Effective blast fragmentation is essential in underground mining, as it directly influences downstream processing efficiency and operational expenses. This study investigates the application of Non-Newtonian Fluids (NNF) as stemming materials, presenting a novel method to enhance energy confinement, minimize environmental impact, and optimize blast performance. NNFs exhibit shear-thickening behaviour, enabling them to transition between fluid-like and solid-like states under stress, which renders them suitable for regulating explosive gas ejection during blasting. Field trials were performed by Vale Base Metals in Thompson, Manitoba, in their underground nickel mine to evaluate conventional slag stemming against NNF-based stemming in production-scale blasts. Emulsion explosives were employed, and blast performance was assessed through velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements, vibration monitoring, and AI-assisted fragmentation analysis using WipFrag. Preliminary results indicate that NNF stemming improves fragmentation, resulting in a reduction of D50 by as much as 38%, enhances energy confinement, and may decrease the incidence of hole plugging and re-drilling in subsequent blasts. This study presents an alternative to conventional stemming methods, highlighting potential advantages for enhanced safety, efficiency, and sustainability in blasting operations. Additional research and field trials are necessary to improve implementation protocols and facilitate the widespread adoption of this unique method in the mining sector.

New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones.

A process scheme has been devised to improve the silver recovery and the grade of concentrates from the scavenger concentrate of a silver ore flotation circuit. Based on modal analysis studies it was found that silver sulfide minerals in the scavenger concentrate were associated as simple binary particles and finely disseminated in sulfide and non-sulfide gangues. Fine grinding of the concentrate improved the grade-recovery curve of silver to a very limited extent owing to heterocoagulation between liberated fine silver sulfides and coarse particles of gangue. This heterocoagulation phenomenon was prevented by grinding the concentrate in the presence of the dispersing reagent sodium hexametaphosphate. The silver grade-recovery curve was improved by practicing. before the conventional flotation step, a selective aggregation step for the fine silver sulfide particles using the non-polar oil kerosene, the sulthydryl collector Aerophine 3418 and conditioning the pulp under strong agitation conditions.

ABSTRACT A significant factor in evaluating bitumen recovery from an oil sands mine is the particle size distribution (PSD). Increased understanding of mined ore quality and improvement in predictions of recovery can be achieved through PSD modeling. This paper addresses PSD modeling using geostatistics. PSDs may be described using many discrete particle sizes, making this a challenge. The approach parameterizes PSDs with a few statistics. A lookup table is used to reconstruct the PSDs based on models of the statistics. The workflow is applied to Total E&P Canada’s Joslyn Lease and yields good results that reproduce input statistics without introducing artifacts.

An on-line visualization technique and methodology was developed to investigate the role of fine sphalerite (< 10 um) aggregation in flotation. The images of particle aggregates under different operating conditions were recorded and analyzed. The effect of impeller design on particle aggregation was demonstrated. This difference was not mainly due to the energy input into the system, but due to the resultant hydrodynamic conditions created by the impeller and their effect on particle interactions. The recorded image showed that adding fine silica (- 5 um) did not interfere with fine sphalerite aggregation, thereby showing no effect on the sphalerite recovery. Effect of the enlarged aggregate size on increasing flotation recovery was confirmed. Although Malvern Mastersizer produced consistently lower estimates of aggregate size than those by the image analysis, both methods responded to the changes in operating conditions in the similar trend. It was shown from this study that on-line visualization technique is a powerful tool for studying fine particle aggregation and morphology in the context of diagnosis for the flotation separation.

"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Analysis of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) parameters via the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT) has been obtained for SENT specimens of AM6OB magnesium alloy. It is found that the ratio of initial crack length to initial monotonic plastic zone size is one of the critical factors in establishing the limit of using LEFM concepts. If this ratio is below a certain limit (i.e. when crack lengths are small in comparison to the plastic zone size), loss of similitude stress intensity factor range would occur. This ratio, therefore describes the limit below which the use of LEFM would no longer be admissible. In this study, the above limit was established for AM6OB magnesium alloy. In addition, fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted to ascertain the fatigue response of the alloy and determination of the coefficients of Paris model.

Coal Reserves The Crowsnest Pass coal fields form part of a greater area which comprises the Inner Foothills belt of the Alberta coal fields and the southeastern coal fields of British Columbia. The most valuable and most extensive reserves of the bituminous coals of Canada are concentrated in this?area, of which the Crowsnest Pass fields form an important part. The extent of these coal reserves together with those of the rest of Canada were recently studied by the Geological Survey of Canada for the Royal Commission on Coal of 1946 (1). Quotin from the report, it is of interest to note that, prior to this work, the most widely known, and in fact the only Canadian-wide estimates of, coal reserves of Canada available to the Commission were those prepared by Dr. Dowling in 1913 (2). At that time it was estimated that Canada&apos;s reserves of coal were over twelve hundred billion tons. The more recent estimates of mineable coal for the whole of Canada are of the order of 10 per cent of that figure and are reported. as 99 billion tons, which is further reduced to 40 billion tons on the basis of the estimation of recoverable coal. This considerable divergence in estimated reserves is explained in part by the big difference in the bases of measurements. For example, in the original report, seams of one foot occurring at a depth of 4,000 feet were included in the estimates.

