The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

The past year (1950) has been a big one for the oil industry in Canada, with new records being set in almost every phase of exploration and development activity. New highs were reached in acreage holdings, in geophysical activity, in wildcat drilling, and in field development and production. The only item that did not show a substantial increase over recent years was the amount of reserves added by new discoveries. This was not due to a decrease in the number of new discoveries, however, hut rather to the fact that most of the discoveries were made during the later months in the year and could not be fully evaluated by the year end. The foregoing remarks pertain mainly to activity in Western Canada. In Eastern Canada, operations continued on a modest scale. with exploration drilling down slightly from the previous year but with development drilling and production at about the same level. Returning to Western Canada, it is observed that the general exploration play was one of expansion and intensification. The issuing of new petroleum and natural gas regulations by the province of British Columbia precipitated a moderate entry of companies into the northeastern part of the Province.

An arsenical ore containing both pyrite and arsenopyrite was heated to a temperature at which decomposition and distillation took place. The condensate consisted of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide, although the analysis of the ore showed that volatile arsenic and sulphur were present in proportion to produce a condensate of arsenic trisulphide and sulphur. Distillation tests on the mineral arsenopyrite also produced a condensate of metallic arsenic and arsenic disulphide. This arsenic sulphide gave a distinct x-ray diffraction pattern which was not listed in the A.S.T.M. data file. This same sulphide can be produced by heating a mixture of arsenic and sulphur in vacuo. Its chemical analysis corresponds to As2S2. The dissociation pressures of arsenopyrite and the vapour pressures of arsenic disulphide and arsenic metal were measured, using a quartz "spoon" gauge. "The process of blending consistent and predictable feed for the roasters is critical for optimizing product quality and controlling production costs. To assist in this process, online PGNAA slurry analyzers have been installed and evaluated at a Sudbury Ontario smelter. They are used to measure 100 % of the full process stream to obtain elemental composition data in real time. This paper explains the application details at Sudbury and the benefits achieved from their full stream, elemental slurry analyzers.INTRODUCTIONSudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (Sudbury INO), a Glencore Company, consists of two underground nickel/copper mines in Sudbury, Nickel Rim South and, Fraser, along with the Strathcona mill and the Sudbury smelter. The facilities are spread throughout the 60 kilometer-long, oval-shaped geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin (Figure 1). The company has been mining nickel-copper ores in the Sudbury area since 1929. Nickel and copper are the primary focus of operations at Nickel Rim South and Fraser. Other base metals such as cobalt and precious metals are also produced.The Strathcona Mill receives ore from Nickel Rim South, Fraser, and third-party miners to produce two concentrate streams. One is a nickel-copper concentrate for use by the Sudbury Smelter; the other is a copper concentrate which goes to other Glencore operations for smelting and refining. The Sudbury Smelter converts the mineral concentrate into a high grade matte containing nickel, copper, cobalt and platinum group metals. This matte product is shipped to Glencore's Nikkelverk refinery in Norway for further processing. In 2015, the Sudbury INO Smelter completed the first phase of the Process Gas Project (PGP); a series of process changes and capital investments designed to reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions in accordance with Ontario Regulation 194. A critical element of the planned emissions reduction was the elimination of a higher percentage of sulphur contained in input concentrate streams, which can then be captured and converted to sulphuric acid."

The investigations set forth in the following pages were made in the field in Newfoundland during the summer of 1927, and later in the laboratories and library of McGill University, and in the library of the Canadian Geological Survey at Ottawa, with the purpose of collating and adding to our knowledge of the geology of an area roughly wedge-shaped in outline, and nearly nine thousand square miles in extent, stretching across the centre of the island of Newfoundland, from the southwest to the northeast coasts. To the description of this district, which contains most of the known mineral occurrences of Newfoundland, the term mineral belt is here introduced.

