Chemical Mechanical polishing, or CMP, has four components in the polishing interface; namely the polishing pad, the polishing fluid, the abrasives in the fluid, and the surface being polished. Understanding the way that load is transferred between these components is key to understanding and predicting wafer polishing. Numerous models of CMP and the different load sharing arrangements which occur between these four components have been proposed. These include models by Luo and Dornfield (1) and Fu, Chandra and colleagues (2). Other models focus on just one or two loading arrangements, such as `hydroplaning' when all load is transmitted by the liquid in the case of Runnels and Eyman (3). In this work, we consider four possible combinations of load transfer from pad to wafer in CMP. These combinations are listed below in Table 1 and are illustrated schematically in Figure 1. It is important to note the role of scale in this process; the illustrations in Figure 1 are drawn to scale from actual profilometer scans obtained over a length of 5 with particles of 150 nm in diameter. For instance, in hydroplaning, or hydrodynamic lubrication, the lateral force exerted on the polished surface by the particles can be no higher than the fluid shear force developed in the gap between the pad and wafer. This is not expected to generate high rates of material removal from the surface (4). For contact that is largely between the pad and the wafer, such as the regime depicted in Figure ld, the lateral load is transmitted to the wafer by the pad and is hence limited by the pad's low rigidity. This regime is not expected to generate high material removal rates either. The highest levels of material removal are expected from regimes where the mechanical load exerted on the system is transmitted by the particles, in combination with either the fluid or the pad. Under what circumstances does the polishing regime change from one to another? What must occur in order to initiate or terminate contact between the system components? This is an ongoing question in the field of tribology, and has traditionally been viewed in terms of the pressure and velocity applied to the system, the thickness of the fluid film between the two surfaces, and the roughness of those surfaces (4). In this paper, we propose a new mechanism ? that the load on the particles may be sufficient to totally embed them in the polishing pad, at which point they are no longer able to transmit load and polish the wafer surface. This is illustrated schematically in Figure 1(d).

Contaminated neutral drainage (CND) is characterized by the presence of metal concentrations above regulatory requirements at circumneutral pH in mine drainage. The generation of CND by tailings and waste rocks is a growing concern for the mining industry due to increasingly restrictive regulatory requirements. Difficulties in CND prediction arise from the low oxidation rates of sulfide minerals and from the metal retention potential within the wastes. In fact, sorption phenomena may induce an important delay in the development of CND. For now, it is not possible to adequately consider this delay using the prediction tools developed for acid-mine drainage, such as humidity cells, columns and lysimeters. This work aims to present the new approaches currently under study for CND prediction, particularly the use of a chelating agent in kinetic tests. The main challenge of CND prediction is to quantify the metal retention potential of mine wastes, especially when sorption phenomena are involved in metal retention. Three approaches are currently used to overcome this difficulty. Firstly, the sorption potential is estimated using batch sorption studies. The second approach consists of artificially saturating the sorption potential of the mine waste by contact with a contaminated leachate in sorption-enabling conditions until saturation of the retention potential. These approaches both require that the possible metals involved in CND are known (as well as their chemical speciation) prior to the tests, which require an exhaustive material characterization. Although the two methods enable a qualitative estimation of the retention potential of mine wastes, their results are difficult to scale up from the laboratory to the field since some important parameters are not taken into account. A third proposed approach consists of inhibiting metal sorption at the source using chelating agents. The hypothesis is that chelating the metals immediately upon their release from the oxidation of sulfide minerals will inhibit all geochemical interactions (sorption, complexation, secondary mineral precipitation, ion exchange, etc.) between the metal and its environment. The ideal chelating agent will inhibit geochemical interactions after metal release in the drainage waters without having any impact on the sulfide oxidation and acid neutralisation rates. These approaches were tested over a waste rock sample that is known to naturally generate CND after a few decades of weathering. Results show that kinetic testing (weathering cell, ± 70 g samples) using a chelating agent (EDTA) in the leaching water renders higher metal concentrations in the leachates than a control sample without EDTA, suggesting that sorption (and possibly other geochemical interactions) is inhibited. These results suggest that the combination of these approaches can be efficiently used for more precise CND prediction from mine wastes. Future work will be done using the chelating agent approach over larger scale tests such as columns (± 80 kg samples) and field cells (± 100 tons) in order to propose an integrated approach for CND prediction.

