to health condi- tions among those engaged in the mineral industries. Investigations made early with a view to bettering these conditions demonstrated the need of prompt care of injured miners, as, under the difficulties inherent to mining and other mineral industries; wounds seemingly unimportant, if not treated promptly, may become infected and possibly cause permanent crippling or even death of the porach. In the past many seriously injured persons have been treated by fellow workers ignorant of approved means of treatment and transportation and have been handled in such a manner as to cause suffering and to accentuate injuries to such a degree as to bring about permanent disablement. Accordingly, the need of general instruction in first aid became apparent. It must be recognized that the conditions in and about the mines, mills, smelters, quarries, oil fields, etc., usually present difficulties not found in large industrial centers where experienced surgeons are available and hospitals close at hand. Many mines are isolated and, when an accident occurs several miles underground, there may be a serious lapse of time before the injured person can be brought to the surface and taken to the hospital or given attention by a sur- geon who may have to come a long distance. Under such conditions it has been frequently demonstrated that, if effective first aid is not given, the injured person may die or become permanently crippled... First-aid instruction has been found to be an excellent aid3in pre- venting accidents. The primary purpose of this paper is to show the appreciable savings that were made by roof-bolting the main west entry of the Kings mine, which was to be the permanent, main haulage road, as compared to the cost of supporting the same roof with peg timbering as first planned. Additional items that might prove valuable to other mine operators are contained in this paper and detailed below. 1. A detailed cost of the system of roof support known locally as the peg-timbering method is given. It consists fundamentally of supporting steel cross bars on pegs inserted into holes drilled in the ribs close to the roof. 2. A method of supporting the roof in caved entries is shown, where such support must endure for an extended period in haulageways and air courses.

The investigation described in this report is part of a survey by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the titanium resources of the United States. The purpose of this project was to study a typical coastal deposit of beach sands in the Middle Atlantic States, particularly in the area surrounding the Delmarva Peninsula. The field investigation consisted of a reconnaissance survey of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, followed by surface sampling and drilling of the sands on Assateague Island, off the Atlantic coast of Maryland. The study covered the period January-December 1957. Detailed analyses were made of 5-foot sections of eight drill holes along the Maryland section of the island. The heavy-mineral fraction of these samples was separated by sink-float tests, using acetylene bromide as the heavy liquid. The minerals comprising the heavy fraction were examined microscopically, and mineral counts were made on selected samples.

The Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines has recently conducted tests on two tailings from black sand which had been treated previously at the Station. The results of this previous treatment have be on given in a paper entitled "Recovery of Gold from Black Sand by Classifier Concentration." The gold in these tailings was intimately united with quartz, and was so finely divided that it could not be detected with the naked eye, nor even by P&nn ing unless the material was ground. Its fineness is further shown by the assºy result, which reported only lz per cent of the gold content as "metallics", Wºorea's the assay of the original sand reported 36 per cent of the gold as "metallics." The fact that the gold was in such fine particles, closely united with quartz, precluded further recovery by amalgamation without grinding. On the other hand, the small content present, as well as the lack of grinding appliances at the placer mines of Alasia, made it necessary that the material be cheaply handled if at all. With these facts in mind the experiments described below were undertake.n.

"The importance of adequate mine ventilation for good health and safety conditions has been recognized since miners first ventured underground. All over the world, governmental actions on mine health and safety arc directly connected with mine atmospheric environments their assessment and control. These governmental actions have been, and continue to be, motivated by the repeated experience that potential threats from inadequate control can evolve, either suddenly or in the long-term, into unpleasant reality, with catastrophic health and safety consequences. These governmental actions arc also an indication of the remarkable professional progress being made in the field of mine ventilation.Surely, no developed country allows underground mines to operate without strong measures for the control of ventilation under legislation specific to the mining industry. In the United States, the federal government's responsibility for mine safety has evolved over the years through a series of legislative actions beginning in 1865 and continuing through 1910, 1941, 1947 and 1952.The passage of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act of 1966 (the 1966 Metal Act), the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act) and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (the 1977 Mine Act) arc the most important milestones in this long legislative history. The 1977 Mine Act adopted many of the stronger features of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1970, perhaps the most significant piece of legislation on workers' occupational health and safety in US history.It is worthwhile to ask, ""How far has the United States come in mine ventilation since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act?"" This Act and its associated regulations defined in great specificity many standards for healthful and safe operation of a mine and. in some cases, what constitutes good ventilation practice."

