This report describes operations at the Rosiclare Fluorspar Works of the Aluminum Co. of America at Rosiclare, Hardin County, Ill. The works include the Fairview mine, the fluorspar mill, and related facilities. The publication covers exploration, development, mining and milling practices, mine-drainage problems, and other activities and is presented as part of the Bureau of Mines series of publications on mining and milling practices in various parts of the United States. The Rosiclare fluorspar area, for its size, has been the largest producer of high-grade fluorspar in the United States and probably in the world. The vein system in this area is over 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, and ore has been found as deep as 900 ft.

The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, has established a testing adit on the Government reservation at Mount Weather, Virginia, to facilitate research on the fundamentals of mining under actual metal-mining conditions. A number of sites in several Eastern States were investigated, but Mount Weather was selected because the rock seemed best suited for rock drilling and other mining tests and because the ground was already owned by the Federal Government, the site having been acquired in 1902 for use of the Weather Bureau. The testing adit has an advantage over an active metal mine for certain investigations because variable conditions affecting any particular research problem can be controlled and maintained in a fixed status, whereas in an operating mine this seldom is feasible. Operations were begin in September 1936, with a crew of four laborers under a resident engineer. The laborers were recruited from nearby farms, and although they had no previous mining experience, they have developed into satisfactory miners.

[Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCR's) have been widely utilised as fire-resistant dielectric coolants; in electrical equipment used in mining applicants, including transformers, capacitors, electric motors, and electromagnets. In addition, PCB's have been used in hydraulic fluids and heat-transfer fluids and are present in many oil-filled transformers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently banned the manufacture of PCB's and equipment using PCB's, and imposed strict requirements on the continued use and disposal of existing PCB equipment. This manual discusses the EPA requirements, suggests ways to decrease the risks resulting from continued use of PCR equipment, and surveys the non-PCB equipment that is available as replacements for the PCB electrical equipment presently used in mines.]

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate the optimum design for a rock-breaking explosive charge that could be fired unconfined in a gassy or dusty coal mine without the danger of igniting the flammable atmosphere. Charges of various shapes, with and without cavities, were tested in a gallery using 3-by 3-by l-ft concrete blocks as simulated boulders. For these tests the optimum charge, in terms of cost, weight, and convenience in handling, consisted of a flat l-1/2-lb charge of permissible explosive seven-eighths of an inch thick and 7 in in diameter encased in a l/2-in thick layer of fine salt (NaCI). This work demonstrated that it should be possible to produce an inexpensive explosive rock-breaker charge that would be safe to use in underground coal mines.

Measurement and sampling of diesel particulate matter in mine air presents a challenge due to the complexity of the diesel aerosol. The results of a series of tests carried out by the National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, in an underground mine were used to evaluate several measurement methods that are currently used to characterize particulate matter emitted by diesel-powered equipment. This paper presents an overview of these techniques and examples of the results along with a discussion of the advantages and information gained by each technique. The measurement methods discussed include particle size measurements using a scanning mobility particle sizer, total particulate matter measurements using a tapered elemental oscillating microbalance, a size selective sampling method for workplace and personal exposure assessment and a size-selective high volume sampling method for carbon analysis.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). Longwall mining has gained the reputation as being the safest extraction method in underground coal mines. However, one of the most difficult tasks associated with longwall mining is moving the face once a panel is completed. Based on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fatality reports since 1996, longwall face recovery operations have claimed the lives of 5 U.S. miners and have resulted in numerous injuries. Recovery operations can be hazardous because they involve moving large pieces of equipment in very confined spaces. They are also conducted in highly stressed ground conditions due to front abutment loads generated by panel extraction. Shield removal is the most hazardous operation during face recovery because miners are constantly exposed to the unpredictable gob edge. To protect the miners, one or more walking shields, cribbing and/or other supplemental roof and standing supports are typically employed as breaker line supports as each shield is removed. At the Harris No. 1 Mine in southern WV, mobile roof supports (MRS’s) have been used in lieu of traditional walking shields on 17 face moves since 1997. MRS’s are shield-like support units mounted on crawler tracks and are commonly used during room-and-pillar retreat mining operations. For longwall recovery, the two biggest advantages that MRS’s have over traditional walking shields are that they are remotely controlled and are highly maneuverable. MRS’s have contributed to safer shield recovery and shorter move times at the Harris No. 1 Mine. This paper will address both the safety and the operational issues associated with MRS usage during shield recovery. It will also discuss new developments, including the use of the inherently safer battery powered MRS’s, which have been recently certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

"INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the high-grade manganese ore used in the United States is imported from overseas. During the early part of the recent World War importations of manganese ore were seriously threated, and it appeared that it would be necessary to utilize low-grade domestic ores to the fullest possible extent. Among the processes that appeared to offer the best possibilities for beneficating low-grade domestic oxide manganese ores, which ordinarily are net readily amenable concentration by ore-dressing methods, were those involving leaching with sulfur dioxide. The Bureau of Mines therefore investigated the amenability of a large number of such ores to sulfur dioxide leaching.Several sulfur dioxide processes for beneficiating low-grade oxide manganese ores have been proposed. 3/ One of these, based on a patent by Van Arsdale and Maier, 4/ was used recently in a plant constructed to treat 1,000 tons per day of 20-percent manganese ore from the Three Kids deposit near Las Vegas, Nev. 5/ In this process the ore slurry is leached with sulfur dioxide gas, the resulting solution is evaporated to crystallize the manganese sulfate, the crystals are decomposed thermally to produce high-grade manganese oxide and regenerate sulfur dioxide, and the manganese oxide product is nodulized. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a process 6/ in which a suspension of the ore in calcium dithionate solution is leached with dilute S02 gas, the manganese is recovered from the resulting solution by a simple lime precipitation, and the precipitate is nodulized or sintered to form a high-grade manga¬nese oxide product."

The work described was conducted to develop standards for the application of wire rope clips on wire rope. These standards include optimum number of clips and clip nut torques for wire rope sizes 1/4 through 2-1/4 inches, when used for forming an eye attachment in wire rope. Wire rope test specimens with clip attachments were load tested on tensile testing machines to determine an effective combination of clip nut torques and number of clips for each size of wire rope to develop efficiencies above 90 percent of the catalog ultimate rope strength.

The The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is continuing to investigate the behavior of fully grouted roof bolts in the weak roof rock of the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). This paper describes the results of three studies: • A series of 24 pull tests of bolts installed fully grouted and overcored to leave 12 inches of grouted bolt. The tests compared the pull-out performance of offset-head roof bolts with that of standard 5/8-inch bolts; • A second series of 24 tests that compared the pull-out loads obtained by bolts installed with 1 ft of resin (a Short Encapsulation Pull Test or SEPT) to that of fully grouted bolts overcored to leave only 12 inches of grouted bolt, and; • An investigation into the pressures generated during the installation of fully grouted resin bolts. All of the bolts installed and pulled were overcored and removed from the roof after the pull tests to allow inspection of the resin. The first study found that there was no significant difference in pullout load between the offset-head bolts and the standard bolts. The second study, comparing the SEPT bolts and the partially-overcored fully grouted bolts, indicated that SEPT can significantly underestimate bolt anchorage grip factor, suggesting that the SEPT is a conservative measure of actual bolt performance. Significant loss of resin to cracks in the roof was observed in the bolts overcored in the SRCM. The third study explored one possible explanation for the resin loss, high pressures generated during bolt installation. These tests employed bolts installed in strain gauged steel tubes. The results confirmed that significant pressures (greater than 4,000 psi) can be generated during bolt installation. The results of the pressure tests, combined with the observations of resin loss in bolts installed in the SRCM, suggest that under some circumstances resin loss and under-encapsulation could take place and lead to degraded bolt performance. Glove fingering was observed in all recovered bolts to various degrees. The limited comparative data suggested that the effect of glove fingering ranged from slight to moderate. Complete mixing of the resin was observed on all of the 40 bolts recovered (28 fully grouted and 12 SEPT). Australian and U.S. resins were compared and the Australian resins were observed to have much smaller catalyst compartment areas and lower resin viscosities. These differences are suggested as potential explanations for occasional resin mixing problems noted in Australian resin bolt installations.

The object of this study was to determine the economic feasibility of hydraulically transporting Sandow (Tex.) lignite 100 miles and dewatering and thermally drying the transported lignite to a surface-dry condition. The most important factors involved in the feasibility of hydraulic transport, are the degradation incurred during transit, the length of the line, and the cost of alternative methods of shipment. In pipeline tests in which roughly 75 miles of hydraulic transport was simulated the percentage of minus-325-mesh solids increased from about 1 to 41 percent for both lignite and bituminous coal; in the micron sizes the coal fared considerably better than the lignite. Such degradation, even though it enhances flow through the pipe-line, severely aggravates the dewatering problem on lignite. Cost studies indicated that continuous vacuum filters offer the most economical means of dewatering minus-1/8-inch material. Surface moisture, if high, must be removed by relatively expensive thermal drying.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Itmann No. 3 Mine, located near Mullens, West Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 250-volt-dc and 550-and 950-volt-ac machinery in two longwall panels was measured and is reported. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. It is recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape, and the noise data is later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.