In 2010 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (UESPA) revised the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) by lowering the permissible value to a 1-hour average SO2 concentration of 75 ppb. In 2012, the USEPA designated the Miami area as non-attaining for the new SO2 NAAQS. A number of options were studied to assist in bringing the Miami smelter into attainment with the new standard. The chosen solution included: Installation of a large tertiary hooding system over the converter aisle; Hooding of the anode vessels and treatment of the anode gas in a baghouse; Installation of a large 2,325,212 Nm3/hr caustic scrubber to treat the captured converter fugitives and anode off-gases; Installation of a secondary ESP for the tapping fugitive off-gas treatment system; and the continuous scrubbing of all acid plant tail stack gases. The modifications have reduced smelter SO2 emissions by 85%, achieving a world class SO2 stack emissions rate of 0.45 kg of SO2/tonne Cu. INTRODUCTION The Freeport McMoRan Miami smelter has been previously described in literature (Steinborn, Pasca, Sallee, Binegar, Bhappu). For the sake of brevity a brief description is given here. The Miami smelter is located 129 km east of Phoenix, Arizona near the town of Miami, Arizona. The smelter was established in 1915 and has undergone a number of process upgrades and modernizations over the years. The present smelter consists of an Isasmelt furnace, an electric settling furnace, four Hoboken converters, two anode refining vessels & one casting wheel; and one double contact sulfuric acid plant. Concentrates are railed & trucked to Miami from four Freeport McMoRan mines located in Arizona & New Mexico. The wet concentrates, typically containing 10% H2O with a Cu/S ratio of 0.85, are smelted in an Isasmelt furnace to a matte grade of 58%. The entire output from the Isasmelt is laundered into an Elkem electric furnace (originally installed in 1972 as the primary smelting furnace) for separation into matte and slag. Slag containing 0.85% Cu is skimmed from the electric furnace and discarded. Molten matte, containing 60% Cu, is tapped from the electric furnace and processed in one of four Hoboken converters to produce blister copper. Two anode refining vessels further refine the blister copper before the final product is cast on a single, 30 mold, casting wheel. All of the anodes produced at Miami are shipped to the Freeport McMoRan electrolytic refinery in El Paso Texas for refining into cathode copper. Smelter off-gases from the Isasmelt, electric furnace and Hoboken converters are combined and treated in a double contact acid plant to produce sulfuric acid. Acid produced at Miami is internally consumed at Freeport McMoRan mines in the region.

The Kennecott-Outotec Flash Converting technology has been proven as an advanced and mature process in 5 individual plants during the past 2 decades. High grade copper matte (65–72%) produced in the flash smelting, or other smelting technologies is granulated to 3-5mm granules in a water torrent, and further crushed to fine powder (≈50µm) and dried to contain less than 0.3% H2O. Oxygen enriched air, together with fine copper matte powder and lime flux are injected into the reaction shaft by a matte burner. The copper making and slag making reactions will happen in very short time and distance during the particle falling and settling. However, industrial practice has found negative effects caused by sodium contamination. Na is introduced in the copper matte granulating process, and appears as Na2SO4 on particle surface. When Na content was high, scaling problems in the boiler will be worse, and the processing air will be blocked by the growing accretion around the matte burner, and as-produced blister copper is always high in S and O. In this present study, an industrial matte sample was used in the experimental work. Na was introduced into the matte powder by Na2SO4 solution soaking. The burning behaviour of the doped copper matte powder has been investigated as a function of the impurity concentration and processing temperature. Morphology and composition of these samples explained how Na2SO4 converts and reacts in the oxidizing atmosphere, and how they or their converting species influence the burning behaviour of matte particles. Cross-sections of as-prepared samples were analyzed with SEM-EDS, and the reaction mechanism has been carefully interpreted. Results from the present study can benefit both academic and industrial people. INTRODUCTION "Flash Converting" technology was developed jointly by Kennecott Utah Copper Smelter and Outotec (Finland) OY in 1992. The first industrialization of the technology was in Utah Smelter in 1995. Since 2006, it has been successfully applied in Xiangguang Copper, Tongling Jinguan Copper Branch, Fangchengang Jinchuan Copper, and Ningde Southeast Copper. The technology has also been further developed in those smelters. At present, roughly 2 million tons blister copper is produced annually through the Kennecott-Outotec Flash Converting technology, accounting for more than 10% of global primary copper production. The technology has advantages of high efficiency, high sulfur capture rate, good in environmental issues, mature equipment supporting, high automatic control level, low comprehensive energy consumption and flexible connection with the smelting unit, which make the technology to be one of the best choices in investing a new large-scale copper smelter or updating an old copper project in the world.

