Polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers (CnEm) render quartz hydrophobic while feldspar remains hydrophilic. As a result quartz can be separated from feldspar in small frothless flotation devices such as the Hallimond tube. The separation can be accomplished at room temperature at pH < 7 and C16E33 concentrations between 10-5 and 10-4 M for quartz particles smaller than 0.4 mm. No separation is observed when feldspar ore containing about 60 % of feldspar and 40% of quartz is subjected to flotation in a laboratory flotation machine. The reason for the lack of separation is a low hydrophobicity of quartz in the presence of polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers and high intensity of mixing in the flotation machine. The flotometric tests showed that the contact angle of quartz in monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol solutions is less than about 18 degrees and depends on the structure and concentration of the ether and the pH of the system.

This paper reviews the status of automated applied mineralogy today and describes the history and fundamental theoretical and practical bases underpinning the development of automated systems. Details are given of the technical challenges that were faced in creating the new technology and in applying it to a range of applications. In recent years, automated mineralogy has become established as an essential enabling technology for the reliable acquisition of statistically sound comprehensive mineralogical and metallurgical data. This has had a revolutionary effect on the industrial use of such data in the study of geology, mining and mineral processing. Previously, using manual methods, it was not feasible to attempt this work because the large data sets required could not be assembled in a realistic timescale. There was a reliance on individual expert mineralogists and this was not scalable. The speed, reliability, detail and repeatability of the modern automated measurements has now made this type of analysis routine. Automated Applied Mineralogy has come of age! More than 100 systems have been installed around the World. Automated mineralogical analysers such as QEMSCAN® were originally developed as diagnostic metallurgical tools to improve mineral processing plants using samples drawn from plant surveys, bench and pilot-scale tests. They were used mainly for the assessment and auditing of size fractions of mill products, such as concentrates and tails. Subsequently, they began to be used for concentrator design and optimisation where ore characterisation was used to help understand the relationship between the feed ore and its subsequent behaviour in the plant. They are now widely used to measure exploration cores and drill chips from drilling programs to predict eventual metallurgical performance. Ore samples can be classified into metallurgical, as well as geological types, by combining mineralogical features in the ores with metallurgical properties related to grade control, separation, comminution, flotation and leaching behaviour. Three-dimensional block models of ore deposits are now being created based on processing response in addition to geological and mining properties. The development of automated systems began in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There were many technical challenges. Mathematical theories of randomness, sampling theory, image analysis and stereology were developed to ensure sample representivity so that meaningful information could be obtained. Sample preparation, presentation and measurement methods were developed to ensure that the random sampling was preserved during the measurements. Methods of automatic measurement and mineral identification evolved from the use of electron microscopes, fitted with backscattered electron brightness and energy dispersive X-ray detectors. Operational procedures were required to ensure that these instruments could accommodate a large number of samples and operate unattended for long periods of time. The new technology was progressively applied to a range of commodities and applications and new analysis methods, such as liberation measurement, were needed for metallurgical interpretation of mineralogical data.

The interaction of sphalerite- and galena-adapted Bacillus polymyxa (B. polymyxa) cells with sphalerite and galena has been investigated through adsorption, electrokinetic and flotation studies. The amount of sphalerite-adapted cells adsorbed onto sphalerite and galena is found to decrease with increase in pH. On the other hand, the adsorption density of galena-adapted cells onto galena shows a feeble maximum around pH 8, and the amount adsorbed is marginally higher in the pH range of 8 . 11.5. In the case of sphalerite the amount adsorbed is higher in the pH range of 5 to 7. The adsorption density of both the adapted cells is higher for galena vis-à-vis sphalerite. Electrokinetic studies indicate significant surface chemical changes on the chosen sulphide minerals and the bacterial cells, consequent to microbe-mineral interactions. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite could be preferentially floated from galena, using galena-adapted cells, but not with the sphalerite-adapted cells. The cells adapted to galena assay a higher polysaccharide content and are more hydrophilic, while the sphalerite-adapted cells have a higher protein content and possess greater hydrophobicity. Transmission electron microscopic studies have provided evidence in support of the differences between the cell surface characteristics of sphaleriteand galena-adapted cells. Possible mechanisms of interaction between the minerals and the bacterial cells are discussed.

