The Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation requires enormous quantities of bricks each year for its Sydney steel plant operations. Clay brick of all types are purchased, while silica brick is made in the Company's plant at Sydney. A description of this plant was given in a paper presented by H. B. Gillis and F. C. Morrison at the 1938 Annual General Meeting of the Institute. The rock used to make silica brick was for years obtained from a quarry at Leitches Creek, about eighteen miles from Sydney. Due to the gradual deterioration of this deposit, the Corporation was forced to look for other sources of supply. In 1945, the problem was presented to the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and, through the efforts of Dr. A. E. Cameron and Mr. J. P. Messervey, an examination was made of a silica-rock deposit some six miles northwest of Yarmouth, N.S. Preliminary samples proved satisfactory, and arrangements were made with the Department of Mines to ship to the steel plant at Sydney a fifty-ton car load for the purpose of further testing. Brick made from this sample shipment stood up very well in the furnaces. At the same time, two hundred and fifty tons of silica rock from a deposit at Lac Bouchette, Que., were purchased from the Industrial Silica Corporation, and brick made from this rock also was found suitable for our requirements. Comparative transportation costs, however, led to a decision to open the Yarmouth deposit. The silica rock, or quartzite, of this deposit outcrops at Chegoggin point along what is known as the 'Pembroke shore', a northerly trending section of the coast-line at the extreme southwest of the Province, in Yarmouth county. The country here is fairly flat, with elevation averaging about twenty feet above high tide, and is for the most part mantled by a growth of brush and some scrub trees, chiefly small fir. Bed-rock is generally concealed beneath three to four feet of clayey soil, but scattered outcrops of the quartzite indicated that a band of this rock, some 260 feet wide, extended inland in a northeasterly direction from Chegoggin point at least to Utleys lake, a distance of about three miles.

In the pyrometallurgical processes of copper concentrates, arsenic is preferentially concentrated in the dusts carried by the gases as a result of their volatility and subsequent condensation in the gas cleaning train. In this work results obtained by alkaline leaching of the dusts from Ministro Hales roasting plant, belonging to Codelco, are presented. For the Ministro Hales plant the alkaline leaching would be an alternative to the recirculation of dusts to the roasting furnace. The experimental study considered NaOH and NaOH plus NaHS leaching of two samples of dusts, with 4.24 and 2.55% arsenic respectively. The results show that it is feasible to extract 90% of the arsenic and 50% of the antimony at room temperature using only NaOH, and when the temperature increases to 95ºC, the extractions of As and Sb increase. Copper remains in the solid residue with less than 1% dissolution, and the NaOH net consumption was approximately 140 kg/t of dust. In leaching tests with NaOH + NaHS, two types of methods were tested, baking plus leaching with water and direct leaching with a NaOH+NaHS solution. With the second method arsenic extraction increased to 95% and copper dissolution was less than 0.01% at 85ºC, NaOH 100 g/L, NaHS 90 g/L, 1.5 h and L/S ratio of 5/1 (L/kg). The bismuth remains stable in the solid in all cases. INTRODUCTION The presence of arsenic in copper concentrates has increased with time and the environmental regulations are becoming increasingly more stringent. In concentrate treatment pyrometallurgical plants, most of the arsenic is volatilized condensing in the gas train and is collected along with the entrained solids to form the flue dusts. Under these conditions, in smelters of copper concentrates with high arsenic content, the dusts are being treated in hydrometallurgical plants to extract and stabilize the arsenic, which also means that most of the copper contained in the dust is co-extracted with the arsenic. This affects the recovery of copper in the smelter and an alternative such as the selective alkaline leaching of arsenic, would allow the copper from flue dust to be recovered.

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time over 140 million tons of waste and low grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in-situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October, 1984 was designed to process 3,000 usgpm of dilute copper solution to produce 5,000 tons per year of high quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start up and initial year of operation of Gibraltar's SX-EW plant. The three areas: leaching solvent extraction and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to die Gibraltar operation.THE LEACHING CIRCUITThe mines waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dump. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and disolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the suphides and solublization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be at or near the ideal pH of 1.9 - 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate. See figure 1.The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start up in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate. See figure 2."

