Manganese nodules form at the sediment surface of abyssal plains throughout the global ocean at water depths of about 4000-6500 m. The nodules form a continuum from purely hydrogenetic (all metals from seawater) to purely diagenetic (all metals from sediment pore waters), which will determine which metals of potential economic interest are enriched in the nodules. Another important factor in metal enrichment is whether diagenesis in the bottom sediment is oxic or suboxic. There are several nodule fields in the deep ocean that have received much attention with regards to economic potential, the most important being the Clarion-Clipperton zone (CCZ) in the NE Pacific, where the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has signed 12 contracts for exploration areas, each spanning 75,000 square kilometers. Those nodules are rich in nickel (mean 1.3 wt. %), copper (mean 1.1 %), and manganese (28%), with moderate amounts of cobalt (mean 0.2%), molybdenum (587 g/t), and lithium (129 g/t). A conservative estimate is that there exists 21,100 million dry tonnes of nodules in the CCZ, yielding more manganese, twice the nickel, three times the cobalt, and four times the yttrium than the entire land-based reserve base (economic plus marginally economic plus subeconomic reserves) for each metal. Total rare-earth elements (REEs) as oxides average 0.09% in CCZ nodules, a potential byproduct even at that grade because the heavy REE complement averages 26%, compared to less than 1% for the large land-based carbonatite REE deposits. The price for HREEs is much greater than for the light REEs. For comparison, the REEs in deep-ocean ferromanganese crusts are 3 to 5 times greater than nodules and the HREE complement averages 18%. Of the 12 CCZ contracts, 7 are with States (China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, and a group of States (IOM); and 5 are with companies: G-Tec Sea Mineral Resources NV, Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI); Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd (TOML), UK Seabed Resources Ltd (Lockheed UK), and Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd. Three other nodule fields that have received attention are in the Peru Basin, which has nodules very rich in manganese (34%) and lithium (mean 311 g/t), the Penrhyn Basin (Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone), with nodules very rich in cobalt (mean 0.4%); and the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB), where India has an exploration contract with the ISA. CIPB nodules have mean nickel, copper, and manganese contents of 1.1%, 1.0%, and 24% respectively.

"Bedding-parallel thrust-hosted gold veins are developed in the Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal, South Africa. The reefs display a complex history characterized by temporally and spatially overlapping events of similar mineralization and deformation. Recognition of the episodic reactivation of these low angle (5° to 10°) thrust faults implicates high fluid pressures (equalling or exceeding lithostatic pressures). Geochemical constraints limit the amount of fluid-rock interaction and the occurrence of transgressive mineralization within the Archaean granitoid basement suggests that the high pressure fluids originated at depth beneath the Transvaal Basin.Similarities exist between gold deposits of Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest and Telfer, Western Australia as well as Passagem de Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil. All deposits are sub-parallel to the enclosing bedding which is shallowly inclined. Furthermore, they are also hosted by contractional deformational structures and are clearly epigenetic in origin."

In the present paper a new and highly economic route for Fe-separation from HCl leaching processes in hydrometallurgical applications is described. In most ore leaching processes, Fe is involved and needs to be separated; HCl has become an interesting leaching agent, because it can be recycled. Usually a mix of Fe2+ and Fe3+ is obtained which can be hydrolyzed directly (in case only Fe3+) or roasted via pyrohydrolysis (in case of Fe2+) to ferric oxide. Economic oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ is described, and potential technologies for regeneration of HCl with separation of Fe are shown and compared.

"MOST of the mines in the Province of Ontario in Canada are multi-level operations in steeply dipping veins; yet there is an appreciable number whose de-posits are relatively flat-lying, ranging up to 45° inclination.The veins vary in width up to several hundred feet and may or may not be branching systems. The depths of mines range from a few hundred to 8,000 feet, approximately. The primary products of the underground group are asbestos, gold, silver, cobalt, copper, nickel, iron, uranium, talc, fluorspar, gyp-sum and salt.There are a few open-pit mines. The majority are temporary in type because, as the outcrops are removed, mining is continued be-low surface. Primary products of the open pits are copper, nickel, iron, magnesium and nepheline syenite.The industry as a whole employs about 50,000 persons, approximately 60 per •cent of whom have dust-exposure occupations. The definition of a dust-exposure occupation and the requirements for •dealing with same are set forth in The Mining Act of Ontario.Results of extensive and continuing studies on the incidence and progression of silicosis have been reported periodically for years past, in annual reports of the Mines Accident Prevention Association of Ontario and in papers presented at Conferences sponsored by Mcintyre Research Foundation of Toronto, all of which have been published. The information provided therein proves the effectiveness of the means being used to prevent silicosis and allied disorders."

"GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

The Agassiz Metallotect and the Johnson Shear Zone represent two metallogenetic fea tures located within the northern and outhern belts, respectively. of the Aphebian-aged Lynn Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba . Numerous gold occu rrences are associated with these two regional features . The tratabound Agas iz Au-Ag deposit with 2.9 million tonnes of 5.2 g/tonne Au and 11.8 g/tonne Ag. occurs within the Agassiz Metallotect. The stratigraphic sequence characterizing the Agassiz Metallotect comprises interlayered ox ide. silicate and sulphide facies iron formations, biotite-rich and siliceous siltstones. and a high Mg- i-Cr basaltic rock that ha previou ly been identified as tholei itic picrite. These rocks can be traced in outcrop and by their INPUT and gradiometric signature for 65 km. The Johnson Shear Zone is an ill-defined 35 km long zone of strucwral disruption that crosscuts volcanic. sedimentary and intrusive rocks and contains numerous vein-type gold occurrences. Both of these metallotects are characterized by their low level of exploration activity and as a result offer excellent residual exploration potential. Rock, basal till and vegetation geochemical techniques applied in the vicinity of the Agassiz deposit indicate the presence of trace element dispersion halos associated with the mineralization. The halos define an exploration target larger than the mineralized zone. Gold occurrences within the two metallotects are described with emphasis on the Agassiz Au-Ag deposit . A wide range of gold occurrence-types is documented including syngencticstratabound , epigenetic-replacement and epigenetic-quartz vein .

"The use of calcine for selective zinc precipitation requires specialist knowledge to achieve satisfactory flowsheet design. Calcine from the bed of a fluid roaster is preferred, and factors such as the size distribution of ground calcine, the stoichiometric ratio of the calcine precipitant to the initial dissolved zinc concentration and the moisture content of the resultant filter cake are parameters which require critical attention. Extensive testing in a fully-integrated electrolytic zinc plant pilot plant has demonstrated that properly designed selective zinc precipitation plants using calcine as the precipitant are reliable operating units.The advantages of using calcine instead of limestone for selective zinc precipitation include a decreased cost of reagents, as well as avoiding the formation of by-product gypsum.Process simulation modelling has demonstrated that the use of calcine in this context has widespread application in the design of zinc plants with superior impurity and water balance control characteristics. A particularly powerful approach involves closed circuit washing. In this mode, filtrate from the selective zinc precipitation step is used to wash a zinc plant residue such as jarosite, and the resulting filtrate is returned to the selective zinc precipitation section. IntroductionThe Selective Zinc Precipitation (SZP) Process, developed and patented by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) may be used to achieve simultaneously, water balance and impurity control in an electrolytic zinc plantO,2). Impurities which may be controlled by the SZP process include chlorine, magnesium, manganese, potassium and sodium.In the SZP process, basic zinc sulphate is precipitated from a zinc sulphate solution by either limestone, lime or a compound containing zinc oxide, usually calcined zinc sulphide concentrate (calcine) or alternatively zinc oxide fume .The solids containing basic zinc sulphate are separated, typically, by filtration and returned to the zinc plant circuit as a neutralizing agent. The zinc depleted solution can either be discarded, or used to wash residues, thereby achieving water balance and impurity control (Fig. I)."

Being a mining company, Assarel-Medet has a significant impact upon the environmental components. In order to meet the legal requirements and the requirements stipulated by the effective permits as well as to reduce the environmental imprint throughout the years, the policy of the company to implement a number of projects to improve the environmental components quality and the environmental state in the company?s region. The projects associated with atmospheric air quality management and reduction of the impact exercised by Assarel-Medet JSC by implementing various measures to eliminate the potential sources of the impact, preventive and rehabilitation initiatives as well as organizational and administrative activities are among the most important ones. A stable improvement of atmospheric air quality in the region and minimization of the company impact upon the ground air state in the region was observed in the period from 2005 to 2012 due to the applied measures. This project is a contribution to the environmental protection, in particular to atmospheric air protection, by applying integral monitoring and modeling methods to identify the negative impact by the mining companies and plan measures to reduce and restrict it as well as to improve the quality of the environment and living area of people working and living in the impact range as an element of sustainable development.

Great advances have been made in rubber-lined pumps for the pumping of mill pulps. The Canadian Allis Chalmers alone report ov.er 300 such pumps put into service during the past four years. Pumps in which both the casing and the impeller are rubber covered have proved most economical in handling the usual run of mill pulps, effecting large savings in power, maintenance, and shutdown costs. For the handling of pulps containing comparatively large, sharper edged /articles, rubber-lined casings with hard iron impellers have been developed by the pumping departments of Hollinger and Noranda. These rubber-iron combination pumps show an appreciable reduction in overall pumping costs as compared with the all-rubber and the all-iron pumps. The power efficiency is lower in rubber-iron than in all-rubber pumps but higher than in the all-iron pumps, with lower replacement costs due to the cheap iron impellers used. Where continuous operation is essential, however, and duplication of units to take care of shutdown time for replacement of parts is not within the expenditure budget of the company, all-rubber pumps are being used t0 a greater extent. As in all items pertaining to milling operations, the economics of the situation must be studied as closely as the technical details, to arrive at the most advisable practice.

