Fatalities resulting from ground workers colliding with objects and construction equipment accounted for approximately 18% of the total construction fatalities experienced in 2010. Current injury and fatality measuring methods have proven to be inadequate due to their use of passive measures of safety rather than a more active approach, such as the use of leading indicator data (also called near misses) of hazardous proximity situations between ground workers and heavy equipment on construction sites. The objectives are to create and evaluate the effectiveness of a reliable algorithm for collecting and analyzing the resulting leading indicator data from hazardous proximity situations. Numerous experiments emulating typical interactions between workers-on-foot and heavy equipment are used to evaluate the proximity sensing and detection technology. Safety leading indicator data (also called near misses) generated by the proximity sensing and detection technology during the experimental trials are used to create and assess the resulting algorithm. Results from the experiments indicate that leading indicator data generated from these systems can be processed and analyzed to identify hazardous proximity situations and incidents on construction sites.

This paper presents an overview of the metallurgical work on the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC), from historical development of the "Main Zone" to present day develoment of the "B Zone". The SLAC, originally discovered by the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) in the northeastern Canadian Shield of Québec and Labrador, is one of the world’s largest deposits of rare earth elements (REE) including yttrium and high field strength elements (HFSE) including zirconium, niobium, and titanium. It is part of a Precambrian, post-tectonic complex of peralkaline granites which intruded along the contact between gneisses and monzonites of the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake principally occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatite and aplite sheets and, to a lesser degree, within the host granites, particularly in intra-pegmatitic granites. The highest grade and metallurgically most favorable mineralization is in the upper, open pit mineable parts of the SLAC. Metallurgical development has been conducted under a number of mining companies, and various value metals have been targeted throughout the history of the deposit, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths. Historic processing routes tested have included ore beneficiation, atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction (SX), and metal precipitation. This paper also presents the metallurgical development supporting Quest Rare Minerals Ltd.’s (Quest) 2013 Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and 2014 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA).

"Two recent decisions by the Canadian courts could reduce the taxes paid by many profitable mines in Canada. At a time when the mining sector is hurting from an ever increasing tax burden and soft prices, the results of two cases are welcome news. Mining companies are well advised to check prior years' tax returns in the context of these developments. IntroductionSince 1976, the income tax legislation has provided a reduced rate of tax for taxpayers engaged in the mining of mineral resources, through the mechanism of the ""resource allowance"". The deduction given for the resource allowance effectively reduces the federal rate of tax by one quarter on resource profits. In general terms, ""resource profits"" are defined to include a taxpayer's income from: the production and processing in Canada of ore to any stage that is not beyond the prime metal stage (or the pellet stage or its equivalent in the case of iron ore); and, royalties computed with reference to the amount of value of production from mining operations in Canada.In computing income from these sources, the taxpayer must deduct expenses that may reasonably be regarded as applicable to those sources, with the exception of expenditures for Canadian exploration and development or financing costs.As a result of the mechanics of the calculation of the resource allowance, one quickly realizes that the lower the expenses deducted from the resource profits, the higher the resource profits and consequently the higher the 25% resource allowance. The impact of the recent court cases is to narrow the range of expenses which are required to be deducted in the determination of the resource profits.The two cases are outlined below."

The zinc refinery of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Ltd. went through a major modernization in 1993, when the roaster and the calcine and fume leach circuits were replaced by a new Sherritt zinc pressure leach plant. The HBMS plant, in Flin Ron, Manitoba, represents the first commercial application of the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process, with /00% of the zinc concentrate feed processed in autoclaves. The process design of the new plant required definition of the deportments of elements such as antimony, arsenic, chlorine, cobalt, fluorine, germanium, magnesium, manganese, selenium, tellurium and thallium. This paper describes the deportment of these elements in the commercial zinc plant during the first nine months of pressure leach operation, and compares these results with operations prior to the introduction of pressure leaching, and with the results of tests carried out in the She"itt laboratory during the process development phase.

