"9.1. IntroductionThe application of the electron microprobe for in-situ analysis of platinum-group minerals (PGM), first reported by Borovskii et at. (1959) and Genkin (1959), has resulted in a large and growing number of analyses of unidentified PGM. Figure 9.1 charts the increase in the number of reported unnamed PGM from 3 in 1959 to a total of 140 by 1979. All these minerals, with the exception of UN1968-5 and UN1976-1, were analyzed with the electron microprobe.There has been no recognised or consistent manner for reporting these unidentified PGM. The term ""unnamed"" has been used for PGM that are considered to be new species without a name as well as for PGM which have not been exhaustively compared to named and unnamed PGM in order to determine whether they are unique. Many of the so-called unnamed PGM are only unnamed because of poor microprobe analyses or because larger than usual elemental substitutions (e.g. Bi for As) made it difficult to calculate the true stoichiometry. Some of these unnamed minerals have been unnecessarily reported with non-stoichiometric formulae, as discussed by Cabri (1980). Better analytical data should reduce the number of such proposals.Another unfortunate practice, possibly used to by-pass the scrutiny of the Commission for New Minerals and Mineral Names, I.M.A., is to report a ""new"" mineral by referring to it by a name made up of its constituent elements. This has been deplored on a number of occasions (cf. discussion in Fleischer et at., 1976, p. 179), but some journals continue to publish such material. The Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names has not recognised such ""names"" and these PGM are therefore included in this chapter with other unnamed minerals.A further example of inconsistency in reporting unnamed minerals is the report of a specific ideal stoichiometry with no further details (not even an analysis!); sometimes with a note that this will be reported in greater detail in due course. I have also been guilty of similar optimistic statements and, unfortunately, it is not always possible to follow through. Some authors give data on unnamed minerals in such a discrete manner that their reports are sometimes missed in literature searches."

BRUCITE associated with highly metamorphosed Precambrian limestone was discovered in the vicinity of Rutherglen in northern Ontario by the writer during field work on the limestones of that district in 1937, and later was identified in similar limestone at Bryson and Wakefield, Quebec. The brucite occurs as granules disseminated through the limestone (Figure 1) and comprises from 20 to 35 per cent of the rock. Such rocks may be referred to as predazzites or pencatites, depending on the proportions of the constituent minerals. In this paper, however, the general term brucitic limestone is used to designate limestone containing brucite. In none of the deposits does the magnesia content of the rock approach that of magnesite, and in the deposits near Bryson and Wakefield the magnesia content is only that of dolomite. Therefore, without some method of concentrating the brucite, the deposits would be of little or no more value as a source of magnesia than is ordinary pure dolomite, which is abundant in many parts of Canada. Investigations in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines have, however, resulted in the development of a method whereby, from certain of the deposits, pure calcined brucite, or magnesia, in granular form can be obtained, apparently at a cost that will enable it to compete in eastern Canada with imported magnesia. The granular magnesia so obtained appears to be highly suitable for use in basic refractories, for making magnesium metal, and for various other purposes for which magnesia is commonly used. Prospecting in the neighbourhoods of the original discoveries has resulted in a number of other deposits being found in each of the three areas, and there is now apparently available s1.dficient brucitic limestone of a grade that will lend itself to commercial exploitation to supply for many years a large part of the present and prospective Canadian market for magnesia and its products. Furthermore, it is expected that additional deposits will be discovered as prospectors and others become more familiar with the appearance of brucitic limestone.

