Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University&apos;s San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of nee&apos; water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gal¬lons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain this high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ore near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand for new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements ill the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

In 1917 the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Idaho arranged to cooperate in an investigation looking to the improvement of mining and milling methods in the mining districts of the State of Idaho, with an especial view to the wider development of the minerul deposits and greater efficiency in the treatment of the lowgrade ores of the State. This work has been made possible lnrgely through the generosity and active assistance of the mine operators, especially certain companies in the Coeur d'Alene region. As the first step in the work under the cooperative agreement it wa.s decided to gather all data possible on the various mining districts throughout the State, both active and abandoned, in order to ascertain their potential possibilities, especial attention being paid to methods of metallurgical treatment and to the solution of the many metallurgical problems in order to effect a greater commercinl saving. With this plan in view, field work was begun in the latter part of May, 1917, and was continued during the summer. E. K. Soper, formerly professor of mining, University of Idaho, and now dean of the mining department of Oregon Agricultural • College, Corvallis, Oreg., visited the mining districts in central and southwestern Idaho and also some of those in the northern part of the St.ate. D. C. Livingston, professor of geology at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, also visited some of the mining districts in central Idaho during the summer; in addition, much valuable information he had gathered on former trips to many other districts is included in this report. Credit is also due Mr. Livingston for the maps covering the State, as well as the bibliography nt the end of each chapter. Thomas Varley, superintendent of the Seattle mining experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, spent a short time in the field, principally in the mining districts in central and . northern Idaho, and made a brief visit to the southwestern districts with Mr Soper. The field work of Mr. C. A. Wright, metallurgical engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in direct charge of the cooperative work, was chiefly in the Coeur d'Alene region. Mr. Wright visited nearly all of the mining districts in the region and devoted most of his time to studying the milling methods. The results of the investigation are set 1iorth in this bulletin. The bulletin aims to give the l9Calities of the various mining districts, and the nature of the present operations and those that have been carried on in the past. The geology is discussed only in a general way, the descriptions being intended more especially to bring out the types of ore deposits and the character of the ores, a knowledge of which is essential in determining the proper treatment of the ores. The writers do not wish to imply that all districts mentioned in this bulletin were visited during the summer of 1917, for a great deal of the material has been gathered from other reports, especially from publications of the United States Geological Survey. However, it is hoped that this report will be of help to those who are interested in mining in the State of Idaho. The plan is to continue the field work and subsequently publish the results of the investigations in much more detail, with greater emphasis given the metallurgical treatment of the ores and the problems involved.

"The data in this report are the result of a detailed, microscopic study of composite samples of mill products collected over a 14 day period. The samples were collected and assembled under the direction of W. R. Lindsay, superintendent of the Anyox plant, and are fairly representative of the heads, middlings, tailings, and products peculiar to the scheme of concentration practiced at Anyox in 1930.The work was done in the Cooperative Microscopic Laboratory at Salt Lake City, Utah. This laboratory was equipped by the mine and mill operators of the Salt Lake Valley and functioned under a cooperative agreement between the United States Bureau of Mines the University of Utah. Vermiculite is the name of a group of micaceous minerals characterized by their property of exfoliating when heated and thereby increasing many times their original volume. The resulting product has excellent heat-and sound-insulating properties, is used as a lightweight aggregate, and has numerous other industrial applications. Deposits of vermiculite occur in areas of pre-Cambrian rocks of the Llano uplift of central Texas, particularly in Burnet and Llano Counties. Because of the growing economic importance of vermiculite products, the Bureau of Mines undertook a detailed investigation of several deposits in Llano County. This investigation was completed in February 1947. The work comprised topographic surveys of five deposits, drilling with a 4-1/4 inch Parmanco power auger drill, and laboratory evaluation of samples. 342 drill holes, aggregating 4,905.5 feet, were completed, and 377 samples were taken. Laboratory evaluation of the vermiculite comprised expansion tests on both crude and beneficiated samples. The products obtained were compared with commercial-grade vermiculite from Montana.

Although there are exceptions, oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. When these ores are of high enough grade they can be smelted; indeed, some rather low-grade ores of this type have been smelted at a profit because of their fluxing value. In the past, when these ores could not be smelted, they either were not treated or were treated at low efficiency, generally by cyanidation. The need for thorough investigation of the problem was therefore evident for some time before the writers began their research. The problem of treating manganese-silver ores seems to have been recognized first about 35 years ago by C. W. Goodale in applying pan amalgamation at Tombstone, Ariz. He attributed the low extraction of silver to the fouling of the mercury by manganese rather than to the presence of a refractory compound of manganese and silver. Although definite knowledge as to the cause of the poor extraction of silver was lacking, a more or less effective preliminary treatment, that is, a chloridizing roast, was applied.

The workshop on "Cyanide Effluents from Mineral Processing&apos; was held on February 2-3, 1982, at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop was sponsored by the minerals industry, supporting industries, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Utah Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute, College of Mines, University of Utah Prior to the workshop, a Working Paper was prepared and delivered to the participants. This paper was used as a guide during panel discussions and forms the basis for this proceedings document. The workshop focused on use of cyanide as it relates to the gold and silver mining industry and the froth flotation processes employed by mineral mining companies. Its intent was to discuss "state of the art" technology and provide information pertinent to cyanide use in the minerals industry. No attempt was made to advocate regulatory limits or set policy governing the use of cyanide. The principal topics of discussion included- (1) the chemistry and use of cyanides; (2) control and treatment of cyanide mining wastes; (3) toxicity of mining wastes; (4) fate of cyanide in the environment; and (5) the analytical chemistry of cyanide.