"The February 18, 1987, Federal Budget contains a proposed amendment which would simplify somewhat the ""successor corporation"" rules in the Income Tax Act. Despite this amendment, though, the important successor rules will continue to be relatively complex.IntroductionThe February 18, 1987, Federal Budget papers propose an income tax amendment whereby the so-called ""successor corporation"" rules would be revised by removing the present provision which limits the application of these rules to a maximum of two ""successions"". The successor corporation rules represent one of the most complicated sets of rules in the Income Tax Act. This month, Tax Notes seeks to explain these rules and the proposed amendment in simplified terms.Basically, the successor rules provide a mechanism for transferring unused exploration and development expenses from one taxpayer to another , in specified circumstances. The aforementioned limitation of two successions refers to the rule which allows a maximum of two such transfers with respect to any particular pool of deductions."

This paper describes quality control methodologies for the production of semisolid A356 aluminum slugs with the SEED process. A methodology based on destructive tests carried out with an apparatus measuring the force to slice the slugs is presented. The force measurements were correlated with the solid phase morphologies of the slugs and were validated against a non destructive methodology that consisted in monitoring the temperature evolution of crucibles to produce the slugs and the drained metal. Results from the destructive and non destructive methodologies are compared and discussed.

Wrought magnesium alloys are of special interest as lightweight structural components as a result of their more homogeneous microstructures and improved mechanical properties compared to cast components. Extrusion as a shaping technology offers the possibility to produce a wide variety of magnesium alloy profiles. In this contribution we describe the role of extrusion parameters such as extrusion speed, ratio and temperature as well as the type of extrusion process on the microstructural development of AZ-series magnesium alloys and the resulting mechanical properties. The effect of microstructure on the tensile/compression deformation behavior of the alloys has also been investigated. Aspects of process optimization designed to overcome technical and economic limitations and thus establish magnesium alloy profiles for industrial applications will also be discussed.

The term ?cost? is too small when describing the destructive power of safety incidents for mining companies. Breaches in employee or environmental safety are felt way beyond the bottom-line: human life can be taken; ecosystems tarnished; the ire of peoples, media and government inflamed; significant halting of production; and high levels of legal and financial challenges. According to a recent survey of Mining executivesi, ?ensuring workforce safety? was the most important issues identified above any other, with a plurality of 31 percent, reigning above capital projects, product efficiency, and equipment reliability. We accept that safety is a most paramount issue, yet for many reasons we keep approaching the problem the same way we have in the past. We need to stop doing the same things decade over decade and try something new. New innovations are significantly changing the fundamentals of how mining companies explore, excavate, produce, refine and distribute their valuable commodities. Technologies such as visualization, analytics, location awareness, and gaming simulation are making these enterprises smarter. Now, attention turns to an area we?ve long held as integral to our business: safety. By using the same breakthrough technologies that are changing our business, we can now boldly imagine ? and credibly strive for ? a world of zero incidents.

"Substituting Portland cement with slag cement is one of the most economically attractive uses of slags. For this application, high cooling rates are required to form an amorphous structure. However, this is counteracted by the need to use small coolant flowrate to allow recovery of slag thermal energy as high quality heat to the coolant fluid. Therefore, a relationship between cooling rate of slag and its structure is essential to recover the heat effectively while making an amorphous slag.A modified Single Hot Thermocouple Technique (SHTT) was employed to investigate the crystallization behavior of slags by plotting their TTT (Time-Temperature, Transformation) diagrams. Seven different slag compositions containing CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, MgO were prepared at varying basicity (CaO/SiO2 =0.5-1.4).The results indicate that with increasing basicity, the TTT curves of glassy to crystalline transformation shift to the left which means higher crystallization tendency. This agrees with the fact that with the increase of basicity, the Si-O bonds are weakened, which in turn facilitates the re-ordering and crystallization of the silicate structure."