The La Ronge. Kisseynew, Glennie Lake and Flin Flon domains. the main focu for gold exploration in the southeast part of the Saskatchewan Shield, were subject to continental glacial ice advances from the northeast during the Quaternary. Based on forty-four auger hole along with surficial mapping, the general Quaternary stratigraphy in this area is observed to be composed of a lower till unit , an overlying stratified unit of glaciofluvial sand and gravel and/or a glaciolacustrine silt-clay unit. an upper till. and an upper tratified unit. The lower till is commonly found throughout the geological domains except where it has been eroded in glaciofluvial or fluvial channels. Glacial Lake Agassiz fo rmerly covered most of these prospective domains. The lacustrine deposits associated with the lake impede surficial geochemical surveys including soil. lake sediment. and biogeochemical surveys. The approximate extent of clay cover can be predicted from beach elevations. For instance. in the Waddy Lake area. clay i not known to occur above about 1,400 feet (425 m) elevation. Exploration techniques are hampered by clay in at least one third of the volcanic belt. Thi s influence is indicated by the fact that nearly all gold prospect found to date are located above 1,400 feet (425 m) while the area of clay cover is vi rtually unexplored. The upper till i related to a minor ice readvance. This till is the medium often sampled during soil surveys in the area . lts value as a geochemical ampling medium is dependent on the extent of erosional contact with bedrock highs on the lower till. Those areas which are relatively free of lacustrine and fluvial deposits are those where surface geochemical methods work best. In the Waddy Lake volcanic belt approximately 25-50% of the area may be suitable for surficial surveys. The area of the Star Lake prospect occurs above the 1,500 foot (460 m) elevation and was not covered by Lake Agas iz. The effectivene of till sampling as a surface sampling medium was tested in those areas above the clay level. Till orientat ion surveys were carried out at the Star Lake property and the Tower Lake prospect (Waddy Lake area) within the La Ronge Domain . Gold grain counts and analy es of heavy mineral concent rate from 7 kg surface ti ll samples were used to delineate dispersion trains down-ice from mineralization. In addition, the clay fraction and a 30 g (-80 mesh) subsample from the same till sample, were analyzed for gold . The key to successful mine production plan and subsequent operation is efficient mine layout design and optimization. Pit layout design and optimization allow the delineation and extraction of mineable reserves and the minimum waste subject to slope stability, economic, quality and quantity constraints. Many design and optimization software packages have been developed to aid this intensive and challenging process. These packages include VULCAN, SURPAC, DATAMINE, GEMCOM, MICROLYNX, MEDSYSTEM and MINESIGHT. These software packages are developed as integrated computer-aided systems used for database creation, survey, geological and geostatistical modeling, mine planning and production optimization and environmental modeling. In Turkey, many mining companies still plan and design mine layouts with traditional hand methods. In this study, VULCAN has been used to design and optimize the Eti-Bor A.S. Kestelek Boran Open Pit Mine in Western Turkey. The main objective is to show the company the superior advantages of mine planning software for designing and optimizing mine layouts over the traditional hand methods. Drill hole data used by the company to estimate the reserves for planning are used in this study. The ore grade varies between %1,04 B2O3 to %47,33 B2O3. The pit toe and crest strings are projected using variable batter angles and berm distances. On the north side, batter angle is 180 and berm distance is 25 meters, on the south side, batter angle is 320 and berm distance is 15 meters. In addition to that open pit bench height is 10 meter. The concepts of block modeling are applied to the Kestelek open pit mine with detailed ore grade modeling for each block. The Lerchs-Grossmann?s algorithm is used to optimize this mine based on the block model, the economic block values for each block and the underlying field constraints. The results from VULCAN were similar to the estimates by hand. The reserve estimates from VULCAN is 13,192,870 tons compared with the hand estimate of 13,200,000 tons, overburden estimates of 15,622,889 m3 compared with 15,000,000m3 obtained by hand with a stripping ratio 1.18:1 (m3:ton) from VULCAN versus 1.14:1 (m3:ton) from hand estimate. Vulcan improves the efficiency, speed and reproducibility of the planning results. It provides mining engineers, geologists and surveyors with a cost-effective modular system for assessing and planning the mine layouts. Furthermore, Vulcan?s specific modules allow efficient access and manipulation of databases, open pit mine design, block models, optimized 3D mine layouts, and more. However, for competitive business in Eastern Europe, VULCAN should improve its software support. Effective training, help desk support systems and nearby distributors with just-in-time solutions to company problems will generate competitive business for VULCAN.