"In the present work, we developed a Smart Process Control Toolkit (SProC) as a single simulation environment for the modelling of materials microstructure and its interaction with the local microchemistry during manufacturing of semi-finished products. This toolkit supports the data communication between sub-sequent processing steps such as casting, homogenization, pre-heating to deformation, etc. The thermo-kinetical simulation software MatCalc of MatCalc Engineering© GmbH was used for modelling of precipitation kinetics, such as formation of primary and secondary phases and their evolution. An import/export functionality of the precipitation distribution after each processing step was implemented to follow the parameter history. For the evolution of the local microstructure, a Mean Dislocation Density based Model (MD2M) was used. This model consists of two parts: (1) Flow Stress Model for calculation of the total strength during the deformation and (2) Static Recrystallization Model for account of the recrystallization and grain growth after the deformation. Validation was done by a comparison of experimental and simulated hot compression tests of a conventional AA2024 alloy.INTRODUCTION Optimization of a semi-finished products quality, elimination of typical production issues and cost savings are of a great demand for supply industries. However, it is currently not feasible to investigate the whole manufacturing process in detail at an industrial level. Concerning the processing parameters, one must understand the correlation mechanisms between macroscopic properties and microscopic material behavior. Numerical simulations, which could reproduce the real processing conditions on the one hand, and employ a physically based modelling on the other, are thus attracting a lot of attention and their power is no longer under the question. It is well known that e.g. the total strength of the material depends directly on distribution of precipitation particles and mean grain size. In order to follow their evolution during the manufacturing process beginning from casting to the final semi-finished product, and thus be able to control the process, one should use the techniques which would at the same time reproduce experimental processing conditions of real size objects (e.g. sheet, extrusions, etc.) and account for the evolution of a local microstructure and its interaction with the microchemistry. A commonly used approach is to implement a model which would describe the evolution of microstructure based on a dislocation density approach into a user defined material subroutine of some finite element solver. There is, however, also an influence of the manufacturing process by e.g. the evolution of a local microchemistry (formation, transformation and dissolution of the precipitation particles) on the microstructure and thus the macroscopic material behavior. Thus, a method is needed to follow the variable history through the simulation of the whole production chain."

"The Cape Ray Fault Zone of southwestern Newfoundland contains two notable electrum/ base metal sulphide quartz vein lode occurrences hosted by two contrasting lithological units, viz. a graphite schist horizon and a granite. The two occurrences, although in proximity, are not in direct contact, but, based on geochronological, geochemical and isotopic evidence, they were apparently deposited from hydrothermal fluids generated as a vapour phase from the magmatic progenitor of the Windowglass Hill granite.This paper provides further evidence, from REE and background A u and Ag data, for the magmatic origin of the hydrothermal fluids. Wall rocks to the electrum-bearing quartz veins in both the schists and granite have experienced a LREE depletion probably due to leaching by Cl-bearing solutions. Gold and silver contents are typically low in all rock types but there is a slight elevation in gold concentrations in those units in contact with the Window glass Hill granite. The granite also has the relatively highest gold and silver contents of any unit in the region.IntroductionThis paper presents the evidence from rare earth element (REE) and gold/silver concentration data for the magmatic origin of hydrothermal fluids responsible for deposition of the Cape Ray electrum deposits of southwestern Newfoundland. The two deposits occur in the Cape Ray Fault Zone (Fig. I) within the Windsor Point Group and Window glass Hill granite. The larger occurrence is called the Main Shear Showing and consists of a deformed quartz vein horizon, which extends for - 6 km, within the late Devonian Windsor Point Group. This unit is an intermixed ignimbrite and mafic tuff sequence with associated schists (metasediments) and gabbros. The host rocks to the mineralized quartz veins are interleaved graphite, chlorite and sericite schists. Basal ignimbrites within the Windsor Point Group have been dated, by Rb/Sr isotopic methods, at 377 ±21 Ma (Wilton, 1983a). The basal ignimbrites also have enriched REE patterns, an elevated initial Sr ratio (0.709) and a peraluminous-siliceous nature which suggest they resulted from the partial melting of continental crust (Wilton, 1984)."