In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. Illinois has the largest reported bituminous coal resources of any state and is one of largest coal-producing states in the nation. Coal-bearing rocks underlie about 65 percent of Illinois, including all or part of 86 of its 102 counties. An estimated 18 1 billion tons of coal resources are still in the ground. Using present mining methods, more than 30 billion tons of coal are classified as recoverable. This represents almost one-eighth of the total recoverable reserves of all types of coal in the United States. The state's surface mining regulatory program was conditionally approved June 1,1982. It received full approval October 25,1988. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 1, 1982, and the AML emergency authority June 11, 1984.

I have been asked to speak briefly about recent progress in the mining industry of the United States, and to touch on the general advancement of en- gineering science as applied to mining. By recent, I shall mean within the past 20 or 30 years. Such a period includes a great many of the changes which are of particular interest to the present generation of engineers, and the undergraduates of today will hardly turn back farther than the beginning of the present century in their study of develop- ment of methods and processes. Also, my own professional life spans this period, and I have seen or have been aware of most of these developments as they were taking place. In my review of developments, for the sake of simplicity and clarity, I shall deal separately with improvements in metal mining, coal mining, mechanical and electrical machinery for mines, metallurgy, petroleum engineering, and safety practices. Under each of these headings I have set down what appear to me to be the outstanding changes brought about during the past 2 or 3 decades. Other points will occur to other engineers; I do not represent that the following re- view is complete; it is only intended to be suggestive. In general, improvements in mining and metallurgical practices have come gradually, the charges being effected little by little, simultaneously in widely scattered places, and through the experience and inventive genius of many men. These changes have has small beginnings, and are generally the cumulative result of many steady and unsensational progressions, which still continue. What we today might be inclined to consider the culmination of a series of betterments in mining is, of course, but an instantaneous phase of developments which will continue in the future at even a more rapid pace than they have in the past. We are looking at but a flesh of a moving picture, with an endless reel to come after we finally leave the theatre. Behind all the changes in the mineral industry, the driving force has been the increasing demand of an expanding population for more metals and minerals with which to advance civilization. In an effort aimed at monitoring mining-induced stress changes that may influence ground failure, the US Bureau of Mines conducted a series of active 3-D seismic tomographic surveys at the Homestake (Lead, South Dakota) and Lucky Friday (Mullan, Idaho) mines. Existing rock bolts were used to mount geophones and as strike points for introducing seismic energy using a 3.6 kg sledge hammer. Travel time measurements were recorded spanning up to 160 m between drifts at several levels. The tomographic uncertainty was minimized by computing iso-velocity surfaces of constant probability based on statistics from multiple reconstructions and a threshold criteria. Periodic imaging using tomographic velocity surfaces demonstrated that temporal and spatial changes in the local stress field occurred in response to ground failure and stope advancement at a gold and silver mine, respectively. Experiments were made with a batch reactor to determine the effect of gas pressures, temperature, and gamma radiation intensity on the reaction CO + Ch ? COC12. The equation, [dp = 0.0110 (1 - 0.01t) (PCOI)1/2 PC12] where [dP] is the change of pressure of phosgene with time (atm/hr), t is the temperature (°C), PCO and PC12 are the reactant pressures (atm), and I is the radiation intensity (r/hr), was found to best fit the data. Oxygen and a large ratio of reactor surface to volume retarded the reaction, but inert gases had no effect. A low-temperature reactor system is proposed to take advantage of the conditions which give a high reaction rate with gamma radiation and a simple scheme of product purification.