"Ore deposits containing rare earth elements normally contain small amounts of the radioactive elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U). These are the naturally-occurring isotopes U238, U235, and Th232 (and associated decay-series daughter products) that are ubiquitous in nature, and that contribute a small percentage of the natural background radiation exposure encountered by humans. The presence of these radioactive materials in the ore deposit creates potential hazards to human health and the environment that must be dealt with properly in the mining, processing, and refining of the ores, as well as management of waste streams and residues. This paper presents an overview of the environmental and safety issues associated with U and Th, with particular emphasis on rare earth mining, processing, and refining projects; the regulatory approaches followed to ensure that rare earth deposits are developed, operated, closed, and decommissioned safely; and the development of information during the project predevelopment work and permitting processes that feed into the design, operation, and closure of tailings impoundments and milling/separation/refining facilities. Case studies will be presented subject to the availability of relevant public information. INTRODUCTIONNearly all ore deposits containing economically-recoverable rare earth minerals also contain small amounts of the radioactive isotopes for the elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U) and their associated radioactive decay products. Therefore, the handling and management of these materials in mining and mineral processing operations must be performed so that workers and the environment are protected from harm from Th and/or U (and their radioactive decay products), just as they must be protected from any other potentially harmful constituents present in the ore or introduced in processing. Examples of these might include ores with high sulfide content, which may pose a risk of acid rock drainage, or chemicals used in ore processing and metals production.The purpose of this paper is to present information on how rare earth mining and processing projects with ores containing Th and/or U can be developed, operated, and decommissioned safely according to applicable regulations intended to protect worker health & safety and the environment.It should be noted that some countries are considering developing Th as a feedstock for producing nuclear energy, which could have some effect on future development of rare earth ore deposits. To avoid confusion, that issue is not discussed in this paper."

"Over the last ten years, several developments have been undertaken to conceive a machine capable of carrying out simultaneously all the mining tasks in hard rock deposits: cutting, mucking, hauling, ground support and dust control.The main advantages of continuous mining over conventional drill and blast is the elimination of the cyclical nature of the actual methods. Other advantages sought are improved stability of mine openings, higher productivity, lower costs, and a cleaner and safer mining environment. Noranda has con-tributed to these developments in a major way. As a member of HDRK, Noranda participated in the development of two mechanical continuous mining machines; the TM60 and the Wirth. Noranda also undertook a development of its own based on the utilization of electricity to break rock. This technology is called plasma blasting (PBT). The concept of plasma blasting is illustrated in Figure 1.When the operating voltage is reached (18kV), the energy is released through a high current switch (500k A) into a coaxial powercable. It is then delivered to the tip of an electrode inserted into a drill hole which is filled with an electrolyte (water). When the energy reaches the electrolyte, it is instantaneously transformed into a high temperature, high pres-sure plasma that produces a shock wave capable of breaking rock(1).After initial testing of the plasma blasting technology in the lab and in the feld, two experimental platforms were constructed. The first one, a test bench, was erected at the Noranda Technology Centre in Pointe Claire, Quebec.(2)The second one is a rock breaker prototype based on a standard diesel-powered carrier (Fig. 2). Each platform was equipped with a 300 kJ pulsed-power module.In 1993, the rock breaker prototype was used for an extensive series of tests in the field. During that campaign, over 700 oversized boulders were blasted. The results of the tests demonstrated that more durable components for PBT were needed. The test bench was then used to successfully develop and test long-lasting components (probe, switch, cable, connector) that can be adapted to industrial platforms leading to the commercialization of the technology."