"The Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex, in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield in north-central Saskatchewan, is a small I. 6-km circular plug largely composed of high-alumina pyroxene cumulates forming a series of grossly concentric layers of clinopyroxenite, websterite and wehrlite. Minor dunite and gabbro are present in the northwestern part of the pluton.Disseminated primary magmatic pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and chromite occur throughout the intrusion. Sulphides occur in proportions of economic interest in the northern outcrops. A secondary assemblage of fine-grained oxides, sulphides and native metals occurs in serpentinized and uralitized peridotites and pyroxenites. Primary opaque minerals are largely altered to marcasite, violarite and hematite. The ores represent a primary magmatic assemblage extensively modified by metamorphism and, to a lesser extent, by supergene alteration.The complex intruded an Early Aphebian supracrustral succession during the waning stages of the Hudsonian orogeny. The metamorphic peak during Hudsonian time reached middle to upper amphibolite facies, granitized the country rocks and contributed to the partial amphibolitization of the ultramafic pluton.The Nemeiben complex has a number of features in common with the zoned intrusions of southeastern Alaska, including: the diopsidic composition of clinopyroxene, highly magnesian olivines, ubiquitous primary magnetite, relatively high alumina content of clinopyroxenes and the unlikelihood that associated gabbroic rocks are derived from a magma common to the ultramafic rocks. However, at Nemeiben, orthopyroxene occurs as a widespread postcumulus phase and, to a lesser extent, as a cumulus mineral. This fact, together with geochemical data on whole-rock and mineral compositions, indicates a tholeiitic parentage.The nickel-copper deposits of the Nemeiben Lake ultramafic complex are not currently economic, although standard technology for recovery of sulphide minerals in the clinopyroxenite (and websterite) would probably be adequate. Most ore minerals in the altered peridotites belong to the fine-grained secondary assemblage of opaques due to the formation of retrograde hydrous silicates and are probably too fine grained for standard recovery methods."

"This paper presents the statistical analyses of several sets of data acquired in several programs of sampling of radon daughters in uranium mines. The measurements were taken over periods of days or weeks for given locations or location occupations within these mines. Because the sampling applies to specific intervals of time and specific locations, a method is suggested f or the eventual application of a monitoring program which would be suitable on an annual basis for these locations. The present data and analyses thereof are not justifiably applicable to a monitoring regimen on an annualbasis, without a number of additional assumptions.The aim of the present analyses of concentration measurements is the determination of the minimum number of measurements required to achieve an annual radon daughter exposure estimate, for individual workers, having an error no greater than 50% at the 95% confidence level. The criterion of accuracy is taken from a statement in the American National Standard, Radiation Protection in Uranium Mines (ANSI NI3.8-I973), and is currently used, in somewhat modified form, as a guide to uranium mining licensees in Canada. Uncertainties associated with occupancy time are ignored in the present analysis. IntroductionOne of the principal aims of any scheme of radiation protection is that of improving the accuracy of exposure estimation for workers. The example presented here is from the area of radon daughter exposure estimation for uranium miners. The conventional means of estimating workers' exposures is grab sampling of radon daughter concentrations combined with occupancy time weighting in the various work and travel locations. Uncertainties exist in each of these components, and in an environment of highly variable radon daughter concentrations (such as an active uranium mine) one is always uncertain as to the representativeness of the grab sample (compared to the average concentration) unless a sophisticated monitoring scheme has been implemented based on previous experience in such an environment.Improvements in the accuracy and precision of employee radon daughter exposure records depend, primarily, on three factors;"

"The Strathcona Mine is located in Levack Township on the North Range ofthe Sudbury Basin. The main orebody consists of pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite mineralization associated with an embayment of the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive. A zone of massive chalcopyrite-cubanite-pentlandite mineralization occurs in a complex vein system in a series of mixed gneisses and breccias in the footwall. Vein widths vary from a few millimetres to 6 metres. In December 1979, this zone was estimated to contain 976,000 metric tonnes, with a grade of 9.31% Cu and 0.46% Ni. The vein system has a general strike of N 68°W at an angle of 60 degrees to the average strike of the footwall contact of the Irruptive. The dip of the vein system is 45 degrees sw. The strike and dip of individual veins in the system coincide with the directions that would result if a compressive stress had acted in a direction normal to the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive, producing a conjugate set of fractures. The strike of the Irruptive at the Strathcona Mine is parallel to the long axis of the basin.IntroductionThe Strathcona Mine, owned and operated by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, is located in Levack Township on the northwest rim of the Sudbury basin (Fig. I) . It is one of a group of nickel-copper sulphide ore deposits present along an 8.2-km section of the North Range of the Sudbury Irruptive. In the mines of the North Range, subunits of the Irruptive, going from hanging wall to footwall , include felsic norite, dark norite and dark norite breccia. The footwall complex at Strathcona includes the late granite breccia, which hosts a large proportion of the nickel-copper ores, and a compositionally variable group of brecciated and migmatized rocks, herein referred to as the feldspathic gneiss complex. It is within this latter group of rocks that the vein system of the Copper Zone occurs."

