"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA) were used to characterize chemically the gold complex adsorbed on activatedcarbon from a solution containing 102mglL Au and 0.5 giL thiourea. This paper also considers the gold chloride and the gold cyanide systems. The results indicate gold is adsorbed on activated carbon from the thiourea solution as the gold (I) thiourea complex, i.e. Au [CS (NH) 2];' Other gold species such as metallic gold were not detected on the carbon support. These results also suggest the elution of the gold (I) thiourea complex can be performed with high recovery.

Turkey is the main boron minerals producing country in the world. The most important boron minerals are tincal, colemanite and ulexite. All mining, beneficiation and handling operations generate fines which cause ecological and economical problems. Utilization of this accumulated material requires both upgrading and agglomeration. The aim of this research was to exploit the ulexite fines by improving their grade and size. Attrition-scrubbing followed by washing and screening was employed for upgrading the fines. It was found that the grade can be increased from 23-25% B2O3 to 29% B2O3 with 73% recovery. Briquetting was applied as the size enlargement process. During the briquetting, the effect of moisture content, pressure, amount and type of binder, and drying on the quality of briquettes were investigated. The tests showed the possibility of production of strong briquettes by adding water alone, but the briquettes had no resistance to abrasion and water. Binders, namely boric acid and borax have been added to improve the properties of briquettes. The results showed that the compressive strengths and abrasive resistances of briquettes obtained with both binders were acceptable. However, the briquettes have no water resistance properties.

THE geology of the Copper Mountain mine has been ably described by Dr. Victor Dolmage in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey. Reference is invited to that paper for a more extended description of the geology of the ore deposits than will be given here. The important orebodies of the mine occur in fragmencal volcanic rocks, parallel with and adjacent to the gabbro of the Copper Mountain stock. In the mine area, the contact strikes N.45°W. and dips either vertical or steeply co the southwest. For a distance of 500 feet or more from the contact, the fragmental rocks have been intensely metamorphosed both dynamically and hydrothermally. The dynamic effects are reflected in the foliation and fracturing parallel with the contact, which occurs throughout the mine, and the volcanic rocks within this foliated zone are, in places, highly schistose. Superimposed upon thi.s structure is a system of fine, straight, parallel frac-tures that strike nearly normal to the foliation (and contact) and dip between 65° and 75° to the north; it is with this last-described fracture system that the ore minerals are structurally associated. The fractures are mineralized with bornite and, to a considerably less extent, with chalcopyrite and some pyrite. A notable characteristic is the extreme fineness of the fractures; even in high-grade ore they are rarely larger than pencil lines. The tenor of the ore, therefore, varies directly with the fracture spacing. Replacemcnr of the host-rock between two or more fractures, varying in degree from finely disseminated sulphides to masses of nearly solid bornite up to 18 inches wide and 2 to 3 feet long, is not uncommon in the higher-grade portions of the orebodies. Two structural types of orebody are recognized in local nomenclature: the 'contact' orebodies, so-called because they occur along the contact; and 'outlying' orebodics, which are enclosed in the volcanics. The former arc tabular or lenticular bodies elongated along the strike and dip of the contact. The 'outlying' orebodies are coniform, chimney-like masses roughly elliptical in plan; with depth, their roots plunge at steep angles toward the contact. All of the orebodies are cut by a number of light-coloured granophyre and felsite porphyry dykes. These dykes-the so-called 'mine' dykes -enter the mine area from the north, curve gently southeasterly across the orebodies, and then cross the contact into the gabbro at the south end of the mine. All the dykes dip vertical to steeply east.

Magnesium, the lightest structural metal, has not yet been considered as a serious contestant for automotive use due to its weaknesses in corrosion. Electroless nickel-boron alloys are well known for their corrosion resistance and hardness. An electroless nickel-boron layer was successfully deposited first on the chemical conversion pre-treated AZ31 alloy and also on the Ni-P coating which was deposited on the conversion coating. The electroless bath contained nickel sulphate and dimethylamine borane (DMAB) as main salts and the samples were activated by a 5 g/L AgNO3 solution before the electroless plating process. The presence of the conversion coating between the nickel coating and the AZ31 substrate acted as a barrier and prevented corrosion of the alloy. The morphology of the nickel-boron layer was studied using SEM. The crystal structure and the composition were examined by EDS and the hardness was measured. The corrosion behaviour of the nickel-boron layer deposited on the conversion coating and on the Ni-P coating was studied using potentiodynamic polarization in a 0.5M NaC1 solution. A saturated standard calomel electrode was used as a reference electrode. The results show that the nickel-boron coatings had a significantly better corrosion resistance than the AZ31.