A detailed mineralogical study was carried out to characterize the products generated in a conventional copper refinery anode slimes treatment circuit. The anode slimes, which are first leached in sulphuric acid media under an oxygen pressure to dissolve the copper and much of the tellurium, were found to contain various Ag-Cu selenides, PbSO4, Ag, Au and BaSO4. The resulting Ag2Se, Ag3AuSe2, Se, Au, PbSO4, BaSO4, SnO2 and silicate-rich leach residue is dried and pelletized. It is subsequently roasted to convert the selenium to Ag2SeO3, volatile SeO2 and water soluble Na2SeO4. The roasted product, which was found to consist of Ag2Se, PbSe, PbSO4, BaSO4, Ag3AuSe2, Au and Sn02, is smelted and refined in a Dore furnace to produce a Dore metal that contains a (Ag,Au,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy together with traces of CuO and a Cu-Pb oxide phase. Parting plant mud shown to contain AgC1, Ag, Au, (Au,Ag,Pd), Ag2Cu2O3 and Ag20, and scrubber mud containing PbSO4 and AgC1 are also fed to the Dore furnace. The Dore furnace sequentially separates a silica slag which was found to consist of Ag, Sn02, BaSO4, Pb-Sb oxide, Fe-Sb-Ni-Cr oxide and a Pb-rich silicate phase, a soda-rich slag containing Na2CO3.H2O and Na2(Se,Te)03, and a niter slag containing Na2TeO3, Na2(Se,Te)03 and a Na-Te-Se-Pb-Ba-Cu oxide phase. The Dore metal is electrorefined in Moebius cells to yield high-purity silver and a gold mud which was shown to consist of a (Au,Ag,Pd,Cu,Pt) alloy and traces of CuO. Silver is leached from the gold mud and the resulting gold sand is cast into anodes and electrorefined in Wohlwill cells to produce pure gold.

"The Snow Lake massive sulphide deposits are hosted by Aphebian volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which in this area were deformed and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies during the Hudsonian orogeny. All the known deposits occur in felsic rocks a short distance below the contact with an overlying mafic rock unit.The Stall Lake copper deposit occurs close to the top of an explosive felsic volcanic sequence. Rocks stratigraphically underlying the deposit have been hydrothermally altered by the mineralizing fluids. The sulphides were probably deposited from submarine volcanic vent(s) on the flanks of a felsic dome. The ore has been tightly folded, flattened and elongated parallel to the northerly trending lineation of the surrounding rocks during the several periods of deformation. Strike lengths of the lenses range from 60 to 300 feet and plunge-to-strike ratios are as much as 15:1.Ore lenses I to 4 typically consist of massive coarse-grained pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. A stratigraphically higher lens differs in that it contains fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite, with an increase in sphalerite toward its hanging wall. The No.4 orebody has a distinct footwall alteration zone characterized by brecciation and abundant chlorite-staurolite- garnet schist, with minor kyanite, anthophyllite, cordierite and anhydrite, as well as sulphide minerals. Chemically, the alteration zone is distinguished from the unaltered felsic rocks by Na20 depletion and Mg-Fe enrichment"

"A recent information sheet from the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Labour was sent to all Ministry inspectors and engineers. The subject title was' 'Two Brakes on a Hoist Carrying Persons"" and it quotes mining regulation 699, sub-section 206(i):No hoist shall be used for the transporting of persons unless it has a braking system consisting of at least two sets of mechanical brakes to stop and hold the drum for the shaft conveyance transporting the persons.The intent of the regulation is that each of these brakes is to be set so that, individually, they can safely stop the drum carrying persons and also hold the drum without movement with the maximum manload.This can be achieved in the following ways: Single Drum Hoist-one brake on each side of the drum, one brake on the drum, one brake on the pinion shaft, where disc brakes are used two separate disc brake assemblies on the disc. Double Drum Hoist, brakes on companion drum can serve as backup brake only pinion brake with one drum unclutched.Friction Hoist, one brake on each side of drum As new hoists can be manufactured easily with a two-brake system, attention will be focused on retrofitting pinion brakes to older hoists.A brake mounted on a pinion shaft is designed purely as an emergency brake in the event of main brake failure , controls malfunction, and power loss."