"The Pierre Beauchemin Mine attained commercial production in January 1989, and went on to produce 23 968 ounces of gold for the year, 3% higher than forecast. Underground development was accelerated to prepare the way for the production of an estimated 40 000 ounces in 1989.IntroductionThe Pierre Beauchemin Mine is located nine miles west of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Fig. I).As a result of the amalgamation with Sullivan Mines in October 1987, the mine is now entirely owned by Cambior Inc.The Eldrich deposit was discovered in 1953and began production in 1955, closing in 1962 following the decrease in gold prices and the simultaneous decrease in silica content in the ore, which was sold to the Noranda smelter for flux. A total of 717 000 tons grading 0.14 oz Au/t were produced during this period.From July 1984 to October 1987, an underground exploration program was carried out by Sullivan on the Eldrich mining concession and the nearby Flavel property. The first phase of the program included reinstallation of surface facilities and dewatering of the Eldrich Mine. Following the completion of the first phase, extensive exploration was carried out, including a major program of diamond drilling. It was then decided to deepen the shaft to a depth of 1800 ft to access a new zone called the No.5 Zone .Following the amalgamation with Sullivan in October 1987, Cambior assumed the role of operator for the project, and continued the shaft deepening work that had already been started. A feasibility study was completed in April 1988 and the Cambior board of directors approved a production decision for the Eldrich-Flavel project.The preproduction program extended from May to December 1988 and was aimed at preparing the stopes in the upper part of the mine and at developing the mine infrastructure at the bottom of the mine.The mine was officially opened in August 1988. Cambior renamed the project the Pierre Beauchemin Mine in recognition of Pierre Beauchemin's pioneer-work."

"A review of the major renovation of the fifty-year old C-I headframe facilities at NERCQ's Con Mine, Yellowknife, N. W.T. is provided. The project was complete with only two 3-day shutdowns of the facility .Work consisted of four major phases: structural reinforcement of the adjoining mill building prior to dismantling; relocation of virtually all mine and mill utilities which transited the headframe collar en route from the adjacent powerhouse; dismantling of the entire headframe facility and portion of the mill building, including the removal of asbestos siding; and erection of a new headframe, idler rower, collarhouse and mill wall.This paper describes the work and methods used by NERCQ, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited, Acres International Limited, and others to bring the project to a successful completion. The history of the project is discussed from the planning phase through construction, including; design, procurement, and construction scheduling. The paper discusses the unique elements of the project, the problems encountered, and the methods used to achieve success.IntroductionThe Con Mine is a 800 tpd gold operation located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Originally owned and operated by Cominco Limited , the Con Mine was sold in December 1986 to NERCO Minerals Company, and officially renamed NERCO Con Mine, Ltd. The Con Mine has been in operation for over 50 years. The first gold brick ever produced in the Northwest Territories was poured at the Con Mine in 1938. The original C-1 shaft was sunk in 1937 to a depth of 235 ft. In 1941 the shaft was deepened to a depth of 950 ft, and the original timber head frame was replaced with a steel structure. Following the discovery of the Campbell Shear in 1946, the C-l shaft was again deepened to its present depth of 2443 ft. Over the years, mine production gradually moved deeper and further from the C-l shaft."

