The primary objective of the research was to grow aluminum borate whiskers or fibers and to determine their properties . Molten salt bath and vapor deposition methods were used for synthesis . Whiskers exceeding 25 mm in length were grown . The best results were obtained by vapor deposition and most of the data presented were determined on whiskers produced by this method of synthesis . Three different aluminum borate compositions ( 4.8A1203 B₂03 , 3.8A1203 B203 , and 2.5A120, B203 ) were identified by X- ray and chemical analyses . The aluminum borates 4.8A1203 B20, X- ray diffraction pattern was indexed . Optical data were obtained on the three aluminum borates . In addition the following whisker properties and growth factors were determined : ideal atmospheric dewpoint for vapor deposition method , near 65 ° F ; temperature range of whisker formation , 1,000 ° to 1,400 ° C for the molten bath method of synthesis , > 1,000 ° to < 1,400 ° C for the vapor deposition method ; whisker growth rates by the vapor deposition method , maximum 12 mm per hour ; raw material vaporization , 50 to 60 percent of the fluoride lost in 1 hour ; tensile strength , maximum obtained 174,162 psi ; melting points , ranged from 1,675 ° to 1,795 ° C.

Extensive Bureau of Mines laboratory testing has shown that electrokinetic densification can be an effective method for dewatering and consolidating unclassified metal mine mill tailings. The report describes results of a limited field test of this technique. Eighteen-cubic-yard concrete model stopes, 18 feet long by 6 feet deep by 56 inches wide, were filled with unclassified tailings slurry from a metal mine in the Coeur d&apos;Alene, Idaho, district. Five different tests were performed. They showed that a strong, dense, dewatered fill can be obtained in a reasonably short time using electrokinetics, with typical power consumption of 25 to 30 kW-hr/yd3 of densified fill. At present power costs in the Coeur d &apos;Alene district, this would amount to 10 to 12 cents/yd3.

The growing importance of halide metallurgy for preparing high-purity metals has stimulated research to extend halogenation reactions to the direct extraction of metals from low-grade sources. This Bureau of Mines investigation involves a pioneering study of chlorination reactions in the presence of a fluorine donor. Tin slags containing tantalum and columbium and a zircon concentrate containing a relatively high ratio of hafnium to zirconium were studied. Direct chlorination of these materials at 500° C. yields only a 5-percent conversion of tantalum and columbium or zirconium and hafnium to anhydrous chlorides. This investigation showed that small additions of calcium fluoride to the reaction increased the recovery of tantalum and columbium to 95 percent and the recovery of zirconium and hafnium to 27 percent. These results were achieved with ratios of calcium fluoride to mineral or slag of only 0.2. Silica, the major impurity in the materials studied, was found to be converted to silicon tetrafluoride during chlorination in direct proportion to the quantity calcium fluoride added to the charge. However, large additions of calcium fluoride decreased the volatility of the resulting halides of tantalum, zirconium, and hafnium. Smaller amounts of calcium fluoride also favored recovering minor metal constituents in the zircon concentrate (uranium, thorium, and rare earths).

The Bureau of Mines has demonstrated a hydrometallurgical method to separate chromium from other metals in a variety of surface-finishing wastes by precipitation with benzoate ion. The resulting chromium salt may then be converted to the hydroxide, and the benzoate may be recycled. Chromium recoveries of 92 to 100 pct are obtained.

"INTRODUCTION Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations covered by this report show that ores from Montgomery County, Ark., and Morgan County, Mo., are potential sources of barite and zinc. Fine grinding and froth flotation yielded drilling-grade barite from the former and chemical-grade barite and zinc concentrates from the latter.Samples from these deposits were subjected to a laboratory investigation to develop an economic and feasible treatment. The Arkansas ore, submitted by the Husky Refining Co., consisted of an intimate mixture of the economic mineral and quartz. Fine grinding and fatty acid flotation were utilized to effect a good recovery of a drilling-grade product. The other was a zinc-barite ore submitted by the Rocky Ford Mining Co., Stover, Mo. There was no problem in the recovery of zinc (most of which occurred as sphalerite), but the recovery of barite by flotation was complicated by the presence of gangue carbonates. Ultimately, an excellent recovery of barite was achieved with a relatively new type of flotation promoter, petroleum sulfonate.In recent years, barite has become one of the major industrial minerals as an essential ingredient in heavy drilling fluids, pigments, and chemicals. New sources of this important commodity are always interesting; thus, it is the purpose of this report to present information that may permit commercial exploitation of two deposits not in production."