"Continuous pressure filtration is a modern process for the mechanical dewatering of flotation concentrates of coal and similar coal slurries. This method will give a lower moisture content than classical vacuum filtration, the improvement lying in the range 5% to 15%. Eighteen coal slurries have been examined in this survey. They are representative of a wide spectrum of filtered slurries. IntroductionDuring the last five years, a number of coal slurries have been tested either in the laboratory or with a pilot plant. The test pressure ranged from one to six bar. The results have been evaluated by mean s of a computer. Determination of the filter capacity and the resulting moisture content and energy consumption has been made with respect to the continuous pressure filter, Amafilter construction-type KDF (Fig. I) . Standard sizes of these filters are 60 m2, 90 m2 and 120 m2.The continuous pressure filter is a horizontal filter with a level tank. Six filter axles are mounted on a rotating main shaft, each with a particular number of elements attached. The elements rotate on their axes and move along a circular trajectory. Periodically the elements submerge into and emerge out of the slurry. A constant air pressure is maintained above the suspension, thus providing the pressure gradient necessary for filtration. The filtrate together with the dewatering air flows through the elements into the hollow axle and out of the filter."

"It is quite likely that more than a handful of junior exploration companies will receive some startling news from their accountants this spring when 1989s tax returns are being prepared. These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

Experimentally, the Semi-Circular Bending Moment (SCB) fracture toughness test results of Basalt Specimens Under Illumination (BSUI) have shown reduction in fracture toughness and failure force as a result of micro-cracking. The fractographic investigation of BSUI confirms initiation and extension of micro-cracks. Determination of a relation between strength reduction (herein fracture toughness reduction) and density, location and orientation of thermo-mechanical induced cracks due to microwave radiation is critically important. Numerical modeling can bridge strength reduction and the density of thermal microcracks generated due to microwave radiation. Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) is a power tool for simulation of micro-crack initiation, coalescence into macroscopic fractures and failure mechanisms in brittle rock specimens under different stress regimes (herein combination of pure tensile stress due to SCB testing, and thermal stress due to microwave radiation). For this purpose, a DEM modeling of SCB testing of basalt using EDEM (i.e., a DEM based software). DEM models are calibrated according to results of experimental SCB testing as reported in previous papers. This paper first reviews some background data on SCB fracture toughness, and experimental results of fracture toughness of microwave treated SCBs. Then it proposes a new methodology for simulation and validation of rock samples exposed to microwave illumination with regard to experimental results, and discusses the correlation between fracture toughness of BSUIs and density of micro-cracks, which is attributed to applied microwave power and duration of illumination.

"IntroductionThe Highvale Mine is located 70 km west of Edmonton , Alberta on the south side of Lake Wabamun. It has been developed by TransAlta Utilities Corporation as a captive mine to supply fuel to two genera ting power plant s. The mine is owned by TransAlta and operated under contract by Manalta Coal. Within the mine permit area, TransAlta own s the right to mine 80% of the recoverable surface mineable coal.The planning process starts with the annually produced 25-year energy forecast which is provided by the Electric Utility Planning Council (EUPC). A 1983 forecast predicts an average annual increase in energy requirements of 4% over the next 25 years. Put another way, the requirement will double before the end of the century. A lar ge part of the base load generation of the Province of Alberta is provided by th e plants fueled from Highvale Mine. The Highvale Mine is therefore expected to maintain a high output over a long period of time.Mine PlanningMine planning is an ongoing, interative process that draws from many sources. All levels of planning draw from the same sources but du e to the different processes and objectives of each planning class, the degree of influence may differ. The planner becomes then a coordinator bringing together data and excerpts from several disciplines in groups. Generally, there are four classes of mining plan s; these are all used at the Highvale Mine (Table I)."

"The efficiency of operation and life of an advancing longwall coalface depends, to a great extent. on the face-end roof strata conditions and the stability of the gateroads. The factors that influence the rate of closure of gateroads are examined, in particular the gateside pack and the coal rib (crush) pillars. The performance of mechanized packing systems is briefly discussed. Gateroad deformation surveys were carried out at two coal mines to determine the influence of the rib pillar width on gateroad stability; also, the influence of the gateside pack on the immediate roof and floor strata is analyzed based on strata bed displacement measurements from instruments installed in the gateroad and pack-hole of a longwall advancing face operating in a thick seam (7.55 m). Concluding, an evaluation of the fac e-end systems examined is given and recommendations made f or the most suitable rib pillar width. face-end geometry and roof strata reinforcement.IntroductionKevword s: Coal mining, Pillars, Rib pillars, Ground control, Longwall mining, Gateroads , Packing systems, Roof control. The face-end region of a longwall advancing face is the center of mining activity, being the turn-around point for the coal cutting machine. and the place of gateroad formation and movement of special face-end supports. The design of face-end layouts can be aided by knowledge of strata control parameters, such as the effective loading of the immediate roof strata , convergence of the roof and floor, magnitude and distribution of fractures in the roof strata around the face-end , optimum placement of supports, coal seam thickness and strength characteristics, geometry of layout and interaction from neighbouring workings. Generally, the gateroad is formed by one of three face-end methods: (a) advanced headings, (b) in-line system (gateroad formed at the face) or (c) conventional ripping with or without stable elimination (also halfheading). The quality of gateroad is influenced principally by the face-end system employed, standard of gateside pack and width of pillar. A good standard of gateroad is generally achieved by employing the half-heading face-end system, the gateside pack and coal rib pillar having comparative support/ yield (stiffness factor) characteristics. However, the halfheading is often not favoured due to face operation restrictions."