The Key Lake nickel-uranium deposits are situated within the Wollaston domain of the Churchill structural province. The host rocks of the two orebodies are of Aphebian and Helikian age. The orebodies occur mainly within a 5.2-km-Iong, northeast-trending zone which coincides with the intersection of the sub-Athabasca unconformity and a reverse fault striking east-northeast. The principal controls of mineralization are structural and lithostratigraphic (i.e., post-Athabasca faults, the sub-Athabasca unconformity and graphitic metapelites in the lower Aphebian, close to the Aphebian/Archean unconformity). Grades of up to 35% U3O8 and 20% Ni are recorded over intervals of up to 2 m. Some hypogene zonation exists and the nickel mineralization tends to underlie the high-grade uranium ore. The ore minerals include pitchblende, a-U307, coffinite, gersdorffite, millerite, niccolite, bravoite, zoisite, sericite, chlorite and kaolinite. The kaolinite is a post-ore, supergene alteration product. Chemical studies of the sub-Athabasca paleo weathering profile sho w that regolithization is characterized by depletion in Si02 and K20 and concomitant enrichment in Al203 and perhaps MgO. In the paleoweathering profile the ferromagnes ian minerals are chloritized, the Ksfeldspars sericitized and the plagioclase saussuritized. Preliminary geochronologic data from the ores reveal U/Pb ages of -1228 my, - 960 my and 89 my, and Rb /Sr data indicate basement ages of -1850 my and - 1372 my. Aphebian pelitic protoliths, carrying U and Ni, may have released some metals during post-Hudsonian weathering, and minor concentration in structural and geochemical traps may have taken place prior to the deposition of the Athabasca strata. However, it is felt that the bulk ofthe ore-grade mineralization wasgenerated after the deposition of the Athabasca formation and after faulting, probably during a major regional thermal/ intrusive episode of Grenvillian age. Several episodes of remobilization took place between 1228and 89 my ago.

"This paper discusses the mining problems encountered at the Fording River coal mine to date, and how they have been solved. All of the production now comes from surface mining, but underground hydraulic mining is planned and briefly described. Other facets of the operation, including markets, equipment and personnel, are covered. IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 48,000 acres of coal lands, having an estimated 2.0 to 3.0 billion long tons of metallurgical coal in place. (Although not a point for further discuss ion in this paper, the company also holds approximately 1.0 million acres of mineral rights. These consist primarily of coal in Alberta, potash and coal in Saskatchewan, and minor industrial mineral holdings of limestone, salt and bentonite in the three western provinces.)Fording Coal is owned 60% by Canadian Pacific Investments Ltd. and 40% by Cominco Ltd. Inasmuch as Cominco itself is owned approximately 54% by CPI, it is seen that the effective CPI ownership of Fording is about 82%. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January, 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees.The company's head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located approximately 45 miles north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/British Columbia boundary, only 95 air miles and 200 road miles from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45 million long tons of metallurgical coal over IS years, commencing in 1972 at an annual rate of 3 million long tons per year. Despite some start- up difficulties, the mine and plant facilities achieved their rated capacities in 1975, producing and shipping at the 3-million-Iong-ton level. It is intended to show that the machine offers a viable alternative to the normal methods used for driving roadways and also for coal production . The paper also looks at possible applications in Canada.IntroductionThis paper is an attempt to show how the principles used in mechanical cutting, conveying and roof support are being applied to a development system capable of catering to a variety of situations and conditions. It is also intended to illustrate how the same system can be used as a total mining system for the mining of many minerals.In order to give some sort of time perspective to the age of the principles, reference can be made to an article in Coal Mining & Processing which states:- During World War II the Germans developed the "" panzer"" or armoured face conveyor.- After the war the English developed power cutters or trepanners that were mounted on the face conveyor, this then developed into the shearer.- The first shearer was produced by the Anderson Company in England in 1950 and shortly after that the Eickhoff Company started manufacturing shearers in German y.- The first hydraulic roof support was produced in 1954 by Gullick.This is a potted history of the three major components of the new system, i.e.:- Mechanical cutting element based on the shearer.- Transport element based on the panzer.- Optional roof support based on the hydraulic face supports.It can therefore be said that since the "" youngest"" of the elements was produced in 1954 the principles of the system in respect of the rapid change in mining equipment are in fact old.Of the three major components the most important is the cutting element since the major benefits of the system are to be obtained from this."

"The presence of excessive water in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit initiated studies into the ground-water conditions that might be expected in mining the Granite Lake and Pollyanna pits. Hydrologic information obtained from a pump test program in 1974 indicated that deep-well dewatering could be successfully achieved. In 1976, a deep-well dewatering system consisting of eight wells was installed on the periphery of the Pollyanna pit . it has been responsible for a significant decrease in mining costs.This paper presents a brief summary of the engineering principles involved in the design of the Gibraltar dewatering system and the problems encountered in the installation and operation of deep-well pumps. IntroductionGibraltar Mines is an open-pit copper-molybdenite mine located approximately 230 air miles north of Vancouver in the central interior of British Columbia (Fig. I). The property consists of three separate major orebodies; Gibraltar East, Granite Lake and Pollyanna (Fig. 2). Mining commenced during the summer of 1971, in the Gibraltar East Stage 1 pit. The Granite Lake Stage 1 pit was mined from mid 1974 to mid 1976. The Pollyanna Stage 1 pit is currently being mined and the Gibraltar East Stage 2 is being developed for production. This report is intended as an outline of the studies and tests leading up to and including the installation of the Pollyanna pit dewatering system, the problems encountered and the results obtained.GeneralIn the summer of 1973, mining in the Gibraltar East pit progressed below ""daylight"" on the down-hill side and ground water very quickly became a costly nuisance in the day-to-day mining operations. Mining, maintenance and blasting costs reflected these problems. Concern was also voiced about adverse effects of ground water on pit wall stability. This concern later became a reality in the Gibraltar East and Granite Lake pits. A study was initiated to investigate various methods and costs of dewatering the pit areas. The study included in-pit sumps, deep peripheral wells and a drainage gallery system located below the pits."