A study was made of the economic factors governing silver production in the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining region, Shoshone County, Idaho. Production and other statistics were analyzed. It was concluded that if the rapid rise in the open market price that began late in 1961 continues, greater production of the metal should result from the mines of the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining region. However, the output gain would be limited, because costs per ton of ore mined would rise as production was increased beyond optimum capacity. Advances in the price of silver would increase the size of ore reserves by making some marginal ore profitable to mine and by providing greater funds for exploration projects that might result in discoveries adding to the reserves. Output of byproduct silver from Lead-zinc mining probably will not exceed 4.3 million ounces, judging from the trend from 1946 to 1961.

The performance of the U.S. economy in 1977 was similar to that in 1976 which, in turn, had been a considerable improvement over 1974-75. In 1977 real gross national product (GNP) showed a similar, but some-what slower, growth pattern compared with 1976. Real GNP increased sharply in the first quarter of the year followed by smaller increases for the remaining three quarters. With only two exceptions, the monthly unemployment rate declined or remained steady throughout 1977, falling to a low for the year in December. The inflation rate in 1977 was slightly higher than in 1976, but the rate still remained far below that of 1974-75. Total U.S. output as measured by GNP in current dollars rose 10.8% in 1977. Real GNP in constant 1972 dollars increased 4.9%, and inflation, as measured by the implicit price deflator, rose 5.6%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures increased 19.3% in 1977, only slightly below the 22.9% rise in 1976; State and local government expenditures increased 1.1 % in 1977; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%.

Blasting operations are an essential element in the recovery of our Nation?s mineral resources. The mining industry uses billions of pounds of explosives annually. The majority of blasting occurs in surface mining operations. Blasting results in the fragmentation and often the projection of rocks. Frequently, the rocks are thrown beyond the expected limits. Flyrock and failure to secure the blasting area dominate blasting-related accidents in mining, especially in surface mining. Blasting accidents in the mining industry tend to result in critical injuries or fatalities. Accident reports and information collected from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and other government agencies provide supporting evidence. According to the data collected, blasting-related accidents (in mining) were 11 times more severe than all other types of mining accidents. Blasting accidents are not unique to mining operations - the same situation exists in the construction field. In this paper the authors have compiled a list of the primary causes of flyrock and the failure to secure the blast area. In the next phase of this project, typical blasting scenarios will be reviewed which will highlight the main reasons flyrock and/or lack of blast area security occur. This will alert miners and construction workers to the current problems/hazards associated with blasting and to identify other safety measures to protect personnel.

Mainland China To Pay Japanese Company On Contract Claim. - Mitsubishi will receive $39 million from Red China, half of what was asked, for China&apos;s having, curtailed work on a 5369 million steel rolling mill at Baoshan near Shanghai. Copper Found in Chile. - Utah International Inc., in conjunction with Getty Oil Co., has discovered a cooper deposit in northern Chile. Early drilling reveals an enriched zone grading 1.2% to 2 3% copper. Chile already has tie world&apos;s largest Cu reserve base. Soviets To Aid Laotian Tin Industry. - The U.S.S.R. has agreed to help strengthen the tin industry in Laos, a client state. In the past, Laos has only produced small amounts of tin concentrate, 500 tons to 1,000 tons per year presumably shipped to smelters in Singapore or Penang, Malaysia. Under the agreement made in June, the Soviets are to supply equipment to increase the out put of tin from the Phontieu, Neng, and Nongsen mines and help Laos with the construction of a tin smelter. The U.S.S.R. itself is a net importer of tin, although a substantial producer of the metal.

