In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

[The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. METALLURGICAL thermochemistry of titanium is a broad subject and (if data were available) could include a wide variety of topics. The present report is restricted to extractive metallurgy and to substances and reactions that bear upon the magnesium, sodium, and hydrogen-reduction processes employing titanium tetrachloride. The aim has been to present enough data so that the reader not only can check: the calculations for the reactions discussed but also can conduct related calculations if he so desires, without recourse to other compilations of data. The subject matter divides naturally into two parts-the selection of the data to be adopted and the application of these data to pertinent metallurgical reactions.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

RECORD production of marble, kaolin, scrap mica, and talc high-lighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1962. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in scrap mica, third in the production of bauxite and native asphalt, and fifth in iron ore. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by mining and processing of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cement, which together comprised 73 percent of the total value of production, compared with 72 percent in 1961. Other important industries were the production of crude petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron, Southern Cement Co., Southeastern Electric Generating Co., Alabama By-Products Corp., and U.S. Pipe & Foundry Co.

[The oil-producing district, "Southern Oklahoma," is generally considered to be that part of the: State lying; southwest of the Arbuckle Mountains. It includes six counties: Carter, Cotton, Garvin, Jefferson, Kiowa, and Stephens. At present cost of the oil is produced from formations of Pennsylvania age. The individual crude oils resemble those produced in other parts of the State, except that the sulfur content is rather high. This report is a continuation of a study of Oklahoma crude oils3/ being made, by the Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. Analyses are given of 27 samples obtained from 21 fields in the southern part of the State, end the physical and chemical characteristics of these crude oils are discussed briefly. Analyses of crude oils from other Oklahoma areas and publications in which these analyses may be found are listed in tables 2 and 3.]

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays, and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels while using a 12.2 m (40 ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1 m (20 ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complemented the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut as compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

To reduce the respirable dust generated by auger-type continuous coal mining machines. The Approach: Use water sprays close to the cutting bits on the auger so that coal fragments are thoroughly wetted as they are formed to prevent dust dispersal into the ventilating air. How It Works: The "wet auger" system of dust control uses water sprays distributed on both shafts of auger type continuous miners. This approach has been tested underground by personnel of the Bureau's Twin Cities (Minn.) Mining Research Center on a Wilcox Mark 20 continuous miner, in a cost sharing contract with Buchanan & Sons Coal Company, Inc. Personnel of the Interior Department's Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration collected dust samples and analyzed the data. A test machine was fitted with six sprays on each auger (see Fig. 1). Water flow rates from 8 to 12 gpm at pressures from 90 to 120 psi, or about 8 gallons per ton of coal mined, were required. This report presents a discussion of perforance parameters for electronic or active hearing protectors that will meet the needs of underground coal miners. This information is incorporated into a proposed set of specifications that can be used to judge the suitability of a particular electronic hearing protector for the coal mine application. Acoustic and electrical tests were performed on a developmental model of an electronic hearing protector built by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This model showed only a slight reduction in speech intelligibility which was traced to poorly matched components and in particular to the transducers. Tests of alternative components showed the Knowles BL-1671 microphone to be suitable for this application because of its performance and extremely small size. The Roan-well H-143/AIC earphone was found to have a good frequency response but has the disadvantage of being rather bulky which causes a slight degradation of a low frequency attenuation of the hearing protector. A satisfactory installation of these components in a hearing protector muff was demonstrated and tested. Results of tests of several methods of controlling the sound level under the hearing protector muff showed that a simple diode clipper circuit can be used with only a negligible loss in speech intelligibility for normal-hearing listeners. A commercially available active hearing protector, the British-built ACOS A-9000/2 was examined. This hearing protector provides sound level limiting through a saturating amplifier. Preliminary tests have shown that the performance characteristics of this commercial unit meet many of the proposed specifications so further testing and evaluation should be performed to determine its suitability for use 1n underground coal mines. The recommended test of intelligibility for electronic hearing protectors and other communication systems as used in a coal mine setting is the Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) developed by House et al. in 1965. The suitability and method of administering this test are discussed.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.

Mine fires pose a serious hazard to the health and safety of mine workers. They occur regularly and their effects can be devastating. Objective Provide mine safety personnel, MSHA, and equipment manufacturers with a comprehensive, up-to-date, and well-documented database of metal and nonmetal mine fire incidents in the United States from 1950 to 1984 and perform a statistical analysis of these incidents. The data-base is designed for use by mine engineering and safety personnel to aid in determining especially hazardous practices or conditions.