With the increasing applications of the Chinese metal magnetic liners, the requirement for their technical specifications has become stricter and stricter. It is necessary to deeply analyse the metal magnetic liners in order to improve their reliability and economics. The key issue of metal magnetic liners is magnetic forces: their attractions to mill shell and protection layer. Mathematical models were developed using finite-element analysis software and systematic simulation analyses of the two most critical indexes of magnetic liners were performed to find out the most important parameters and their effect on the liner?s characteristics. The relationships between magnetic forces and installation gaps, thickness of permanent magnets and thickness of protection layer may be used to guide the design of metal magnetic liners for ball mills in order to achieve good economic indexes.

The results of the test work of four treatment options of three refractory gold-pyrite and gold-arsenic flotation concentrates are presented. These concentrates were obtained during the concentration of primary ores of large gold deposits. It was found that ultrafine grinding of refractory flotation concentrates did not increase the recovery of gold during subsequent cyanidation. The elimination of sulfur and arsenic during oxidative roasting is 99 per cent. 88-93 per cent of gold is recovered by cyanidation from calcines. After biooxidation of the flotation concentrates with a mixture of strains Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans 88-91 per cent of gold is recoverable by direct cyanidation. The recovery of gold from flotation concentrates by pressure oxidation is 88-99 per cent. These results suggest that gold recovery is important but the following strategies would have an impact on a plant performance and would be considered when developing an option to treat refractory ores: capital and operating costs, ore reserves, mine location, infrastructure and qualified staff. "Three primary drivers are setting the trend for base and precious metal processing . they are: continued low real base metal prices, environmental concerns, and continued high prices for PGM.s. Low base metal prices are increasing the search for economies of scale and company consolidation as well as the development of some hydrometallurgical technologies. Environmental concerns are pushing for continued reductions in SO2 emissions and hydrometallurgical technologies. The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

Utilizing thioglycolic acid (TGA) as a template and using structure-guided design, a molecular modelling approach has been used to design and screen appropriate dispersant for chalcopyrite. A series of organic dispersants based on a TGA substitution with hydroxyl and amino and sulfonic functional groups have been examined on chalcopyrite surface. 20 organic depressors of chalcopyrite have been investigated to study the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) of chalcopyrite depressors. For the chalcopyrite surface, depressor containing carboxyl and sulfonic group is generally stronger than the depressor containing hydroxyl group. Increasing the number of hydrophilic group can effectively enhance the inhibition. Increasing the number of Solidophilic group does not necessarily lead to enhanced inhibition ability; steric factor is one of the important factors to affect the interaction. Extension alkyl carbon chain length cannot enhance the interaction of depressors. Isomers principle as well as applies to the chalcopyrite depressor molecular design. Flotation verification tests further confirmes the accuracy of the molecular simulation. Through the Computer Aided Molecular Design (CAMD) technology, we can save enormous time and resources to design novel surfactants. This research and application will play a great significance role in sulfide flotation.