A test program was conducted to determine the adequacy of molded case circuit breakers for dc electrical systems in coal mines. Mine electrical system parameters and the most severe operating conditions to be expected were determined. Tests of the interrupting capabilities of several molded case breakers were made under the worst conditions to be expected. Continuous and pulsed current carrying capability of the breakers was also investigated. Breakers from two different manufacturers passed all tests successfully. Based on the results of these tests, a set of guidelines for applying molded case breakers to dc systems has been prepared.

How can employees be stopped from engaging in unsafe work practices? It is often easier to prevent employees from performing unsafe acts through manipulations of the work environment than through various training or motivational programs. Therefore, it is important that accident prevention programs seek to identify the reasons for the unsafe behavior and to redesign tasks and the work environment (e.g., tools, equipment, physical surroundings) in order to remove employees from sources of harm and to prevent situations from arising that would prompt them to perform unsafe acts. Unfortunately, in the mining industry the work environment is often innately hazardous, rapidly changing, and difficult to predict, making it very difficult, perhaps impossible, to fully protect the employee by environmental manipulations. Therefore, it is important that effective methods be identified for influencing mine employees to work safely. Various strategies have been used to convince employees to avoid unsafe acts and/or adopt self protective behaviors. The intent of this article is to provide guidance to mine operators concerning the use of four techniques for influencing mine employees to work safely: (1) employee surveys, (2) incentives, (3) fear communications, and (4) disciplinary actions.

Before going directly to the analysis, it would be good to summar¬ize explosion-proof container approval methods. Both Magison (52) and Short (84) state that in general practice, the systems are certified for: 1. a rugged enclosure able to withstand an internal explosion but not allow explosively hot gases to escape, and 2. maximum surface temperature, with equipment operating inside, that will not ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Also, testing insures that any material in contact with the container surface will not be ignited by a hot spot. Associated with the first practice, the enclosures are inspected for: 1. a safe flange gap width, 2. a pressure increase during ignition, and 3. an hydrostatic pressure withstand level. The hydrostatic pressure level is almost always determined by a meas¬ured ignition-pressure test and is usually applied to prove the mechan¬ical design to some safety factor. Consequently, explosion-proof enclosure testing includes temper¬ature, permissible flame gap, and pressure. Specifications and prev¬ious research also can be similarly separated even though some interre¬lation exists between the flame gap size and internal enclosure pressure during an explosion. "INTRODUCTION The producing iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the Marquette and Menominee in Michigan, the Gogebic in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Cuyuna, Mesabi, and Vermilion in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. The accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year owing to stockpiling underground ore during the winter, or nonshipping, season but closely approximate each other over a period of years. This information circular supplements, combines, and continues the data contained in Information Circulars 7321 3/ and 7410 4/, including statistics for 1946 and 1947.Whereas the title ""Accident Experience"" is used for uniformity and logical indexing throughout this report, ""injury"" will be used as a general term to apply to disabilities of all degrees.During the 8-year period 1940 to 1947, inclusive, 619,054,023 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district. 5/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 117,828,939 tons, or 19.03 percent of the total, and employed approximately 9,260 men. Minnesota shipped 501,225,084 tons, or 80.97 percent of the total, and employed an approximate annual average of 12,260 men. The tons produced and shipped per man employed in Minnesota is much greater than in Michigan and Wisconsin, owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota."

The Federal Bureau of Mines provided five test materials--amosite, short-and long-fiber chrysotile, crocidolite, and nonfibrous tremolite--to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) for studies on the biological effects of orally ingested asbestos-related materials. An inter-agency agreement between the Bureau and NIEHS made possible this program to characterize these test materials. The Bureau in turn received support through contracts with the Ontario Research Foundation for the milling of amosite and crocidolite, and with the University of Maryland for microscopic measurements. The five test materials, which were supplied in quantities of 960 to 1,200 pounds each, were characterized by chemical-instrumental analysis for elemental composition, surface area, density, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mineralogy, and particle size analyses. Particle size distributions were emphasized because of the current theories relating adverse biological effects to length-width characteristics of durable elongated particles.