"7.1. INTRODUCTIONThis chapter addresses the joint venture and examines a number of general concepts of the joint venture relationship. Chapter 8 looks at some specific concepts related to the provisions of a joint venture agreement, which are equally applicable to a shareholders’ agreement or other contractual relationship. The term “joint venture” is used because the author is a common law solicitor (a matter of convenience for which apologies are offered to civil law readers), but it should be noted that, in many aspects, the legal structure of an entity is irrelevant. It is the relationship of the parties, be they venturers or shareholders, that is important, and the areas of concern are surprisingly similar (except for terminology).The details of the joint venture relationship and agreement could fill several books. Accordingly, this chapter and the next focus on selected topics that appear to have caused problems or confusion or to be the basis for disputes. And remember that, although the following discussion is in the context of a joint venture, many of the comments apply, either directly or indirectly, to virtually any common undertaking and the agreement defining it.For interest’s sake, this chapter starts with a summary of some of the earlier types of agreements and arrangements that have evolved into the joint venture agreement of today in Canada, the philosophy of their format, and the reasons for their demise.7.2. Entrepreneurs saw the opportunity to make money by assembling large parcels of land and working them as a single operation. In order to do this, some owners who were not ready to sell out had to be convinced to do so through more attractive offers"

THE plains of southern Alberta constitute one of the classic areas of geological investigation in Canada, for it was here in 1874, and in 1881 to 1883, that George Mercer Dawson (1, 2, 3) made the pioneer observations that are basic to all subsequent work on the interior plains of Canada. Dawson's work was extended eastward by R. G. McConnell ( 4) and northward by J. B. Tyrrell( 5) , but it remained. for D. B. Dowling to re-examine Dawson's Bow and Belly River Area and to make certain necessary revisions in the stratigraphical system of his predecessor. In 1917, Dowling published his memoir, The Southern Plains of Alberta( 6) , which remained for over ten years the last word on the stratigraphy and structure of the area described. It is generally conceded that Dowling's work made known the existence of a great artesian basin beneath the semi-arid plains of southeastern Alberta. In addition, his structural studies greatly stimulated the search for natural gas and petroleum. The most recent general publications on this area by the Geological Survey are based on the field work of M. Y. Williams, E. J. Whittaker, W. S. Dyer, and P. S. Warren, between the years 1923 and 1926. Their results were embodied in the Calgary Sheet (7) and the memoir, Geology of Southern Alberta and Southwestern Saskatchewan (8). By this time, the number of geologists working in Alberta in the development of the petroleum and natural gas industries had become large, and in 1931 the Alberta Association of Petroleum Geologist~ offered the Donaldson Bogart Dowling Memorial Symposium on Stratigraphy of Southern Alberta( 9) , a most valuable series of papers descriptive both of the ,surface stratigraphy and that observed in the well records.

"Edward Haycock, Engineer and Public Contractor Edward Haycock was born in Shrewsbury, England, June 14, 1813. His father was John Haycock, a timber merchant and soap manufacturer, residing at Swan Hill Court, Shrewsbury, and his mother Esther was the daughter of William Hilton of Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Edward's paternal grandfather, John Hiram Haycock, was the first of a line of architects that ""changed the face of Shrewsbury"" and ""provided some of the best examples of typical Victorian architecture in Shropshire""(1). Nothing is known of Edward's early life or education, although it appears that he made no attempt to follow this artistic trend. In 1833, Edward immigrated to Canada. The following year, he married Mary Butler, daughter of Johnson Butler, a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. Mrs. Haycock, as co-heiress of Johnson Butler's estate, was assigned 600 choice acres of farmland in Brooke Township near present-day Sarnia. This alone would have guaranteed a tidy income, but the Haycocks soon disposed of this land, the last lots being sold in May 1840. Instead, Haycock turned his hand to engineering and, for a number of years, was employed by the Great Western Railway first in Woodstock and later in Hamilton. He then moved to Port Hope, tried farming, worked in the engineering office of the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway Company, and later constructed a portion of this railway(2). During his stay in Port Hope, Haycock met his future partners Ralph Jones, a contractor, and Thomas Curtis Clarke, chief engineer with the P.H.L. and B. Railway Company. The alliance was styled Jones, Haycock and Company and their most successful venture was the construction of the Government Buildings in Ottawa. This work was the crowning achievement of Haycock's career and, no doubt, his proudest moment was at 11:30 a.m., April 2, 1860, when his daughter Mary Emily, then a little girl of 4, with a special silver trowel ceremoniously laid the first stone. Of special interest in this project were the quarrying operations, which introduced Haycock to the art and difficulties of mining as well as to the potential returns of mines. Sandstone, for facing, was drawn from four quarries, 10 to 12 miles from the Departmental Buildings. Haycock seems to have been in charge of these operations, which in the early stages involved an average labour force of 86 men and 43 teams. However, by 1861, quarrying had declined in importance and the contractors were able to concentrate whole-heartedly on the construction site."