"This paper describes the development of a dynamic model for a full- scale (64 tonnes/hr) grinding circuit consisting of an open-circuit rod mill feeding a ball mill operating in closed circuit. The object of constructing such a model is to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of potential control schemes. Model selection, data processing and parameter estimation are discussed, and static and dynamic results of simulations are presented. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the adequacy of the model for such studies, and likely limitations on control of such circuits.IntroductionThe model developed here is intended to represent the grinding behaviour of the grinding circuit at the Lake Dufault division of Falconbridge Copper Mines Ltd. This circuit has been fully described elsewhere. At the time of the work described, the ball mill discharge was fed to a four-cell flotation bank , the tailings of which are combined with the rod mill discharge in the cyclone feed pump sump. As the emphasis in this study is on grinding behaviour, and as only I per cent of cyclone feed material is removed in these cells, no attempt has been made to include flotation behaviour in the simulation. One effect of the presence of flotation cells in the grinding circuit is, however, to necessitate somewhat finer grinding than might otherwise be needed: this will have effects on mill parameters.The paper is organized as follows. First the selection of models is discussed, paying particular attention to the problem of selecting simple, yet adequate, flow models for the mills. Then data gathering is described. The method of deriving mill model parameters is explained, and the results presented. Mass balancing of cyclone data and the determination of cyclone model parameters are described. The linking of the models into a full simulation is outlined, and sta tic and dynamic results presented. Finally, the results are discussed and conclusions drawn ."

"Prior or simultaneous addition of ammonium sulphate can, not only enhance the activating effect of hydrosulphide ions on xanthate flotation of malachite but it can also eliminate possible detrimental or depressing effects of excess residual hydrosulphide . Use of relatively inexpensive ammonium sulphate appears to reduce the consumption of the much more expensive sulphidizing agent for optimal flotation recovery INTRODUCTIONOxidized copper minerals float poorly with conventional thiol-type collectors. This is believed to be due to the nonadherent character of the collector coating, which is readily re- moved by particle abrasion. Rosas and Polingr reported emulsion flotation seemed capable of resisting abrasion during the flotation of non-sulphide copper ores. It appears that the most common flotation technique for oxidized copper minerals comprises sulphidization with Na .S and subsequent treatment by sulphydryl collector. The principles of this method are available . Malghan recently reviewed the studies on the role of sodium sulphide in the flotation of oxidized copper, lead and zinc minerals.It is well known that in the sulphidized flotation of malachite, the activation process depends strongly on the concentration of the sulphidizing agent, i.e., insufficient sulphide gives poor recoveries because of inadequate sulphidization; excessive sulphide also causes poor recoveries due to the depressive effect of the residual hydro-sulphide ions in solution. A major difficulty in sulphidization, especially with a varying feed nature, is to establish and maintain the optimum sulphide concentration in solution. In plant practice, vigorous control of sodium sulphide is required and stepwise addition of the reagent is recommended to improve the efficiency of the process. Soto and Laskowskim have found that malachite, depressed by an excess of sulphide ions, can restore its floatability if air or oxygen is introduced to the pulp. They attributed this to the oxidation of the HS - ions on the surface of the mineral. Jones and Woodcockuvi showed that a sulphide ion selective electrode could be used to optimize the conditions (e.g . amount of hydrosulphide, sulphidization time, flotation time) more readily and precisely than existing methods in the flotation of oxidized copper ores."

