McKinnons open pit gold mine, located within the Cobar Basin in New South Wales, is characterised by complex mineralisation controlled by the intersection of steep faults in the hinge zone of an anticline. Resource estimation using indicator variography and indicator kriging was based on RC drilling on 25 in sections together with grade control RC drilling on 12 in by 12 in and 6 m by 6 in patterns. Rigorous sampling and checking procedures were used to verify the reliability of the drill hole data. Blast hole data was used to assist grade control in defining ore block boundaries.

Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.

Sampling protocols and metallurgical flow sheets should be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. In support, the a priori need for evaluation programs is the characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical processes employed. Within the coarse- to-fi ne gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated particles, through to difficult for coarse gold mineralisation. Conversely, metallurgical processing may be relatively simple for coarse gold ore and more difficult for very fi ne gold ores. Most deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The nature of mineralisation, mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by preliminary sampling to facilitate testing. Mineralogical studies, focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required as part of wider paragenetic and geometallurgical investigations. This paper discusses key issues and presents a methodology for the determination of gold particle size in coarse gravity-gold ores to support sampling optimisation and which also contributes to metallurgical characterisation.

Confirmation that acid drainage (AD) was a significant environmental issue for the Australian minerals industry came in 1992 with the first national workshop on the topic. Subsequently the extent of AD was documented in a national survey published in 1997. The recommendations arising out of that survey served as a platform for actions by government, industry and industry-support organisations such as the Australian Centre for Mining Environmental Research (ACMER) to enable more effective prevention and management of AD. This paper briefly documents the extent of AD in the industry, the government regulations and guidelines for AD management, industry initiatives, the role of ACMER and other organisations in assisting industry through research and technology transfer, and the efforts being made to deal with AD at derelict mines. Future management of AD in the industry will be assisted by the linkage of Australia (through ACMER) into the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) which is facilitating the interchange of knowledge on AD as well as coordinating global research on the topic.

Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation is a challenging and demanding field, requiring application of professional knowledge, skill and experience of the highest order. If the many potential pitfalls are to be avoided, however, there are two other requirements which are of equal, if not greater, importance:good communication, and common sense. Estimation of Mineral Resources and particularly of Ore Reserves is almost always a team effort, involving a number of disciplines. Good teamwork requires good communication, both between team members and between the team and other parties having an interest in the process. Breakdown in these lines of communication can have far reaching effects on the project under consideration. The need to use common sense during a Resource or Reserve estimation exercise would seem to be self-evident. It is surprising, however, how often rigid adherence to procedures and methods prevails at the expense of clear thinking, usually with adverse and sometimes fatal effects on the project under consideration. This has become increasingly true as computerised methods have assumed a central role in Resource/Reserve estimation. The critical question that estimators should ask themselves at all stages of the process is: æIs what is being done sensible given the data available, what is known of this deposit and the purpose of the exercise?Æ

Structural mapping of pit walls can be performed using digital images and photogrammetry software, but the performance is limited by weather and environmental conditions including dust, rain and light. On the other hand, active sensors such as terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and total stations (TS) suffer from vertical orientation bias and occlusions when persistent discontinuities dip at the same angle as the scanner line-ofsight. The recent development of the compact light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems has made it possible to mount these sensors on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones which offer the potential to overcome limitations that are inherent in existing mapping systems. This study details the research involving integration and application of an advanced UAV-LiDAR system for structural mapping of a highwall. A state-of-the art laser scanner with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and real-time kinematic global positioning system (GPS) was integrated on to a UAV. The system was first tested in a laboratory condition. Then the UAV-LiDAR system was employed to map a highwall of a coal mine. The planned flight trajectories tested the system at variable distances from the highwall face and at various speeds. The raw data collected from individual sensors were fused, filtered to remove noise, and segmented to produce a surface scan model. Finally, the point density and surface coverage were measured using the surface scan model of the highwall. The parameters were compared with equivalent measurements computed from a reference TLS data. The study demonstrates the capabilities of a UAV-LiDAR system to generate accurate and occlusion free data for mapping highwall geological structure with very quick and efficient flights in the field. "This paper was primarily put together in order to demonstrate what are believed to be acceptablestandards, in relation to ventilation surveys and the subsequent model assembly process. Thiswas brought about by the fact that in many parts of the world it is regarded as acceptable to carryout ventilation surveys and then build and supply the client with a æstick fi gureÆ type ventilationmodel. Such stick models have arguably litt le use and a very short life span in the real world and isalmost impossible for site staff to maintain. Thankfully most underground coal mines in Australia strive to maintain a true replica model of their ventilation circuits and to keep them in a relatively good state. Given that these mines own and maintain the models, it is often seen as necessary to update or rebuild them. The level of survey detail required to do so is totally dependent on the end use of the data and the criticality of the accuracy of the data set, to the ongoing safety and viability of the business. Mine technical personnel should think clearly about the use and importance of the ventilation survey and subsequent report outputs required that will help them bett er understand their mines and bett er prepare them to manage their ventilation circuits, on an ongoing basis. This paper provides some guidance for Australian ventilation engineers so they may plan and execute this work æin houseÆ, should they rightly choose to do so. To this end, methods of data collection and circuit analysis required for surveys of a high order of accuracy are detailed. Also, some of the issues which are important when formulating a strategy to carry out the appropriate ventilation survey for the required purpose are summarised. As well, the major details that should be furnished within any survey and some survey/report outputs and/or omissions, which are clearly not acceptable, are highlighted."