"The production of salable Rare Earth Element (REE) products necessitates a sequence of chemical separation steps between the mine and market commodities. The effectiveness of the chemical separations that purify REE salts is critical to the success of the producer, as the purity of REE salt products affects their market price. This is due to the fact that impurities in REE salts, even at low levels, can be deleterious to the function and usability of the end product. The purification of REE by removal of low levels of contaminant has been referred to as "product polishing". The technologies commonly in use for product polishing, solvent extraction (SX) and ion exchange (IEX) are challenged by the availability of separation chemistries to separate the contaminant from the desired REE salt. In simple terms, if a product specification is 99.9% purity, the SX or IEX separation reagents need to have at least a 999:1 selectivity ratio. Significant testing has been carried out on the use of solid phase extraction (SPE) columns to extract low-level impurities such as aluminum or zinc from REE product streams. The SPE columns are nano-composite materials that have rapid equilibration kinetics with the solutes being processed by the columns. The SPE matrices have been modified with chelating ion exchange ligands that bind the contaminating ion with great selectivity in residence times of a few seconds. Thus, REE streams with 1 to 2% of contaminating aluminum ions, have been polished to >99.99% purity. In this paper, results are presented on the removal of aluminum impurity from a didymium (neodymium+praseodymium) product stream using SPE technology. The selection of the SPE medium and the process steps to treat the feed solution for aluminum removal and ultimate stripping and recycle of the solid phase extractant are discussed."

This paper will review the state of the global vanadium industry and outline the implications for the market in the coming years. Global vanadium resources and reserves will be defined. Current production of vanadium will be quantified and examined in terms of production by country, sources of raw materials for production and cost implications of the production processes. Current consumption of vanadium by country and by application will be reviewed. Vanadium supply/demand balance in recent years and the resulting impact on global inventory levels will be discussed. Projections for changes in global production, consumption and resulting inventory changes for the vanadium market in the coming years will be made.

"The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company are planning to construct a permanent storage facility for high-level nuclear waste at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository relates to large fracture shear displacements, since these may damage intersected waste containers. Although details in fracture surface geometries are known to influence slip magnitudes and distributions, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties due to lack of relevant field-scale data and to limitations in available modelling tools. The purpose of the work described in this paper is to explore the possibilities to use the distinct element code 3DEC to generate and analyze models with isolated, non-planar fractures and, based on the results of such models, get perspectives on the influence of basic disturbances such as ridges, steps and waves. Given the model set-up, fracture segments with orientations deviating from the critical one will contribute to stabilize the fracture. As a result, all analyzed non-planar fractures slip less than the critically oriented planar fracture. We demonstrate that the angle of deviation is the most influential parameter determining the slip magnitude for comparable surface geometries. Similarly inclined steps and ridges have almost equal slip reductions despite differences in surface area restricting the movement. Although it may be possible to translate the influence of such irregularities to an effective coefficient of friction that could be used as input to models with idealized planar fractures, additional analyses with randomly shaped and distributed asperities, different fracture sizes and with alternative stress loads, need to be carried out to devise a defensible strategy for this type of parameter variation. INTRODUCTIONThe Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company’s (SKB) concept for deep geological storage of high-level nuclear waste is the KBS-3 method according to which the waste will be encapsulated in copper canisters and deposited, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, in vertical deposition holes at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock (SKB 2011). A site has been selected in the Forsmark area, which is located some 120 km north of the Swedish capital Stockholm. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository that has been identified by SKB (SKB 2011) is related to large shear displacements along repository host rock fractures induced by a nearby earthquake, since these may cause mechanical damage to intersected waste containers. Due to lack of relevant data at the appropriate field scale and to limitations in available modelling tools, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties. The standard numerical tool, 3DEC (Itasca 2013), used in SKB’s rock mechanics analyses, for example, generates planar fractures by default. Results from dynamic 3DEC earthquake-models (Fälth et al. 2010) currently provide input to layout decisions, i.e., the diameter of the smallest planar fractures that must be avoided when deciding on waste container positions at different distances from potential earthquake faults. It is, however, well known that fracture surfaces are rough or undulating on a wide range of scales (e.g., Candela et al. 2012) and that such deviations from planarity influence the mechanical behaviour of the fractures (e.g., Dieterich and Smith 2009, Marshall and Morris 2012, Ritz and Pollard 2012). It will probably never be a realistic option to attempt to represent the geometrical complexity of a population of fractures of different size, shape and surface structure in any large-scale rock mechanical analysis relevant for the performance assessments of the nuclear waste repository. Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

"The Syncrude project is an integrated complex designed to mine, extract and upgrade bitumen from the Athabasca tar sands to produce 129,000 barrels per day of synthetic crude oil. This paper provides a brief general description of the location, history and geology of the tar sands and the overall organization and structure of the project. The major emphasis and the bulk of the detail presented deals with the extraction plant; a material handling and mineral processing installation designed to treat 312,000 tons per day of tar sand feed.History of the Tar SandsThe Athabasca tar sand deposit was recorded in 1788 by Peter Pond, however the first serious geological mapping and exploration did not begin until 1915. Little interest was taken in the deposits until the Second World War, when the governments of Canada and Alberta conducted an extensive exploration program. In addition a number of pilot plants were sponsored during the 1940 -1950 decade. The hot water separation process was successfully demonstrated on the pilot plant scale during 1948 -49, and was established commercially in 1967 in the G.C.O.S. plant. The Syncrude plant, due to come on stream in April 1978, also employs the hot water separation process."

High quality, mono-dispersed, hollow CeO2 microspheres with high surface area were produced by a spray pyrolysis method at 700oC. CeCl3 was used as the raw material of the process rather than Ce(NO3)3 because the latter is relatively difficult to obtain in industrial quantities. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy results confirm the high quality synthesis of hollow CeO2 microspheres with narrow size distribution, good mono-disperse, and good reproducibility. The process of the formation of mono-dispersive CeO2 microspheres was investigated by chemical dynamics and a possible mechanism is proposed. This simple method for synthesis of CeO2 microspheres is easily scaled up to fabricate other metal oxide nanostructured materials at industrial scale.

B206 aluminum?copper alloy has a potential for wider use in the automotive industry due to its light weight and relatively superior mechanical properties as compared to aluminum-silicon alloys. The possibility of casting this alloy via Lost Foam Casting (LFC) has not been investigated in detail. Therefore, the effects of foam types (T170B standard untreated EPS and T175-brominated EPS), coating types (Styro Shield 5553 and Styro Shield 5554), copper level (4.5 wt % and 5.0 wt %) and titanium levels (0.5 wt % and 0.25 wt %) were related to fillability, microstructure and microporosity. The metal velocity in T175 EPS pattern was higher than that in T170B EPS pattern. For T175 EPS pattern, the total solidification time was 3% higher and the loss of temperature for decomposition of EPS was lower than those in the case of T170B EPS pattern. The grain size, porosity level and maximum pore size were quantified using Light Optical Microscopy (LOM) and image analysis. The casting with T175 EPS pattern showed larger grain size relative to that with T170B EPS pattern. The porosity level and the maximum pore size decreased significantly when the titanium level was increased from 0.05 wt % to 0.25 wt %.

The producers of certain metals like nickel and cobalt increasingly face a shortage of easy-to-mine and easy-to-process ore bodies. Their focus is shifting towards alternative raw materials which in turn demand new, different extraction techniques. One potential route for processing a ferrous ore with a non-ferrous target metal is atmospheric leaching with hydrochloric acid followed by purification of the pregnant leach solution (PLS). For the separation of iron from the PLS, and, in turn, the extraction of the non-ferrous compounds, the following flow sheet is proposed. Pre-concentration of the PLS, oxidation of ferrous (if present) to ferric chloride, hydrolysis of ferric chloride leading to the precipitation of hematite and the evaporation of hydrochloric acid, followed by crystallization of non-hydrolysable metal chlorides by means of sparging hydrogen chloride into the solution. Hydrogen chloride required in the latter step is produced internally by super-azeotropic distillation of regenerated hydrochloric acid. The liquid filtrate from the crystallization step is recycled to hydrolysis. Depending on the specific composition of the PLS, the hematite produced contains only traces of other impurities, whereas the crystallized mix of non-hydrolysable metal chlorides – containing also the target metal in enriched form – contains ferric chloride only in an amount referring to the filter cake moisture. These crystals can then undergo further hydrometallurgical separation and extraction processes. As an example, this flow sheet is proposed for treating nickel laterite ores. Experiments related to the demonstration of crucial assumptions in the flow sheet are presented. Based on those experiments a mass and energy balance of the flow sheet was calculated and is presented here together with a table of the major consumables in order to provide a basis for an operating cost estimate and other process economics.