"In October of 1980, Fording's 15 000-ton capacity clean coal silo was put into operation. The silo was unique in that it was designed to allow the mass flow of material, coupled with a sophisticated computer-controlled dynamic loadout/weighing system.On May 1, 1982, an explosion, attributed to a methane buildup, devastated the top of the silo. .As a contingent plan to minimize the effect of the production loss the conveyance to the silo top was reconstructed and the silo' was back in operation by mid-June 1982, although the silo top was left open to prevent further methane buildup. As dust emissions occurred during loading ofthe silo, an extensive study was undertaken to establish dust control for the silo, while at the same time providing methane detection and control.The study, conducted for Fording by the Cambrian Engineering Group of Calgary, involved an extensive search and investigation of existing coal silos. The study concluded that there IS no universally accepted method of controlling methane emissions in coal silos.The study also produced a unique conceptual design for handling methane, while at the same time, protecting the environment . Fording's Clean Coal SiloThe silo, located at Fording Coal's Fording River metallurgical coal operation, is utilized for the storage and load out of cleaned thermally-dried metallurgical coal.The silo was constructed in 1979 and 1980 to reduce unit train loadout times and to facilitate the handling of “special shipments"" of coal. The silo went into operation in October 1980, under manual control and utilized computerized, automated loading by February 198I.The silo is 21 m in diameter and 76 m high, with a nominal capacity of IS 000 live tonnes. The coal storage portion of the silo is 21 m in diameter and 48 m high, utilizing 2 steep-angled hopper outlets allowing mass flow of the stored coal during train loading. Each hopper has a control gate and a discharge chute, one chute for bulk loading, the other for trim loading of coal into the rail cars."

"Thrashing one's way through a jungle of entangled tax rules is no easy task today, as Canada's legislators continue to complicate this country's income tax laws. At some magical point, there is presumably some balance to be struck between legislation which is equitable and unambiguous on the one hand, and at the same time is efficiently complied with and administered. It is becoming increasingly clear that the legislation is not in balance, and that there is a pressing need for some simplification of the income tax rules and regulations especially in areas of critical importance to the resource industries-even though such simplification will likely involve some sacrifice of equity and certainty.Introduction""I would wish that ... the superfluous and tedious statutes were brought into one sum together, and made more plain and short, to the intent that men might better understand them."" Edward VI, King of England 1547-1553.Regal decree notwithstanding, the legislation of most developed nations continues to become more complex, lengthy, and confusing than ever before. Canada's income tax system cannot escape the accusatory finger pointing at examples of this serious problem which plagues all of us today.Although many areas of our tax law could easily warrant some degree of simplification, for those who are involved with this country's resource sector, that horrendous, almost unreadable, part of our tax legislation which deals with resource taxation must be regarded s a prime candidate for simplification. In recent decades, but particularly in the past ten years since tax reform in 1972, budget after budget, both federal and provincial, have amended, massaged, modified, and manipulated the resource tax rules to the point where not only are taxpayers totally lost in their attempts to make some sense of the entanglement of rules, but also the draftsmen themselves acknowledge that the outer limits of complexity are being reached, and that the whole set of rules is on the verge of grinding to a groaning halt under its own weight of nonsense and frustration."

"While it might seem like heresy to suggest that ""taxation"" can be a source of financing, never the less some generous tax rules can considerably enhance the tax savings pertaining to a particular expenditure or project. A basic tax knowledge, and careful tax planning, can optimize government participation in a project. INTRODUCTIONIn trying to identify sources of financing for a project, ""government"" as a source of funding is normally thought of in terms of government grants, loan guarantees, interest rate buy downs, property tax waivers, hydro subsidies, and so on. Generally, such concessions are somewhat difficult to obtain, especially in the current period of apparent fiscal restraint. One source of government funding which should not be overlooked is the income tax regime, and, at the provincial level, the various provincial mining tax regimes.While the taxpayer would not normally view a tax system as a potential source of government financing, nevertheless various federal and provincial rules applicable to the mining industry can offer attractive tax deductions - and tax savings - with respect to particular expenditures. In fact, it is not unusual for a civil servant to refer to a tax deduction as a tax ""subsidy"". For example, in the right circumstances, the cost of a smelter expansion in New Brunswick would cost the operator only 31 cents on the dollar, with the federal and provincial governments paying for the other 69 cents by foregoing tax revenues (Table I). In a sense, such tax savings could be compared to a government grant equal to 69% of project costs. Of course, not every project expenditure will generate that degree of government funding. The fact of the matter is that the percentages of tax savings attached to different expenditures cover a wide range, depending on a complex mix of factors. The point to understand is that the tax rules can offer some valuable savings, even after tax reform, and that a basic knowledge of the tax rules can yield some fruitful rewards."