"AT ANY TIME, it is a pleasure to me to be invited to address The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy because it represents an industry and men with whom I have been happily, if peripherally, associated continuously for forty years. This year, it is a particular pleasure because I believe that an important subject has arisen which I propose to discuss.This is a major discovery in the earth sciences, first fully revealed this winter, but already widely accepted. The basis of this revolution, for it is no less, is that measurements of three different features of the earth all change in exactly the same ratios. These ratios are the same in all parts of the world. The results from one set are thus being used to make precise numerical predictions about all the sets in all parts of the world. No such accurate correlations and predictions have ever been found before in geology or areal geophysics. The whole subject of earth science has thereby been radically altered.The first of these measurements is that of the direction of magnetic polarity in lava flows. When piles of young lavas are examined with the aid of a pocket compass, it is noted that some flows are magnetized in the direction of the earth's field and some in the reverse direction (Figure 1). By accurately dating enough flows, a time scale of the dates of reversals has been established. During the past four million years, nine reversals have occurred synchronously all over the world (Cox, Darymple and Doell, 1967, McDougall and Chamalaun, 1966) (Figure 2). It appears that the scale can be extended back to Precambrian times (McMahon and Strangway, 1967). This time scale is the first of the 'three identical ratios."

The high pressure acid leaching of laterite was modelled and simulated using a combination of two commercially available software packages, namely Aspen Plus 11.1 and the OLI Stream Analyzer. New kinetic parameters for the acid-controlled metal dissolution and precipitation reactions at temperature were first determined from previous experimental data on the leaching of limonite. A grain model with cylindrical pellets was used to model the solid-liquid dissolution reactions. Precipitation reactions were modeled via aqueous equilibrium chemistry. A dedicated thermodynamic database previously developed at the University of Toronto was used in conjunction with the OLI software to model the solution chemistry and calculate the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution at the leaching temperature. Mass balances were handled by Aspen Plus. The simulation gave good predictions of nickel dissolution under industrial and laboratory conditions, for the dissolution of limonite and limonite/saprolite blends. Computational

This paper compares an integrated evaluation approach to decision-making with more traditional sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The primary objective is to highlight the differences in NPV that can arise from using these evaluation methods in a top down and bottom-up approach. Results from three resource scenarios, derived from sampling a "virtual" ore body (reality) on grid spacings of 75m, 50m and 25m, are analyzed and compared.

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. "Johnson Matthey has developed the first diesel particulate filter (DPF) for underground mining that controls particulate matter (PM) at the same time as maintaining emissions of NO2 at or below engine baseline levels. DPF technology is critical for controlling PM which is classified as a carcinogen, but passively regenerating systems rely on the use of oxidation catalysts that can potentially increase NO2 emissions. This paper reviews the development of low-NO2 PM control technology and the results from testing this technology underground on diesel mining equipment. KEYWORDS Decomposition catalyst, Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Diesel particulate matter, Mining Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®), NO2, SCR INTRODUCTION The introduction of diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology on heavy duty diesel (HDD) engines has been an important step towards addressing the clean air and health concerns for mining companies. Control of diesel particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel engines is already being implemented for on- and off-road vehicles, and similar legislation is being prepared for mining equipment. In addition to PM, the diesel emission control strategies (DECS) also reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). Some DECS control oxides of nitrogen, or NOx, which is composed of NO and NO2. Johnson Matthey has led the development of emission control technologies for diesel engines for almost 30 years. Over the last ten years alone JM has supplied over 3 million Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) DPF systems for on-road vehicles, and over 200,000 systems for off-road vehicles. The patented CRT technology combines a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with a DPF to effectively trap harmful PM from diesel exhaust, while removing CO and HC. The DOC converts part of the engine NOx to NO2, which reacts with the trapped soot to regenerate the filter. As engines become more fuel efficient, less waste heat enters the exhaust. This can be a disadvantage for after-treatment systems as it leads to lower catalyst operating temperatures. The CRT system regenerates passively, without addition of heat, at temperatures that are typical of diesel engine exhaust. JM recently launched the Mining CRT system which integrates CRT technology with NO2 abatement to reduce PM and tailpipe NO2 from underground diesel mining equipment. This is the first technology proven to control both PM and NO2 emissions for a cleaner, healthier working environment. The Mining CRT is also cost-effective compared to other technologies."

