The banded iron formations "jasper bars," jaspilites, banded hematite quartzites or banded ironstones, etc., as they have. variously been termed in Western Australia, constitute one of the most striking features of the Pre-Cambrian in this State. They occur in at least two distinct divisions of the Pre-Cambrian, viz., in horizons interbedded with quartzites, shales and thin bedded dolomite in the N~llagine (Proterozoic) Series; and amongst the Older Pre-Cambrian rocks, associated with the metamorphosed sediments of the Jimperding-Chittering Series, the Yilgarn Whitestone Series and the Mosquito Creek Series, and interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments of the Older prenstone or Kalgoorlie Series.In the Hamersley Ranges in the north-west of Western Australia banded ferroginous cherts are well developed amongst the horizontal sediments of Nullagine Age. These iron formations have recently sprung into prominence as they have been found to form the host rocks for important deposits of· blue asbestos. They are closely comparable with the unique crocidolite-bearing banded ironstones of the Cape Province, South Africa, and have been described elsewhere in some detail by the writer. (1) t .The banded iron formations with which it is intended to deal principally in the following pages, form most abundantly in the Central and Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where they form portions of the Older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie Series of auriferous rocks. In these regions their chemical inertness and physical hardness provide considerable resistance to the agents of erosion and consequently they frequently stand out in strong topographic relief in otherwise monotonously flat or gently rolling country. These banded-iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and in other portions of the State because of thei!! associations with 'gold, iron -and to' a lesser extent, manganese; whilst indirectly because of their peculiar nature, form and topographic prominence, etc, they have been of tremendous assistance to the field geologist both in the practical application of methods of geological mapping and in the' elucidation of geological structures. Finally, they have recently acquired a new importance in the specialised search for ore-bearing lodes or for structural information over areas of soil-covered country, as their form and composition make them ideal subjects for the use of either electrical or m!1-gnetic methods of geophysical prospecting.

The decrease in quality of Australian iron ore, coupled with the demand for more efficient energy use, necessitates closer monitoring and optimisation of process conditions for iron ore sinter production. Sinter properties are correlated with the mineralogical content and traditionally, quality control has relied on methods such as Fe2+ determination, point counting via optical microscopy and automated electron beam techniques such as QEMSCAN; these can have a typical turnaround time of several days between sampling and reporting of results. As well, there is additional uncertainty around quantifying some of the complex mineralogical phases in sinter such as silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I, which are key phases influencing sinter quality. There is a clear need for the implementation of alternative analytical methodologies that offer a turnaround in hours or even minutes to provide information to accurately maintain production conditions.X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a technique widely used for the quantitative mineralogical phase analysis (QPA) of ores and processed materials in the iron ore industry. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis methods have recently been suggested as an indicator of sinter Fe2+ content from powder XRD data without the need for rigorous and often time-consuming mineralogical analysis by the operator. In this study we provide results from the implementation of PLSR to predict the strength of iron ore sinter. Results are sourced from a well-constrained data set comprising strength properties (as quantified by a tumble index (TI)) from a series of compact laboratory test samples. The Ladolam deposit lies within the altered volcanic rocks of the caldera floor, part of which now forms Luise Harbour. It was discovered in 1982 in the course of a reconnaissance drainage sediment sampling programme. This was designed to follow up indications of surface hydrothermal activity noted by Government geologists during an earlier survey of the Tabar-Feni island chain. Diamond drilling began in September 1983 and by the end of 1989 a payable and proved mineable reserve containing 19 million ounces of gold had been established. Rock types and structures are masked at the surface by intense alteration and weathering. An extensive drilling programme has enabled the identification of these features and the relationships between them necessary for an understanding of the factors controlling gold mineralisation. It has also led to the recognition of two distinct phases of alteration. The first phase of porphyry-style potassic alteration was followed by violent caldera formation, producing extensive brecciation and veining. The second alteration phase partly over- printed the first phase and was an epithermal one, evidenced by argillic, advanced argillic and phyllic assemblages. During this event, a large volume of fluids circulated under the favourable structural conditions; these fluids included a sulphur- rich, neutral chloride brine believed to have transported the gold. Boiling and mixing of circulating fluids in the open breccias is thought to have resulted in deposition of the gold. There is evidence that this process is continuing at the present day.