The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary beneficiation studies of a gold-bearing graphitic schist from Blue Hill, Tallapoosa County, Ala. The average analysis of the material was 0.08 oz/ton gold. Tabling of minus 35-mesh material recovered 83 to 94 percent of the gold at grades of 6.925 to 2.165 oz/ton, respectively. A combination of jigging and tabling resulted in a concentrate assaying 24.3 oz/ton gold and contained 87 percent of the total gold. Treatment of the material by jigging, tabling, and amalgamation recovered 86.5 percent of the gold.

Thermodynamic calculations indicate that an electrochemical cell might serve as an analytical device for determining the composition of high-purity metals. An equation, readily derived, for the cell voltage, E, is as follows: [E I RT In F NFe unknown sample T of L NFe standard] The cell, however, must come to equilibrium, must be reversible, and must have no thermal effects or complicating side reactions whose magnitude is indeterminable. This Bureau of Mines investigation explores the feasibility of an electrochemical technique for the analysis of high-purity iron. Experiments were conducted using room-temperature aqueous cells and high-temperature molten salt cells. The room-temperature cells proved to be irreversible. The high-temperature cells utilizing FeCl2 and a eutectic mixture of KC1-LiCl were reversible, but did not attain a constant voltage necessary for analytical considerations.

2. Preliminary Study - Initial Probing 2. 1 Introduction Initial probing of the mine passage is required prior to the emplacement of the sealant material or deployment of the seal checker system. Factors which are of interest in sealing and checking include a. size and condition of the mine passage b. location of the borehole with respect to the ribs c. the presence of water flows d. the proximity to an intersection The importance of each of these factors depends strongly on the sealant material. Because the sealant material had not been selected at the time of the initial probing study, a broad survey of probing techniques was conducted. The capabilities and limitations of each technique as they applied to probing through the borehole were identified. To facilitate this comparitive evaluation, Table I was prepared which lists all passage conditions which might affect the emplacement of sealant material in the passage. The most satisfactory techniques for observing each condition of interest are listed together with the effects of the observation on the sealing operation. The Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion tests of 18 commercial alloys in H3 P04 -phosphate rock or A1,03 slurry, in 10 pct HF, and in 25 pct H2 SiF6 to simulate three environments anticipated in a Bureau process to extract fluoride values from phosphate rock. Small alloy coupons were rotated in duplicate tests at 4.4 to 21 fps in the slurry at 170° C to determine rates of erosion-corrosion. At 4.4 fps the lowest rates, in mils penetration per year (mpy), were measured for Hastelloy C-276 (<20), Hastelloy B (30), and Inconel 625 (150);the rates increased at 21 fps to 55 mpy, 45 mpy, and 1,000 mpy, respectively. The corrosion rate for all alloys exceeded 40 mpy in either the equilibrium vapor or liquid phases of aqueous solutions containing 10 pct HF or 25 pct H2SiF6 at 100° C. Uniform corrosion in 10 pct HF at 50° C was observed only for Inconel 625 (22 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (43 mpy), and Illium 98 (17 mpy). Inconel 625 (0.75 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (1.3 mpy), Illium 98 (1.7 mpy), and Incoloy 825 (0.45 mpy) were attacked uniformly in 25 pct H2SiF6 at 50° C.

The extensive use of pulverized coal for fuel in industrial plants has brought to the front again a question that heretofore has been considered only a mining problem, namely, " Can coal dust be ignited by an electric arc ? " If it can be so imited, the next logical query is , "under what conditions can such ignition occur ? " In view of the new problems relating to pulverized coal installations , and because of occasional mine disasters attributed to ignition of coal dust by electric arcs , it seems advisable to review the work done by Thornton and Bowden with electric flashes in coal dust , and to report two preliminary investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines .
