Southern Cross Operations produces approximately 120,000 ounces of gold each year. Since the establishment of the CANMET Experimental Mine in Val d'Or, Quebec in 1991, research activities in rock fragmentation have been carried out not only in the underground laboratory but also in production mines in the north-west Quebec region. Among the instruments available for rock fragmentation, the Kodak EktaPro 1000 Motion Analyzer (also called the high speed video system) has been one of the most useful tools for monitoring blasts in both underground and open pit. This system is capable of recording events at rates from 50 to 12,000 frames per second (fps). The buffer memory has a capacity of storing 2050 images. To use this system in the underground, a steel box was made with a bullet-proof glass in the front to protect the camera. The processing and recording equipment are placed in an aluminum case which can be located about 30 m away from the camera via an extension cable. For each blast monitored, high frequency geophones and accelerometers were used to monitor ground vibrations and give a timing reference of the explosive detonations to correlate with the observation of the captured images.

During the summer of 1980, a field project was carried out to determine the stability of the beautiful and dramatic natural limestone pinnacles (locally termed "Hoodoos") at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, when subjected to ground motions and airblasts resulting from proposed strip coal mine blasting. The concern arose from environmental considerations associated with the proposed development of a large coal strip mine which would approach within 4 miles of the park. The pinnacles range up to 150 ft in height and are quite slender, producing a fragile appearance. The remoteness and ruggedness of the area required a field camp, and 4-wheel drive vehicles, helicopters, and snowcats for support. Portable magazines were necessary to store the more than 7 tons of blasting agents and explosives required. In conducting the blasting, great attention was paid to environmental impacts. In the field, a target pinnacle was selected and instrumented with mechanical strain gages, and research seismographs that required helicopter placement.

The Bureau of Mines fired seven test blasts in a 22-ft bench of limestone, screening the material to investigate the influence of explosive type and between row delays on fragmentation. Four 4-hole, single-row test shots were conducted evaluating dynamite, ANFO, emulsion, and a 60-40 emulsion-ANFO mix. Three 12-hole shots, with three rows of 4-holes, evaluated delays between rows of 24, 36, and 120 ms. Accurate in-hole electronic delays were used, firing within 1.5-ms of the nominal delay. All seven shots had a 6- to 7-ft burden, 10-ft spacing, with a hole diameter of 3-1/2 in fired on a 12-ms delay between holes in the row. The tests were instrumented with strain gauges grouted in the burden region examining stress wave and gas pressure effects. Fiber optic probes were used to confirm timing and to obtain detonation velocities.

BH Note: This price list stresses the point that the number six strength cap should be used with all high explosives. It’s interesting that duPont chose to continue to supply the lesser strength caps – but lowered the price of the #5 or #6 to be closer to that of the #4 and #3. There were imports of the lower strength caps at the time that had to be competed against, hence the price reductions. Another interesting point on this price list is the noting on the “Red Cross Explosives” page that these explosives reduce the danger incurred during the operation of thawing. As noted many times in these articles, this problem was not to be solved for about another 16 years or so.

The software helps engineers to generate back analysis by blast, bench, pit, month and many other ways, in a timely friendly manner. Therefore, we can catch business opportunities and improvement for the drilling and blasting process.

Progressive cavity type pumps are widely used by commercial explosive manufacturers for pumping water gel, emulsion and emulsion / ANFO blend explosives. Tests by explosives companies and investigations into incidents have shown that this type of pump can develop dangerously high temperatures when operated deadheaded or dry. [i.e. with no flow of product through the pump.] In some tests and incidents, explosion or detonation of the explosive (or residual explosive) in the pump has resulted.

In the current context of heightened concerns with explosives security, there is significant interest in technological controls to improve security. It is important to be able to control what is fired, by whom, where and when. This paper describes research Orica has performed to investigate and test biometric systems to address the question of "by whom". The goal of this research is to incorporate the most suitable biometric system onto the 'blaster' unit of an electronic initiation system. This approach will ensure that only authorized personnel can initiate a blast involving electronic detonators. Requirements analysis: we initially explored many different biometric technologies to evaluate them against the requirements, including security, usability, ruggedness, size, form factor, privacy, and operational temperature range, This analysis identified chip based fingerprint sensors as the best candidate. Development of prototype units: in order to test the identified sensors, we modified standard, commercially-available, electronic blast initiation units ("blaster") to incorporate a fingerprint reader. Testing and evaluation: Biometric We conducted a biometric scenario evaluation in order to determine: 1) security level (measured by false accept rate (FAR)); 2) usability (measured by failure to enroll (FTE) and false reject rates (FRR)), and to 3) discover environment specific issues and challenges (such as temperature, humidity, dirt, or those related to the usage patterns of the user group). Tests were conducted at quarry sites in eastern Ontario, Canada. Results show rates of: FAR= 0%, FTE= 1.67%, FRR= 28.81%. Overall, these results suggest that this fingerprint biometric technology has a good level of usability in this application of electronic blast initiation control.

