"An important function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and more efficient utilization of a natural resource. Petroleum is such a resource, and its utilization depends to a considerable degree upon its characteristics. For this reason the Bureau of Mines, over a period of years, has analyzed many samples of crude petroleum by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method 3/ and published complications of crude-oil analyses. Among such publi¬cations are several reports presenting analyses of crude oils from fields in Oklahoma. The most recent of these relates to samples from southern Oklahoma. 4/ The present paper provides additional analyses of Oklahoma crude oils, largely from areas and formations not heretofore represented in published reports. The analyses of 248 samples from 153 fields are presented individually and collectively in the tables of this report.Crude oil has been produced in Oklahoma in commercial quantities since 1891, and peak production was reached in 1947. The State's cumulative production to January 1, 1944, is, according to the American institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, 5,186,466,000 barrels. 5/ The annual production of crude petroleum in Oklahoma for each year from 1891 to 1943, inclusive, is given in table 1."

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to mineral industries' mines, quarries, and plants that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove that efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Chromium recovery from wet-blue offal trimmings and shavings can be done with substantial chemical cost gains by incineration at 600° C for 5 hr. Pretreating the offal with 0.5 M Na2C03 and air-drying prior to incineration produce Cr04 .By simply incinerating the offal, without pretreatment, an ash containing water insoluble Cr203 was produced. The Cr203 in the ash was purified by leaching with water. Chromium and crude protein were efficiently extracted from offal using 5 pct Na103, 5 pct H2S04, and 3 pct NaCl at 40° C. This procedure was effective but expensive. Satisfactory leather as to odor, appearance and shrinkage temperature was made from chromium recovered from wet-blue offal by incineration and by extraction. Chromium conservation is possible by recycling chromium liquors and by precipitating chromium from spent tanning liquors prior to combining these liquors with other tannery wastes. Combining chromium liquors with other wastes introduces contaminants that make chromium recovery and reuse difficult. Leaching sludges with H2SO4 produced marginal chemical cost gains. Leather tanned with these solutions had satisfactory shrinkage temperature but the sludge odors and iron contamination were objectionable.

This report summarizes the work done by the Koppers Company, Incorporated, in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines on the commercial evaluation of the primary low-temperature tars produced from Texas lignite in the Rockdale, Tex., plant of the Aluminum Company of America in conjunction with the Texas Power and Light Company. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in this project is twofold. First, through its cooperative agreement with the Texas Power and Light Company the Bureau has assisted in the technical design and practical operation of the prototype, externally heated, entrained-state carbonizer for producing char for electric-power production and for primary low-temperature tar. Second, the first successful operation of the prototype carbonizers employing the Bureau of Mines-Parry process on lignitic coal in 1953-54 led to the production of large quantities of primary lignitic tar, concerning which too little was known or had heretofore been published in this country.

Shales and clays from Illinois were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the 1 ,,,y of the Pennsylvanian shale units are discussed. Chemical, X-ray spectrographic and X-ray petrographic analyses were run on the samples to determine if a correlation existed between chemical mineralogic composition and expansion. Preliminary expansion testing was conducted in a muffle furnace. Rotary-kiln tests were conducted in a 16- inch by 14-foot rotary kiln. The weight of the aggregate ranged from 27 to 59 pounds per cubic foot. Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strength of the concrete using the 7-bag of cement cement per cubic yard mix, after autoclave curing for 6 hours, ranged from 2,950 to 6,750 psi. No correlation was found between the chemical, X-ray spectrographic, and X-ray and petrographic analyses and expansion, Sixteen samples made suitable lightweight aggregates in the laboratory rotary kiln. The expansion temperature range of eight of the samples was extremely narrow, and difficulties would probably be encountered in processing these materials commercially.