DURING the development of froth flotation for the treatment of sulphide ores, a certain amount of information was collected about a few of the nonmetallic minerals, and occasionally the gangue minerals in the sulphide ores showed an embarrassing tendency to float. However, for many years efforts were expended to develop reagents that would cause wetting and depression of these minerals. Among the nonmetallics, the minerals sulphur, graphite, and talc probably should be classified as 'natural floaters', and perhaps sericite. They respond to almost any type of flotation reagent, and their beneficiation by flotation had been attempted years ago. Flotation of sulphur is now common practice, and graphite was concentrated during the World War in many mills, most of which have now closed down. A talc mill has just been constructed, and another may soon be erected. Second to the 'natural floaters' come the 'easy floaters', cassiterite, fluorite, barite, mica, colloidal gangue, and paper pulp from white water of paper mills. That these materials responded to some of the early flotation reagents, as oleic acid, has long been known; occasional references to their behaviour are found in the very early flotation literature and in that of today. In general, however, nonmetallic minerals, valued at $2.00 to $15.00 per ton, have for a long time been regarded as cheap products and not worth much beneficiation. Consequently, only high-grade natural deposits suitable for direct mining and sale have been gouged out. Furthermore, the mining of these minerals has too frequently been in the hands of 'super-practical' men-men of no technical or other training, willing to work for a very low compensation. From the social standpoint, nonmetallics has been the field for small, untrained enterprisers with little money to spend on plant or equipment. But times have been changing. The impact of technically trained men on the old industry has revealed appalling losses and inefficien-cies and proved the value of processing materials discarded or avoided by the old regime.

This paper presents the experiences and views of women involved in the mining industry as determined from a questionnaire that was circulated across the Canadian mining industry. Globally, there have been significant studies done to understand the historic and global variety of women?s participation in this industry1. The reason for focusing on women?s experiences here in Canada is because women?s percentage representation at 14.4% in the mineral industry workforce falls below the overall labour force average of 47.4%2. Notably, a recent article in the Globe and Mail newspaper points out that adequate representation of women in leading of organizations is more of a matter of competitiveness and innovation rather than purely a ?women?s issue?3. This paper will provide some insight into the reasons why women join and stay in the mining industry and shed some light into the reasons for the overall low representation in this sector. The authors believe, as stated in a study from the London Business School, that a gender-balanced workforce is one way of providing the best results in areas that drive innovation4. Women represent a key stakeholder group that can help enhance the mining industry?s sustainability through innovation. The women who responded to the questionnaire represent many different areas within the mining industry, including a broad range of roles in industry, government, academia and in the supplies and services sector. The paper is intended to raise awareness about issues that women encounter that contribute or detract from career satisfaction in the mining industry. The survey provides an overall understanding of why women pursue or work in mining, and why women either remain or choose to leave it. The advantages and disadvantages experienced by women are highlighted, along with a summary of the possible initiatives that could be undertaken by employers as opportunities to improve the attraction of the mining industry for career minded women. As well, the survey provides a summary of the top ten features that are already in place at various organizations and community groups that have been identified as key for supporting and encouraging women to join and remain in the industry. Not surprisingly, the survey identifies that one of the key ingredients for retention of women in mining is the provision of mentors and sponsors. Another key aspect for retention is the provision of progressive employment policies that address the need for a degree of flexibility in work hours and a culture of balance between work and personal life demands. The survey and results are portrayed only from a female perspective since it is largely women?s perceptions that will inevitably be transmitted to others who plan on entering the field.

"Irgiredmet Institute carried out the study on the development of gold recovery technology from refractory ore from a Russian deposit. The ore contained 1.1 g/t Au, 1.5% of pyrite and 2.4% of pyrrhotite. The recovery of gold achieved was 84.7% using gravity with generation of high grade recoverable gold concentrate and gravity middling. In the course of lime treatment, cyanidation of the middling followed by tailings detoxification the consumption of reagents was 13.0 kg/t CaO, 95 kg/t NaCN and 72 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the concentrate. This was capital intensive.In order to decrease the consumption of reagents, magnetic separation of the middling of the concentrates from gravity separation was added to this flow sheet. Pyrrotite recovered to magnetic fraction, which did not contain gold in accordance to this advanced flow sheet. The mass yield of pyrite goldbearing non-magnetic fraction decreased down to 1.5 times in relative to gravity middling. The slurry filtration prior to and after cyanidation allowed the organization of cyanide solution recycling.The results of pilot plant tests using the developed flow sheet showed that the content of pyrrhotite in the non-magnetic fraction decreased from 59.1% to 11.3%. The reagents consumption was 12 kg/t CaO, 3 kg/t NaCN and 16 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the pyrite concentrate. The total gold recovery using this flow sheet was 83.4%. Due to a decreased consumption of reagents, cost efficiency of the process was achieved. Based on the results of this research, a project design criteria was developed. A processing plant with the annual throughput of 2.6 million tonnes of ore is being designed."