In many cases hours of time were wasted because the licensee or permittee, who had basically done everything right, was not prepared for the audit. In these cases, required documents were scattered, personnel were unprepared and no plan was in place. This paper will provide some simple steps to avoid these embarrassing delays. A list of common violations is also provided.

The need to adequately quantify cracking in structures in the vicinity of blasting activity becomes more important each year. This urgency comes about through a growing number of complaints and lawsuits between the various parties involved, i.e., operator/owner, government, and complaintant. It is felt that existing rules and regulations (mainly based on peak particle velocity of the soil or rock adjacent to the structure in question) fall short of such quantification and lead to confusion in adequately assessing structural damage.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Drilling and blasting are the initial and the major impact on primary fragmentation and later material flow characteristics. The heterogeneity of rock mass has a great impact on materials’ mechanical properties and plays a significant role in rock fragmentation by blasting. In this work, a numerical model for sublevel caving based on 3D Voronoi tessellations was developed to section rock mass into arbitrarily shaped regions for modelling the heterogeneous rock mass. A coupled finite element and discrete element method was employed to investigate both the fragmentation due to blasting and the gravity flow of ore in a heterogeneous orebody. In the coupled model, the caved waste rock was modelled with loose discrete particles while the orebody to be blasted was simulated with bonded particles. The detonation of explosives was described with a particle blast method and a finite element model was used to model the remaining orebody. The results indicated that the fragmentation at the upper part of the ring is coarse while it is fine at the lower part of the ring. The heterogeneity of rock mass induced some boulders after blasting.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME), a non-profit safety and security organization founded in 1913, is known for its industry best practices, Safety Library Publications (SLP), some of which have been incorporated into rules by regulatory agencies. The IME developed the first commercial storage, quantity distance (Q/D) table titled “The American Table of Distances” (ATD). It was developed by IME’s legacy association in 1910 and was originally based on observations of structural damage from 117 accidental explosions involving small to very large amounts of explosives, primarily dynamite and black powder. In 1930, the IME published a book, compiled by Ralph Assheton, called the “History of Explosions on Which the American Table of Distances was Based”. The distance in feet in the ATD were founded on the measurements at which inhabited buildings sustained substantial structural damage from the accidental detonation of explosives. For example, minor damage such as window glass breakage and the “shaking down” of plaster was not considered substantial structural damage. Other damage to property that was readily repairable was also not considered “substantial.” It was concluded that unless some integral portion of the building was damaged, the occupants would not be subjected to serious risks.

The Hercudet™ non-electric delay blasting cap system has exhibited outstanding performance and economic results in surface work. The versatility inherent in the system, which allows the combining of the built-in cap delays with the tubing delay (i.e.: the travel time of the gas reaction through the tubing), has resulted in outstanding blast results. Examples of blast patterns used, details of the blast design process, and recently-developed methods of use of Hercudet for surface initiation of detonating cord downlines are given in the paper.

One method for small arms disposal is the use of a deactivation furnace or explosive waste incinerator. There are numerous hurdles a facility typically encounters to get the furnace or incinerator fully operational and permitted. For example, one Department of Defense installation was in the permitting process 7 years, which included numerous facility upgrades and modifications. This paper will discuss the technical approach for proactively addressing permitting issues and requirements and will identify potential pitfalls to avoid as well as ways to reduce costs. For example, when determining the waste profile, the facility should forecast its treatment needs (taking into account the net explosive weight limits of the furnace/incinerator) and then classify the wastes into "chemical families" based on the type and composition of the wastes. One waste from each family should then be selected for potential inclusion in the trial burn. Modeling the waste disposal can help to narrow down the number of wastes requiring characterization during a trial burn, as well as the number of analyses.

This paper presents blast casting design variables that have been developed and are currently being used at the High Power Energy mine in West Virginia. The shot specifications are summarized in Table I. The two active casting pits were designed with casting in mind and as a result are better designed and more efficient. About 55% of the overburden material is effectively cast and clean up is done by a bulldozer, front-end-loader, and trucks. This results in a 15X decrease in the cost of coal production.

This paper analyzes the blast design for lime stone quarries of two major cement plants in Pakistan. The production blast of these quarries was resulting in excessive boulders production. At some instances, the rate of boulders production was approximately 10%-15% of the main production blast i.e. if a round of main blast gave around 4000 tons of material; almost 400 to 500 tons of that material was in the shape of massive boulders. This gave rise to increased operating costs requiring boulders collection, drilling and secondary blast.

Explosive demolition of concrete has been accepted as a safe and economical means of concrete removal for many years. I imagine that the early concrete blasters were experienced rock blasters who applied their knowledge to just another formation. Since a concrete foundation is generally located in a congested area, the owner is willing to accept the higher costs of mechanical removal,rather than promote "a new idea" to his management. This attitude is rapidly changing,making it possible to use the advantages of explosives in more congested locations.
