The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.

This report 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Lander County, Nev., made from March 29 to April 20 and from May 9 to May 21, 1938, during which virtually all of the mining districts n the county were visited. No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

The froth foam seal topping system is part of a system for remote sealing of mine passages using flyash transported pnuematically from the surface. Making the final 5 percent of the seal with a foamed-in-place fire retardant polyurethane reduces the required flyash volume by 50 percent and provides a more reliable seal. Foam components are held at the surface under proper conditions of temperature and pressure; then conveyed down the borehole through individual hoses and mixed at the bottom with a static mixer. The polyol component is pre-mixed with fluorocarbon-12 which, when released from system pressure in the mixer, boils and causes the foam to expand. Difficulties in handling this particular foam formulation are offset by a flame spread index well below the 25 level by ASTM E-162 normally required for under-ground applications. Isocyanate, polyol (TDI) and catalyst are conveyed to the downhole package by three separate lines. Five additional lines operate the valving and convey solvent so that the mixer and package lines can be flushed immediately after foaming. The eight-hose bundle is provided in segments of several lengths so that bore-hole depths can be matched. Cast-in-place plastic cylinders hold the bundle together and transfer the weight of the hose through a special quick-release clamp to the crane's wire rope. The downhole package and hose bundle are deployed using a specially designed winch and crane system capable of borehole deployment to 1500 feet.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods of separating valuable rare-earth materials from Fe in neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet scrap. A selective oxidation treatment of the scrap oxidized the rare-earth portion while leaving elemental Fe. Magnetic and leaching procedures were tried for separating the metallic Fe and rare-earth oxides, but the extremely fine grain size of the oxidized scrap prevented recovery by either technique. The best separation of rare earths from bulk NdFeB magnet scrap was obtained by dissolution with H2S04 followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. By precipitating neodymium-alkali sulfate double salts as an intermediate that can be converted to a variety of useful products, many materials-handling and economic disadvantages found with direct precipitation with fluoride or oxalate were avoided. Iron was removed from magnet leach solutions by precipitation as a jarosite, eliminating a major disposal problem. Research was also conducted with contaminated mixed SmCo5 and NdFeB swarf. Using a flotation-leaching technique allows the SmCo5 to concentrate in the froth, while the grinding-medium contaminant sinks and is removed as tailing. The NdFeB is dissolved by H2S04 during the process.

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. To determine the nahcolite and dawsonite content in oil shales, the Bureau of Mines compared X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermal methods, and a previously published method by Smith and Young based on the selective solubility of sodium compounds. The Smith and Young method and a new method based on the weight of carbon dioxide produced by thermal decomposition are recommended for determining nahcolite. X-ray diffraction and the Smith and Young method are recommended for determining dawsonite. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis were useful for identifying other minerals in the samples.

This report describes research directed toward the preparation of chemical oxygen (02) sources which exhibited improved 02 storage and reaction characteristics when compared to potassium superoxide (KO2). The initial focus of the research was the preparation of calcium superoxide (Ca(02)2) by the disproportionation of calcium peroxide diperoxyhydrate. The Ca(02)2) was characterized by chemical, thermal, and x-ray analyses. Several methods for scaling up the Ca(02)2 synthesis process were studied. Next, the reactivity of Ca(02)2 toward humidified carbon dioxide (C02) was evaluated and was compare o that of K02 under flow-test conditions approximating those existing in portable breathing apparatus. The reactivities of mixtures of K02 and Ca(02)2 or lithium peroxide towards humidified CO2 were also studied. Finally, an analysis of two commercial, K02-based, self-contained self-rescuers was conducted to determine the potential weight and volume savings which would be possible if Ca(02)2 or a mixture of K02 and Ca(02)2 were used as a replacement for K02.

An evaluation of electrowon tungsten powder was made by comparing its characteristics with conventional hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . Electrowon tungsten powder was investigated with respect to particle size and shape , apparent density , flow rate , compressibility , green strength , and sintering characteristics . In addition , its chemical purity , absolute density , and purification by melting were determined . Significant findings were higher flow rates and better compressibility than hydrogen - reduced tungsten powder . However , the large particle size peculiar to the electrowinning process effectively prevented conventional sintering to a high- density material . The possibility of producing high - density material , using a new technique of hot swaging sheathed sintered - tungsten compacts , was demonstrated by the achievement of densities of 92 percent of theoretical .

To ensure the stability ofa tailings pond embankment, the height of the phreatic surface must be kept at or below a safe level. In this investigation, the Bureau of Mines analyzed various horizontal drain designs for tailings embankments to determine their effects on location of the phreatic surface. This report describes the investigation, and it includes 21 dimensionless graphs that can be used to estimate the drain spacing and length dimensions necessary to ensure the stability of embankments of various configurations. Analyses were based on the use of two computer codes, a three-dimensional finite-element code and a two-dimensional finite-difference code. The computer-generated results were compared with results obtained from a laboratory embankment model, other laboratory test results, and piezomet-ric data from two actual tailings embankments. Nearly the same phreatic surface locations were predicted using either of the computer codes. For one of the actual embankments studied, the predicted phreatic surface location was slightly higher than the measured location; for the other, the predicted location closely followed the actual surface trend. Phreatic surfaces of the laboratory model were slightly higher than the code-gener-ated locations, and the differences grew larger as drain length increased or drain spacing decreased.