As a result of a test-drilling program conducted by the Research Council of Alberta in 1968, a gypsum deposit averaging 30 feet in thickness, with a chemical purity of 84 per cent gypsum, has been proven to underlie the Clearwater River valley for a distance of 18 miles at depths ranging from near-surface to 300 feet. This and other subsurface deposits in the vicinity of Fort McMurray, Alberta are the product of local hydration of anhydrite beds believed to be the water-insoluble remains of the leached Prairie Evaporite formation of Middle Devonian age, the thick salt section of which is preserved down dip. The effects of salt solution are seen in the disturbed bedding and the intermixture of greyish green shale with gypsum in the core, the shale content being responsible for the rather low chemical purity of the deposit. A similar gypsum deposit, but probably of higher purity, is postulated to occur beneath the Athabasca River valley about 60 miles north of Fort McMurray.

ABSTRACT Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances resulting from ore changes and equipment malfunctions, such as hydrocyclone overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes, surging, and internal liner detachment that may cause a loss of classification performance. Metal recovery losses in downstream leaching or flotation circuits justify the development of methods for rapid detection of hydrocyclone malfunction. Two methods are presented in this paper. The first method uses measurements from sensors available in a grinding circuit and the second uses vibration sensors installed on the individual hydrocyclones of a nest.

Duckbill mining is probably the simplest method of loading coal mechanically at the face in underground mines. It is a means of reducing the amount of physical labour required to produce a ton of coal. In effect, it is merely shaker conveyor mining brought up to date with the addition of a self-loading head or 'duckbill' on the end of the conveyor line. Any mechanical device used to load coal is a means of supplanting the human muscles as the medium for getting the coal off the floor into the transportation equipment. There can be no argument with the conclusion that a man can lift so much and no more. He can load more tons of coal on a low conveyor, because the lift is less, than he can in a pit car two, three, or even four feet high. Thus it follows that, if the lifting operation is entirely eliminated, the man should be able to produce even more coal. A mechanical operation is essentially a multiplication of physical strength. Although there are various ways in which coal can be loaded at the face by mechanical means, there is, perhaps, none more adaptable than shakers equipped with duckbills. This is particularly true for thin seams and in mines having heavy, tender top conditions which require close timbering. However, as we are discussing duckbill mining, we will make no further reference to any other type of equipment. The first, and to date the only, mine in eastern Canada to adopt a system of mechanical loading at the face is the Franklin mine of the Bras d'Or Coal Company, Ltd., at Bras d'Or, N.S. An experimental Goodman shaker conveyor with a self-loading head, or duckbill, was installed in this mine in 1940. Since that time other units have been placed in operation so that, today, this mine is completely mechanized. The method of operation 1s room-and-pillar. The operation is carried on in a 42-in. seam, which lies 420 feet beneath the Sydney Main or Harbour seam in the Sydney Mines basin. The slopes bear N.25 30'E., dip 10 per cent seaward, and are about 6,000 feet in length. The physical conditions of this seam do not make it particularly adaptable for complete mechanization as it contains a large amount of foreign material, such as clay intrusions or wash-outs and iron pyrites. These clay intrusions, known locally as 'troubles', vary in thickness from a few inches to as thick as eighteen feet and usually replace the coal to the full height of the seam.

