La méthode d?exploitation traditionnelle de la mine est le chantier chambre-magasin. Cependant, lors de l?exploitation d?un chantier, nous avons été confrontés à un problème de soutirage. Le minerai abattu est resté accroché à l?intérieur du chantier ce qui nous obligea à soutirer environ 200 wagons, représentant 700 tonnes. Suite à l?ampleur de la situation, nous avons décidé de finir l?exploitation du chantier par la méthode sous-niveau long trou retraité. Cette première expérience de récupération de piliers ayant été réalisée avec succès, nous avons décidé de continuer avec deux autres récupérations de piliers afin de pouvoir augmenter notre expertise autant au niveau technique qu?au niveau économique.

"Buried, possibly mineralized granite cupolas at the Silsilah tin deposit in Saudi Arabia (lat. 26°06' N, long. 42°40' E) have been successfully located using a closely spaced electric-field-ratio profiling technique. In this study, electrical fields at 27 and 270 Hz across grounded electrodes spaced 50 m apart were measured along six traverses. This method is interpretable by inspection, unlike the dipole-dipole technique, which requires mathematical modeling for interpretation.In the study area, the technique allowed the authors to identify and distinguish among unroofed granite cupolas, cupolas with their aplite-pegmatite apical contact zones intact, strong (quartz-rich) and weak (relatively quartz-poor) greisens, dikes, faults, and pervasively argillized rocks.This method should be useful in the valuation of other shallow mineral prospects in similar settings in other parts of the world, especially deposits for which the location of vertical contrasts is important, such as veins or mineralized zones associated with the apexes of small igneous cupolas."

"INTRODUCTIONPine Point Mines, operated by Cominco Ltd., is located approximately 65 miles east of Hay River, N.W.T. on the south shore of Great Slave Lake.The milling operation started in the fall of 1965 with a capacity of 5,000 tpd. An addition was put into operation late in 1968 to bring the nominal capacity up to 8,000 tpd. The present milling rate is 11,000 tpd.With a feed grade of approximately 2.9% Pb and 6.0% Zn the annual concentrate production amounts to roughly 130,000 SDT of lead concentrate and 370,000 SDT of zinc concentrate for a total of 1/2 million tons of product.This tonnage is moved by railroad. Pine Point is served by the Great Slave Lake Division (G.S.L.) of the Canadian National Railways which connects to the Northern Alberta Railway System (N.A.R.) at Roma Junction, at Peace River, Alberta. The system in turn connects to the CNR and the CPR in Edmonton, Alberta. From here the concentrates move inland chiefly to Trail, B.C., with some shipment to other Canadian and U.S. smelters, and to the port facilities of Pacific Coast Terminals at New Westminster, B.C. for offshore export.This paper will focus on the problems associated with the movement of lead and zinc concentrates from Pine Point to port facilities on the west coast."

"Titanium possesses an exceptional and wide-range resistance to chlorides and their compounds when compared to most corrosion-resistant engineering alloys (CRAs) used in the chemical process industry. This natural resistance to chlorides stems from titanium’s protective, tenacious, and readily rehealable titanium oxide surface film, which is chemically stable over a wide range of pH and redox potentials in aqueous environments. This passive film explains titanium’s elevated resistance to anodic pitting, crevice and stress corrosion, and erosion-corrosion in aqueous chloride environments.Guidelines for successful selection and application of industrial titanium alloys are derived from an extensive laboratory test database and more than forty years of industrial/chemical service experience. These guidelines are simplified, and alloy corrosion performance is assessed with respect to four basic aqueous chloride service categories where selection or consideration of titanium is highly merited. An overview of historical titanium alloy applications in chloride-rich environments in a wide variety of process industries substantiates their exceptional chloride tolerance. These industrial titanium alloys are cost-competitive with stainless steels and nickel alloys, readily commercially available, and routinely fabricated and welded in the shop and field via well-established methods."