"The small recovery of Ag, often in the order of 50%, by traditional flotation and leaching process strategies is closely related to the complicated and heterogeneous nature of Ag-bearing minerals with Ag typically being associated with numerous minerals within any given ore-body. Moreover, grain sizes may be extremely fine with micron-scale common. In order to design cost-effective Ag-bearing mineral flotation and leach recovery strategies it is firstly necessary to characterise the speciation of Ag and its correlation with other elements, e.g., Cu, As and Sb, within the ore matrix and process streams. The traditional QEM-SCAN analytical approach can prove problematic for some mineralogies due to difficulties in recognising degrees of crystallinity, polymorphs, complex solid solution series, high value trace element mineralogy, very fine grained materials; and the requirement for a comprehensive data base. Moreover, there is difficulty ‘seeing’ either surface films or surface contaminants which can both lead to poor flotation performance. There is therefore clearly a need to develop confirmatory and complementary approaches when these uncertainties arise. Synchrotron X-ray microprobe analysis provides a powerful tool for the mineralogical characterisation of finely segregated heterogeneous Ag-containing materials. These measurements enable comprehensive characterisation of the Ag-bearing components using synchrotron microprobe X-ray fluorescence mapping (µ-XFM), X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (µ-XAS). Further analytical strength is provided by principal component analysis of laboratory ToF-SIMS data which enables the statistical identification of correlated surface species enabling examination of surface chemical characteristics responsible for mis-reporting of Ag containing components within flotation streams. We describe the application of these techniques to a selected Ag-containing feed and tail and demonstrate how these compliment and extend traditional analytical methodologies."

"A typical low-grade of high sulfur bauxite fr contains 54.71% Al2O3, 11.35% SiO2 while the ratio of aluminum and silicon was 4.25, and harmful components such as Fe and S graded 7.3% and 1.33% respectively. The ore is characterized by complex mineral compositions, fine dissemination of particle size of pyrite and diaspore, low desulfurization efficiency, and difficult separation of aluminum and silicon. In order to improve the degree of concentration, recovery and desulfurization efficiency on the basis of process mineralogy studies, the floatation behavior of high sulfur bauxite in the process of desulfurization and desilication were studied through laboratory tests and pilot plant tests. KEYWORDS high-sulfur bauxite; low grade; flotation; desulfurization;desilicication INTRODUCTION In order to solve the selection problem of bauxite mine area, we carried out technological mineralogy, laboratory test, small-expansion Dalian test to solve the problem of the refractory ore. Main research contents and conclusions were presented as followings :(1)Process mineralogy research shows: the main mineral components include diaspore, kaolinite, chlorite, pyrite, limonite. (2)Batch flotation tests indicated that slime can be dispersed well during desulfurization floatation when Na2CO3 was used as modifying agent. (3)Poilot plant tests shows that Batch flotation tests results are correct. 2?PROCESS MINERALOGY 2.1 Chemical Composition of Ore 2.1.1 Spectral Analysis of Sample The results of the semi-quantitative analysis of X-Ray -fluorescence spectra of the original ore are shown in Table 2-1. The results of spectral analysis show that the main components of the sample are O, Al, Si, followed by Fe, Mg, Ti, S and so on, while the content of other elements is very small. The value is Al, and maybe Ti, for bauxite, while Fe and S are unfavorable elements, and Si and Mg and Ca are the main impurity elements."

