Laboratory tests were conducted with a closed, recycling system to evaluate the effectiveness of solid-in-gas suspensions as heat transport mediums. Micronized graphite in helium or nitrogen was circulated by a centrifugal compressor to determine the feasibility of the method and heat transfer capabilities of the mediums. Suspensions were circulated without plugging or eroding the compressor or piping. At low flowrates and light (0.1 to 0.2 volume-percent) graphite loadings, slightly less power was required to transport a given amount of heat with suspensions than with helium alone. Graphite deposition on the heat exchange surfaces of the cooler decreased the heat transfer effectiveness at higher solids concentration. Efforts to eliminate deposition are described.

"Preliminary examination of tungsten deposits on the Mountain View property near Hyder, Alaska, was made by Neal M. Muir, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines daring the summer of 1942. Fifteen samples were cut, rough esti¬mates of ore reserves were made, and it was proposed to extend the drift on scheelite-bearing vein 300 feet in a northwesterly direction.From May 22 to October 24, 1944, an exploratory project was conducted on the property by the Bureau. In the course of this work, the camp buildings were rehabilitated; the dam, hydraulic line, and machinery were repaired; 226 feet of drift was driven; 80 groove samples aggregating 3.9 tons in weight were cut; a 6,000-foot surface and underground traverse was run; and the area was mapped in detail.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is doe Neal W. Muir, project engineer, and Robert S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Division, Mining Branch, for their supervision of the field work and revision of the report.Acknowledgment is also made to Silbak Premier, Ltd., for rendering valuable assistance in the repair of equipment and for extending various courtesies to Bureau of Mines personnel during the conduct of this project.The Mountain View property is located at latitude 55° 59' north, and longitude 130° 03' west in the Salmon River mining district of southeastern Alaska, about 5 miles in a northwesterly direction from the town of Hyder, which lies at the head of Portland Canal, as shown in figures 1 and 2. Vein outcrops and surface workings are at an elevation of 950 feet and occupy the west flank of a low ridge between Skookum and Fish Creeks, as shown in figure 3. The portal of the long adit exposing the vein at depth is on Skookum Creek about 550 feet north of the confluence of Skookum and Fish Creeks.Access to the property is over a 4-foot wide trail built and maintained by the United States Forest Service. This trail is suitable for pack animals and is adequate for transportation of supplies and material for exploratory work. During the periods of camp construction and past exploratory operations a 4,000-foot, single-cable, aerial tramway, now in disrepair, served for transportation of materials and all machinery from the Salmon River Highway to the property. The cost of such hauling was high, amounting to $12 a ton. Topography is suitable for construction of a ""cat road"" 2 miles in length, connecting the property with the Salmon River Highway. It is estimated that such a road could be built for $5,000 a mile, and supplies, machinery, and concentrates could be haled over it at a cost of less than $2.50 a ton."

Recent developments in portable communication equipment for use in emergency recovery work following mine fires and explosions have wade possible a convenient and dependable means of directing rescue teams working under hazardous conditions. INTRODUCTION Mine rescue and recovery operations following; fires and explosions are frequently conducted under adverse conditions that require the use of oxygen breathing apparatus by members of a 5- or 6-man team. Conventional apparatus used for this purpose for many years was equipped with an oxygen supply adequate for at least 2 hours. The design of the apparatus is such that the nose passages are closed with a clamp, and breathing is accomplished through a mouthpiece connected to the apparatus by tubes and arranged to prevent inhaling air or gases from outside sources. The use of the mouthpiece has presented difficulties in the development of telephone communication because of the wearer's inability to speak while wearing the mouthpiece. The method of conducting operations of rescue teams requires a person to direct operations at a fresh-air base as close to the rescue team as possible. At least one standby rescue team and 2 or 3 other persons assigned to various tasks are stationed at the fresh-air base. An efficient and reliable means of communication between the director of operations and the rescue team is necessary for reasonably safe and efficient work in hazardous areas.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "The purpose or this paper is to disclose analytical, statistical, and observational results relating to mineralogy and trace elements in respirable dust samples collected from two different mines in West Virginia. Samples were taken from longwall panels, and the panels operated in different coal seams, one located in the northern part or the state and the other in the southern region. Mining conditions and equipment arrangements on the panels will be described along with dust control techniques used. Results from sample analyses are summarized with emphasis on relationships between mineralogy, trace elements and mineral particle size to worker locations. Correlations are made between micro x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray analyses for sample mineralogy.IntroductionThrough the work of many researchers worldwide, the health of coal miners in modern societies is now protected from harmful exposure to respirable coal mine dust. A vast amount of research culminated in the exposure-response model of Jacobsen, et al, (l) which has been used to establish the 2 mg/m3 exposure limit in the United States. According to the model exposure to respirable dust for 35 years at this level or less could prevent the occurrence of a clinically significant case of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) in a miner. The exposure limit, of course, must be adjusted whenever greather than five percent free silica exists in the respirable dust.The Jacobsen model was built around a mean mass concentration exposure, which generally showed the highest correlation with both incidence and progression of CWP. As Morgan, et al noted, however, the quantity of respirable dust inhaled is not the only significant factor. 2) They noted that although mass of respirable dust correlates highe.st with the incidence of CWP, it is not a causal factor. Admittedly, the insidious processes causing the disease occur at the lund cell-dust particle level."