There are also cases in which projects that evaluate to a positive mean probable value, should not be invested in. The author will present a model for ?project-control?which includes an adaptation of a well know grade-control concept. "This research determines shear strength and stiffness properties of bedding planes and joints in the roof strata rocks within 7.5 to 9 m (25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois #6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). A shear test loading device was designed into a 1.334 kN (150 t) Forney Compression Loading Machine to perform direct shear tests in accordance with ASTM D5607-08 “Standard Test Method for Performing Laboratory Direct Shear Strength Tests of Rock Specimens under Constant Normal Force”. The data were used to determine peak and residual friction angles and the dilation angle. A total of 49 bedding plane samples were tested, out of which 46 (36 intact and 10 relatively weak and loose) samples passed QA/QC procedures in accordance to ASTM D5607. Samples from eight (8) different bedding planes- shale/limestone (SL), shale/sandstone (SSs), shale/bone (SB), laminated sandstone (LS), shale/shale (SS), bone/bone (BB), bone/limestone (BL), and limestone/limestone (LL) were tested. The number of samples tested for each bedding plane were: SL- 11, SSs- 8, SB- 5, BB- 4, LS- 6, SS- 9, BL- 1, and LL- 2. Peak and residual shear strength values at 2.75 MPa normal stress range 1.06 – 6.26 MPa and 0.82 MPa to 0.82 – 4.14 MPa, respectively. The average normal and shear stiffness values are about 11.98 GPa/m and 3.11 GPa/m. Dilation angles are low (<10?) and negative in some cases. Angle of sliding friction values range from 9? to 42?. Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were less than 10.INTRODUCTIONRock mass may be defined as the total in situ rock medium containing bedding planes, faults, joints, folds and other structural features. Therefore, it is discontinuous and may have heterogeneous and anisotropic engineering properties. Upon creation of an excavation in a rock mass, bedding planes and joints are the most likely points of failure initiation. The failure typically occurs either in tensile or shear mode. Upon failure initiation stresses are transferred to the neighboring rock mass and the failure progresses until stability is achieved through equilibrium of stresses and strength. An example of this mechanism is development of the pressure arch. This study determined the shear strength and stiffness properties in shear and compression of bedding planes and joints in the immediate roof strata rocks within 7.5-9 m ( 25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois No. 6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). Since such data are currently not available for Illinois Coal Basin mines, researchers and engineers have been using estimated values for design purposes. The immediate roof lithology in the proposed mining area consists of shale 0.62 m; Bone 0.09 m (0.3 ft.); Limestone, 0.10 m (0.33 ft.); Shale 2.37 m (7.9 ft.); and sandstone 0.55 m (1.83 ft.). The bedding plane samples were provided by a mine in south-eastern Illinois operating at a depth of about 180 m (600 ft.)."

The treatment of aqueous CuSO4-H2SO4- As-Sb solutions by electrodialysis in order to separate and concentrate species of interest has recently been studied. Results show that it is possible to separate copper from arsenic in electrodialysis cells. The separation of copper from antimony is also possible. Transport rate ranges that could be achieved, depending on experimental conditions, are 0.2 to 0.6 mol per hour per square metre of membrane for copper, 0.65 to 2.8 for sulphate, and 0.016 to 0.03 for arsenic. Transport rates for antimony were inconclusive due to its very low solubility in the studied systems. Solution agitation and increasing temperature markedly increased the process rates. Advancements in this area require further work in both the thermodynamics (speciation) and kinetics of complex CuSO4- H2SO4-H2O systems, where impurities, other than As and Sb, and additives should be taken into account to gain a deeper understanding of the application of ED to copper electrorefining electrolytes

Goldcorp Inc.?s Red Lake Mine (RLM) is situated in the Red Lake Mining District, a history rich North Western Ontario mining community. Red Lake Mine formerly known as the Dickenson Mine has experienced various degree and type of bursting since the 1960?s. During the 1960?s burst were common in shrinkage stope box hole pillars. After discovering the High Grade Zone (HGZ) between its 30th and 39th levels, the mine has changed its mining method to mechanized cut and fill with cemented paste fill. The rock mass at RLM is mainly massive basalt-ultramafic and behaves in a manner consistent with massive brittle rock. This paper presents the use of empirical and numerical design techniques. The use of the Span versus RMR graph to determine critical stope spans at RLM and the use of numerical design techniques to determine the stability of the sills and post pillars. Selecting of a sill pillar dimension is illustrated using four different failure criteria?s. The four failure criteria are m & s failure criteria, the Pillar Stability Graph, deviatoric stress ???-?3), and induced stress level criteria ?1 /UCS, which are calibrated to RLM?s ground conditions. A wide range of case histories has been studied ranging from stable to highly burst prone ground conditions in order to calibrate the failure criteria to observed conditions and quantified to local micro seismic system.