The performance of Knelson Concentrators (KC) used in gravity gold circuits often rely on manufacturers recommendations for selecting operating parameters such as, fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. These parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics such as, size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. Particles entering a KC experience a centrifugal acceleration due to the high bowl rotational speeds. The required centripetal force to maintain a circular orbit is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the Bagnold?s force arising from the particle/particle collisions. When the fluidising water flow rate is low particles move towards the outer rim of the bowl forming a packed bed within the grooves. On the other hand, if the fluidizing water flowrate is high the bed expands and some particles would move towards the centre of the bowl and gets carried to the tailings stream, thereby reducing the amount of material retained within the grooves of the bowl. Based on a force balance on a particle captured within the KC, a criterion which can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It has been shown that this criterion may be used to demarcate the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state depending on the fluidizing water flowrate. By identifying the conditions for the optimal expansion of the bed comprising different constituent mineral particles, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. It was also observed that the accumulation of valuable mineral in the bowl takes place by the displacement of the gangue particles in the bed by the incoming heavy mineral particles. The kinetics of this segregation process was also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum which could be used to identify the optimal cycle time. "The proportion of refractory sulphide ores and concentrates in world gold mining industry is growing every year. Pressure oxidation of these materials (in autoclave) allows to oxidize gold hosting minerals. Traces of halides and pseudohalides present in the slurry liquids contribute to formation of complex gold compounds. Sorption-active carbon present in ores leads to irreversible adsorption of complex gold compounds and their loss. The objective of the research is to study gold extraction dependence on the concentration of chloride-, cyanide- and thiocyanate-ions in the slurry liquids during pressure oxidation. Double refractory flotation concentrate of the Bakyrchik deposit was used for the testwork. The research was planned on the basis of a full factorial experimental design with additional refining experiments. Ligand concentrations (0 – 1000 mg/l Cl-, 0 – 600 mg/l CN-, 0 – 1200 mg/l of SCN-), temperature (200 – 240 °?) and retention time (1 – 6 h) were used as variables of pressure oxidation process. It was determined that sulfide minerals oxidize much faster than ""organic"" carbon. Under the conditions of T = 240 ?C, t = 2 h, sulphide sulfur oxidation was 95.6%, while ""organic"" carbon oxidation was 46.1 %. Each of the examined ligands has a significant adverse impact on gold extraction. Analysis of the experimental data demonstrated that with a high degree of confidence (R2 = 0.883) gold extraction does not depend on the ligand type, but only on its concentration and the ""organic"" carbon oxidation degree. In case of complete oxidation of ""organic"" carbon, the presence of the ligand (L = Cl-, CNS-, CN-) in the liquids at a concentration of up to 20 millimole/L does not significantly affect gold extraction. The assumption that the main factor of preg-robbing in ???-CIL treatment of double refractory concentrates is the natural ""organic"" carbon sorption-active to gold has been confirmed. INTRODUCTION In recent decades, placer gold mining has been gradually declining and hardrock gold mining, including ""refractory"" gold mining, has been growing all over the world, as well as in the Russian Federation (http://www.miningworld.ru, 2015). One of the main reasons why gold ores are refractory is gold adsorption on natural carbonaceous materials (""organic carbon""). Only a few technologies are suitable for processing such ore concentrates (a significant amount of gold is contained in refractory hardrock ore both in Russia and worldwide) (Vorob'yev-Desyatovskiy N.V., Yepifanov A.V., 2014)."

"We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko at al. (1970) technique to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates. It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin aqueous film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system.This behavior was explained by the initial strong adsorption of positively charged interfacial complexes from the mixed surfactant system at the air/solution interface followed by adsorption at the silica interface. It was also shown that the chain length compatibility between the anionic and cationic surfactants controls the strength of the interfacial complex, determining an inhibition in the thin film rupture and dewetting of the film. The rupture mechanism was explained by an earlier established heterocoagulation mechanism between the positively charged air/solution interface and the solution/silica interface which remained negatively charged. The formation of the interfacial complex at the air/solution interface was confirmed by using surface tension data."

"In this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 - 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 - 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 - 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration.For gold recovery from the pregnant solution, the trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) was used in this investigation as an extractant to extract gold from thiosulfate solution without pH and other adjustments. The effects of gold concentration, pH, ammonia, thiosulfate and cupric ionic concentrations, extractant and diluent concentrations and retention time on the gold recovery were investigated. It was found that 180 mol/m3 extractant diluted with n-octant at O/A ratio of 1:1 could extracted the 100% of gold in 0.6 ks from the thiosulfate solution at the optimal leaching conditions. The 100% gold stripping could be achieved with 10% thiourea solution."