This paper presents current finding on truck driver average exposure to acceleration for several different manufacturer’s cab-over trucks on a variety of roads in different countries. The predominant time, for this aspect of the study has been spent in the area around London, England and Warsaw, Poland. The ECE directive 2002/44/EC has provided specific guidelines for vehicle operators 8 hour average acceleration exposure. The primary considerations have been on truck design including the air-ride driver’s seat. The truck manufacturers have produced truck cabs that have some separate suspension from the truck frame. The truck seat manufacturers have been producing air-ride suspension seats for the cab. Both of these designs have had the objective of meeting the ECE directive and providing the vehicle drivers with some degrees of comfort. This paper will provide some information on the ability of the vehicles to operate on a variety of roads and meet the objectives. Method The primary method for evaluation of the driver’s exposure has been the use of a seat pad attached to the driver’s seat. Although this sensor system provides the critical information for the driver, an understanding of the reasons for the values requires additional measurements. The initial study in England used both driver and passenger seat pads, as shown in Figure 1, as well as triaxial accelerometers mounted on the base of the seat. The latest studies used significantly more transducers to better understand the relative rotations and translations on the truck frame, the cab, and the driver. [ ]

Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. The Bureau of Mines actively conducted a well-coordinated research pro- gram during the past fiscal year on problems dealing with the production of oil and gas, transportation of natural gas, chemistry and refining of petrole- um, thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons, and the processing and utiliza- tion of incombustible helium gas. These particular reserach phases, compris- ing the presently scheduled activities, are integral parts of a broad program selected soon after the war as suitable for Bureau of Mines study, to meet immediate needs for specific information on petroleum and natural-gas problems of national scope. Important progress was made and many technical reports were finished during the year. Several reports were published on gas-condensate production problems, one giving the results of laboratory tests of relative merits of various steels and alloys for rosisting the corrosion that occurs in high-pressure gas- condensate wells. Research was continued, using the Bureau's windowed cell, to determine the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids, and an important paper on the phase relations of these fluids at low temperatures was published. An important part of the Bureau of Mines petroleum production research program for many yoars has been the engineering study of type oil fields. This year reports waro completed on the Lake Creek, Sheridan, and West Rod River fields, Tex.; the Atlanta field, Ark.; and the Bogge field, W.V. Othor fields under study and for which reports will be issued are the Carthage and Now Hope fields, Tex., and the Weber pool, Okla. Spocial studios to determine the characteristics of the oil-gas solutions as they exist within the native reservoir rocks have been in progress in the North Lindsay field, Okla.; the Elk Basin field, Wyo. and Mont.; and the Rangely field, Colo. The North Lindsay study brought to light several un- usual physical proporties of the oil as it is found in this deep-seated reservoir. For instance, its viscosity is less than that of water, and more than 2 barrels of the initial reservoir oil must be produced to yield 1 barrel of "stock-tank oil." In the Elk Basin and Rangoly fields the oil-gas solution varies in composition within the reservoir, depending upon structural location. Engineering studies were continued on woll spacing and on drilling fluids with special emphasis on obtaining uncontaminated cores, or coros for which the flushing action of the drilling fluid can be dotormined accurately. In connection with research on production of oil by secondary recovery methods, progress was made in studies of conditioning water for subsurface injoction, of input ratos and pressures for water-flooding oil sands, and of the selective plugging the more permeable mediurs to prevent or retard channel- ing of the injected fluid. The availability of fuels for all types of internal-combustion engines still is tho primary resoarch project in potroleum chomistry and refining. This rosearch program is subdivided into a sorios of problems under four main topics: (1) Raw-material studios; (2) relationships of fuel consumption, proporties, and performanco; (3) utilization of potroleum products; and (4) analytical mothods, which include chomical and physical property detorminations.

This paper is a report on the relationships between petrographic composition, chemical composition, physical properties, and thermal behavior of banded bituminous coal. It describes the relationships between petrographic composition, behavior in various laboratory tests, and carbonizing properties of different petrographic types of coal that occur in relatively thick benches in a single bed of high-volatile A bituminous coal - the Hernshaw bed of Boone County, W. Va. Thin-section microscopic analysis and free-swelling index determinations of the thin-section samples were made of a standard column sample. A standard face sample, a representative channel sample, and representative samples of two prominent petrographic benches of bright and dull coal were subjected to chemical analyses and free-swelling-index, plasticity, dilation, agglutinating, low-temperature carbonization, and BM-AGA retort tests. A float-and-sink separation was also made of part of the standard face sample. The fractions from this gravity separation were subjected to petrographic and chemical analysis and free-swelling-index, plasticity, and dilatation tests.

