So far as is known , there is no complete bibliography on sampling, therefore , this one should be of value . In it are nearly eleven hundred references , some dating back 30 years , on sampling at mines , mills , smelters , power plants , pumping stations and refineries . For convenience , there are included a few references to methods for sampling such materials as leather belting in mills , salt impregnated soils , and mine waters . All the important technical journals , - including some in foreign countries- and engineering society publications , also mining and metallurgical text - books , have been studied for anything concerning sampling , and while it is not claimed that every important reference has been listed , the bibliography is fairly complete . The arrangement is alphabetical by authors ' names , and the references are numbered serially in the crder that they appear in the bibliography . Anonyous references are listed under the name of the journal in which they appear , and are numbered like the references bearing an author's name . Patents are grouped in their numerical order , without index nu.bers . Under the heading , " U.S. Bureau of Mines Publications " , are listed all publications of the bureau that deal with sampling . While the serial number is omitted , these same references , of course , have serial numbers where they appear in the list arranged alphabetically by authors .

Tracor MBA under a contract to U.S. DOI Bureau of Mines designed, developed, fabricated and demonstrated a conveyor belt service machine. It is self-contained, battery powered, rubber tired and capable of handling, storing and transporting conveyor belting, wire rope and associated structures for sectional conveyor belts. While moving the tail section to its next position the machine discharges the belting, wire rope and belt structures. The belting is elevated and separated to provide for the insertion of the structures with minimum expended effort. A hydraulic system provides the power for steering, braking, winding or unwinding under controlled tension the belting and wire rope, operating a load-bed slat conveyor, raising, lowering and locking connection hitches and powering external hydraulic tools. Also, a pneumatic system is available to operate air impact tools. The service machine, with its present components can function in coal seams as thin as 48 inches, double wind conveyor belting 42 inches wide, 400 feet long, load or unload 3/4" wire rope on two separate reels and is controlled by two operators. A complete belt move using this machine requires only four workers. Successful underground demonstrations were conducted in coal mines located in West Virginia and Kentucky.

This paper is the fourth of a series of preliminary papers on smelting in the lead blast furnace.4 The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation and to correlate these conditions with operating factors, furnace behavior, and metallurgical losses. The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

An inexpensive slow-speed data acquisition system has been adapted to digitally record multiple parameters simultaneously at intervals of 15 seconds. The system was built for use with standard soils testing equipment to automatically record load and displacement parameters at predetermined instants in time. Simultaneous readout is achieved by the use of special signal conditioner and sample-and-hold circuits which read the multiple signals simultaneously and hold them until the slow acting system can print out. Three channels of a 10-channel system have been converted and found to operate successfully during a series of direct shear tests. A unique feature of the system, which significantly reduced its cost, is the power supply units. Dummy circuits are used to maintain a constant power demand during sampling) thus eliminating the need for a costly power supply with rapid response characteristics. The entire system, having an overall accuracy of 0.25 percent, was put in operation for a cost under $2,500.

This report describes the results of investigations into four specific areas related to trolley wire power distribution systems in coal mines. These are: 1. Partially insulated (shielded) trolley wire 2. High-speed insulator fault detectors 3. Dual-wire trolley systems 4. Insulator failure indicators. Prototype devices or designs were developed in each area. In addition, a brief survey was made in an attempt to assess the Future of mine trolley systems, and data was collected and reviewed in an attempt to analyze the nature of trolley wire related accidents. Other options for decreasing the risks associated with trolley systems that arose .during the study are briefly described in appendices. These include insulating equipment and miners from return and/or energized conductors and use of a segmented trolley wire with local control of current delivering capability.

A new concept of roof support by "sonic pin-setting" is introduced. Initial experiments indicate that this method could introduce tremendous benefits for the coal mining industry by making roof-bolting a faster, safer, and more economical operation. A theoretical model is presented for describing the process and an experimental machine was built. The present testing results are included.

[Sales of explosives - permissible explosives5/ other high explosives, and black blasting powder - in the United States during the calendar year 1937 reached a combined total that slightly exceeded the quantity sold in 1936. A larger output was reported for permissible and other high explosives but a smaller for black powder. Production of the three classes of explosives totaled 404,744,294 pounds, more than 3 percent over 1336. The total quantity produced included 49,579,441 pounds of permissible, 288,924,253 pounds of other high ex- plosives, 36,403,950 pounds of black powder in pellet form, and 23,836,550 pounds of black powder in granular form. Sales of granular black powder declined 26 percent compared with 1936 and of pellet black powder 12 percent; gales of permissible explosives increased nearly 4 percent and of other high explosives 10 percent]

Based on the investigation by the Bureau of Mines, tungsten is the principal metal found in the study area; gold and silver were the primary metals found at one property. Tungsten occurs in tactite zones formed near contacts of calcareous metasedimentary with granitic intrusive rock. Gold and silver were found primarily along quartz veins in granitic rocks; small amounts of those petals also occur in the tactite zones. Since 1856 approximately 200 lode claims or relocations have been recorded, mainly in the southwest corner of the study area. Tungsten production in this part of the area has been inure than 7,800 short ton units (70,800 kg) of tungsten concentrates; about 4,800 short ton units (43,500 kg) were from the Mud Lakes Mine; and 3,100 short ton units (27,200 kg) were from the Rainbow Mine 1/.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effect of ground water control on the dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes. Two storage impoundments were constructed. One impoundment was surrounded on three sides with a series of well points (shallow vertical wells) to lower the ambient water table and the second impoundment served as a control. Ground water was pumped from the area surrounding the test impoundment for a period of 490 days. A constant pumping rate of 60 gal/min resulted in a water table drawdown of 13 ft, approximating the bottom of the impoundment. At the end of the test period percent solids in the test impoundment was 35 pct, while in the control impoundment percent solids was only 26.8 pct. Percent solids of greater than 30 pct is required for capping and final reclamation using fertile overburden.