The primary purpose of the Bergius (hydrogenation of coal) and Fischer-Tropsch (hydrogenation of carbon monoxide) processes is the production of synthetic liquid fuels. This objective is of importance in insuring an adequate supply of motor fuels and lubricating oils in the United States. In the urgency of the basic research and process development work on synthetic liquid fuels, the possibilities for the production of synthetic chemicals inherent in these processes have hitherto received little attention in this country. However, the by-products, as well as the primary products, from the Bergius and Fischer-Tropsch processes are rich source materials for organic chemicals. The overhead oil from liquid-phase hydrogenation of coal, for example, contains benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, aromatic solvents, about 20 percent tar acids (largely phenol, cresols, and xylenols), and 3 percent nitrogen bases. Wax, alcohols, and acids are by--products of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In addition, techniques have been developed which make possible the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, acids, aldehydes, and other oxygenated organic compounds. These chemicals are more valuable on a unit basis than gasoline. Because of continued rapid expansion of the plastic, resin, lacquer, and solvent industries, larger amounts of many of these chemicals will be needed in the near future.

The entropy values at 298.1° K. for the elements and inorganic compounds, on which sufficient data were available for calculation in 1931, were discussed in a previous publication (96).3 Since that time the specific beats at low' temperatures of many more inorganic substances have been determined, and considerable advances have been made in the realms of spectroscopy applicable to the determination of thermodynamic properties. Moreover, a critical study of the existing vapor-pressure data made by the author (98) furnishes entropy of vaporization results suitable for obtaining approximate values of the entropies of a number of gases from the entropies of the solids or liquids. Consequently, it appears worth while at the present time to supplement the former publication, giving the new values now obtainable and making such revision in the older values as the data warrant. The methods of calculating entropies were discussed in previous publications (96, 98) and will not be repeated here. ENTROPIES AT 298.1° K. FOR INORGANIC SUBSTANCES In the following pages, the same arrangement is followed as in the previous publication (96). All entropy values are expressed in 15° gram-calories per degree Kelvin per gram-formula mass of substance. The figures given for gases do not include the effect of nuclear spin, as is nearly universally customary at present. The estimates of accuracy in the case of the values obtained from heat-capacity data apply only to the existing measurements and to the necessary extrapolations as they are made. It is assumed usually that the substances are in such an energy condition at the lowest temperatures reached in the specific-heat measurements that the usual normal type of extrapolation may be made. No allowance is made for error in this assumption. The recent work on Gd2SO4. 8H2O and FeC13 illustrates the difficulties that may arise in obtaining the entropies of some paramagnetic substances. Miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize underground mining hazards; consequently, illumination plays a critical role in miners? safety. Some hazards are located in the miners? peripheral field-of-view (10 degrees to about 60 degrees off-axis) or on-axis (0 degrees). The objective of this research was to determine if there were visual performance improvements when using solid-state cap lamps with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as compared to incandescent light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. Recent research has indicated that an increased short-wavelength content of the spectral power distribution of LEDs relative to incandescent lamps improves peripheral visual performance for low-light (mesopic) conditions. The visual performances of nine subjects were quantified by measuring the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting floor objects located on axis and at ±20 degrees off axis. The objects were located near field (1.83 meters) and far field (3.66 meters). Upon presentation of the objects, subjects would count and point to each object using a red-laser pointer. The object detection response time and number of missed objects were recorded. The results of the visual performance comparison for an LED, a prototype LED, and an incandescent cap lamp are presented. There we no missed objects when subjects used the LED-based cap lamps but, there were three missed object occurrences when subjects used the incandescent cap lamp. The mean detection time when using the incandescent cap lamp was 55.3% greater than the prototype LED cap lamp and 43.5% greater than the LED cap lamp. It can be inferred from this data that the spectral distribution of LED-based cap lamps could enable significant visual performance improvements as compared to incandescent cap lamps1.

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

Acute vibration causes vasoconstriction in naïve human subjects1. Vibration-induced decrease in skin perfusion has also been reported in the rat-tail vibration model 2. After vibration exposure, rat-tail arteries demonstrate vacuoles in smooth muscle cells, similar to that caused by pharmacological vasoconstrictors3. This study addressed the effects of different frequencies, durations and patterns of vibration on lumen size and vacuole formation using the rat-tail vibration model in male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g). Methods The different groups were: 4-hr continuous vibration at 30, 60, 120 and 800 Hz; continuous exposure durations of 5 min, 1 hr and 4 hr at 60 Hz; and 4-hr cumulative exposure of 60 Hz delivered intermittently in cycles of 10 min on and 5 min off. Acceleration was set at 49 m/s2 r.m.s. for all frequencies. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage driven by a B&K motor (4809). The sham control animals were also placed in the vibration apparatus but not vibrated. Room temperature was controlled at 25 ± 1°C. Ventral arteries from proximal tail segments 7 were immersion fixed in aldehydes, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned (0.5 µm) for morphological analysis. Vascular lumen sizes were measured as the percent ratio of the lumen perimeter to internal elastic membrane length using Image J software (NIH).