"NVI Mining’s Myra Falls Operation is a 4,000 mtpd copper/zinc flotation circuit with by product gold of ~28,000 ounces per year. Gold recovery has historically averaged 40-55%, however, a portion of this was recovered in the zinc concentrate and received poor payment. Two Knelson CD-30 Concentrators have been operating in the grinding circuit since 1992, with gravity recovery averaging about 2-5% over that time period.The Myra Falls gravity circuit was one of the very first hard rock mining installations operating in the world with automated Knelsons. The mine has employed a unique and unusual upgrading method for the Knelson concentrate that had never been evaluated as to its efficiency. Recent Gravity Recoverable Gold Testing by McGill University, and mathematical modelling of the Gravity Circuit by Knelson Gravity Solutions indicated the gravity circuit was not living up to its potential. Myra Falls Personnel changed the upgrade system-operating regime, and a complete gravity audit of the grinding circuit was carried out, with the results confirming the initial suspicions. Gravity recovery increased from 5% to 15%, with overall gold recovery improving by 5%.INTRODUCTIONNVI Mining operates a 4000 tpd mine and mill complex on Vancouver Island. The milling circuit consists of open circuit rod milling, closed circuit ball milling, gravity recovery, copper flotation, zinc flotation, and tails disposal. There are two milling circuits, “A” circuit, and “B” circuit."

At the 25th Annual B.C. Mine Reclamation Symposium in September 2001, Huckleberry Mines Limited received the Jake MacDonald Reclamation Award for its exemplary mine waste management plan, conceived to prevent the onset of acid mine drainage and facilitate reclamation of the site. The mine is an excellent example of a total mine waste management plan, with all materials scheduled in detail for the life of the mine. The filling plan for the waste management facility takes into consideration the requirement for permanently flooding the potentially acid generating rock. From an acid generation point of view, the tailings fall in the zone of potentially acid generating material. To avoid long-term ARD concerns, it is planned to float pyrite out of the tailings towards the end of the mine life, thereby generating a non-acid generating tailings stream which will be used to cap the deposited mine waste. The pyrite-rich tailings will be discharged into the deeper portion of the impoundment. On closure, a permanent water cover will be maintained over the mine waste. Only beaches of non-acid generating tailings will remain exposed. Mining will be phased to also allow one of the pits to provide storage for potentially acid generating rock and to be flooded at the end of mine life.

An ultra-low profile LHD has been developed by EJC Mining Equipment of Burlington, Ontario for narrow-reef mining applications. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during the evolution of the machine&apos;s design and subsequent field testing. Continuing research and development focuses on optimizing machine performance and controllability, reducing emissions, and enhancing maintainability. Details will be given on field trial experience and ongoing test work being carried out at the manufacturing facility.

"Since year 2000 the gold recovery into copper concentrate at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting has reduced considerably during the summer months. This initiated a testwork program in the fall 2003 to find reasons and solutions for such change. During the testwork mineralogical factors, water quality effects and different reagents were evaluated. The reason for the lower recovery appeared to be the sensitivity of some collectors to pulp temperature. As a result of the work different collectors are being used in the mill in the summer than in the winter. A modification to the water system was also made to provide cooler water to the mill in the summer months.INTRODUCTIONHudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBMS) is located in Northern Manitoba, just on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The complex consist of four different mines, Callinan, Trout Lake, Konuto Lake and 777 mine including copper smelter and zinc hydrometallurgical plants producing metallic copper and zinc. Gold is a very important byproduct providing about 30% of the mine revenue. In early 1990s when the company was facing declining ore reserves and was starting to gradually close down the operations, the 777’th exploration drill hole discovered a new orebody, which initiated a $0.5 billion expansion program. The main projects were a new 777 hoist with underground development and a new zinc cell house. About $30 million was used to increase the mill throughput to the present 2.27 million tonnes or 2.5 million short tons per year. The expansion programs were finished by the end of the year 2003.Historically the gold recovery at HBMS has varied between 60 and 70%. The recovery has been somewhat lower during the summer months. Gold recovery improvement projects were conducted throughout the 1990s, but were not focused on the seasonal gold recovery variance. However, since 2000, when the water system modifications to meet the increased water demand were completed, the gold recovery during the summer has been much lower than in the past. In August 2003 gold recovery fell below 30%, which initiated a metallurgical research program to discover the reasons behind the low gold recovery in the summer."

