Modern, high-output, continuous process plant requires heavy capital expenditure and is exroected to achieve a high rate of return upon the investment made, thus its high utilisation is an economic necessity. Downtime is extremely expensive not only in terms of idle capital but also in terms of lost production and revenue. A sound maintenance management system can alleviate the problem of unscheduled stoppages and a key document in the maintenance system is the Work Order because it both initiates work and conveys maintenance control information back to the administrator. This key document must be supported by an information base that provides technical data, job procedures, spare parts, history and costing. To be effective this information must be easily and immediately available to all concerned. Computer technology has developed extremely rapidly over the last ten years and with it a wide variety of on-line computerised maintenance systems. Selection of the most appropriate system for a given industrial plant is not a straight-forward process. Computer requirements for hardware and software must be matched to the requirements of the maintenance system and such matching must be carried out in an ordered and rational way. At Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, time was taken to review the existing maintenance system, select, study and test the new computerised maintenance management package and plan its implementation. As a result, the initial target of equipment recognition has been achieved on schedule and within budget.

'Nothing happens until something is sold' This statement is not original - it is a necessary orientation for marketing industrial minerals. The most important single philosophy of marketing is that it recognises the consumer as the starting point. Production orientation is concerned with producing products that the customer might buy. Market orientation is concerned with finding the needs of the customer and how they can be satisfied. The difference between the two approaches can be recognised in company structures but the most tangible difference is in the approach by a company to selling and development. In other words, it is the market that decides what can be done with a mineral. The markets requirements dictate what mineral, what grade and what price will be paid. Therefore it follows that when pricing a product we should avoid taking the basic cost and arriving at a final selling price through a series of standard markups (unless government insists on it). We should start with the price the market can stand and work backwards to find out whether you have a profitable product or one that will fail because it is too dear. Naturally a thorough understanding of production costs is necessary particularly when marginal markets are concerned.

Many metallurgical operations produce fine residues and dusts as by-products which can be difficult to handle and offer little direct financial incentive to treat. There is a growing imperative to deal with these materials particularly since land fill is fast becoming an uncertain long term solution. One possible means of treatment is to extract the valuable metals while fusing the remainder into a slag. In this way valuable metal components of the material can be recovered and the less valuable components be converted into useful products, eg cements and inorganic polymers which have a high environmental stability and a growing market. The aim of this project is to establish solids injection and fusion in a slag bath as a viable method of treating industrial wastes and residues. The benefits of this approach are expected to be: the ability to treat a wide range of organic and inorganic residue materials, ease of recovery of volatile and valuable elements and the production of final materials which could be used in other industries. In ongoing experimental work at the CSIRO Minerals a 250 kg slag bath reactor has been used to test the injection of Paragoethite residue into an iron silicate based slag. An experimental apparatus has been designed and commissioned to pneumatically inject solid material at feed rates of up to 80 kg/hour. The capture efficiency of injected solids by the slag bath was calculated by monitoring the composition of the slag. Using this method of treatment, the zinc contained in the residue can be recovered as a fume by varying the oxidation state of the slag. Other valuable elements could be recovered by creating a matte or metal phase in the reactor with the final material being used in the production of cement. A capture efficiency of injected solid paragoethite particles in the slag bath of up to 97 per cent was achieved. Under the conditions of the experimental work capture efficiency was found to be independent of injection velocity and slag depth. The rate of fuming during injection was found to increase slightly with injection velocity and was independent of slag depth.

Magnesium International Limited (MIL) has broken new ground in their desire to integrate their mineral development activities in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in to the communities of the region, despite there being no statutory requirement to do so. In their efforts to define a magnesite resource adjacent to the proposed site for a magnesium metal processing facility, MIL opened their exploration program up for public consultation. In conjunction with the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (PPRDB), a community group was formed to review the impact of exploration and mining on the ecologically sensitive Southern Flinders region. This voluntary move towards full community consultation for mineral exploration was a first in South Australia and probably in Australia. The Community Focus Group (CFG) worked closely with MIL, Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) in the development of an exploration program and Declaration of Environmental Factors (DEF) acceptable to all stakeholders. Collaboratively, the community concerns were discussed and addressed, with the community gaining a very comprehensive understanding of the exploration process and possible future mine development. A balance of social, environmental and economic factors was developed that was accepted by all parties and encapsulated in the final DEF for approval by the regulatory authority. The consultation process was a new experience for all of the stakeholders, each of them effectively exploring new ground in addressing information dissemination, risk management and the social versus economic equation. MIL developed not only a viable and acceptable exploration program but also substantially reinforced its position as a responsible corporate citizen with the Southern Flinders communities.