Because of U.S. dependency on imported critical metals, the Bureau of Mines has conducted research to evaluate the possible substitution of nitrided low-alloy steels for higher chromium-containing alloys. The corrosion data for nitrided steels are limited primarily to the Soviet literature. The objective of this study was to determine the corrosion properties of six commercially nitrided low-alloy steels in a 5-wt % NaCl solution at pH 4. Weight-loss tests indicated that, in deaerated test solutions, most of the nitrided steels were less corrosion resist-ant than nontreated steels. However, electrochemical tests indicated that under more oxidizing conditions, nitrided materials are converted to a passive state with a significantly reduced corrosion rate. Elec-trochemical tests performed in an aerated environment confirmed the passivity of the samples in an oxidizing environment.

This Bureau of Mines study was made to investigate a possible method for selectively removing the Si02 component of silicate minerals and ores. Of specific interest were aluminum ores and zircon. Methods are described for removing Si02 from these ores as volatile silicon sulfides by treating the ore with sulfur and carbon; with sulfur, carbon, and a reducing gas; or with sulfur compounds and carbon. Comparative results are also given for the desilication of some of the ores with carbon alone to form volatile silicon monoxide. The silica component can be removed partially from bauxites at temperatures above the sublimation temperature of SiS (940° C) by treatment with carbon, sulfur, and methane; however, it is more difficult to remove the silicon from kyanite, manganese silicate, red muds from aluminum processing, kaolinite, lateritic nickel ores, and zircon. Complete desilication requires temperatures ranging from 1,100° C for bauxite to 1,450° C for zircon. Although the high temperatures required and the undesirable metal sulfides produced eliminate practical application of this method using present technology, the Bureau is reporting this data so that they will be available to future investigators.

Talc mining ·in the state of New York was first started about 1876, but important production did not start until 1880, when about 4,000 tons were shipped, In 1883 the production was about 6,000 tons valued at $75,000, or an average of $12.50 per ton, From this date the production gradually inc~eased to a peak of 93,236 tons in 1916, valued at $961,510 or about $10,30 per ton, In 1918 the production declined to 71,167 tons valued at $902,100, or about $12,70 per ton. For ma.ey years New York ,-Jas the largest producer in the United states, but in 1917 and 1918 its output was surpassed by Vennont in tonnage thou[;h not in value. In June, 1920, there were three companies producing talc in the Gouverneur district, st. La,1Tence Co'Ul'lty, and one near Natural Bridge.

The desirability of efficient control of air currents, and the necessity of supplying metal-mine workers with better and safer working conditions, has created an active interest in metal-mine ventilation, especially in recent years. This paper discusses the subject both with regard to efficiency and economy, as well as safety and health. It is based on personal observations of the writer from over four year's study of metal mines in six States, in which more than 50 mines were visited. Many of these were studied in detail; in all several thousand working places were examined, and readings taken relative to ventilation run into the tens of thousands.Object of ventilating metal mines:Whereas in coal mines ventilation is generally regarded as essential, in many metal mines, especially shallow ones, the operators pay little attention to ventilation, or ignore it altogether. Recent shortage of labor, and numerous accidents to which State compensation laws have directed attention, are causing metal-mine operators to regard ventilation more seriously, especially in deep, large mines.There is, in fact, greater necessity for adequate ventilation of metal mines than of coal mines. The latter require air currents to remove explosive gases and the fumes of explosives, but metal mines, in addition to the need of removing fumes of explosives, and occasionally explosive gases, frequently have need of removing dusts dangerous to health, reduction of high temperatures and high humidity, and removal of inert but unhealthful gases like CO2 and nitrugen. The generally accepted superior healthfulness of coal miners as compared with metal miners, is probably due in large part to the better air circulation in working places of coal mines.