"Besides valuable metals of Cu, Sn, WO3, Zn, there are S, Ag, CaF2, In and so on in a complex ore deposit in south China (which belongs to Hu Nan Shizhuyuan Non-ferrous Metal Limited Liability). Although it proved reserve amounts to 3.5×107 ton, its crystal character limits its utilization in large-scale. It features complex relationships between valuable minerals, finest crystallized particle size, low-graded valuable metals (Cu 0.30%, Zn 0.5-0.7%, Sn 0.2%, W<0.1%). If only tungsten minerals are considered, it means WO3 grade is too low (the cut-off grade of WO3 is 0.1% in China). Only Cu and Sn minerals are recovered from 2006 and Cu recovery is less than 70%, Sn 15-20%. Other valuable metals of W, Zn, S and CaF2 were lost in the tailings. To make good use of the ore, the technology of fully recovering Cu, Sn, W, Zn, CaF2 and rare metals are in urgent need. After systematic researches, the flow sheet of "bulk flotation of Cu-Zn minerals at first, then Cu-Zn separation, then recovering sulphide by flotation, then recovering iron minerals by magnetic separation, then bulk flotation of Sn-W minerals after desliming" is developed. Furthermore, specific Sn-W collectors of BK411 and BK412 are applied into the processes and better indexes are obtained. The industrial indexes are listed as followings: the content of Cu, Zn, Sn, WO3 of ROM ore is 0.31%, 0.65%, 0.13%, 0.03%; Cu and Zn recovery are 82.23% and 37.79% respectively; 63.76% of Sn and 34.34% of WO3 go into the Sn-W bulk concentrates. Economic benefits are remarkable."

The beneficiation study of low quality pyrophyllite is conducted to enhance the value of it by selective grinding. In mining stage, the main gangue mineral is quartz, and the content of quartz in ore has an adverse effect on the quality of pyrophyllite. Using the huge difference in hardness between quartz and pyrophyllite, the selective grinding is accomplished using stirred ball mill. As a result, a finer pyrophyllite particle can be easily separated from coarser quartz particle by simple size classification, and the content of Al2O3 of fine particle smaller than 45um increased largely. It means that the pyrophyllite particle is ground selectively compared to the quartz particle, and the quality of pyrophyllite is enhanced.

At the present time, methods of mining and coal preparation produce tones of coal fines. The removal of water from these fines is necessary for economical and technological reasons. Supplementary processes that utilize different physical and chemical methods have been developed to in-crease the productivity of mechanical dewatering processes. Researches have shown that chemical reagents used along with conventional systems diminish moisture and increase the capacity and the yields of the dewatering method. In this study, the parameters of the vibrating screen (incline, frequency, feeding rate and screen size), the effects of the application of additional vertical mechanical vibration and surface active reagents (CTAB, SDS, Umectante B-70 and Kerosene) were investigated. At the end of the optimization experiments, 61.0% moisture was decreased to 42.3%. By keeping optimum conditions con-stant, the experiments have been conducted to determine most effective reagent. 41.2% moisture has been obtained with 5 g/t CTAB at the normal pH of the pulp, which were 7.25. By using vibrating screen with combination of the vertical vibrating mechanism, CTAB gave the best result of 40.7% moisture. Finally, the effect of increased surface area of the screen has been investigated and de-creased the moisture level to 38.7%.

Vanadium is an important metal that is used mainly in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys due to the high tensile strength, hardness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. Vanadium consumption in the steel industry represents about 85% of the vanadium-bearing products produced worldwide. The primary sources of the metal are patronite, roscoelite, and mottramite. Vanadium has also been produced as a by-product of the uranium production program which uses carnotite ores as a source of uranium. Vanadiferous magnetite iron ores are used for producing vanadium as well. In addition, it is known that vanadium can be recovered from the ashes of crude oil and petroleum coke. The process for treating boiler residues, fly ash and petroleum coke is similar to the process used to treat spent catalysts and ores. However, some of these materials may contain high carbon that must be removed at specific stage of the operation. Several processes are available for obtaining vanadium from fly ash, such as roasting vanadium bearing materials in the presence of sodium salt. The salt roasted calcine is subsequently leached with an alkaline or acidic solution. To obtain a cal-cine from which the vanadium can subsequently be recovered, the carbon in the source materials has to be eliminated prior to the roasting process. Other processes use the conventional hydrometallurgical route, in which fly ash is leached with sulphuric acid to obtain an impure vanadium pentoxide. The impure vanadium pentoxide is then treated with a sodium carbonate solution under atmospheric conditions to subsequently precipitate vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Actually, the salt roasting process is the only process used commercially. In the present study, the progress in the technology of vanadium extraction from secondary materials is reviewed. The perspectives and the challenges for new process development are discussed.