In recent years, with the emergence of Geometallurgy, a great effort has been made to characterize ore resources as early and accurately as possible, to allow better design and a more efficient operation of mineral processing circuits. In this context, core logging plays an important role, since drill cores provide the first insight into the ore characteristics. However, to satisfy geometallurgical requirements, traditional core logging does not suffice. New tools and methodologies need to be developed for the automation of core logging and the acquisition of mineralogical data better related to mineral processing performances. In this paper, a methodology for the geometallurgical characterization of drill cores is proposed, based on the drill core textural patterns. Textural pattern is defined here as the macroscopic spatial arrangement of minerals. The Mont-Wright iron ore deposit (Quebec, Canada) is used as a case study. The first part of this work aimed at analyzing the potential link between the iron ores textural patterns observed in drill cores and their response to ore processing, namely comminution and concentration. Preliminary results show similar performances in terms of energy consumption and heavy liquid separation for samples showing the same textural pattern. In the second part, this work seeks to develop a methodology for the automated identification of drill core textural patterns by the application of digital image analysis and discriminant function analysis. The results obtained show that this methodology is able to discriminate between the textural patterns identified at Mont-Wright with a good rate of success. Therefore, this work lays the foundation for the development of a new drill core characterization tool, which would allow for the early prediction of the iron ore behaviour during mineral processing through the identification of drill core textural patterns.

Industrial mineral production in Alberta, worth $468 million in 1997, comes from a dozen types of industrial minerals, mined by about 400 producers. Cement and lime from Paleozoic limestone formations exposed along the Rocky Mountains account for the greatest production value. Sand andgravel is the primary source ofmineral aggregate. Almost two-thirds of this aggregate is consumed in the Edmonton and Calgary regions. Sulphur produced at 48 sour gas processing plants and two oil sands plants was valued at $84.8 million in 1997 and accounted for 80% ofCanadian sulphur production. Four companies solution mine the Elk Point salt beds to produce chlor-alkali chemicals, industrial salt and sodium chlorate. Natural brine is also produced as a dust control product. Al $22 million, peat moss is a major industrial mineral product in Alberta. Other minerals with noteworthy production include shale, stone, silica and ammolite. The commodities with the greatest development potential are diamond, silica and oil sands tailings by-product minerals.

"Minntac is a taconite mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located near the town of Mountain Iron, Minnesota, U.S.A. It is totally owned and operated by USX Corporation and represents its largest source of domestic iron units. Minntac began producing fluxed pellets in 1988 and has produced both acid and fluxed pellets since then. This paper compares the acid and fluxed pellets produced at Minntac. It reviews modifications that have been made to the plant flowsheet and discusses areas recognized for improvement since the beginning of fluxed pellet production. It also comments briefly on the performance of Minntac fluxed pellets in USX blast furnaces and the future of fluxed pellets at Minntac.IntroductionMinntac was built in three steps with each step designed to produce 6 million long tons of acid pellets per year. The actual production has varied though. Figure I shows the production by year at Mirmtac. Step I began production in 1967, Step 2 in 1972 and Step 3 in 1978. Mirmtac produced 16.5 million tons in 1979 but only 3.5 million tons in 1982 when the facility was shut down for six months because of the lack of demand for pellets. Since the initial start up, Mirmtac has produced over 200 million long tons of pellets. Until 1987, all the pellets produced were ""acid"" pellets. In 1987, equipment to produce ""fluxed"" pellets was installed and tested. In 1988, full scale production of fluxed pellets began."

"The Swayze gold mine is an Archean vein deposit in northern Ontario. The veins are superimposed on a conjugate joint system and are contained within an anastomosing alteration envelope in a metadiorite body. Reserves were estimated on the basis of fire assays of channel samples and car load samples from underground mine openings, surface and underground diamond drilling and surface trenching. A semi-variogram constructed from channel samples along one of the drifts yielded a horizontal, regionalized influence of approximately 9.0 m. Common industry practice has been to use 6.1 m for similar deposits in Ontario. Proven ore was defined from underground openings. The maximum extrapolation distance for proven ore along strike and dip from a data point is taken to be 6.1 m. Probable ore is extrapolated 7.6 m from a data point in a mine opening or from a drill intersection. Possible mineralization is based on geological continuity one-half the distance to a neighbouring data point.The mineral inventory estimate of 1.45 million tonnes at a grade of4.8 g Au/tonne gives an excellent outline of the geology of the deposit. The deposit contains 313 000 tonnes of ore reservesat a fully diluted grade of6.9 g Au/tonne. These figures include dilution for several reasons: (I) a 2.1 m mining width is used rather than the more typical 1.5 m width to allow for over break because of the shallow dip of some vein zones; (2) over break is allowed for adjacent to major unmineralized dykes; and (3) grams of gold are deleted from estimates to allow for the mining of unavoidable minor dykes.A personal computer with off-the-shelf software was used to compile 712 geologically defined ore blocks and sort them into a number of revealing categories. The computer was used to perform grade sensitivity tests, as well as to evaluate depth potential. Hopefully, the reiterative aspect of the method has randomized the errors and helped to cancel their effects."