The copper and zinc contents of herbarium specimens of 11 of the 12 Australian species of Polycarpaea were determined in order to establish background and anomalous values of potential use in biogeochemical prospecting.Cumulative frequency curves were used to establish appropriate threshold concentrations for six species including the "copper plant"' P spirostylis. Collection localities of Polycarpaea specimens with anomalous copper or copper-and-zinc values are under investigation.

The oxidation of ferrous sulphate to ferric sulphate with air and oxygen in a gas lift percolator was investigated with initial Fe2+ concentrations in the range 0·01 M to 1·0 M,temperatures in the range 20-80°C, and pH in the range oto 2.The rate of formation of Fe3+ was found to be well described by the rate expressionEquation 1and a consistent mechanism is proposed.The presence of Cu2+ was found to cause an increased rate of oxidation, the effect being greater with Cu2+ concentrations increasing in the range 0·001 M - 0·01 M in 0·2 M Fe2+. The effect of other solutes containing Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, Hg, Cl, Mo, NH4, As, Cr, or Na at a concentration of 0·001 M in 0·2 M Fe2+ was negligible.

The Rosebery and Hercules mines, situated in the Rosebery-Williamsford district in western Tasmania, have a history of production dating back to 1896-7, although full scale production did not commence until 1936, following the development of a satisfactory process of selective flotation (Hall, Cottle, Rosenhain and McGhie, 1953). The mineral composition of the Rosebery zinc-lead ores was first described in detail by Stillwell (1934). The Hercules ore is generally similar, but as yet no descriptions of it have beenpublished.Since Dr. Stillwell's paper appeared, the management of the Rosebery and Hercules mines has from time to time submitted a number of interesting mineral specimens to C.S.I.R.O. Mineragraphie Investigations. Examination of these specimens brought to light eight minerals, some relatively uncommon, not previously recognized in these ores.They are cassiterite, molybdenite, stannite, electrum, meneghinite, boulangerite, pyrargyrite and pyrrhotite. Some of the specimens are also rich in tetrahedrite and gold. In addition each of the other ore minerals described by Stillwell, viz. pyrite, sphalerite, galena, bournonite, chaleopyrite and arsenopyrite, was detected in one or more of the specimens examined during the present study. The principal gangue minerals were found to be quartz, manganiferous carbonate, sericite and barite, agreeing closely with the observations of Stillwell.The present study was based on the examination of the following eight specimens.

Laboratory and field work on the use of wetting agents for suppression of colliery dust is described. Although the results were inconclusive they were not discouraging and further investigation is required. The use of certain wetting agents may constitute a healthhazard.INTRODUCTIONCoal dust presents explosion and health hazards to the coal mining industry. The problem of dust suppression is particularly acute where water alone is unsatisfactory for this purpose. The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

The theme of this paper is the development of-the project feasibility study which includes discussion of the work which is carried out in preparing the project feasibility study, the necessary evaluations and structures that are employed to ensure that not only does the feasibility study itself stand up to scrutiny and is sound, but also that the investment the company is proposing to develop, "the project", is an investment decision which will represent good returns to the company. This theme is particularly relevant when there are competing divisions within the company and only limited cash resources are available to make the correct investment decision. Thus various potential investments may be evaluated against each other to determine which project will be given the go ahead for development. This paper will particularly focus on the various investment analysis techniques that are used and discuss the work that is required in preparing the project feasibility study and specifically the interaction of the project team members and the thought process that must be undertaken to complete the project feasibility study. Finally comments will be made on tax planning issues particularly with respect to taxation of gold production to be introduced in January 1991. Some ideas are presented which may help and possibly improve the financial position of the projects being reviewed. Further, it is suggested that the thought process which goes with the financial engineering aspects of a resource project can be widened to take account of taxation issues and tax planning to ensure the rise of the project feasibility and hence the decision to proceed to development by the project sponsors.