"An index to evaluate the amenability for processing of different coals is implemented. The index is based on the well-known Mayer-curve or M-curve. The index is superior to other existing indices and is implemented using Microsoft-Excel™. Several coals are used to demonstrate the implementation of the index proposed.IntroductionIn 1950, Mayer introduced a curve that carries the information embedded in the fir s t three curves or ash curves of the conventional washability tables and curves (Peng et al., 1979; Osborne, 1988). The curve was labeled the Mcurve (abbreviation for Mittlewertkurve in German or the Mayer- curve). The main idea behind the curve is to use the ordinate for the cumulative mass and the abscissa for the ash (attribute) mass. Specific slopes on the resulting curve represent the cumulative float, cumulative sink, and elementary ash (attribute) contents (Mayer, 1950, 1953, 1957; Venkatesan, 1975; Osborne, 1988; Salama, 1989). Beyond the ash values, the curve carries graphical information that can be used in evaluating coal processing characteristics. Consequently, it becomes possible to present several raw coals on a single diagram, thus making it easier to compare their processing characteristics. This is particularly useful in comparing various size ranges of raw coal or the same size range from different seams. Therefore, the M-curve is adopted as a vehicle for developing the “processing (washing) characteristics index” implemented in this paper."

"Autoclaves have been in commercial use in the mining industry since the early 1950's the initial applications included tin, uranium, cobalt, nickel and copper extraction under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These circuits varied in batch or continuous operation. The geometry has been spherical, vertical, and horizontal type with up to six agitators, with throughput as high as 1000 stpd.Presently autoclaves are a good process selection for many refractory sulphide gold bearing ores. The first application of pressure oxidation in the gold industry was at the Homestake Mcglaughlin's Mine which was commissioned in 1985. This was an acidic pressure oxidation process treating 3000 stpd in three four compartment horizontal autoclaves 14' diameter and 53' long. Since the initiation of autoclaves for the treatment of gold bearing sulphides, there are presently 16 gold autoclaves operating worldwide varying in size up to 18'4"" inside diameter. There are seven autoclaves for the treatment of refractory sulphide gold bearing ores to be commissioned in 1997 and 1998.Autoclave technology has progressed extensively since the mid-eighties. Operational experience has made rapid progress and the result is much smoother and safer autoclave operation. There have been many advances in autoclave technology design. For example, the use of exotic materials for corrosion resistance to reduce down time for maintenance. The instrumentation involved in autoclave operation is very sophisticated which allows for many safety features. The advanced design has allowed for greater availability and as a result operating costs and maintenance costs have decreased. These technological advancements have made autoclave technology more safe and this has resulted in a greater acceptance of this type of operation. Many of the gold autoclave facilities operate up to 9 months continuously without shutdowns. The advancement of autoclave technology has inspired many new applications.Because of the outstanding operation of autoclaves in the gold industry, many other applications for autoclave technology are being considered. Tooth-wear on mining shovels requires continuous monitoring. Worn teeth impede excavation performance, increase energy usage, and increase the risk of lost or broken teeth and adapters. A machine-vision-based automated tooth-wear monitoring system is presented. The system employs a rugged boom or stick-mounted camera to capture images of the shovel teeth. An onboard computer processes the images in real-time to determine the length of each tooth. The current wear state is available via a network-accessible log for on-demand status updates. By continuously recording tooth length changes over time, the logs can be used to estimate wear rates and patterns, permitting comparisons between different G.E.T. configurations, operator behaviour patterns, or material types. This detailed, quantitative data permits site-specific optimizations to wear packages and maintenance scheduling. Automating wear monitoring offers the crucial wear information necessary to minimize maintenance costs and reduce unscheduled downtime. A 37-day field trial in a copper-gold mine demonstrated the ability of the system to measure tooth lengths, compute wear rates, and detect differences in tooth wear based on their position on the bucket.

During ore body modeling normally additional samples are required to improve resources evaluation and mining planning. At this stage one rises the question about where additional samples should be located. Regular sampling pattern seems to be a reasonable choice, since all the regions within the deposit receive the same number of samples without a clear clustering. Nevertheless, values for certain attributes (grades for instance) from a mineral deposits may behave more erratic in some regions than others. Consequently, by adding samples to these regions could bring more benefit for reducing the uncertainty related to a transfer function such as Net Present Value (NPV), instead of adding samples to location of low grade uncertainty. Thus, for a given number of additional data, the test of a regular pattern and a pattern which add samples on areas of high uncertainty of the attribute of interest is worth. This paper presents an algorithm that allows the construction of these two patterns, automatically, on a software commonly used in the mining industry. The algorithm leads to a fast analysis on the efficiency of the two patterns in reducing the uncertainty associated with a transfer function.