"Dedicated to Professor Kurt Leschonski on the occasion of his 60th birthdayAbstractThe kinetics of batch grinding quartz from a feed of 600 by 425 Jim to a product of 80% less than 10 µm have been determined using screening and laser diffractometer sizing for size analysis. The specific rates of breakage decreased by a factor of about three when the material became less than about 100 µm in size, but the primary breakage distribution function also changed to give proponionately more fine material, so that the grinding efficiency expressed as the development of surface area (B.E:T.) per unit of energy input did not decrease. Analysis of the shape of the particles in the 2S x 38 µm size range showed that particles of this size produced by roll crushing or by 8 minutes of grinding of a 42S x 600 µm feed were not different but at long grinding times the particles were rounded. This suggests that the breakage mechanism changes to give more chipping and abrasion and less disintegrative fracture. As the material approached the ultrafine size range it adhered to the mill case and there was no further size reduction. However, a technique for striking the mill case to dislodge the particles was successful in allowing further grinding to 400Jo by weight less than 2 µm.1 IntroductionIt has long been known that it is difficult to accomplish ultrafme grinding in a tumbling ball mill. It has been reported [12, 13] that there is no further size reduction after some hours of grinding cement clinker in laboratory ball mills. Austin and Bagga (1] and Shah and Austin [16] have given an analysis of the kinetics of dry grinding in a laboratory ball mill, introducing the concept of a slowing-down factor K, which is the ratio of the specific rates of breakage at some long time of grinding to the normal specific rates of breakage. They showed that this factor decreased as fine material accumulated in the mill charge. Cottaar and co-workers [8-10] showed that the movement of solid in a dry laboratory ball mill was influenced by the fineness of the solid and by the presence of air, and that evacuation of air from the mill caused particle sedimentation and low rates of breakage.The concept of the slowing-down factor has also been used in wet grinding [17, 18]. At very .high slurry concentrations it appears to be correlated with a steady decrease of mill power caused by the build up of a layer of deposit sticking to the mill case. This reduces the effective mill diameter and, eventually, the balls start to adhere in the layer and centrifuge. A decrease of mill power always indicates less lifting and tumbling of the media and, hence, less breakage. However, slowing-down of breakage rates was also observed at lower slurry concentrations where there was no change in mill power."

The K.T. Dome Mine in Owen and Henry Counties, Ky., has been operated intermittently under several different owners since the early nineteen hundreds. No record of total production is available, but it is said that during 1943 and 1944, while being operated by the Twin Valley Mining Co., 30 cars of zinc concentrates and 10 cars of lead concentrates were shipped. The vein can be traced for about 10 miles along the strike from Lockport, Henry County, to Big Twin Creek in Owen County. It pinches and swells both vertically and horizontally and is reported to average 20 inches in width. In order to develop additional reserves on the property, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes on the south extension of the vein. Drilling disclosed that the vein dips to the west on the south side of the Kentucky River and is continuous along the strike and in depth. However, the extent of mineralization in the vein varies widely.

"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber-sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases soma of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. The voltage of the supply and the variation of the voltage at the receiving end.4. The time length of current flow and whether continuous or intermittent.5. The kind of current (direct or alternating).6. The amount of ca· le left or the reel.7. The type of cable used.8. Bureau of Mines planer mining tests on the phosphate bed of the Douglas mine, near Drummond, Mont., indicated that a competent bed with a Mohs' scale hardness of 3 to 4 cannot be mined economically with the planer. Although planer mining was feasible where the bed was fractured enough for a 4-inch depth of cut to be consistently maintained, the depth of cut in the competent beds at the Douglas mine did not exceed 0.5 inch. Average production rates were 0.15 ton per minute and 9 tons per man-shift.

Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.

"The results of a two—year research study into the relationship between quartz dust levels in host material and in respirable dust in continuous mining sections are presented in this paper. The experimental design and sampling procedures for underground data collection are outlined. The sample analysis procedures for quartz determination, the ¬analysis results and conclusions of the study are discussed.The results of the study indicate that the quartz contents of the airborne dusts are generally higher than those in the host material and bulk samples; and the quartz content increases with decreasing size of the airborne dust. The source for quartz appears to be the roof and the floor materials rather than the coal seam itself. It also appears that the material containing quartz may be breaking into a different size distribution than coal.INTRODUCTION Without doubt, the potential for permanent and severe health damage exists due to respirable dust in the work environment. The attention directed at the reduction of respirable airborne dust to levels below those specified in the law and the achievements to date in meeting these standards are but a reflection of the recognition by many parties government, industry, and labor - of this potential and the need to reduce it.The ambient dust standard in underground U.S. coal mines (2 mg/s3) has a qualifier (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 71.101) to determine an applicable dust standard when a respirable dust sample contains more than 5% quartz. This standard is frequently referred to as the ""reduced standard."" The reasoning behind the reduced standard is the relative toxicity of the quartz dust compared to that of pure coal dust. As the quartz levels in samples increase, the applicable standards become more stringent and maintaining the workings in compliance becomes increasingly difficult.The number of underground work locations operating under the reduced standards has shown a dramatic increase since 1980 (Figure 1). For comparison purposes, there were no mining entities operating on reduced standards prior to 1977. The emergence of this problem, which affects the health and safety standards on one hand and creates severe compliance problems on the other, has been rapid."