Blasting represents one of the most relevant unit operations in the process of mineral extraction. The final objective of this operation is that of obtaining an adequate final fragment size distribution such that the combined costs of drilling, blasting, excavation and transport, and crushing/grinding, are minimised, while at the same time producing the minimum possible level of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The strong influence that drilling and blasting has over the subsequent processes involved in the operational cycle makes it imminently desirable to have access to experience and technology which make possible the evaluation and optimisation of this unit operation. The correct use of vibration monitoring techniques offers a number of benefits in terms of their ability to examine any blasting process in detail. In effect, the measurement of particle velocity levels that result from the detonation of each explosive charge offers a means by which it is possible to measure relative efficiency of each charge, interactions (productive and counterproductive) between adjacent charges, and a definitive indication of general performance of any given blast design and its implementation. In this way the monitoring of blast vibrations in rock due to the blast event, can be used as a diagnostic tool, given that the correct interpretation of the vibration traces allows the determination of the level of interaction between the design and operational variables of the blast event. This makes it possible to evaluate, for example, the presence of out of sequence detonations, statistical scatter in the detonation times of pyrotechnic delay detonators, deficient detonation of charges, instantaneous detonation of charges and sympathetic detonation of charges, as well as the general of vibration levels in terms of peak particle velocity, acceleration, and displacement. Another important use of such data is in the construction of a database relating vibration levels to charge weight, hole diameter, and distance, for any given rock type, enables the calibration of predictive vibration models which in turn make it possible to predict the damaging effects of blasting. Knowledge of both the vibration levels induced, combined with quantitative measures of the geomechanical competence of a rock mass make it possible to estimate the probability of producing blast induced damage. The high levels of vibration generated by some blast events may damage the rock mass, producing new fractures or extending and dilating existing fractures. The vibration in this context may be considered as a dynamic stress provoking strain in the rock mass. This paper describes the application of the vibration monitoring technique, particularly in the underground mining environment, and its importance in diagnosis, modelling, control, and optimisation of the development blasting process. The potential of the technique is assessed in the context of achieving substantial techno-economic improvements development blasting results, increasing output whilst minimising the operational costs of the mining process.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. Investigations into the flotation behaviour of single minerals, mineral mixtures and ores at the CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering have led to the development of sophisticated laboratory flotation testing equipment. Both routine and complicated flotation investigations can be conducted in a precise and reproducible manner using procedures and equipment that have been refined over many years of conducting careful batch flotation testwork. Several important advances in flotation research can be attributed to changes in testing procedure developed as a consequence of the availability of this equipment. The flotation cell and ancillary equipment is described and associated developments and techniques discussed.

A pilot plant evaluation of the Savmin process, for the purification of mine water was commissioned by Anglogold and conducted at the Stilfontein Gold Mine, Margaret Shaft at Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa. The purpose of the project was to obtain the operating conditions and operating costs, to produce different qualities of product water, as well as design parameters for upscaling to an industrial plant. As Coal Mining Areas develop, problems relating to strata control increase. The "easy" coal has been extracted and the future development lies in the direction of greater depths of cover and more difficult strata conditions. To provide solutions to the problems encountered the techniques of constructing and testing physical models have been developed and refined. With a sound knowledge of model theory allied to practical experience, mining research engineers use physical cemented material models to examine, assess and solve mining problems relateu to strata behaviour and environment. For a model to provide the answer to a particular mining problem it is essential that as much information as possible be obtained from the mine or area of a mine which the model is to represent. Details relating to the strata, geological malformations, and the stress environment must be collected and collated to ensure reliable results.

Mineralogical information obtained from plant surveys is subject to errors, both due to sampling and experiment. To reduce these errors, and to ensure that information is consistent, a data reconciliation model has been developed for mineralogical data. Its capability includes mass balancing size data, total assays, assays within size-classes and liberation data. Unlike any other mass balance package, this package also allows reconciliation of the complex mineralogical information. For example, particles cannot simply be treated as binary, but consist of combinations of many minerals. Hence the distribution of mineralogical information is multidimensional and the mineralogical distributions are referred to as multiphase. In this paper, the different levels of mass balancing are explained, including how to mass balance liberation data. Furthermore a new technique based on probability theory can be used to infer distributions even when there is insufficient information to perform a mass balance, and this technique is also explained. Results for various stages are given.

Technical Audits offset some uncertainties introduced by the combination of longer development periods for, projects and the highly dynamic world economic scene. This paper reviews the place, nature and process of the technical audit by examining the circumstances when it might be needed, the typical scope of work or brief, the responsibilities of and relationship between the auditor and the client, and the auditing procedure. Detailed aspects of technical audits are discussed followed by a case study of the Hail Creek Coal Project Audit.

Both blast furnace and steel furnace slags have been used extensively and successfully on main line railroads in the United States for more than 25 years. Annually, these slags are being used as ballast at the rate of about 4 million tonnes of blast furnace slag and 1 mil- lion tonnes of steel furnace slag, much of it on main line with 90 metric tonne car loadings. More steel furnace slag would be used if it was available. Both slags meet all the specification limits of the American Railway Engineering Association. Actual use on high density rail- roads has confirmed the long range economics of their use. Comparison of laboratory tests, such as Los Angeles abrasion, with actual field per- formance has shown conclusively that commonly used laboratory tests can not be used to accu- rately compare the quality of various types of ballast materials.