We investigate the relationship between corporate financial performance (CFP) and environmental and social performance (CSP) in a sample (n=165) of large, publicly traded U.S. mining and oil and gas firms. Using optimally scaled principal components analysis to generate aggregate measures of CSP strengths and concerns, we find higher concerns are related to higher volatility of unexpected earnings and discount rates. Furthermore, these earnings shocks are more likely to be negative as concerns increase. Decomposing this relationship shows that negative environmental performance dominates proactive environmental management as a driver of unexpected earnings, but proactive community efforts increase the magnitude of earnings shocks. We document some evidence of the strategic use of CSR, with those firms that have greater risk investing more proactively in CSR.

Caletones Smelter, Division El Teniente of Codelco Chile, has used Teniente Converter (TC) as the only smelting unit since November 2000. The modernization project considered the shutdown of the last reverberatory furnace, the installation of the fourth Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace, the installation of a new fluidized bed dryer and the modification of the concentrate injection system into TC. The modernization project and related investments allowed for the increase of the smelting capacity up to 1.25 million t of concentrate annually.Next stage of the smelter expansion in the year 2004 considered the increase of the smelting capacity up to 1.44 million t/year. The expansion required technology modernization and the installation of the new equipment, such as concentrate injection system, oxygen plant, fluidized bed dryer and storage bin. Currently the annual smelting capacity is about 1.35 million t of copper concentrate, being limited by sulphuric acid plant treatment capacity. This paper presents the technology and production evolution in the Caletones Smelter in the years 2000 - 2006, demonstrating the potential of development and competitiveness of Teniente Converter as world-wide recognized smelting/converting reactor.

A GPS-based traffic awareness and collision avoidance system has been implemented at mines with long, narrow access roads to help avoid accidents involving two approaching vehicles or vehicles following too close. A simple display in the cab of each outfitted vehicle gives an indication of oncoming traffic and a voice announcement indicates the type of vehicle that is coming as far out as 300 meters. Advanced warning of approaching vehicles is increasing driver awareness, especially around blind corners and in adverse weather such as heavy fog, snow, or rain. Speeding alarms have also been implemented and are especially critical as a vehicle approaches reduced speed areas near single-lane bridges or tight curves. A description of the system, safety improvements seen since its introduction, and implementation challenges will be discussed.

THE mineral industry of Canada relies heavily upon the talent of its technical men. It is vital to the well-being of the industry that its supply of young, trained men be adequate. At the present time, the industry is acquiring only 200 new graduates a year. The shrinking supply is far below present and future requirements. Other industries and research organizations are competing for engineers and scientists. Dr. J. B. Mawdsley (1), Past-President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, has recently outlined a program designed to attack the problem. Dr. J'. C. Sproule (2), another former President of the Institute, has stated that: "The need for selection of trainee material is commonly recognized, but little is done about it." The following paper contains a short discussion of occupational interests, and outlines research, using psychological knowledge and measuring techniques, aimed at the identification of desirable recruits for the mineral industry.

"A process of leaching niobium oxide from pyrochlore concentrate using hydrofluoric acid is described. Variables such as acid concentration, temperature, reaction time, solid/acid ratio, agitation speed and particle size are correlated to the recovery of niobium oxide.The relatively low activation energy (1,86 Kcal/mole) and the dependence of reaction rate on agitation suggest that the process is diffusion controlled. The optimum conditions for extracting niobium oxide from the leach solution, using either methyl isobutyl ketone or tributyl phosphate have been determined.IntroductionMost of the commercial production of niobium and tantalum has been derived from the treatment of columbite - tantalite minerals.In recent years (1960) , pyrochlore mineral has been found to be an alternate source of niobium . This mineral varies widely in composition and contains in addition to the main elements of calcium , sodium and niobium, some tantalum, fluorine, rare earth elements, titanium, alkali an d alkaline earth elements.It is well known that the province of Quebec possesses several pyrochlore niobium deposits totalling approximately 151 million ton s at an average 0.45% niobium oxide(1). One of the deposits, the St-Honor carbonatite, was brought into production by Niobec Inc. in 1976. Flotation o f this material produces a concentrate of about 60% Nb205(2).In view of an expanding niobium market in recent years and the presence of large niobium deposits in the province, a research and development program was initiated at the Centre de Recherches Miner ales to evaluate known processes for the separation of niobium and tantalum from each other as well as their purification . Some work has also been undertaken at the CRM to develop an improved extraction process. T his work will be the subject of further communication s."