Gold mineralisation at Macraes occurs as late quartz-carbonate veins within a body of sheared and hydrothermally altered Otago Schist, the Intrashear Schist. The alteration is characterised by the presence of rutile and the absence of epidote and titanite, indicative of an alteration fluid containing >10 mol per cent CO2. In areas of high strain, a fabric of black microshears develops, gradational to mylonitic cataclasite in the high strain zone adjacent to the hanging wall of the duplex shear zone. The microshears contain hydrothermal graphite, inferred to have been deposited from a methane-rich fluid. The mylonitic cataclasite is characterised by abundant pyrite, the absence of albite and extreme grain size reduction. Gold recovery in the CIL processing plant at Macraes can drop to 50 per cent or lower for some unfavourable ore types. Preg-robbing by a component in the ore, possibly graphite, was suspected as the cause. Mylonitic cataclasite was identified as the lithology responsible for the poor recoveries, with the capacity to bind about 30 ppm of gold in the leach tanks. A program of detailed geochemistry and quantitative grain-size measurement using Coulter analysis was undertaken to identify specific mineralogical factors associated with preg-robbing. The results indicate that pyrite, graphite, and extreme grain-size reduction are the factors associated with highly preg-robbing ores at Macraes. The evolution of the mylonitic cataclasite is accompanied by strong potassium enrichment, as muscovite, and depletion in sodium as albite is removed. This suggests that a simple powder XRD ratio of the albite to illite peaks would suffice to distinguish the preg-robbing ore for grade-control purposes.

Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. "Quebrada Blanca is a porphyry copper deposit located in the Eocene-Oligocene belt of Chilean Andes. Operation started in 1994 and original reserves for supergene mineralisation gave a life-of-mine (LOM) of 20 years; however, further exploration extended the LOM until 2020.In order to optimise the remaining five years of supergene resource, geometallurgical variables were added to the geological model including copper recovery and acid consumption. LOM plan encompasses finishing the phase number eight and the future development of phases 11 and 13.LOM lithologies include diorites, quartz monzonites, porphyries, igneous and tourmaline breccias. Main alterations are: potassic, phyllic and argillic. Litho-alterations or geometallurgical units were formed by combining five types of rocks with three types of alteration. According to statistical information, the deposit can be represented with 12 litho-alteration units, which cover 98 per cent of the LOM volume.For copper recovery information, there were 40 mini-columns tests made in order to obtain kinetics curves and copper recovery values after comparing the difference between head and tails grades. Acid consumption was obtained using an automatic neutraliser device-based test.Historical data said that copper recovery in pads after 450 days of irrigation is around 75 per cent of recoverable copper while acid consumption is around 5.5 kg/t.According to this study, lower recoveries are related with potassic-altered diorites and argillic-altered quartz monzonites with values around 60 per cent. On the other hand, best recoveries could be found in potassic-altered quartz monzonites and argillic-altered diorites with values closer to 80 per cent.It was also revealed that the most reactive rock is the potassic-altered diorite with 12 kg/t of acid consumption. This rock covers approximately 40 per cent from phases 11 and 13.The final geomet model was calculated using a program that relates each geometallurgical unit with a specific copper recovery and acid consumption value. As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.

