Aircraft utilization, weather and cost data are given for three separate projects north of the sixtieth parallel in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These operations, carried out by helicopter-equipped geological and prospecting parties, have cost $24 to $30 per square mile, depending principally on the distance from the base. They provide adequate surface exploration of areas with 40 to 50 per cent rock outcrop. A good one-inch-to-one-mile geological map can be made. T HE exploration of the Canadian northland has been given increasing attention by the mining industry during recent years. In many cases, the initial problem is to make an adequate reconnaissance of a large area where existing geological information is meagre. The Geological Survey of Canada pioneered the use of helicopter-equipped geological parties for mapping at a scale of eight miles to the inch.

Sulfate-reducing passive bioreactors efficiently treat acid mine drainage (AMD) by increasing its pH and alkalinity and by removing metals as sulfide precipitates, in addition to hydroxides and carbonates. However, the new mining legislation sets discharge limits based on physicochemical parameters and on the non-toxicity of treated effluent as well. In this study, toxicity was assessed for effluent from 3.5 L column bioreactors filled with mixtures of natural organic carbon sources and operated at two different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 7.3 d and 10 d for the treatment of a highly contaminated AMD. Acute toxicity was observed for D. magna, and a toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) procedure was performed to identify potential toxicants. To help the interpretation of the toxicity results, metal partition in the effluent was also determined by filtration and ultrafiltration, while geochemical modeling was performed for metal speciation evaluation. The 10 d HRT effluent was nonacutely lethal for rainbow trout but acutely lethal for D. magna, whereas the 7.3 d HRT effluent was toxic for both organisms. The toxicity to D. magna was eliminated by 2 h of aeration for the 10 d HRT effluent, and the TIE procedure suggested iron as a cause of toxicity. However, the 2 h aeration eliminated the toxicity of the 7.3 d HRT effluent, only if performed after the pH rising to 9.3. Data regarding metal speciation indicated instability of both effluents during aeration and were consistent with the toxicity being caused by iron. The study indicates that design of passive treatment should include sufficient HRT and posttreatment aeration to meet acute toxicity requirements. THIS paper deals with the subject of inbye power as the mechanical . engineer sees it, and invites discussion, particularly from the electrical engineer. At the outset, it will be necessary to clear the ground a little by some definite statements. In this question of compressed air versus electricity for the transmission of power and driving of machinery in underground workings, we must see that there are definite fields that compressed air on the one hand, and electricity on the other, can fill to much greater advantage than the other, and in which there can be little or no direct competition, at least for the present. It is under conditions where these fields overlap, and as to where the line must be drawn between the two, that the respective merits of each must be considered. Steam was the first means used to transmit power from the surface of a mine to drive underground machinery, and so long as distances were short and means possible to ensure fairly efficient use of the steam, and where the fire hazard was not in evidence, it gave fairly efficient service. I have in mind an instance during my own connection with the mines-a duplex pump at the shaft bottom at Princess colliery, driven by steam, and which used the steam compound and condensing; and, but for the mechanical difficulties, it was a not inefficient proposition. The steam was taken direct from the surface boiler-plant through a line down the shaft, and used directly at the pump, being in effect a straight conversion from coal to steam to work done. It was the mechanical arrangement, and failure of the pump in that direction, that led to its removal and replacement by something better in the way of an electrically driven turbine pump. Given modern mechanical arrangements, such as a steam-turbine drive on a high-speed turbine pump, and all other parts made in accordance with best practice in the art of steam generation and use, a steam-driven unit fully as economical would have been obtained. But the central electric supply station, and all that that means or promises (not always the same), turned the scale against steam.

"The extractive metallurgy of gold is largely controlled by mineralogical factors such as the presence of refractory gold, particle size, gangue mineral associations, presence of preg-robbers, oxygen and cyanide consumers, and locking characteristics in base metal sulphides. Light microscopy and automated mineralogy techniques are regularly used to characterise the effect of these variables on gold recovery. However, despite their widespread application there are a range of limitations when grades are low. Typically, the analysis of low-grade samples requires the preparation and analysis of numerous polished blocks. This is often costly and time consuming, with complexities regarding analysing statistically representative particle quantities and problems overcoming stereological bias. This is compounded by the “nugget” effect and high tenor nature of gold mineralisation. X-ray Microscopy techniques have the potential to overcome many of these problems, in particular the statistical representivity of analysis, removing stereological bias and effectively locating phases that are present in ultra-trace proportions. In this paper we outline the potential benefits of employing X-ray Microscopy (XRM) in characterising gold losses from a typical Cu-Au porphyry project, which were illusive in 2D based analysis. The talk will also outline additional application areas of XRM within the extractive value chain."