"The paper describes the results of stripping of copper production dusts by leaching with aqueous soda, nitric acid solutions and recovery from solutions resulting in the production of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.The combination of two stripping operations under chosen optimal conditions allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92 % copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each. The major amount of rhenium (~ 80%) is recovered at the carbonization stage, and other metals - at the nitric acid leaching stage.Lead sulfate was precipitated by mixing solutions resulting from carbonization and leaching. Tribasic lead sulfate was produced by dissolving lead sulfate in sodium hydroxide solutions. Rhenium was recovered from mother liquor resulting from lead sulfate precipitation by liquid-liquid extraction and zinc was recovered from raffinates. Trialkylamine (TAA) was used as an extractant for rhenium recovery and di-2- ethylhexylphosphoric acid was used for zinc recovery. Optimal liquid-liquid extraction parameters have been defined allowing the recovery of 96% rhenium in crude ammonium perrhenate and 94% zinc in sulfuric acid solution. Based on the experimental data, the flowchart for dust processing to produce salable products - lead, rhenium, zinc salts has been suggested."

Copper concentrate containing complex sulphides of Cu-Ni with 14.13% Cu and 10.04% Ni besides impurities such as 0.33% Co and 0.71% Mo, is not acceptable to the copper smelters due to the smelting problems. Selective bioleaching of nickel from the concentrate can be considered an an option to make it suitable for copper smelter. Effect of elemental sulphur and pyrite on the bioleaching of Ni and Co has been investigated using a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A.f.) and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A.t.). Parameters such as pH, temperature, particles, size etc. were optimised to understand the role of additives in the bioleaching. With 2% S at 308K, 2.0 pH, 5% pulp density and 200µm size particles while shaking at 100 rpm, 79% Ni, 41% Co and 5% Cu were bioleached as compared to the leaching of 81% Ni and 45% Co in presence of 10 wt% pyrite in 60 days; 27% Ni, 24% Co and 4% Cu were recovered in sterile experiment. The selective dissolution of nickel and cobalt as compared to copper may be explained by galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite: pentlandite / pyrrhotite. Bioleaching was facilitated by strong oxidizing conditions due to higher Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio/redox potential (ESCE) as a result of improved interaction of minerals through biooxidation of sulphur and accelerated galvanic interaction by pyrite. The mechanism of selective leaching of Ni and Co was established by XRD phase identification.

As the important potash, the product yield of KCl in winter is low and the resources waste is serious according to the deficiency of collectors, which can be used in this condition currently. This paper studied on the change of contact angle, turbidity, and flotation recovery of KCl particles when different chain lengths, ratios of amines were used as collectors in KCl flotation process to get a new mixed collector. The contact angle values of KCl crystal in its brine solution added different amine collectors were first measured by captive bubble method. The turbidity of brine solutions were then measured by the laboratory turbidimeter at room temperature when different amine collectors were contained. In the end micro-flotation experiment using mixed amine with fixed ratios and ODA as collectors respectively at 5 °C, 23 °C were performed. The results show when the ratio of the mixed amine is DDA- 20%, ODA-60%, C20-20%, the contact angle at KCl surface is the maximum and the hydrophobic state is best. Meanwhile the result of turbidity measurement indicates that the dispersion of mixed amine colloids is better than the ODA collector due to the addition of DDA, which plays the role of frother. The flotation results also prove that the mixed amine is not only fit for the KCl flotation at room temperature but also fit for its flotation at low temperature. This study provides strong technical support to extend the production time of potash business in Chaerhan areas in China.