"This paper describes the mechanism of coal and rock cutting from quasi-static indentation through dynamic indentation to rotary cutting. The results indicate that during quas~static indentation, a crushed zone, and subsurface fractures develop. The crushed zone is a potential source of dust generation. Dynamic indentation produces a crushed zone due to the frictional resistance offered by the coal or rock during penetration of the bit. Confining pressure changes the mode of failure from tension to mixed tension and shear. The wider bit causes larger crushed zone and more dust generation. The rotary cutting is a combination of quasi-static and dynamic indentation which results in chip formation. 1. INTRODUCTIONThe trend from conventional mining to continuous machine-cutting of coal, using more productive machinery is inexorable. Intolerable levels of dust generated at the face is an indication of inefficient coal or rock cutting by these machines. The Federal Government of the United States paid about 11.7 billion dollars workman compensation to more than 470,000 miners with Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (Newmeyer, 1981). Bieniawski and Zipf (1985) reported that annual benefit payments were about 2 billion dollars. The need for research m improving coal cutting 1s therefore paramount. The enactment of Health and Safety Act in 1969 in the United States triggered the initial investigation into coal cutting mechanism and cutting tool design. The European countries were also engaged in the same area of research, however, their emphasis was in the use of wedge shaped bits. In 1981, the United States Bureau of Mines commissioned the South West Research Institute to investigate the effect of operating parameters mainly on airborne respirable dust in order to provide a healthier and safer atmosphere for coal mine workers.A research program by the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, USA was initiated to study the fragmentation mechanism during coal/ rock cutting. The research program was divided into three areas of research, namely quasi-static indentation, dynamic indentation and rotary cutting."

[On December 2, 1932, the Governor of California called upon the representatives of the mining industry of the State to attend a meeting at Sacramento to discuss ways and means of assisting is relieving some of its perplexing and extremely distressing problems, particularly the mounting cost of accidents which faces the industry with an industrial insurance rate for classification of $11.85 per $100 of pay roll, effective January 1, 1033. The significance of this fact is at once apparent when it is realized that the classification rates per $100 of pay roll for mining have steadily increased for some time, as follows: $3.91 in 1924, $5.54 in 1925 and 1926, $8.04 in 1927, $8.53 in 1928, $9.05 in 1929, $9.42 in 1930, $10.54 in 1931, $10.99 in 1952, and $11.85 in 1133. In other words, the cost rates have acre than doubled, wile statistics indicate that the accident rates nave shown an entirely different trend. At the meeting mentioned, one of the management officials sounded an effective keynote when he declared that a spade should be called: a spade. The perplexing problems of any industry can be approached best and remedies applied if that policy is kept to the front. It is appropriate to mention that high accident rates and a decrease in wages in recent years have unquestionably accounted in part for a unit cost rate, on a pay-roll basis; it also is well to explain that the policy years3 1926 to 1930, inclusive, are the years on which the accident-cost experience for 193: is based. That accident rates :lave not undergone the expected beneficial chance in California's experience is apparent in the words of a Bureau of Mines report:4]

Dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured for six rocks over the 20-to 100-megahertz frequency range by means of the susceptance-variation method. Results for both dry and moist specimens are presented and compared with data reported by others. Loss factors calculated from the data presented are important to the Bureau's study of rock fragmentation by means of dielectric heating.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential of in situ leach mining a variety of Cu, Mn, and Au-Ag ores. Geologic characterization of ore samples from laboratory leaching experiments is conducted both prior to and after leaching to assess the effects of leaching on the chemistry, mineralogy, and texture of the rocks. The identification and chemical compositions of ore, gangue, and reaction products are determined by a combination of techniques such as reflected and transmitted light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and backscattered electron imaging with scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of the desired metal in various mineral phases can be illustrated using elemental X-ray maps. The potential of reactive gangue minerals to rob Cu from leach solutions is investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Porosity and permeability are measured to determine how effectively the host rock can transmit leach solution. Textural relationships between ore, gangue, secondary reaction products, and fluid channelways are determined by petrographic examination and are documented by optical photomicrographs and secondary electron imaging. Representative sample selection is described, and several epoxy impregnation and sample mounting techniques are discussed.

In 2007, a total of 4,639 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 31.2% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,051; 44.2%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=373; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=352; 7.6%).
