Most mines in the Bundamba, North Ipswich, and Rosewood districts of the West Moreton coalfield of south eastern Queensland have installed washing plants during the last five years. Many problems were encountered in their installation, including the small size of washing plant required in many cases, the economical minimum ash content under present and future market requirements, production from a one-product washbox of large and small coal of quality to satisfy both markets, measures to avoid adding unnecessary moisture to the washed slack coals, and excessive middlings in some coals or soft clay in others.INTRODUCTIONIt was fortunate for Brisbane, which was to become the capital of a new State, Queensland, in 1859, and grow into a city of over half a million people by the time of its centenary, that coal was found in abundance almost on its doorstep near Ipswich, the first mine being opened at Redbank in 1843. This was followed by the opening of many more mines in that district and, some 40 years later, in the nearby Rosewood district where high-volatile gas coal was produced (Fig. 1). These discoveries ensured a supply of reasonably priced coal (currently about 85/- per ton delivered) in Brisbane, but the quality is inferior to that of other coals mined in Queensland beyond economic range of Brisbane.Various factors led to an increase in the average ash content of the West Moreton coals during and after the war. Between 1940 and 1952 the gasworks coals rose in average ash from 13 8 per cent to 23·9 per cent and the powerhouse coals from 17·1 per cent to 27·1 per cent. This drift was arrested by the installation of 28 screening and picking plants from 1952 onward, but it became obvious that mechanical cleaning of the coals was essential due to the competitive market for coal and the worsening quality of reserves.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. It should be noted that spectrometers determine both the elemental silicon and that present as silicon dioxide in occluded slag and inclusions.The silicon content of iron and steel is determined in this laboratory by spectrophotometric measurement of a "molybdenum blue" colour. Isotopes and hydrochemistry were used to define groundwater flow systems and better understand the hydrogeological setting of the Karijini National Park, which is in the Central Pilbara region adjacent to the Marandoo iron ore mine. Based on the stable isotope composition of the water samples, the data can be divided into two main groups. Groundwater is characterised by depleted dD and d18O, suggesting no significant evaporation effect. Surface water on the other hand is more enriched in dD and d18O due to evaporation. The relatively high concentration of Cl- compared to rainfall and depleted dD and d18O values of groundwater indicate that recharge of the aquifers is occurring during intense rainfall events when rapid infiltration occurs. Evapotranspiration then acts to concentrate ionic species prior to recharge. Relationships between the major ion concentration and catchment area, surficial Tertiary cover and distance between recharge and discharge were identified. The results show that these catchment variables combine to determine unique water chemistry for each sub catchment in Karijini National Park. The TDS concentration of the groundwater in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation that hosts the Marandoo ore body is higher than most of the water bodies surrounding the mining area suggesting significant modification or different recharge mechanisms to that of the Karijini groundwater.

AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.

This paper supplements a keynote address prepared for the MassMin 2016 conference on mass underground mining methods, including block, panel, inclined and sublevel caving. It advocates for a new cave mining paradigm that takes advantage of a number of new and disruptive technologies or innovations that have evolved over the last 15 years, some of which were initiated by major mining companies such as Codelco. The paper will address the challenges that the industry will be facing in the future as well as possible solutions. As background, the paper summarises the challenges that the industry has faced in the past and how such challenges were addressed. The author acknowledges that given his more than 30 years of experience with Codelco Chile (operations and corporate), aspects of his intelligent mining concept have no doubt been influenced and have matured during his invaluable time with Codelco also as the Head of Technology and Innovation. The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.

Updraft sintering of lead concentrates was introduced at Port Pirie in 1955 and since that time a considerable amount of investigational work has been carried out in the laboratory and on the plant with the objective of improving both the understanding of the process and its practical application.From this work it is now possible to predict trends in design and operation, which should result in capital savings and increased efficiency of future updraught plants.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 70 years a remarkable advance has been made in the method of preparing lead concentrates for smelting in the Port Pide blast furnaces of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.). Beginning in 1889 with heap roasting, the process progressed to Ropp roasters and Huntington-Heberlein pots in various combinations, then to multiple small Dwight Lloyd (D.L.) downdraught machines. In 1940 two large 10 ft by 50 ft D.L. downdraught machines were installed, and finally in 1955 updraught sintering was ,introduced with the installation of the present 10 ft by 99 ft sinter machine.At the time this last machine was built it was the first unit of its type and thus, of necessity, an experimental machine. During the eight years it has been operating a considerable amount of investigational work on sintering has been carried out both on the plant and in the laboratory.It is now felt that sufficient information is on hand to predict at least tentatively, some of the future developments in lead sintering, whereby both the quality of the sinter and the rate of production may be improved. This will result in a considerable reduction in smelting costs.