Active placer mining in Alaska began near Juneau in 1880, but the first gold rush did not start until 1896; then the discovery of the Klondike brought gold seekers from all parts of the world. A few of the newcomers were experienced miners, but the majority knew nothing whatever of placer mining. Even those who were placer miners of much experience found entirely new conditions, notably frozen ground, that presented many difficult problems. As a result, numerous methods of mining and of thawing frozen ground were tried. From these trials the practice described in this bulletin has been developed. All known placer fields in Alaska have been mined to some extent, and some have been virtually exhausted. In most districts, however, there remain large quantities of low-grade gravel and also some small isolated areas of comparatively rich gravels which could not be successfully mined because of adverse physical conditions. These districts are now the scene of most placer mining, including dredging, hydraulicking, drifting, mechanical methods of open-cut mining, and ground sluicing (or booming) followed by " shoveling-in."

Titanium forms several compounds with oxygen and also is able to dissolve interstitially about 33 atomic percent of oxygen. Starting with titanium dioxide, reduction becomes increasingly difficult as oxygen is removed; and the final step, be reduction of the titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions, is by far the most difficult. The possibility of reducing titanium oxide, or of purifying titanium containing oxygen, by treatment with certain more volatile metals has been a subject of considerable interest. Theoretical appraisal of the limitations of this possibility, however, has been hampered by lack of adequate information on the thermodynamic properties of the titanium-oxygen solutions. The purpose of the present work was to remedy this difficulty by expanding the thermodynamic knowledge regarding these solutions. The experimental work involved three types of calorimetry and furnished the following information: (1) Heats of formation of 11 titanium-oxygen solutions, in the range of 0 to 10 wt.-percent oxygen, were determined at 298.15° K. As a byproduct, an improved value of the heat of formation of rutile was obtained, which, in turn, led to improved values of the heats of formation of the lower titanium-oxygen compounds. (2) Low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15°K in were determined for 2 representative titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions. (3) High-temperature heat-content data were obtained for 2 titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions to about 1,600° K.

[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Co., jointly, conducted the first experiment undertaken in the United States in underground gasification of coal in place, at Gorgas, Ala. Milton H. Fies, manager of coal operations, Alabama Power Co., proposed the cooperative investigation to Arno C. Fieldner, chief, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines; and assisted in supervising the experiment. The objectives of the experiment were to determine whether coal in place could be burned successfully and whether the burning could be controlled; the effect of the fire on the coal bed and the overlying strata; and the yield and quality of gas that could be obtained.

This Bureau of Mines study investigated molten salt electrorefining for beneficiating low-grade, high-carbon ferrochromium products which can be readily produced from domestic chromite concentrates. A second objective was to refine commercial ferrochromium into low-iron chromium products. Electrorefining of both types of ferrochromium in molten CaC12-NaCl-CrC12, CaCl2-MgC12-CrCl2, or KC1-LiCl-CrCl2 electrolytes produced chromium-iron products with virtual elimination of other impurity elements and some lowering of the iron content, Over 90 percent of the chromium present in the feed materials was recovered. The electrodeposited products were upgraded further by magnetic separation techniques into chromium containing less than 5 percent iron. The technical feasibility of preparing a premium chromium product from a low-grade, high-carbon ferrochromium made from domestic chromite was demonstrated. Chromium virtually free of carbon, oxygen, and silicon from high-carbon ferrochromiums was produced. In addition, the amenability of three commercial grades of ferrochromium to electrorefining and magnetic separation for preparing chromium metal containing less than 5 percent iron was determined.

This bibliography is the first report of a Bureau of Mines research project on thermoelectric materials. Interest in such research has increased because of recent success in the design of commercial products, including generators and refrigerators, using the principles of thermoelectricity. This success made possible by the discovery of semiconductors that have much higher [effincies] than the metals and alloys formerly studied. Thermoelectricity is a term that includes a large number of phenomena relating heat to electrical energy. However, the moat important applications arise from two effects discovered by Seebeck in 1822 and by Peltier in 1834. When pieces of two unlike materials are joined at their two ends to form a continuous circuit, both of these effects may be observed. If the two junctions are maintained at different temperatures, an electromotive force known as the Seebeck voltage is generated. If, on the other hand, a current is made to flow through the circuit, the junctions of the materials will be found to differ in temperature. This phenomenon is called the Peltier effect.

The results of a laboratory investigation of coal cutting mechanics and noise is presented. These experiments were performed using a linear cutting apparatus that operates over a broad cutting speed range. The influence of several coal cutting parameters on the noise, force, productivity, and specific energy associated with linear cuts is ascertained. Some basic theoretical aspects of coal cutting mechanics and noise generation are discussed, and the results of the laboratory experiments are used to Formulate analytical models of the coal cutting forces and noise. The analytical model For coal cutting noise is then generalized to account for the more important effects of rotary cutting. Based on the generalized model, an estimate of the sound pressure level at an operator&apos;s position is made for a typical continuous mining machine. It is concluded that by employing linear rather than rotary cuts, using deeper depths of cut, slower cutting speeds, and more efficient cutting tools, it is possible to reduce the level of coal cutting noise, as well as Provide benefits to other important areas of underground health and safety.