Introduction The subject of basic refractories is daily becoming of increased importance in metallurgical processes, and there is a constantly growing necessity for the development of better materials. This fact, together with the realization that Canada possesses one of the best sources of such refractories in the British Empire, if not in the world, made it appear? advisable that the subject be presented to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress at the 1927 meeting. Having been in close touch with developments in the Canadian product during the past five years, G. M. Carrie was requested to prepare such a paper. The Canadian producers of magnesia refractories have succeeded in developing the product to a place where it has almost entirely displaced imported materials from the Canadian market. These developments were made possible by a close study of the methods of preparation of the material, and by an exceedingly careful control of the manufacturing process so as to obtain a thorough blending of the different constituents with the resultant uniformity of composition. This point is very important to the metallurgist, as un-uniform materials are a potent cause of difficulties in most manufacturing processes and the constant trend is towards their elimination. The temperature at which the Canadian material is burned ensures high specific gravity and thorough shrinkage. The grain size of the product is so controlled that the voids are only just sufficient to allow of proper bonding, thus making possible a dense, hard bottom affording high resistance to erosion and shock. Careful proportioning of the constituent elements absolutely prevents disintegration.

"7.1. Glossary of the Platinum-Group Minerals7.1.1. IntroductionA glossary of the platinum-group minerals (POM) serves as a useful introduction to a chapter on their mineralogy. Earlier glossaries (Cabri, 1972, 1976) were prepared for different purposes and composed in a different manner. As for most mineralogical textbooks, from Dana's System of Mineralogy, 3rd Edition (1850) , to Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species (1980), this glossary is primarily a chemical classification, arranged here in two tables. Table 7.1 groups the mineralforming compounds of the six platinum-group elements (POE) according to their essential anion(s) or according to the nonPOE element in intermetallic compounds. Table 7.2 is a similar listing for the native metals and alloys of the POE. Both tables include unidentified POM considered to be bona fide new minerals requiring additional study for complete characterization and recognition (see Chapter 9*). Some information on the chemistry of the POM is given in the sections on X-ray data (7 .2) and ore microscopy (7 .3). Because the overwhelming majority of POM have been characterized by the electron microprobe, a more detailed account of representative analyses is given in Chapter 8**. The total POM listed in Tables 7.1 and 7.2 is about 100, after deleting some which would not qualify as discrete species if found today, but which are still recognized on historical grounds; e.g. iridosmine, osmiridium, platiniridium. Tables 7.1 and 7.2 also include 28 unnamed POM; included because they are considered to be probably new species (Cabri 1981 b). The referral scheme for unnamed minerals is the same as in Chapter 9. There are considerably more palladium minerals known than other POM; the proportion of total species (listed in Tables 7.1 and 7 .2) for the POE is: Pd 48%, Pt 21 o/o , Ru and Ir 9% each, Rh 8% and Os 5%. These proportions are in marked contrast to the estimated cosmic abundance, as compiled for average type C1 chondrite by Naldrett and Duke (1980): Pt 29%, Ru 20%, Pd, Ir and Os 15% each, and Rh 6%."

"This paper was' prepared to emphasize the part that coal washing tables can play in the development of many of the reserves of coking coals in Western Canada_ It covers a brief history of the development of the coal washing table through the present third-generation unit, which suspends from overhead steel beams and is driven by a counter-rotating gear mechanism. The design and operation of this unique table are covered in detail.An analysis of actual operating data is included, with explicit statistical breakdowns of the table products. The data used were actually produced by operating coal companies, and also produced by the United States Bureau of Mines while gathering data for a research investigation. Table feed capacity is discussed, as well as performance criteria and the parameters of relative table performance. Several typical table flowsheets are described, emphasizing the specific reasons for their use. The paper covers the past and present value of the table to the United States coal industry, and makes mention of the newest addition to the family of suspended, multiple-deck, counter-rotating, gear-driven, coal washing tables, the CONCENCO ""88"" Deister table."