Acids, neutral oils, and pitch were produced by distillation of low-temperature lignite tar and processed to upgrade them into more valuable products: The acids were separated from the distillate and catalytically dealkylated to produce phenol, cresol, and xylenol. Aromatic and naphthene fractions of the neutral oil were converted into phthalic and maleic anhydrides by catalytic hydrodealkylation and vapor- phase oxidation. Paraffins and n-olefins from the neutral oil were processed into alkybenzene sulfonate, a biodegradable substance. Aromatic materials from the neutral oil were also extracted with organic compounds and the extract hydrogenated under pressure to produce jet fuel. The pitch was processed by various means to change its characteristics and make it suitable for similar applications as high- temperature tar pitch, including preparation of carbon black and metallurgical electrodes. In most cases, products obtained from the low-temperature tar were examined for physical and chemical characteristics and for potential commercial utility. Information obtained from this research would be helpful if a new coal- chemical industry based on tar utilization were established.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple-hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosives charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g. velocity, attenuation, pulse), or by backcalculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties are backcalculating individual pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shown to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included and additional verifications with field results are required.

Certification tests for urethane-foam systems and techniques for apply-ing foam safely in mines are described. Fire hazard from foam exists if flame propagates beyond the ignition source or penetrates the foam. Foam that passes the certification tests can be applied on stoppings, continuous sections of ribs of relatively wide passageways (with no foam on the roof), short sections of roof such as overcasts, roof cavities, and intersections (with no foam on the ribs), and between buntons on one wall of a shaft. Foam on the ribs and adjoining roof presents a fire hazard. Stoppings covered with foam passing the certification tests are resistant to penetration of heat, flame, and smoke than similar stopping without foam. Flame propagation can be arrested by water sprays. Spontaneous ignition of foam can be prevented.

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. In the 1953 National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest, 58 teams from 9 States participated, 14 teams from 6 States in mine rescue and 47 teams from 9 States in first aid. Three of the teams were combination teams in that the same team participated in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are shown in table 1. [ ] The contest was conducted in accordance with the general rules prepared by the Rules Committee and approved by the General Committee of the National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Committee.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the ?fire door? type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self -Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brake s II by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. Gasoline and other liquid fuels may be obtained from coal by direct and indirect hydrogenation.3/ The direct process, usually termed the coal-hydro-genation or the Bergius process, was patented in Germany by F. Bergius in 1914 and developed to a commercial stage by the inventor and I. G. Farben-industrie. From a chemical point of view, the coal-hydrogenation process consists of adding hydrogen to the complex coal molecules and removing oxygen so that its chemical constitution is changed to that of petroleum, whereupon the coal substance liquefies, yielding an aromatic crude oil. In the indirect-hydrogenation process, known as the Fischer-Tropsch process (invented by Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch in Germany), coal, lignite, or natural gas is first converted to water gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This mixture of gases, in proper proportion and after suitable purification, is then passed over a solid catalyst at relatively low pressures (1 to 20 atmospheres) and temperatures ranging from 180° to 260° C. The products obtained are gasoline, Diesel oil, liquefiable gases, and paraffin wax.

Research workers From the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives in Pittsburgh, Pa., on January 22, 1975, to discuss the results of research under the Bureau of Mines Noise Control Program. The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.

The bureau of Mines analyzed data from 47 coal mine roof-fall resupport accidents that occurred from 1966 through 1974 to identify critical hazards .and problems. These accidents resulted in 62 injuries or fatalities. It was concluded that the majority of the accidents might have been prevented by observance of recommended practices and use of available technology such as setting temporary supports, adequate roof testing, etc. Additional work is needed in the following problem areas where present technology is inadequate: (1) warning of impending roof falls shortly before they occur, (2) better methods of detecting unsafe roof and ribs, (3) providing access to and temporary support of high roofs for testing and bolting, (4) reducing the noise level of stopers, (7) developing temporary roof support; that have greater stability and can be remotely installed, and (6) reducing the number of roof falls through better permanent support.

Techniques are described for recovering about 80 pct of the cobalt and nickel contained in superalloy scrap by anodic dissolution of the scrap and simultaneous electrodeposition of a pure cobalt - nickel alloy at the cathodes in an electrolytic cell partitioned by permeable diaphragms into separate anode and cathode compartments . Superalloy scrap was alternatively prepared for subsequent anodic dissolution either by melting and casting massive scrap into suitably sized anodes , by packing moderate - sized discard scrap in inert metal baskets that subsequently served as anodes , or after concentrating the superalloy portion of grinding debris , by magnetic separation to reject corundum or other abrasives , slagging any remaining abrasives from molten grindings , and finally casting the superalloy metal into anodes . In the processing , purified electrolyte -- 1 N in NiSO4 and in NiCl₂ , and 0.1 N in CoSO4 and in CoCl2 --was charged to the cathode compartments and discharged from the anode compartments at a rate sufficient to overcome the backward migration of ionic impurities from the anodes to the cathodes . Discharged electrolyte was purified by reacting it first with SO2 and next with limestone , and then recirculated to the cathode compartments , in which a 50 pct cobalt - 50 pct nickel alloy was deposited on either blanks of stainless steel or starting sheets of cobalt - nickel alloy . The process was made self - sustaining by either adding H2SO4 to the catholyte feed to throttle the rate of cobalt - nickel deposition , thereby compensating for the slower rate of cobalt - nickel dissolution from the anode and losses occurring in electrolyte purification , or alternatively , adding H₂SO4 to