Micromixing of the fluid and the particulate phases in a continuous gibbsite precipitator was investigated for three different micromixing states, namely maximum mixedness (MM), complete segregation (CS), and maximum mixedness of the fluid but complete segregation of the particulates (MMF-CSP). The influence of the micromixing on continuous precipitation of gibbsite was studied at different precipitation conditions via simulation. Three different cases were considered with respect to the precipitation kinetics: (1) gibbsite secondary nucleation is favoured with slow crystal growth and agglomeration rates; (2) gibbsite crystal agglomeration and growth are dominant mechanisms with secondary nucleation suppressed; and (3) gibbsite crystal growth is the only relevant phenomenon. Simulation results for the cases (1) and (3) showed that the crystalline products for both the MM and MMF-CSP micromixing states were very similar, but the product obtained from the CS micromixing state was considerably different. This indicates that at those precipitation conditions the fluid micomixing has the dominant effect on the product properties, and the particulates micromixing effect is insignificant. However, when operated under the conditions of fast crystal growth and agglomeration kinetics, i.e. case (2), both the fluid and the particulates micromixing were found to affect the precipitation process, resulting in a significantly different product. "Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. Introduction Gold holds an important place among the mineral products of Manitoba. In value, it ranks second only to copper, which in 1931 attained first place. The gold production increased from 23,189 fine ounces in 1930 to 102,969fine ounces in 1931. The production for 1930, worth $479,359, came almost entirely from the Central Manitoba mine. The production for 1931 was worth $2,128,558, of which $1,509,018 came from the Flin Flon mine, $528,951 from the Central Manitoba, and $83,497 from the Sherritt Gordon. The Gem Lake mine and some prospects produced $7,785. The total output of gold in Manitoba, from the first recorded production in 1917 to the end of 1931, is estimated at 178,669 fine ounces, valued at $3,693,332. The production for 1932 promises to reach a new high record, due chiefly to the stepping-up of tonnage at the Flin Flon plants and the coming into production of the San Antonio mill in May. History The Manitoba Act, constituting Manitoba a Province of the Dominion, was passed in 1870 and provided for the vesting in the Crown of all un-granted or waste lands of Manitoba, as well as for the administration of these lands by the Dominion of Canada for the purposes of the Dominion "subject to, and except and so far as the same may be affected by, the conditions and stipulations contained in the agreement for the surrender of Rupert&apos;s Land by the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company to the Crown". Included in these waste lands were large areas later prospected and staked out as mineral lands. Up to the year 1912, that vast territory extending from the 12th base line to the 60th parallel of latitude, and from the Saskatchewan boundary to Hudson bay, was part of the District of Keewatin. Although added to Manitoba in 1912, the administration of its mineral lands also remained vested in the Dominion, so that all mineral lands within the Province upon which deposits of gold ore have been found were disposed of and administered by the Mineral Lands Division, Department of the Interior, until the transfer of the natural resources to the Province of Manitoba, on July 15th, 1930.

"A growing public awareness of work-related diseases such as pneumoconiosis and the impact of this awareness on legislative bodies and on the skilled labour market are reasons why the Canadian mining industry must consider dust control of top-drawer importance. Measurements and standards related to the hazard are necessary to control a dust situation and to avoid excessive risk. The author discusses some of the methods of measurement, standards proposed and terminology used in this developing technology. The purpose primarily is to give a better understanding of the basic advances achieved by those who have applied current knowledge with a measure of success."

This paper deals with the drilling and blasting methods employed at the Cassiar mine, which is located just south of the B.C.-Yukon border. It covers both the "pit" and "peak" mining operations. Specific problems, such as working in frozen ground, are discussed, and the breaking characteristics of the various rock formations are outlined. A model of solid oxide fuel cell AC impedance behaviour has been developed and is used to simulate the frequency response of a single cell with and without mechanical damage. The results indicate that the presence of mechanically induced damage within the components of a solid oxide fuel cell can be detected by comparing the frequency response of the undamaged cell with that of a cell in which in-plane cracking or delamination has occurred. The presence of such defects manifests itself as a new semicircle in the Nyquist impedance diagram of the full cell. A parametric study reveals the resolution capabilities of the method in terms of the geometrical characteristics of the defects.

"The Lone Gull discovery of Urangesellschaft Canada Limited was made in 1974 as a result of extensive exploration activities for unconformity related uranium deposits in the Baker Lake area of the Northwest Territories. The structurally controlled mineralization is hosted in Aphebian metasediments and intrusive granitic stocks located approximately 2 km south of the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic Aphebian and the Middle Proterozoic The/on Formation.The original discovery was made with a helicopter mounted radiometric system during systematic prospection over the unconformity. Diamond drilling was first carried out in 1977 and continued, with an interruption in 1981, to the present. A total of 25,500 metres and 199 holes have been drilled and outlined three ore zones. Preliminary geological reserves are estimated at some 16 million kgs. U30 8 at an average grade of approximately 0.4%.IntroductionUrangesellschaft initially entered exploration in Canada as a participant in joint ventures in 1968, and was incorporated in Canada in 1974 as Urangesellschaft Canada Limited. Subsequently, UG was among the first companies to apply exploration criteria developed from the Athabasca Basin, namely the Middle Proterozoic unconformity over Archean/ Aphebian basement, for selection of exploration targets in the geologically similar Thelon Basin.The Baker Lake area in the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories was selected from the extensive Thelon Basin because it had the best accessibility (Fig. 1). The hamlet of Baker Lake located close to the geographical centre of Canada, is largely an Inuit settlement with a population of approximately 1,100 inhabitants. The distance from Baker Lake to the Lone Gull property is about 80 km. Baker Lake is connected to the tidewater of Hudson's Bay via Chesterfield inlet and is serviced by scheduled domestic flights several times weekly from Churchill, Manitoba, about 650 km to the south."

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba&apos;s foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here.