A resource document, prepared for the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines, which outlines aspects of occupational health and safety in the Canadian metallurgical industry has been expanded to provide examples of some practical solutions. General process descriptions are provided in conjunction with some of the major potential hazards associated with each step. Emissions to the working environment, particularly around converters, are discussed. Newer metallurgical processes, the role of automation and other advances in the metallurgical industry are described with respect to their impact on the work place. The role of staff and unit employees in providing safe working conditions in the complex metallurgical plant of today is outlined and the need for close cooperation within the human sector emphasized. The technology is available and is being applied to integrate the complex process requirements with realistic regulations to control emissions and provide a safe, healthy environment in metallurgical plants.

"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. This innovative multi-faceted software implementation incorporates: web-delivered plant information systems; area-wide control loop performance assessment (using sophisticated algorithms to evaluate poorly performing controllers); and integrated alarm management functions.The system has enabled a project to improve plant operations through better process control. Maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers all can see the performance of the controllers, and the performance of the plant itself, through webdelivered graphics and reports. Information is combined from many sources, real-time, historical, relational and analytical, to provide a complete picture of plant operation.The web-based solution centralizes the administration of user access, and simplifies the deployment of several different kinds of information to many desktops. It is an extensible system that allows users to create and share their own web pages and data views.The paper will discuss the solution architecture and the improvements the IT, operations, maintenance, and engineering groups have experienced, and overall benefits to the facility.

The application of biologically assisted methods for metal extraction in the mining industry has a long history, but development of modern techniques has been relatively slow. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in the industry with the recent development of methods to successfully treat base metals concentrates. Two major pilot plant programs for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates have been initiated in the past year and results from one are beginning to be released. This paper provides an overview of methods that have been applied in the past, from the earliest deliberate applications of the technology, through the copper and uranium heap and dump leach applications, the more highly engineered agitated tank leach gold applications and the developments currently taking place in the industry.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

British Columbia is an important producer of a variety of industrial minerals for both domestic and export markets. Some commodities such as limestone, dolomite, gypsum, calcium carbonate, silica, barite and magnetite are raw materials for well-established industries located in British Columbia, Alberta and northwestern USA. Others, like magnesite, sulphur, jade, asbestos, dimension stone and clay products, are mainly exported in processed form to overseas customers. Companies are developing markets for relatively new mineral products, including pumice, volcanic cinder and zeolites. A number of attractive geological targets have been identified by industry while research by government geologists has outlined the potential for refractory minerals, gemstones, garnet, nepheline syenite, carbonatites, residual kaolin, igneous apatite and peat.

SINCE the opening of the Beattie mine, in 1933, the concentrate produced by flotation has been considered refractory. As the gold extraction by cyanidation was poor, the concentrate, during the first four and a half years of operation, was shipped to a smelter for further treatment. After the installation of the cyanide plant, in 1934, seventy per cent of the gold in the concentrate was recovered before shipment to the smelter. In 1937, a roasting plant was built so that treatment might be complete at the mine. Much experimental work had been done by a number of investigators prior to the installation of the roasters, but none of them had seriously attempted to identify the causes of, or the elements responsible for, the refractory behaviour of the concentrate. Intensive investigation in this direction commenced in the Beattie lab-oratory in July, 1938, has led not only to the identification of several causes contributory to the refractory behaviour, but also to revisions in procedure and principles with respect to roasting Beattie concentrate in particular and arsenical concentrates in general. The accuracy of the identification of these causes and the soundness of the principles is borne out by interpretation of roasting plant records, by improvements and simplification since applied. to plant operation, and also by laboratory and test-plant results on arsenical concentrate produced by another mine. It is the purpose here to present an account and interpretation of the laboratory investigation, together with a correlation of laboratory and plant results. Incomplete extraction of the gold by cyanidation after roasting is due primarily to the nature of the material roasted, and secondarily to the manner in which it has been roasted. There is a possibility that better extraction may be obtained by improvements in both particulars.