The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anorthosite layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spineI-bearingmeta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, and Ni liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

Pilot Plant confirmatory testing of the treatment route developed in the Metallurgical Laboratory is an essential factor in the development of complex ore bodies. Objectives should be well defined to permit the efficient planning and cost effective operation of the pilot plant project. The primary objective for the pilot plant should be to confirm the viability of the developed flowsheet on a continuous basis, examining only major variables such as ore types, quantum changes in grind, comparison between bulk and sequential flotation circuits, use of flotation columns, evaluation of autogenous grinding and production of samples of concentrates for market evaluation. Secondary objectives may include the collection of engineering design data and the production of a comprehensive report to Bankable Document standards to provide technical support for capital financing. The complexity of the ore body and the scale of the final operating project together with the pilot plant objectives will determine the extent of the pilot plant operations. The level of expenditure associated with a pilot plant can vary, in total cost and as a percentage of the total development capital investment required to take the prospect from exploration to a producing mine. Factors contributing to expenditure are discussed. Associated with cost considerations is the level of confidence mining company investors can have that their capital investment will return dividends.

The method of investigation was to study the distribution of ore in great detail, to make a thorough structural study of the lode and the mine area, and then to compare the results of the two studies. Such a comparison usually reveals a very close relationship between geological structure and ore distribution, and can often lead to important conclusions which would not be reached in the ordinary working of a mine.The Triton mine lies 30 miles E.N.E. of Cue, or 380 miles N.W. of Kalgoorlie, in typical pre-Cambrian rocks, consisting of gTeenstone lavas and tuft's, interbedded with slates and some sediments, and intruded by granite and porphyry. Fig. 1 (at end of paper) is a longitudinal section of the mine and shows that the workings consist of the main North Emu and the smaller South Emu, separated by a distance of about 1 of a mile. Both orebodies occur on the same lode, which strikes north and south and dips practically vertically. On the same line, and of 1/2 a mile and a mile respectively to the north of the North Emu, are the small Rand and North Rand workings, where a big width of lode material has proved to be very low grade. In the North Emu the lode width averages 12 to 15 feet; it is seldom less than 5 feet and in places reaches 30 feet. In the South Emu the lode is wide, but only portion of it is payable.The lode is a mineralised bed occurring between massive lava flows on the east and a mixed series of tuft's and thin lava flows on the west. The lode material is hard, fine grained, and dark coloured, and generally has a faint banding which is believed to indicate a tuft'aceous origin of the original lode rock. Microscopic examination shows that the original lode rock has undergone considerable albitisation;' there has also been considerable formation of biotite which gives the lode material a characteristic sheen. The mineralisation consists of abundant fine pyrite, which is auriferous, and a lesser development of pyrrhotite which is, however, barren of gold.THE OREBODIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICSThe distribution of ore is best studied from gold contours, as these reveal features that cannot be detected in an ordinary assay section. Gold contours (see Fig. 3) are developed' by plotting the width and grade of all development and stoping assays throughout the mine on a longitudinal projection, representing each sample by a coloured dot according to a suitably chosen range of assay values, and then outlining areas of similarly coloured dots (see H. J. C. Conolly, Econ. Geol., April, 1936). Both width and grade must be taken into account and the simplest method of gold contouring is to use dwt.lft. values, but difficulties arise here with big widths of low grade and small widths of high grade ore. To choose an extreme case, 30 ft. of 2 dwts. and 2 ft. of 30 dwts. both equal 60 dwts.lft., and would therefore be given the same value in dwt.lft. contouring...

Since its enactment in 1991, the Resource Management Act (RMA) has generated both praise and criticism. The major criticism is in relation to the costs the Act poses to industry and the time it takes to work through the process. In response to such criticisms the Minister for the Environment has initiated a review of the implementation of the RMA. The Minister's proposals for reform have not yet been released and the discussion that follows is based upon the report by the Minister's Review Group which was released in September.