In the last 30 years numerous mining plants have been developed in North America but only a handful of these have required freezing the area where the shaft was sunk. The most recent mine shaft to be sunk using this technique is located on an island off the coast of Louisiana. The project required the input and skills of numerous people in several companies, including the owner, engineers and contractors. The Cote Blanche installation is one of several mines in the area which extract salt from a dome which extends under the Gulf of Mexico. The geology of this area is, however, markedly different from others in the region because there is approximately 460 ft of water logged soil above the salt dome. Because it is not possible to sink a shaft in ground that is this soft, the overburden where the shaft is located must be frozen before excavation can take place. The Cote Blanche mine is a producing facility which was built in 1958 by the Carey Salt Company. The original facility included a 14 ft diameter production shaft and a 7 ft-8 in diameter service/ventilation/escape shaft. This system was installed by The Cementation Company. In 1996 the owner decided to improve both the mine ventilation and production hoisting system by installing a third shaft. This shaft would be designed to extract 650 tons per hour from a depth of 1600 ft and provide 500,000 cfm of ventilation to the mine at a maxium design pressure of 4 in WG. These parameters resulted in a requirement for a 16 ft finished inside diameter concrete lined shaft and a headframe designed as a pressure bulkhead. Because the mine would operate from one level only, the most efficient hoisting system for the application was determined to be a ground mounted koepe running on rope guides. With these criteria fixed Cote Blanche embarked on a program which would see construction start in June 1998 with the first salt produced in February 2001 at a cost of $US18M. The major players in the design and construction were G.L. Tiley & Associates Ltd., BLM Bharti Engineering, Freezewall Inc., Phillips Mining, Geotechnical and Grouting Inc., Don Hart Consulting and Dynatec International.

The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace (CL- furnace) for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. The conditions in the CL- furnace change its settling efficiency, resulting in high variability of copper losses in slag. Modifications of the operation and maintenance procedures for the CL-furnace have significantly and sustainably reduced the copper losses in Gresik smelter to below 0.7%. A series of flow patterns evaluation in the CL-furnace demonstrated how the chemical reactions and settling conditions of the CL-furnace has been improved by the new operating procedures. Settling mechanisms for the matte droplets in the CL-furnace is also discussed using image analysis of solidified slag. INTRODUCTION The Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting/Converting Process employs an electric furnace (CL- furnace) for settling the slag/matte mixture formed in the smelting furnace. Since the top-blowing in the S- furnace agitates the molten bath strongly, matte droplets are dispersed over the slag phase when melts flow out of the S-furnace. Thus, the CL-furnace has an important role to settle and recover matte droplets efficiently. Since many papers have ascribed major part of copper losses to matte droplets suspended in slag (Tanaka 2007; Genevski et al., 2008; Starodub et al., 2016), flow patterns of slag in the CL-furnace can affect greatly on the profitability of smelters which have adopted the Mitsubishi process. PROCESS DESCRIPTION Figure 1 illustrates the Mitsubishi process schematically. The Mitsubishi process is the only system for continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates and consists of 3 furnaces connected by enclosed launders those ensure the minimum emission of fugitives. In a smelting furnace (S-furnace) copper concentrates are fed with flux, oxygen-enriched air to form a mixture of slag and matte which cascades down to a slag-cleaning furnace (CL-furnace). The CL-furnace settle matte droplets in the mixture on the crucible from which matte is siphoned to a converting furnace (C-furnace), while discharging the cleaned slag (CL-slag). The C-furnace converts matte to blister copper by the top-blowing of oxygen- enriched air.