The structure of a comprehensive research project into mine fires study applying the Ventgraph mine fire simulation software, preplanning of escape scenarios and general interaction with rescue responses is outlined. The project has Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding and also relies on substantial mining company site support. This practical input from mine operators is essential and allows the approach to be introduced in the most creditable way. The effort is built around the introduction of fire simulation computer software to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Application of the simulation software package to the changing mine layouts requires experience to achieve realistic outcomes. Most Australian mines of size currently use a ventilation network simulation program. Under the project a small subroutine has been written to transfer the input data from the existing mine ventilation network simulation program to æVentgraphÆ. This has been tested successfully. To understand fire simulation behaviour on the mine ventilation system, it is necessary to understood the possible effects of mine fires on various mine ventilation systems correctly first. Case studies demonstrating the possible effects of fires on some typical Australian coal mine ventilation circuits have been examined. The situation in which there is some gas make at the face and effects with fire have also been developed to emphasise how unstable and dangerous situations may arise. The primary objective of the part of the study described in this paper is to use mine fire simulation software to gain better understanding of how spontaneous combustion initiated fires can interact with the complex ventilation behaviour underground during a substantial fire. It focuses on the simulation of spontaneous combustion sourced heatings that develop into open fires. Further, it examines ventilation behaviour effects of spontaneous combustion initiated pillar fires and examines the difficulties these can be present if a ventilation reversal occurs. It also briefly examines simulation of use of the inertisation to assist in mine recovery. Mine fires are recognised across the world as a major hazard issue. New approaches allowing improvement in understanding their consequences have been developed as an aid in handling this complex area.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

Development of aggregate resources for use in structural concrete has been encouraged in Japan to support infrastructure improvement and national land conservation. Natural aggregate is a valuable resource necessary for sound economic development, and its importance is growing. After completion of aggregate mining projects, planting and afforestation are implemented. But sandy soil in excavation sites is not optimum for the growth of vegetation, and many years are needed before forests are restored. Planting techniques should be improved to support efficient reforestation in a shorter period of time. For this purpose, problems hampering growth of vegetation must to be solved through application of physical and physicochemical techniques to ensure that the environment and the ecosystem will be conserved in project sites.

Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. A general outline of the significant features in the quality and manufacture of the more common refractories is given. Where possible, linkage between quality development and control and service applicationhas been shown and explained. INTRODUCTIONThe refractory industry is no stranger to change. New processes and revision of old processes in other industries are the harbinger of new and revised products in refractories.Few of the changes are dramatic; generally they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. New developments are additional to, and inclusive of, established practice.Therefore in this paper it is necessary to repeat much of what is already known in order to show the development taking place.FIRECLAY REFRACTORIESGeneral technology Fireclay refractories are the most common, the most varied and the most versatile of all refractories. Virtually any composition of silica and alumina up to the composition of kaolin is possible. For purposes of comparison they may be classified in the Continental fashion in accordance with chemical composition or in the American way according to "duty". That the two methods are equivalent is shown by an inspection of the alumina-silica diagram of Bbwen and Greig (1924). 'Fireclay refractories are composed of a glassy and a crystalline component derived from the chemical and physical nature of the raw materials used in their manufacture.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

Used in conjunction with geology and geophysics, geochemistry provides powerful exploration tools of special relevance to Australian environments. New methods are needed that will confront the forthcoming emphasis on locating concealed orebodies. Deep weathering is conducive to techniques using groundwaters or gaseous emanations as sample media. Increasing use is anticipated for isotope measurements and for recognition of country rock characteristics that denote proximity to mineralization. Improvements in the sensitivity, reliability and portability of analytical instruments will underpin the contributions of geochemical methods to future mineral exploration.

Mineral sands dry plants consist of a large number of repetitive unit operations with significant transport delays, in the form of stream pipes, conveyors and elevators. As part of the P255 mineral sands sponsorship and using the JKMRC developed conductor/non-conductor (CNC) gauges, control loops have been implemented at the multi-duty dry plant of Cable Sands Limited at Bunbury. This paper describes the loops for kV control on a rougher high tension roll machines (HTR). The options available are product grade control and ratio control using the JKMRC CNC gauges, which measure the percent conductors in a stream. The purpose of control is to stabilise the circuit operation against disturbances such as atmospheric and feed disturbances.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Despite this, the system has been of immense service in mining wide lodes, but for all that, it can only be pronounced a makeshift.This is no reflection on Deidesheimer, the famous originator of the square set, for, as will be shown later on, this way of...