According to the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), 140 Billion CAD is required to maintain, rehabilitate, and replace subway infrastructure between 2010 and 2014. The current practice adopted by transit authorities for prioritizing subway stations for rehabilitation is based on the station structural needs. While this classification is reflective of station condition, other factors, such as station size, location and passenger capacity, play an important role. The criticality of a station is an index that represents the functional importance of a station depending upon a set of identified factors. The system criticality is based on several attributes, such as station location, size, and nature of use. This paper presents a novel method of clustering subway stations for rehabilitation priority based on their criticality level. The different stations in a subway network are rated according to their relative importance against predefined attributes. The weights and scores of the attributes are computed with the help of experts and current subway network data. The analysis is done using the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP) to accommodate the subjectivity of human judgment as being expressed in natural language which entails ?fuzziness? in real-life problems and account for the interdependency between the selected attributes. The output of the model is a criticality based clustering of subway stations. The proposed framework helps authorities prioritize stations for rehabilitation and highlight stations with more criticality for a more robust asset analysis.

"A computational method based on a continuum-mechanical approach to simulate rock cutting is developed and evaluated. The aim is to obtain the local loading acting at the cutting pick during operation. The explicit FEM is chosen to model the pick-rock interaction. The presented method takes advantage of (i) an advanced material model (ii) a robust contact algorithm and (iii) fast calculations due to parallelization. A damage-plasticity law is chosen and modified with user-subroutines. A user integrated element deletion routine evades critical mesh distortions. Infinite elements at the model boundaries avoid unrealistic deformation wave reflection.INTRODUCTIONExcavation in mining and tunneling is a costly and complex process. Special equipment such as the roadheader (Figure 1) is employed to cut the rock in the excavation process but high material strengths limit their usability (Tockner 1999). Nowadays a challenge is to extend their field of application to harder and more abrasive rock materials. The forces on the pick (Figure 2) are of great importance and determine wear and especially the efficiency of the machine. Figure 2 shows the principle of cutting and the predominant forces. The variation of pick geometry, cutting depth or attack angle will result in an alteration of these forces and determine the efficiency of the process (Tockner 1999). The mechanisms of rock cutting follow the principle of indentation (Kou et al. 1999). Directly under the indenter a hydrostatic stress state evolves causing the material to fail only due to crushing and fragmentation mechanisms. In the close surroundings large strains emerge and tensile cracks are formed but in a further distance the material behaves elastically."

THE USE of higher grade charges in blast furnaces in the form of sintered or pelletized concentrates has been increasing rapidly. The question of beneficiation of iron ores for this purpose is therefore receiving much attention as more deposits are developed. Many iron ores may respond well to magnetic roasting procedures followed by magnetic concentration, however, in most cases other more standard ore dressing methods are competitive and cheaper. For magnetic roasting as applied to iron ore beneficiation, the present question is "Can it be economically justified in situations where it appears to produce good results?" "95% bulk mixing times in three different size water model ladles of a 140 T cylindrical shaped , dual plug ( located diametrically opposite at mid bath radius position) stirred, industrial ladle were determined experimentally with and without an upper buoyant phase. Based on dimensional analysis and a regression of the experimental data and, it was shown that in the inertial and gravitational force dominated flow regimes, 95% bulk mixing times for a slag-less situation can be described via:[equation]Parallel to this, a large number of experiments were also carried out in one of the water models (D=0.30m) to quantify the influence of an upper buoyant phase on mixing. These indicated that mixing time, operating variables and thermo-physical properties of the upper phase liquid can be correlated via a dimensionless relationship of the type:[equation]in which, Q is the ambient gas flow rate, L is the depth of liquid , (AL) is the slag layer thickness and 6 and t are respectively the surface tension and viscosity of the upper phase fluid The dimensional analysis, regression of experimental data as well as the adequacy of the proposed correlations are discussed in the text."