Rock samples were taken, away from zones of mineralization , from seven sections of five rhyolitic zones as define d by Spence (l967) in the Noranda area. The purpose of the investigation was to test whether there were intrinsic differences between the zones which would differentiate between non-productive zones and productive zones. For the elements sought (major elements, Cu , Pb , Zn and S) , no clear chemical difference between the zones was found. Thus, identification of a favour able zone from the over -all composition of the zone does not appear promising. Within sampled sections, there is no clear gradual compositional change up through the sections. A capping of highly siliceous massive rhyolite is present in five of the sections sampled. A layer of relatively basic material occurs near the base of individual units. The third (mine zone) and later zones contain abundant pyroclastic material, where as the non-productive zones do not.

Gold occurrences have been known in the La Ronge Domain for many year . Mineable reserves have more recently been outlined and there is every prospect of a major gold camp being established in the domain within this decade. The La Ronge Domain lies in the Lower Proterozoic 'Trans-Hudson Orogen' and is part of a collage of Early Proterozoic crust comprising volcanoplutonic arcs, batholiths, associated volcaniclastics and volcanogenic sediments lying between the Superior Craton to the outheast and the reworked Archean basement/Aphebian cover terrain to the northwest. The domain has several lithostructural subdivisions, the most important of whjch , from a gold exploration point of view, is the Central Metavolcanic Belt. This belt is composed dominantly of a range of metavolcanic rocks and gabbroic to granitic intrusives, which geochemically resemble younger subduction-generated 'primitive' arcs developed on oceanic crust. U-Pb zircon geochronology indicates that the arc volcarusm and pre- to late-kjnematic plutonism occurred about 1890 Ma to 1850 Ma ago. The belt has an attained grade of upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and is relatively undeformed , though high strain zones occur locally. Most gold occurrences in the La Ronge Domain have been found in the Star-Waddy Lakes area of the Central Metavolcanic Belt, and in the Sulprude-MacKay Lakes area to the south which is interpreted as a tectonically dismembered part of the main belt. Both tratiformand vein-type gold occurrences are present in the domain; vein-type predominate and form nearly 90 per cent of the occurrences. The stratiform-type occurrences show a regional lithological a sociation with iron-rich sediments within proximal felsic volcanjc sequences. Some vein-type occurrences appear related to brittle fracturing associated with intrusive emplacement (the magmatic-hydrothermal "syn:' and "subvolcanic" veins) and faulting. However, most of the vein-type occurrences exhibit a spatial association with regionalscale ductile shear and other high strain zones, and were probably formed by metamorphichydrothermal processes.

En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.

This paper outlines the function of the Safety and Compensation Division of the Mining Association of British Columbia. After a general discussion of safety and the safety program now being followed in B.C., the author goes on to describe the wide-ranging aspects of compensation payments and company assessment rates. Special attention is also given to the problem of silicosis in mining operations. In appendices to the paper, the experience rating plan of the mining industry is compared to that recently adopted for the construction industry. Introduction The Mining Association of British Columbia consists of fifty-five member companies, including virtually all the producing mines as well as the larger exploration, contracting and development companies. On completion of an extensive study of safety and compensation in the mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia instituted a Safety and Compensation Division in 1954. The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 km north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is a surface mine operation and use the proven BIOX® and carbon in leach processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces of gold, and the operation will produce 96,700 ounces of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX® circuit is designed to treat 140,000 tpa of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 tpd of concentrate at a design sulphide sulphur grade of 17% S2-. The Runruno project is the first BIOX® plant to implement the Generation III BIOX® design principles. As part of the Generation III BIOX® program Outotec supplied a turnkey, containerised metallurgical laboratory to facilitate the first four stages of the BIOX® and ASTER™ inoculum build up requirements. BIOX® inoculum build-up was started during early January 2015 with 5 litres of stock cultures shipped from South Africa. The BIOX® culture was successfully adapted to concentrate produced from the mini plant during March 2015. The ASTER™ inoculum build-up commenced during early August 2015 utilising 27 litres of ASTER™ bacterial inoculum already adapted to similar process conditions expected during commercial operation. This paper will detail the various stages of inoculum build-up through to commissioning and ramp-up of the BIOX® and ASTER™ Processes at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX® design principles.