"The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. "Recent changes in regulations and scientific advances concerning selenium bioaccumulation have placed greater importance on non-biological treatment systems for selenium control. Mining wastewater contains hexavalent selenium (selenate) as the predominant aqueous species and possibly small amounts of tetravalent selenium (selenite). Non-biological removal of selenite is accomplished readily and cost effectively by ferric co-precipitation and adsorption using ferric oxyhydroxides sourced from ferric salts or iron anodes in electrocoagulation cells. Selenate on the other hand is difficult to remove. It is often incorrectly assumed that electrocoagulation is suitable for removing both selenite and selenate. Selenate removal efficiency by electrocoagulation is low and the amount of waste residue produced high. In contrast, BioteQ’s Selen-IX™ process removes selenate very efficiently and produces a much smaller amount of stable residue. The process combines selective ion exchange with electro-reduction of selenate in electrocells that physically resemble electrocoagulation cells but are designed and operated differently. This paper summarizes four years of pilot scale demonstration on a wide range of mine waters and discusses the key benefits and limitations of Selen-IX™. The pros and cons of combining ion exchange with electro-reduction in comparison to direct electro-reduction of selenate are also reviewed.INTRODUCTION Selenium in Mining and Mineral Processing Effluents Similar to sulphate and metals, selenium presence in mining and mineral processing wastewater originates from minerals contained in the mined deposits. Therefore, no organoselenium species are typically present in these kinds of waters and inorganic species including selenite (SeO32-), selenate (SeO42) and elemental selenium account for the majority, if not all, selenium present in these streams. Elemental selenium is not always present in mine water but is often contained in smelter wastewater. To comply with new environmental regulations, a successful water treatment plant must remove selenium from all these forms effectively and economically without generating by-products that are difficult to dispose of or manage. Elemental selenium can be dealt with using filtration or gravity separation in clarifiers often assisted by flocculants and/or coagulants. Mine impacted waters typically contain other forms of suspended solids which are removed from water in this way. Once the solids are removed, the selenium species that remain untreated are the dissolved forms. In mining waters this is mostly selenate with small fraction of selenite. In smelter wastewater, the majority could be selenite. It is well established that tetravalent selenium is readily removed from water by using ferric iron co-precipitation at pH > 4 (NAMC SWG, 2010). Ferric hydroxide/ferrihydrite solids act as the adsorbent for tetravalent selenium when it is in one of the ionic forms of biselenite or selenite. This treatment for tetravalent selenium is highly efficient. Therefore, tetravalent selenium removal is generally not an issue and is often easily incorporated into lime neutralization or unit operations such as electrocoagulation used for removing other metals present in mine impacted waters. Another option of dealing with tetravalent selenium is sulphide precipitation in acidic pH which produces SeS2 and can separate selenite from other metals and/or sludge produced at neutral to alkali pH."

Aluminum alloys are widely used in modern industry. Tubes and hollow shapes give great opportunities for structural purposes as well as fluid transport due to their stiffness and lightness, Extrusions on a mandrel or through a bridge die, that requires splitting of the billet with re-welding, produce hollow shapes with varied contours, fins and multiple cavities. Moving and stationary mandrels, mandrel lubrication, tooling for ribbed-tube heat exchangers, and for drilling pipes are considered. Bridge dies can be classified by the bridge position relative to the die face, by mandrel support structure, and by assembly type, The main parameters influencing the quality of the die-welded seams are considered, The difficulties of extruding various alloys through bridge dies are discussed in terms of metallurgical factors, Some approaches to the calculation of the stresses in a bridge are presented.

Elevated concentrations of ammonia nitrogen is a common characteristic of mine impacted water and generally results from the dissolution of undetonated explosives (i.e., Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil and emulsion explosives) by contact water. Several active water treatment technologies are commercially available to remove ammonia nitrogen, but reduction of active treatment demand by promoting natural attenuation is considered best industry practice. In this paper, the results of laboratory-scale and full-scale trials of a semi-passive approach (i.e., enhanced algae growth) to remove ammonia nitrogen at the Meliadine mine are presented. Phosphorus was found to be the limiting factor to algae growth at the mine site. The addition of various concentrations of phosphorus was first tested at a laboratory scale. The samples were exposed to in-situ conditions, and ammonia nitrogen removal rates ranging from 40% to 93% were achieved over a period of 24 days. This paper also presents the methodology and results of an in-pond treatment during which a 50% ammonia nitrogen removal rate was observed after 68 days. The studied mine site uses breakpoint chlorination as its primary treatment approach for ammonia nitrogen removal. The results presented in this paper show the potential of using enhanced algae growth as a pre-treatment method, subsequently reducing the quantity of chemicals required for operating the breakpoint chlorination plant. This potential requires further investigation and additional trials are currently under evaluation.