The Outotec nickel matte chloride leaching process is especially suitable for small capacity standalone nickel refineries. The matte is leached with hydrochloric acid and oxygen in multiple steps in atmospheric OKTOP® reactors. Oxygen feed prevents reductive conditions and hydrogen formation in the leaching process. A sufficiently high acid concentration keeps the iron dissolved in the solution. The iron is removed after leaching by precipitation and the pregnant leach solution continues to metals recovery. The metals recovery from the chloride solution is done by solvent extractions, where ammonia is used for pH control. Copper and nickel are stripped from the organic phases into sulphate solutions. Metals can be recovered from the purified solution by conventional electrowinning. Other alternatives are precipitation or hydrogen reduction processes. The ammonium chloride in the solvent extraction raffinate is regenerated into ammonia. The calcium chloride solution from ammonia regeneration is routed to acid regeneration where sulphuric acid is added and ultra-pure gypsum is precipitated. The hydrochloric acid solution from this step is recycled back to leaching. The process yields good overall metal recoveries and expensive

The disturbed natural rock mass tends to equilibrium state accompanying with non-equilibrium evolution process which has significant influence on the long-term stability of engineering structure. The deformation development in the non-equilibrium evolution is determined by two intrinsic processes, trend to equilibrium and damage development, which can be illustrated by evolution of excavated tunnel. Thus the creep and damage must be taken into account in study of non-equilibrium evolution process. Within Rice’s irreversible thermodynamics with internal state variable (ISV), the conjugate force function which equals to zero is a convex surface which divide the stress space into two parts, called equilibrium and nonequilibrium stress space respectively. The concept of effective stress of non-equilibrium has been proposed, in which the stress difference (d - d ) are the effective driving forces of non-equilibrium evolution process with hardening and damage effective. The formulations of inelastic strain rate and energy dissipation rate have been recast in the form of effective stresses. The inelastic complementary energy (ICE) is proposed to measure intensity of non-equilibrium evolution of material system. The specific equations of conjugated forces and kinetic equations of internal state variables are presented. The ICE and rate of energy dissipation are all calculated to be used to evaluate long-term stability of geo-engineering. The results show that rate of energy dissipation may be more convenience and flexible than ICE for internal state variable constitutive equation of rock mass.

This paper presents the results of comparative analysis of effective income-based tax rates for mining in the Northwest Territories (NWT), selected Canadian provinces and international jurisdictions. The study was done as background to a review of royalty regulations for the NWT. ObjectiveThis paper presents results of comparative analysis of effective mining royalty1 rates, and combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates on selected mine models for the Northwest Territories (NWT), with those for several other jurisdictions in Canada and abroad which compete with the NWT for mining investment.BackgroundThe February 27, 1995 federal budget directed the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND) to proceed with a comprehensive review and amendments to northern natural resource management legislation in order “to increase revenues and ensure a fair return to the Crown.” DIAND is responsible for the administration of the Territorial Lands Act, and its regulations.The Territorial Lands Act gives the Governor-in-Council the authority to “… make regulations for the leasing of mining rights in, under or on territorial lands and the payment of royalties therefor,…”. In the NWT, the Canada Mining Regulations (CMR) provide for the disposition of mineral rights for most minerals, other than coal, petroleum and related hydrocarbons, in return for the payment of a royalty to the Crown.As part of this review of the NWT mining royalty regime, several computer mine models were developed and tax regimes in a number of jurisdictions were analyzed. Effective mining royalty rates, and the combined effective mining royalty and income tax rates were compared across the jurisdictions. The results presented in this paper are a part of the background work done in preparing a discussion paper on proposed changes to the NWT mining royalty that is expected to be released for public consultation in the very near future."

En outre, un modèle de simulation est en cours de création afin d?évaluer les gains incrémentaux liés à l?application d?une série d?innovations dans une exploitation minière. La présentation fera le point sur l'état d'avancement du projet en plus de soumettre quelques exemples.