"The prevalent metal extraction processes for most reactive metals are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. The feed material for both of these processes is the anhydrous chloride of the metal under consideration. Dehydration of the feed material is then a critical step in the production of most reactive metals and requires rigorous thermodynamic analysis. Thermodynamic data for most of the reactive metal chloride hydrates have not been measured. Improper dehydration of the metal chloride may lead to a prohibitive amount of hydroxychloride, oxychloride, and oxide. To prevent hydrolysis a certain pressure of hydrogen chloride is required. An estimation and prediction model is presented for the vapour pressures of reactive metal chloride hydrates in an attempt to deduce the conditions necessary for dehydration to proceed without hydrolysis. Thermodynamic data including heat capacities, standard entropies, and standard enthalpies are estimated/predicted for all conceivable intermediate hydrate compounds. Estimations are based on published data as well as trends proven in similar systems. The thermodynamic estimations and predictions are presented for the magnesium, neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium chloride hydrates. INTRODUCTIONThe high reactivity of metals such as the alkalis, alkaline earths, and lanthanides prevents their reduction by traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgy. In their elemental form, these metals are raw materials in the manufacture of intermediate products such as alloys and electronic components. Currently the only two viable metal production methods are fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction. Various feed materials have been proposed for these processes. Using the chloride of the metal as a feed material offers advantages in separation and purity of the final product, as well as lower energy input. Chlorides, however, are hygroscopic and must be dehydrated before use. Improper dehydration will lead to a prohibitive amount of oxychloride which will lower efficiencies and contaminate the final product.Optimum conditions for proper dehydration of MgCl2•6H2O to produce pure MgCl2 without hydrolysis have been calculated from existent thermodynamic data and have been reported previously (Kipouros, 1987; 2001). Calculations were also performed for the case of production of pure anhydrous NdCl3 from NdCl3•6H2O (Roy, 1997)] and the mechanism of dehydration was elucidated. Some thermodynamic studies on the dehydration of chlorides of the rare earths have also been conducted (Sundstrom, 1997; Hong, 1997; Aschcroft, 1968; Haeseler, 1965; Ukraintseya, 1989)."

In this paper, Imperial Oil Limited reports briefly on the drilling by contract rigs of twenty-nine slim holes in the Virden, Smiley, and Souris Valley areas. The investigations showed that slim-hole penetration rates, as a result of careful control of drilling variables, can approach those achieved with 7 7/8-inch bits. It is concluded that slim-hole drilling is acceptable for development or exploratory work. Imperial also reports on the completion techniques and equipment that have been developed on twenty-seven tubingless 2 1/2-inch casing completions. Indications are that the method is economically desirable where excessive gas or water production is not anticipated.

In 1913, potash mineralization was recognized at a depth of over 7,000 feet in an oil-well hole (Norcanol's Radville No. 1 well) drilled near the town of Raddlle, Saskatchewan. Although, at this depth, potash is not considered mineable by conventional underground mining methods, this discovery shed the first light on the potash deposits of Saskatchewan in much the same manner as oil-well drilling was responsible for the first discovery of potash in the Carlsbad Basin of New Mexico in 19:25. The discovery near Radville alerted the oil-well geologists and, as a result potash mineralization was recognized in the Verbata No. 2 well, near Unity, Saskatchewan, in 1946. The mineralization, which was at a depth ?of 3,466 feet, graded more than 20 per cent K20 over a thickness of eleven feet. The aim of this work is to clarify the role of microstructure heterogeneity in the initiation and growth of cracks in a lost foam cast A319 for low cycle fatigue (LCF) loading condition. Because 2D analysis fail to establish the scenario of damage events, this study is based on 3D in situ analysis using synchrotron X-ray tomography during LCF test performed at 200°C. If X-ray tomography is now an established technique to study damage development in 3D, its application for relatively high temperature cyclic tests has never been done so far. Initial 3D observations of damage show that the cracks that lead to fracture initiate near large pores and propagate into the hard particles 3D network of the eutectic regions.