COAL MINING, with its some 15,000 employees, is directly responsible for the livelihood of one-fifth of the population of the Province of Nova Scotia and indirectly so for that of possibly another fifth. Deposits of coal are known and worked in four counties of the Province, from which is being produced yearly tonnages as noted below: Cumberland County 750,000 tons Piccou County 400,000 tons Inverness County 100,000 tons Cape Breton County 5,250,000 tons TOTAL FOR NOVA SCOTIA 6,500,000 tons Production in Cape Breton county is entirely from the one source, the Sydney coalfield, and not only is this field the most important in respect to output, as is disclosed above, but it is also the largest presently known deposit in the Province and holds the greatest tonnage yet in reserve for future mining. In the light of the above more or less generally known facts, it is trite to remark on the importance of the Sydney coalfield in the internal economy of the Province. On the other hand, not nearly as well-known nor as frankly recognized is its significance in the national life of Canada, for from this field is produced not only 80 per cent of the Nova Scotia coal but over 40 per cent of all coal mined in the Dominion. Another noteworthy comparison can be made from the fact that the Sydney field contributes 22 per cent of all the bituminous coal consumed in Canada, the remainder being made up of 7 per cent mined elsewhere in Nova Scotia, 27 per cent from other parts of Canada (British Columbia and Alberta, principally), while the remaining 44 per cent is imported, practically wholly, from the United States of America.

FOR forty years cyanide men have been intensively engaged on the treatment of sulpho-telluride ores. So far as we know, the processes used today were-with the important exception of the concentration plus high-lime process at the Victor mill (1915)-in use, or had been tried, in the earl y years of the century. Roasting, bromocyanide, ordinary cyanide, table and vanner concentration, floating and treating the concentrate, roasting con-centrates prior to treatment, etc., all were used at Kalgoorlie in 1904 or earlier. Flotation, followed by shipment of the concentrate to the Golden Cycle mill, was the practice at the Vindicator mine, Cripple Creek, for some years prior to 1917. Similar practice was employed in the Portland Independence mill at Victor, Colorado, and was lacer superseded by the table concentration, high-lime cyanide treatment of rails of the older Portland Victor mill. During all this time, an immense amount of research was being clone on these ores by the staffs of numberless companies. Conclusions were drawn and mills built. But if the results of one per cent of this research were ever published in sufficient detail for intelligent use by others, the Lake Shore staff has been unable to discover them, or does not recall having clone so. Government laboratories-as for instance chose of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, in or about 1927-have touched upon certain methods in their publications, but they simply have not had the time to finish the job. The paper by W. E. Johnston, Tellurides-Problem or Alibi? (E. & M.]., Aug., 1933), aroused wide interest and comment. It published conclusions, some right and some wrong, and gave the evidence adduced by the author i:n support thereof. Conclusions published without supporting evidence are to most of us worse than no conclusions at all. We suggest chat, if even one-tenth of the operators had published full, detailed results of their laboratory work, ad vance in the treatment of sulpho-telluride ores would have been very much accelerated. Therefore, we venture to inflict upon the Institute a compendium of the results of laboratory work performed during the past few years at the Lake Shore mill. It is really a summary of the more interesting results to date, prepared by the mill staff for their own use and benefit. But we hope chat the discussion under any heading is so detailed chat it will be intelligible to anyone interested in that phase of the subject.

"Since 1994, Aur Ressources has operated Louvicourt mine, a zinc and copper mine close to Val d’Or, at a rate of 4300 t/d. Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability.The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employees to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed. IntroductionThis article is the second of three on predictive maintenance at the Louvicourt mine operated by Aur Resources Inc. The first article, published in the October 2002 issue, was about vibration analysis for rotating machines. This article describes how lubrication and oil analysis for stationary machines permitted Louvicourt to save more than $150,000 within two years and presents the evolution of the oil analysis program.Louvicourt mine, located near Val-d’Or, Quebec, is a copper and zinc mining and milling operation that processes 4300 t/d of ore and employs 289 people. Production began in 1994. Louvicourt mine is a partnership between Aur Ressources (30%), Teck Corp. (25%), and Novicourt (45%)."

"Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd operate a zinc-copper mine with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of copper concentrates. Zinc concentrates arc shipped to a company owned smelter in Valleyfield (a distance of 690 miles), for Export to Quebec City and also to Josephtown, Pennsylvania (1,060 miles, Figure 1.)The protection of concentrates in open gondola rail shipments has been a matter of concern since operations commenced. Considerable financial losses did occur at times because of wind erosion. Operating difficulties were also encountered by customers because of excessive moisture accummulation in the concentrates. Test shipments made in 1969 established the magnitude of losses in open cars. The results and subsequent investigations at our mines and elsewhere confirmed that load protection is an economic necessity.Many types of covers were experimented with, more or less successfully. In 1972 we agreed on a joint program with Dupont of Canada Limited. A new type of cover was developed by early 1973. It has been in use since, undergoing several improvements as experience accumulates."