"The property of Francoeur Gold Mines, Limited, lies directly west of the Armfield mine in Beauchastel township, Abitibi district, and 12 miles west and slightly south of Noranda. The gold deposits are of particular interest because of their replacement character and close association with fault zones. The property was originally staked in 1923 following the discovery oi a mineralized zone near the eastern boundary. This became No. 1 orebody. Later discoveries in 1936 of No. 2 and No. 3 orebodies led to underground development and actual mining in July, 1938. A fourth orebody, No. 8, was found in 1939.The following is the production record up to December 31st, 1947:Beginning in September, 1944, ore was shipped to Noranda as siliceous flux, but late in 1946 milling of low-silica ore from No. 1 orebody was undertaken until operations were temporarily suspended in 1947.The four main ore deposits, Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 8, consist of siliceous ferrocarbonate and albite replacement bodies mineralized with fine pyrite and specularite in schistose fault zones in Keewatin volcanics. Barren to low grade quartz veins though present in some are uncommon, but small stringers of quartz are usually present wherever here and there visible gold is found. Nos. 1, 2, and 3 deposits lie in a major fault zone that extends completely across the property from west to east (over 7,000 feet) and dips N.40° to 50°, and are separated by intervals of 1,800 to 2,000 feet respectively. The fourth lies in a smaller fault zone striking east and dipping on the average 65°S.No. 1 orebody has been explored by mining to a depth of 500 feet, No. 2 to 400 feet, and No. 3 to slightly less than 300 feet . The greater part of No. 8 lies above a depth of 200 feet, but a raise has recently .been driven through from the west end of the 5th level of No. 1 to the 2nd level on No. 8 zone. Most of the ore of No. 8 zone above the 2nd level and of Nos. 2 and 3 above the 3rd levels has been removed."

"The properties of Base Metal Mining Corporation are in Yoho Park about 2 1/2 miles northeast of Field; British Columbia; on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway. There are actually two mines; the Monarch on mount Stephen and the Kicking Horse on mount Field; separated by the steep valley of Kicking Horse river. The outcrops of the orebodies range from 4; 900 feet to 5; 300 feet above sea-level. The concentrator is situated below the Monarch mine and is connected to the main portal by an aerial tramway. The ore from the Kicking Horse mine is conveyed by aerial tramway to a storage bin on the main highway and is then trucked to the concentrator.During the construction of the Canadian Pacific railway through Kicking Horse valley, galena float was found at the base of mount Stephen. The East Monarch outcrop was staked in 1894. The outcrop of the West Monarch ore body on the cliff face of mount Stephen was not discovered until 1916. The Kicking Horse orebodies on mount Field were discovered a few years later. In 1912, a 75-ton concentrator was erected, which operated at intervals until 1924. During this period approximately 42,000 tons were mined and milled, largely from the East Monarch orebody. In 1928, the Base Metal Mining Corporation, Limited, was formed to take over the Monarch and Kicking Horse mines. A 300-ton differential flotation concentrator was erected and production started in the autumn of 1929. In a very short time, however, the low price of metals forced the mill to shut down until August 1933. From 1929 to 1935, when the mill again ceased operation, a total of 256,500 dry tons of ore, averaging 1.59 oz. silver per ton, 9.7 per cent lead, and 12.6 per cent zinc, was mined and milled, largely from the West Monarch orebody. After a period of further underground development, the concentrator reopened in 1940 and is still in operation. "The Phoenix Camp, in the Boundary Creek district of southern British Columbia, produced before 1920 about 15 million tons of ore averaging more than l ·5 per cent copper, about 0.03 ounces per ton in gold, and 0·5 ounces per ton in silver. Attwood Copper Mines Ltd. conducted an exploration program in the Phoenix area from 1951to1953.Publications on the camp are listed in the bibliography. Brock's work was not sufficiently detailed to unravel the structural and stratigraphic pro bl.ems. The work of LeRoy and McNaughton is referred to later.The stratigraphic column is as follows:Tertiary.Midway Formation: Volcanics and hypabyssals; dacitic to basaltic flows, with associated dykes and sills of syenite (pulaskite in part) and augite porphyry.Jura-Cretaceous.Intrusives of quartz diorite and diorite (nearest outcrop two miles from Phoenix).Late Palaeozoic or Triassic (Attwood Series).Brooklyn Formation: Sharps tone conglomerate, limestone, grey-wacke and/ or andesitic tuff, with minor shale and basalt. Rawhide Formation: shale with minor conglomerate.Early Palaeozoic.Knob Hill Formation: Chert and andesite, with minor limestone, shale, and serpentine.This column differs from that of LeRoy in two important respects: (I) Attwood's work indicates that the Rawhide shale is basal to, rather than stratigraphically above, the Brooklyn formation. The shale contains conglomerate lenses, which become more abundant and thicker toward the top, and grades upward into Brooklyn conglomerate. Ripple marks indicate that the shale is right side up."