The cement industry requires large quan- tities of limestone, its main raw material. It is the major consumer of this mineral. Limestone is widely distributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport considerations render most deposits of no economic value. Of those which are sufficiently close to the major me- tropolitan markets many are rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major development, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. Detailed geological investigations are necessary, not only to prove raw material sources prior to establishment of a cement works but also to permit planned extraction programmes and satisfactory grade control during subsequent development. Conventional field techniques have generally proved adequate for raw material exploration. Data assessment and reserves estimation also are by conventional methods although the specific requirements of the industry relating to raw material and cement quality, the type of manufacturing process and fuel used are relevant. Experimental data on the production of fines as a function of specific grinding energy consumption show that in general the energy utilisation in a choke fed high-pressure roll mill is higher than in a ball mill, but lower than in the single-particle mode of comminution under slow compressive loading. There is some evidence to suggest that the presence of water in feeds improves the energy efficiency of pressurised roll milling somewhat. Within a wide range of energy input, the size distributions of the ground product are self-similar, the logarithmic median size decreases linearly with the amount of fines produced and the inverse of the median size increases linearly with the energy spent. The production of fines as a function of energy expended follows essentially the same pattern as the one frequently encountered in media mills. The kinetics of grinding in the high-pressure roll mill can be simulated satisfactorily by modifying the standard particle population balance equation in order to account for energy dissipation in the tightly compressed bed. Common characteristics and important differences in grinding by the media mill and the high-pressure roll mill are highlighted.

The accurate determination of trace level gold in ores, metallurgical samples and process solutions is required because of the value of gold, the efficiency of the cyanide leach process and because of the high gold recovery from these cyanide solutions. It is thus necessary to routinely analyse geological and metallurgical samples with gold concentrations of 3 g tonne (ug g- 1ppm) and process solutions with a gold concentration of 0.01 mgL 1 (ppm) preferably with sufficient accuracy to quote at least two significant figures. Several techniques have been reviewed for their suitability for the routine gold analysis of these samples which also contain signif- icant concentrations of other ions. The classic fire assay technique has achieved the respect and confidence of mining personnel because of the results achieved by very experienced assayers. Other extraction and concentration techniques have now been shown to be equally effective. The use of instrumental analytical techniques particularly atomic absorption spectrometry have shown that cheaper procedures, which are as reliable, are now available to gold producers for the routine analysis required to maintain an efficient gold recovery process.

Trucks are the primary means of bulk material transport in Open Pit hard rock mines worldwide. They are considered to be the most- flexible system available. The large number of trucks used in some mines provides flexibility. Spare units allow for the reduced availability of the single units. Trucks have however very poor energy efficiency. Only 40% of the consumed energy is for transport of the payload, the remaining energy is required to move the dead load of the trucks. With the increase in cost, pressure, mine operators are now looking for alternative methods to make their operation more economical. Energy conservation and increasing haulage distances and uphill haulage are major factors in many well established operations. New methods have already proven themselves as more economical alternatives. Belt conveyors are an alternative means of transport with much higher energy efficiency. They use up to 80% of the consumed energy for transportation of the payload. Energy costs for conveyors are 30% of the energy costs for trucks on level transport and as little as 15% for elevating payloads. Belt conveyors require much fear spare parts and wear components than trucks. A factor of one to two times applies for level transport and ten to twenty times for uphill transport.

Ore sorting has long been used to raise the efficiency and thus lower the environmental impact of mineral processing operations. It was first instituted as hand sorting, according to a humanly perceived difference in the ore, but is now automated using large mechanical sorters in order to meet the high tonnage throughput required in most minerals processing applications. In the past, ore sorting was generally used as a niche processing route when other approaches failed, and in this context, consequential environmental benefits are often not the first consideration in adopting sorting. When applicable, ore sorting offers environmental benefits in reductions in fines waste, reagent usage and energy consumption in milling. Although there are significant opportunities for the use of ore sorting technology in many minerals processing operations, industry applications, to date, have been limited mainly to the processing of diamonds, magnesite, talc and uranium ores. This limitation has principally been due to a lack of suitable sensing technologies for a wide range of ore types. The authors report on a wide-ranging review of the automated sorting of mineral ores, and in particular, on methods for discrimination of ore characteristics prior to mechanical sorting.

Spatial modelling has been used to determine potential locations of granite-related nickel skarn mineralisation throughout eastern Australia. It is believed that during granite intrusion, fluid can leach nickel from nearby mafic lithologies and combine with sulfur to form nickel sulfides. Currently exploration for this style of deposit has been limited to the region around the Avebury Deposit in western Tasmania. As the lithologies near Avebury are not unique it is feasible that similar deposits could exist elsewhere in Australia. The weights of evidence spatial data modelling technique was used to evaluate the wealth of geological data available over eastern Australia and included known economic deposits as training data to weight the themes of the model. These weighted themes were combined to create a prospectivity map showing areas favourable for granite-related nickel deposits. Several regions were identified by the model to have good potential to host nickel mineralisation similar to the Avebury deposit. These include areas located throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, the Tasman District of New Zealand and, in particular, the Rockhampton region of eastern Queensland.