A project to demonstrate the feasibility of retorting oil shale by the Paraho vertical retort process was carried out at Anvil Points, Colorado during 1974 to 1976. As a part of the demonstration project, laboratory and field tests were performed to determine the physical and chemical properties of the retorted shale for use in the development of eventual full-scale disposal plans. The material which exits from the Paraho retort is classified as a non-plastic silty gravel by the Unified Soil Classification System. The particles have an apparent specific gravity averaging near 2.60 and a mass specific gravity averaging near 2.00. The material can be compacted by normal laboratory and field construction methods to about 90 to 100 pounds per cubic foot dry density depending upon the degree of compactive effort applied. The addition of moisture does not improve compactibility appreciably. When high compactive effort is applied the retorted shale is classed as impervious to water flow. The compacted retorted shale exhibits shear strengths in the same order as those observed for silty gravel soils. If the compacted material is cured (long tune simulation testing) prior to strength testing considerable strength gain can be obtained from cementing action. The amount of cementing developed is dependent upon heat treatment and other operating modes of the retort.

"INTRODUCTION A report giving experiments dealing with factors affecting the floatation of the most commonly occurring silver minerals was published years ago. At that time we could not obtain suitable samples of many of the so-called sulfo-salts of the base metals, which are generally silver--bearing and which comprise an appreciable percentage of the natural silver ores. Since Leaver and Woolf's work was published, samples of impure tennantite and enargite have been obtained, and considerable experimental flotation work has been done with synthetic mixtures prepared from these samples. During the present national emergency, research dealing solely with the recovery of gold and silver must necessarily be curtailed. However, many deposits of strategic minerals and critical base metals contain an appreciable amount of gold and silver, the recovery of which would aid greatly in recovering the strategies by taking care of a considerable part of the cost of treatment. Because of this, the recovery of precious metals should not be overlooked entirely. As the Bureau of Mines is now utilizing all of its facilities for the development of increased domestic productions of strategic and critical minerals, this is the last report not concerned primarily with such minerals that will be published until the war ends."

"Sulphur is apparently a normal Constituent of crude petroleum, but in most crudes is present in percentages of less than one-half of one per cent. Some crudes, however, contain more, and occurrences have been reported of heavy asphaltic oils with as much as five per cent of sulphur.Occurrences of Sulpher-bearing CrudesIn North America, the fields rest of the Mississippi River are almost entirely free from sulphur oils, the time oil from Northern Ohio and Indiana, and the Potrolia crude in Ontario, being practically the only ones which contain sulohur in amounts over 0.5. per cent. In the Mid-Continent district the production of high sulphur crude in general is small and unim¬portant. The two main excentions are the Healdton field in Oklahoma and the El Dorado field in Arkansas, both of which produce oils with considerable sulphur content. In the Wyoming field, one sand, the Ember Sandstone, pro¬duces a crude of high sulphur content, and it is probable that this crude rill be of considerable importance as production increases. At present, however, very little crude is produced from this formation. In the Gulf Coast conditions are irregular, some crudes being low in sulphur and others comparatively high. The same is largely true of California. The crudes of Mexico contain notable amounts of sulphur, and as they have been of great commercial importance in this country, a typical sample of light Mexican crude was selected for the present study. It is probable that the results obtained poly also (but to a lesser degree) to other sulphur-bearing oils. An analysis of this crude will be found in Table 3, also analyses of other typical sulphur-bearing crudes from different sections of the United States."