Several reviews of mineral project performance in the past 35 years indicate a pattern of occasional, but recurrent, mining project failures due to shortcomings in geological information and estimation, mineral processing and metallurgical testing, feasibility study objectives and requirements, and project start-up methods. A commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement methods and to obtaining “ENOUGH DATA, OF APPROPRIATE QUALITY” is essential. Recent international and Canadian proposals for mineral resource and ore reserve definitions have taken a nonprescriptive stance that will undermine the formulation of requirements, guidelines and industry standards for efficient deposit delineation and estimation, and for the determination of project feasibility. To help reduce problems, every feasibility study supporting a mine development and production decision should be based on objectives and methods adequate to reach completion targets similar to the bankers’, as a good business target for a profitable project. In a resource/reserve system, the use of reserve should be restricted to a project that meets required technical, economic and legal feasibility requirements for successful project implementation, and the definitions of these categories should provide explicit limits. Current shortcomings will limit the ability of the Qualified Person to provide “adequate professional practice,” fulfill his/her professional responsibilities to his employer or client and provide adequate information to the investing public. We must take advantage of present opportunities for Setting New Standards for the new Millennium.

Introduction The invitation to contribute a discussion on some of the broader features of the mineral deposits of our Cordillera seemed acceptable enough when presented several months ago. More mature consideration has impressed upon me the difficulty of making any constructive or very helpful contribution in the short time available and with my limited inspiration. Dr. Lang deserves our real gratitude for his general paper of nineteen pages at the beginning of the Volume. Into it, with the help of two diagrams and seven tabular summaries, he has packed a lot of useful information and has analyzed along several lines the data of the Volume's twenty-eight detailed papers on our mines and camps. He has added additional facts from his own knowledge of the region. I am sure that, like myself and the whole fraternity, he feels especially grateful to the eleven company geologists who found time to contribute detailed descriptions of mines they have studied. The Regional Situation With the Jubilee Volume and two recent publications of great value from the Geological Survey, we are more up-to-date on Cordilleran geology than we have ever been. But I would like to emphasize that we still have but fragmentary information. Brief study of G.S.C. Map 932A will illustrate this. Our knowledge of the Rocky mountains is limited to two narrow sections along the main railway lines, a somewhat larger area from the border north along the Mesozoic coal-bearing basins, and some reconnaissance along Peace river and the Alaska highway. There is some additional information on old maps, particularly those by G. M. Dawson, but it is very much of the 'exploratory' type. The other mapped areas are chiefly in the accessible region south of 'fifty-one', in the central part adjacent to and spreading north, recently, from the Canadian National railway, and along the edges of the Coast Range.

This study focused on determining the stability of thin shotcrete fill fences at a hard rock mine in northwestern Ontario during increased pour rates of paste backfill. Determination of the stability of the fence is needed for both personnel safety and to avoid failure of a fence. Failure of a fill fence during backfill activities would have severe impacts on production and potential hazards to nearby workers. Approved fill fences at the mine are a slender design of 10.5 centimeters of shotcrete applied to a rebar framework with burlap lined ?bedspring? backing. Approved mine standards dictate that fill rates may not exceed 1.5 meters of paste depth per 10-hour shift when pouring behind a flat fill fence. To decrease the backfill cycle time the study looked at fence stability during increased pour rates of 2.5 meters paste depth poured within a 10-hour shift. An instrumentation design was developed including pressure cells, strain gauges, and tilt-meters that were built into experimental fences to observe the effects of increased pour rates on lateral wall pressures, strain development in the rebar and shotcrete reinforcement, and physical deformation patterns along the face of the fence. The data was analyzed for overall stability.

"The degree of uncertainty associated with a natural diamond resource is important to quantify from the time of discovery through the production lifetime. Data collection occurs during the discovery, exploration, delineation, and production or recovery phases. Quantifying the relationship between data and uncertainty is an important component of project valuation. The value of data is measured as their potential to reduce uncertainty if they are collected. A method is developed using Monte Carlo simulation for predicting resource uncertainty and valuing data during critical phases of development, particularly discovery and exploration. The technique is applied to diamond pipe deposits.RÉSUMÉ Il est important de quantifier le degré d’incertitude associé à une ressource diamantifère naturelle, depuis le moment de sa découverte et durant toute la durée de l’exploitation. La collecte de données se fait durant les phases de découverte, d’exploration, de délimitation, et de production ou de récupération. La quantification de la relation entre les données et l’incertitude est une composante importante de l’évaluation du projet. La valeur des données est mesurée en tant que leur potentiel à réduire l’incertitude si elles sont recueillies. Une méthode a été développée qui utilise la simulation de Monte Carlo pour prédire l’incertitude de la ressource et évaluer les données durant les phases critiques du développement, surtout celles de la découverte et de l’exploration.