A flowsheet has been developed to treat the flotation tailings from a copper mine in Mexico to recover gold and silver by cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The plant will treat ~15,000 t/day of a 60:40 blend of current flotation tailings and the mine’s historic tailings. The tailings also contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper, and the economic viability of the project is strengthened by recovering most of the copper and cyanide associated with this process. The solution and solid phases in the CIP tailings will be separated in a counter current decantation (CCD) circuit and the CCD solution overflow will be treated by a SART Process. Copper precipitates as a salable copper sulphide product in the SART Process and the cyanide that is associated with the copper complex is regenerated as free cyanide. After SART, a portion of the SART product solution will be recycled to leach to reuse the free cyanide, while the remaining solution will be used as wash water in the CCD circuit. Incorporation of the SART Process in the flowsheet allows the CIP circuit to be operated aggressively as a gold plant, which means most of the silver in solution passes through CIP to SART. Silver co-precipitates with copper in SART and is recovered very efficiently with the copper sulphide by-product. Incorporation of SART also allows the leach and CIP circuits to be operated with relatively high levels of free cyanide, which enhances silver leach kinetics and helps keep copper from loading onto the carbon in CIP. The flowsheet was developed in the laboratory and successfully demonstrated in a fully-integrated pilot plant in 2018.

Among the known iron deposits in Canada, many are of low grade and require beneficiation to produce an acceptable blast-furnace feed. Some of the deposits have never been considered for commercial exploitation due to the lack of a suitable concentrating process. A number of deposits of this type are located in Northern Ontario. The problem in upgrading these deposits is three fold. Firstly, the iron occurs as a mixture of magnetite and hematite. Secondly, the grain size of the material can be fine to very fine. Thirdly, the complex mixture of gangue minerals, which consists invariably of silica, flaky silicates and carbonates, slimes excessively on fine grinding. Algoma's efforts to concentrate these iron-bearing materials culminated in the development of a "Selective Flocculation and Desliming Process" employing slimes removal as the sole beneficiation technique. The process was applied successfully in the laboratory using two stages of grinding and a total of seven deslimings. Prior to the removal of slimes, the iron-bearing fines were selectively flocculated from a thoroughly dispersed pulp using a modified starch as flocculant, Sodium silicate was employed as dispersant. An attempt was made to optimize some of the process variables using material from one specific iron formation near the town of Geraldton in Northern Ontario. The preparation of the starch proved most critical. This matter, and the method used to evaluate the degree of breakdown of the starch molecule, are therefore discussed in some detail.

"North America has entered a period when greatly increased attention must be given to energy .supply and demand by government, industry and individuals. Such increasing concern about energy will be a long-term phenomenon, accompanied by continuing examination of future resource development and utilization. Those engaged in or associated with mining, a major energy consumer, are likely to experience a variety of problems which are associated with the end of an era of low-cost, virtually unlimited energy supply. Their efforts, furthermore, may be subjected to escalating public and government scrutiny, involvement and control. However, ever-growing recognition of the real and urgent necessity to systematically develop new energy supplies within Canada and the United States will provide unusual challenges and opportunities for those companies and individuals with mining expertise. The vast deposits of coal, tar sands and oil shale provide a relative certainty of supply which only stands to gain in attractive ness with time. In order to benefit from this aspect of certain supply, nevertheless, synthetic fuels will have to be produced at a tolerable cost. This will always require excellent process design and engineering. As synfuels development expands to any significant production level, however, and Jess than ideal reserves are scheduled, the usual geologic-productivity complexities encountered in making ore out of low-value rock will tend to become of prime concern. It is for this reason that the services of experienced mining personnel will be in growing demand in energy production."

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.