To improve communication among Government, industry, and academic researchers in the field of thermodynamics, the Federal Bureau of Mines sponsored a Workshop on Techniques for Measurement of Thermodynamic Properties in August 1979. Participants at the workshop presented 33 papers on the subjects of temperature measurement and control, general calorimetric techniques, low-temperature calorimetry, high-temperature calorimetry, galvanic cells, ionic solutions, and heterogeneous phase equilibria. A special invited lecture was presented by E. F. Westrum, Jr., on the resolution of lattice heat capacity. This Information Circular comprises the proceedings of the workshop and includes the texts of papers presented and discussion by attendees.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) defines an independent contractor as “any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a cor-poration, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine.” Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines.

The development and industry adaptation of advanced technologies have led to many important uses for bismuth and its compounds. Bismuth-base alloys are essential for manufacturing jet engine turbine blades, lenses, and various safety devices, such as fire-protection sprinklers. The addition of bismuth to iron, steel, and aluminum imparts properties to these metals that makes them useful in diversified applications. Bismuth is also used widely in medicine, pigments, and electronics. The United States relies heavily upon imports from South America and Europe to meet its demand for bismuth, which is recovered chiefly as a byproduct of lead processing.

"INTRODUCTION Coals vary so widely in their burning characteristics that all coals prepared for domestic stoker use cannot be burned efficiently on every type of stoker. The overfeed stoker, a large number of which are in use in the Pacific Northwest, operates satisfactorily when burning low- to high-ash, noncaking bituminous or subbituminous coals, whereas on the clinkering-type, underfeed, bituminous stoker both caking and noncaking bituminous and subbituminous coals are burned, generally with ash contents below 12 percent and ash-softening temperatures between 1,800º and about 2,600º F. Because fly ash continues to be one of the most troublesome factors in domestic underfeed stokers, noncaking coals especially must be chosen carefully with respect to size composition, particularly as regards the exclusion of excessive fines. Their formation as a result of degradation in storage handling or because of crushing in .the stoker worm will increase the fly-ash nuisence.Bituminous and subbituminous coals with higher ash-softening temperatures and, often, higher ash contents have not been able to enter the domestic stoker-coal market in the Pacific northwest because clinkers are not formed readily during clinker-type underfeed-stoker burning, especially in mild weather, and because of the labor and attendant inconvenience required in handling larger volumes of ash. The work described in this report was undertaken to enable mines producing coals of the kind described to enter the stoker-coal markets. The anthracite stoker selected was one that conveys the refuse from the ash pit of the furnace and deposits it into one of two covered, dust-tight disposal cans."

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Allegheny County, Pa., which rank low in the high-volatile A bituminous classification. Seven coal samples from 3 coal beds were selected for study, as follows: 2 each from the Redstone and Pittsburgh beds and 3 from the Upper Freeport bed. Selection was based on estimated reserves. The samples of Upper Freeport and Pittsburgh coals were satisfactory chemically for producing metallurgical coke. The ash contents of the samples of Redstone coal were moderately high. One of the samples of Redstone coal was high in sulfur content, and it would be difficult to upgrade to meet present metallurgical standards.

The objective was to develop and design a remotely operated temporary roof support system that provides a safe working environment between a freshly cut coal face and the last line of permanently supported roof in which to perform roof bolting activities. This system was to take the form of a retrofit package which could be adapted to a majority of the bolters currently in service. The result is an integrated piece of hardware which will retrofit onto virtually all single boom bolters by removing the drill boom and relocating and modifying the hydraulic controls. The system is composed of three basic components: a pair of cantilevered roof supports which reach forward to the desired line of support, a mast type drill unit for drilling holes and torquing bolts, and a transverse slide assembly to carry the drill from hole to hole across the entry without relocating either the bolter or the roof support. A converted bolter not only provides a much safer operation but is projected to increase the production speed as well as reduce the manpower required to operate a section.. This improvement in productivity is shown to make the job of retrofitting a bolter cost effective in less than two months and provide a potential profit thereafter. Based on the findings presented in this report it is recommended that a proto-type be built and tested in an underground coal mine to demonstrate its effectiveness.