This report presents the results of a search for viable-self-drilling roof bolt concepts, detailed development, design, and manufacture of such bolts that drill their own holes, and testing in the laboratory and in the field in two different coal mines of three self-drilling roof bolts. Three new types of bolts were designed and tested, which drill their own holes and then anchor in continuous operation. These were a spring-actuated mechanical expansion shell, a slot and wedge, and a self-contained resin anchor bolt. Such bolts when fully developed for mine use would allow safer and remote installation of ground support and increase productivity. Recommendations are given for further work to improve drilling and anchorage performance.

The performance of commercially available portable instrumentation for detecting nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide was evaluated. Length-of-stain detector tubes from several manufacturers were included in the study. The instruments were evaluated in atmospheres with 50-and 80-percent relative humidities at 75° F and containing test gas concentrations of 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the threshold limit values. The results from the gas analyzers were correlated with the known contaminant concentration by calculating and plotting an estimated line of regression, confidence limits, and correlation coefficient for each detector system. An increase in the relative humidity from 50 to 80 percent at /5° F changed the instrument response to the contaminants. The uncertainties in detection precision reported are for the observer-instrument system. The main difference or inconsistency in toxic gas concentrations determined with length-of-stain tubes resulted from the observer's interpretation of the results rather than from a predominant difference in the tubes.

A mineral resource survey of the 940-square-mile (2,434 km2) Hells Canyon study area, which includes Hells Canyon Wilderness, Snake and Rapid Wild and Scenic River's, and adjoining roadless lands in Oregon and Idaho, indicates the area is highly mineralized. Thirty-four lode deposits within the study area have resources totaling about 31 million tons (28 million t) containing copper, silver, zinc, gold, and lead; another 42 lodes, not sufficiently exposed to allow resource estimates, are believed to have mineral potential. The most important deposits are copper-, silver-, zinc-, gold-, and lead-bearing volcanogenic occurrences, followed by silver-and copper-bearing contact replacement (tactite) deposits; other lode occurrences are relatively unimportant. The most important placer deposits occur at Dry Diggins; placers along the Snake River are small and scattered. The study area has extensive deposits of limestone and sand and gravel; it has little potential for energy resources.

The Duchy of Luxemburg, which between 1735 and 1815 was French, adopted as its basic mining law the French Law of April 21, 1810, and an Imperial Decree of January 3, 1813. The Luxemburg Government later supplemented and modified this legislation by the laws of June 12, 1874, April 30, 1890, and May 10, 1898, which, with article 36 of the Constitution, are to be taken into consideration in a complete survey of mining legislation. The Sunnyside single-entry project pioneered the use of single entries for longwall development in this country. During the 10-year course of the project, an immense amount of information was gathered. Over three miles of entries were observed primarily through instrument groupings placed in strategically located areas or "rooms." Nearly 1,200 instruments were monitored to gain information on the behavior of coal entries during development stages and through the mining of two longwall panels. This was one of the most extensively documented projects undertaken by the Bureau, The data gathered has a great potential for scientific research especially in the area of longwall mining. This Bureau of Mines report presents the ground control data gathered, in the form of computerized plots. Roof-to-floor deformation and load on cribs and roof bolts make up the bulk of the data, which is presented as load or deformation versus time. The plots are organized, generally, by the three main entries involved and, specifically, by the individual areas or rooms in those entries. No major attempt will be made, in this paper, to analyze the data other than to identify its source arid its history.

This final report documents the work dune by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume. Phase I of the contract was devoted to performing an in-depth assessment of electromagnetic noise measurements taken by several contractors and other investigators, and then defining a new noise measurement program and instrumentation system tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

This report summarizes a study conducted to determine the state of the art of various rock removal systems and their capabilities. The objective of the study was to determine if currently manufactured equipment can adequately accomplish rock removal in surface mine reclamation applications. Evaluations of state reclamation regulations, with regard to topsoil rock content, were made to determine the rock removal requirements. The major categories of equipment studied are rock pickers and rock rakes. The impact of rock removal implementation on the reclamation operations is discussed in detail.

The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. Methane and other hydrocarbon gases, byproducts of coalification, are emitted from coal at widely varying rates and often present ventilation problems during mining. The air in some coal mines apparently contains no methane. To determine if coals from mines which bid no history of detectable gas emission contained adsorbed methane, samples of coal at the shaft bottom and at an active face were obtained and placed in sealed metal cylinders. The atmosphere around the coal was sampled and analysed by gas chromatography. Methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and butane were found to have been desorbed from these coals. Hydrogen and helium were also detected. An estimate of the amount of residual gas per ton A coal indicated that coal samples from the active face generally contained more adsorbed gas than coal samples obtained from the shaft bottom, although in both instances the total amount of gas was relatively small.