"IntroductionA STRIKING FEATURE of the past twenty years has been the application of organized scientific and industrial research to problems of national defence and security and to the development of our natural resources. It has been shown that effective research improves public health, increases the productivity of land, makes mineral wealth available, and increases the efficiency and productive capacity of industry. Alberta is a region bounteously provided with a variety of natural resources, and the Province has entered into a period of unprecedented industrial development. There is, surely, a great opportunity to bring scientific research to bear •on problems associated with the development of these natural resources.I propose to spend a little time discussing the term 'research', indicating something of the various types of research and those fields which appear to •be the particular responsibility of government bodies. It seems logical, also, to outline the course of development .of industrial and scientific research in the English-speaking world during the past twenty-odd years.Research is investigation, examination, or enquiry, and involves the application of human thought, and actions, to the unfolding of new knowledge. That knowledge may assume a variety of forms. Fundamental knowledge may be new facts related to some form of matter, to motion, space, thought, and so on. Those engaged in applying the natural sciences have no monopoly on research as this term is equally valid for those engaged in obtaining, sorting, relating, and interpreting the facts of history, literature."

This paper discusses ore handling systems in shafts. These are considered from the loading facility at shaft bottom all the way through to the discharge mechanism in the headframe. These systems will be discussed from the following perspective: i. Intrinsic safety of the systems ii. The efficacy of the systems to perform consistently iii. The maintainability of the systems iv. Overall system cycle times Particular emphasis is placed on the following specific areas: 1. The Shaft Bottom Loading Facilities The various shaft loading systems currently in use are discussed, the selection parameters surrounding these are quantified and the specific selection criteria are outlined. 2. The Various Skip Configurations In this section the various skip configurations in use around the world will be described and the specific design details associated with these will be highlighted. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems will be compared and the overall efficacy of these will be discussed. 3. The effect of the loading and skip configurations on the Load Cycle Times. The overall cycle time which can be achieved by a shaft system is strongly dependant by the speed and efficiency with which the ore can be loaded and transported out of the mine. The potential of the various systems to be optimized will be discussed. The emphasis of this paper is to highlight the lessons which have been learned with respect to ore transport system design and provide a common basis against which these can be compared in future applications.

"In 2012 diesel engine exhaust (DEE) was classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is one of the most common workplace carcinogens internationally. We estimate that approximately 2.4% of lung cancers (n=560) and a suspected 2.7% of bladder cancers (n=200) are attributable to occupational exposure to DEE annually in Canada. High levels of exposure to DEE in mining results in a disproportionate number of cancers in this sector (approximately 220 lung and 20 suspected bladder cancers annually). These could be prevented by reducing the number of workers exposed and level of exposure. KEYWORDS Bladder cancer, Diesel engine exhaust, Economic burden, Lung cancer, Mining, Occupational cancer, Prevention, Regulation INTRODUCTION Diesel engine exhaust is a complex mixture of gases and particulates containing known and suspected carcinogens such as benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals. Approximately 900,000 Canadians are exposed to diesel engine exhaust at work, making it the most prevalent occupational lung carcinogen in Canada (CAREX Canada). Diesel engine exhaust is recognized as one of the most common workplace carcinogens in the world, but its classification as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was relatively recent. In 2012, after decades of mounting evidence, diesel engine exhaust was upgraded from a probable (IARC Group 2A) to a definite human carcinogen (IARC Group 1) (IARC, 2014). The IARC evaluation was based on strong evidence in humans for an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as strong evidence in animal studies. The key human evidence considered by IARC was from epidemiologic studies of workers in truck transportation, rail transportation, and mining industries, where the use of diesel engines is widespread. These studies provided strong sufficient evidence for an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as limited evidence for bladder cancer. The human studies used particulate matter, generally measured as elemental carbon (EC) or total carbon, as a surrogate for diesel engine exhaust to assess the risk associated with level of exposure. The animal studies reviewed by IARC showed sufficient evidence for cancer with exposure to whole diesel exhaust and the particulate matter fraction of diesel exhaust, but not for the gas phase components."