At the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of coal from important beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. The principal objective of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data to aid in determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's reserves, particularly of coking coals. Such information is also important from the standpoint of conservation, because it facilitates the selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable product with a minimum loss of coal to the rejects.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Chief Consolidated Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The concentrator adjoins the town of Eureka, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. The Chief Consolidated, Eureka Lilly, Plutus, and Grand Central mines, all of which are owned or controlled by the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., are the principal sources of milling ore. The ore is transported from mines to mill by railroad. Although all the mines are within 3 miles of the mill, the railroad distance varies from 1 mile to 12 miles.

This report, summarizing the results of two studies sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents information on the types of mobile machines used in surface coal mines in the United States, and the amount of noise to which miners are exposed. Data consist of a calculated value of the probability of noise overexposure caused by specific equipment. These data are extrapolated to estimate the number of overexposed operators. Bulldozers were identified as the major contributors to noise overexposure, and the report presents results of a Bureau-funded program on the feasibility of providing retrofit noise control on bulldozers.

This report summarizes the results of research into the areas of the fragmentation and entrainment of Airborne Respirable Dust (ARD). The objectives of this program were four-fold: first, to review the present state of knowledge regarding ARD; second, to expand this state of knowledge through the identification of hypothetical microscopic mechanisms by which the coal is fragmented and the dust becomes entrained; third, to specify the informational requirements to verify or nullify these hypotheses; and fourth, to relate experimental techniques that will produce that required information. Additionally, insights are provided regarding potential methods of extraction and/or treatment which may reduce the concentration of ARD.

Since successful industrial lignite-burning equipment was developed in 1925, the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for power plants has increased. It has proved an entirely satisfactory fuel for generating power and can be burned efficiently by various methods.4/ Equipment to fire pulverized lignite was installed and used successfully at the Trinidad Station of the Texas Power & Light Co. as early as 1926. The lignite was predried in steam-heated grid driers before pulverizing.5/ This method of firing was used later in the Comal Station of the San Antonio Public Service Commission.6/ Both stations, however, have since been converted to use other fuels. Units for pulverizing and drying lignite are relatively new in the lignite-consuming region of North Dakota. The air which sweeps the pulverizer and transports the pulverized product to the burners is preheated to dry the lignite during pulverization. The first unit was installed in 1948 in one of the two boiler units of the Crookston Station, Otter Tail Power Co., Crookston, Minn.7/ In 1951 the 30,000-kw. W. J. Neal Station, Central Power Electric Cooperative, Inc., Voltaire, N. Oak., was designed and constructed for firing pulverized lignite exclusively. It is the largest lignite-fired, power-generating station in North Dakota. The 44,000-kw. Lewis and Clark Station of the Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., Sidney, Mont., is fired by a similar pulverizing system. Operation of this plant was begun in October 1958. At Fergus Falls, Minn., the 53,500-kw. Hoot Lake Station of the Otter Tail Power Co., also using a pulverized lignite-firing system, began operating in September 1959.

This study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of steel reheating practices in burning natural gas on the amount of silicon required to prevent the formation of copper on steels containing up to 1 wt-pct Cu. Formation of copper, which causes surface hot shortness, was readily prevented by as little as 0.3 wt-pct Si and by 2 vol-pct excess oxygen in the furnace atmosphere when reheating steels containing up to 0.8 wt-pct Cu. Up to 0.8 wt-pct Si content and careful control of reheating conditions were necessary for steels containing 1 wt-pct Cu. Best conditions for these steels were reheating to 2,200° F (1,205° C) in burning gases containing 2 vol-pct excess oxygen, and then to higher temperatures in gases of 6 vol-pct excess oxygen. Slag and mold wash were not detrimental on steels reheated for 8 hr by a soaking-pit-type furnace schedule, but they were problematical on steels heated for 2 hr by a pusher-type furnace schedule. The effect of silicon contents on scaling rates also was determined.

This is one of a series of instruction guides developed to help instructors present health and safety training courses to workers in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. This course is intended for training those, usually the safety officers, who perform surveys for inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas. The handbook entitled ?Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Metal and Nonmetal Mining and Processing Work Areas? is used as a manual for the course and as a prime reference when performing the actual surveys or interpreting the sampling results. There are six experiments for the students to perform during the course to familiarize them with the sampling devices routinely used during the surveys.

The Haldane gas-analysis apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines is patterned after the device developed by Haldane 4/ and differs from it only in structural modifications that have been added to facilitate operation and simplify construction. The apparatus was developed to permit determination of carbon dioxide, combustible gases, and oxygen with a degree of accuracy not attainable with apparatus of the types ordinarily used for the analysis of fuel gases, flue gases, and similar mixtures. The Haldane apparatus is used by the Bureau of Mines chiefly in the analysis of air samples collected in coal and metal mines and other underground workings and is applied also in the analysis of many other types of gas mixtures when accurate determination of certain constituents is desired.