"The Gold Fields group and Gekko Systems have successfully worked together on multiple projects, including at the St Ives, Agnew and Granny Smith operations in Western Australia, and the Damang operations in Ghana, with gravity recovery design, technology installation and optimisation the key driver on each occasion.In 2014, Gold Fields Australia identified an opportunity to challenge the historical thinking at Granny Smith and reassessed the benefit of upfront gravity gold recovery. The historical approach had been to employ gravity on the tailings stream of the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, recovering sulfide minerals into a concentrate from spiral concentrators for further liberation of gold via a regrind circuit.Gekko was engaged to assess the implementation of a gravity circuit within the grinding area, and to perform a comprehensive gravity recoverable gold test program. Test data was fed into the AMIRA P420 BCC Gravity Model to confirm the gravity recovery potential of the ore, and for process design basis generation. Height, space and capital limitations proved to be a design challenge. However, collaborative learnings throughout the project ensured the design and operation of a reliable and economic gravity gold circuit. Ultimately, the Granny Smith gravity circuit was a success, satisfying all the project objectives and yielding consistent, measurable benefits. On average, the gravity circuit recovers 33 per cent of total gold, resulting in an increase to overall gold recovery by 0.7 per cent.This paper highlights the key project drivers for Gold Fields, and the development of the Granny Smith free gold gravity circuit. It details application of test work and modelling, and the challenges and learnings encountered during the design, installation and commissioning stages. Fine-grained coal tailings slurry undergoes only limited settling and self-weight consolidation, and tends to remain slurry-like and unsuitable for conventional laboratory consolidation testing. In addition, constant rate of loading consolidation testing is more representative of the continuous disposal of tailings slurry into a tailings storage facility (TSF) than conventional step loading. The laboratory consolidation testing of coal tailings slurry under a constant rate of loading has been carried out in a purpose-built, large-scale, slurry consolidometer, instrumented with load cells and pore water pressure (PWP) transducers. In the slurry consolidometer, the rate of loading may be varied to represent the actual rate of rise of the tailings in the TSF. A slow rate of loading increases the test duration, while too fast a rate of loading may build up very high excess PWP, without achieving significant consolidation. For the particular fine-grained coal tailings slurry tested, the rate of loading in the slurry consolidometer is varied to access its effect on the development and dissipation of excess PWP. Screening is a critical part of many mineral processing circuits and keeping the aperture of the screening media within specification is vital to ensure efficient performance of the processing plant. Typical ways of estimating and/or measuring the wear of the screening media vary from very subjective methods (for instance, using the human eye) to manually checking the width of a few of the more severely worn gaps with a measurement device. Subjective methods can be flawed by human error while manual checking can distort the polyurethane or rubber materials that are used in several types of screening media. All of these errors can cause either premature replacement of panels or, even worse, poor screening of the material.Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) and Metso Screening Media Solutions (SMS) have developed an innovative method that measures screen aperture using advanced image processing techniques. Field trials of the device are presented in this paper, which shows the comparison between the different methods of measuring apertures. Case studies demonstrate how the system, when combined with ScreenTrack, MetsoÆs industry leading maintenance system, and screening media, is providing users with the best possible screening solutions.

An examination has been made of the rate and extent of removal of carbon from scrap metal charges when the melt is exposed to atmospheres which are reducing or oxidising with respect to FeO at unit activity. The mechanisms of decarburisation of molten Fe-C-S- P-Mn-Si alloys with H2/CO/H20/C02 gas mixtures with controlled compositions at high or low concentrations of carbon in the melt in the presence and in the absence of sponge iron, in both slag free melts and in the presence of various slag forming additives are discussed. A significant quantity of carbon can be removed from the metal during the melting stage and under optimum conditions, a high percentage of metal recovery and low carbon can be obtained after exposure of melt to the above gas mixture with controlled compositions. The presence of ferrous oxide provided by poorly reduced ore in the charge and the use of controlled atmospheres facilitated the removal of carbon to very low level during the melting period.

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.
