McArthur River Mine is located approximately 50 km south-east of the NT township of Borroloola and approximately 120 km from the Gulf of Carpentaria. The mine hosts a series of layered shallow dipping tabular orebodies, with current reserves of approximately 22 Mt, grading 13.6 per cent zinc, 6.3 per cent lead and 65 g/t silver. Owing to economic considerations, the lower most orebody (No 2 orebody) has been selected for initial mine production. Following the completion of the No 2 orebody, mining will transfer to the lower grade and metallurgically more complex No 4 orebody. The mine employs a total of 235 people throughout the underground and surface areas. The majority of the workforce work a fly-in/fly-out, seven-day- on/seven- day- off roster with 12-hour shifts. Presently, a further 18 contractors are involved in trial mining areas. An apparent dip room and pillar technique has been selected as the primary mining method. Officially opened in September 1995, the current production rate of 1.2 Mt per annum will eventually escalate to 1.5 Mt per annum. Though most production is achieved through the use of conventional loaders, trucks and jumbos, the recent development of methods utilising scrapers, hand held machines and modified jumbos has produced encouraging results in steeper dipping areas of the mine. Initial production has been hindered by several factors including extensive and largely unpredictable faulting, worse than expected ground conditions and difficulties with some mining equipment. Compounded by the relatively thin 3 m ore seam, initial mining resulted in high dilution and poor production. This paper describes the development of unique planning and production systems that were evolved in order to overcome these problems and achieve the targeted production rates and head grade.

A review has been made of the studies focusing on methods for the description of grain -size distribution after breakage and, separa- tely, of the degree of liberation of the miner- al species making up the various grain-size classes of comminution products. The purpose of the study has been to de- velop an overall model of the phenomenon which, owing to the very effect of comminution, leads to the formation of grains that are generally of mixed composition. A calculation procedure has thus been de- veloped for the liberation function taken as the assessment of the distribution of mix com- ponents in the products obtained after a commi- nution process. The aim is to identify a func- tion which may, to a certain extent, simulate the variation of the grade-recovery function of an ore in relation to its degree of comminu- tion. The numerical model thus obtained has been tested out on results obtained experimentally.

Although the majority of current steel production is supported by iron ore sourced from high-grade haematite deposits, the long-term growing demand for steel has led to higher raw material prices and opened the way for many new magnetite deposits to also be developed. There is a rich and long history of magnetite ore processing in Western countries, including large operations such as Cleveland Cliffs in the USA and LKAB in Sweden, as well as smaller operations like Savage River in Tasmania. The challenge for virtually all magnetite operations is to minimise operating costs, which is dominated by the cost of power required to fine grind the ore in order to achieve acceptable concentrate iron grade together with low impurity content. This remains the case today and will be even more important in the future when a carbon tax is expected to become a significant addition to the operating costs for magnetite deposits. Historically, the lowest operating cost was achieved by multistage fully autogenous grinding with integrated magnetic separation steps between the stages. The major benefit of fully autogenous grinding is the elimination of steel grinding media costs and the need to discriminate between steel and magnetite in coarse magnetic separation. The separation step between grinding stages progressively reduces the amount of material to be ground. Application of more efficient grinding technologies developed in the last 20 years, including high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for fine crushing and stirred milling for fine grinding, has provided opportunities to further reduce the operating costs associated with comminution. Both technologies are already implemented in some magnetite processing operations, although in limited capacity. The results of a theoretical option study for high capacity processing of a hard, fine-grained silica-rich magnetite ore is presented in this paper, with the emphasis on comminution circuit options. Several circuit options are ranked based on a net present value analysis incorporating an estimate of carbon tax added in the operating cost. The study demonstrates the significant advantages of applying more efficient autogenous grinding technologies.

An important issue currently facing the mining industry in Australia is the management and cost to the industry and other stakeholders of entry into and exit from towns and their communities. These costs can be environmental, social, economic, political or reputational. The ability of companies to engage the trust of stakeholders, including: communities, governments and investors, is critical, and corporate reputation plays a significant role in this. For the industry to secure a long-term and sustainable future, it must have the technical, business and reputation assets to proceed in a cost-effective, environmentally acceptable and socially supportive way. This research assesses reputation as a critical competitive issue for mining companies, as technology and information make mining more predictable; the physical and human assets of mining companies are less likely to be the critical resource in a Resource Based View model of competitive advantage. The proposition is that in mining today, reputation as it facilitates day-to-day operations, regulatory zeal and access to new mine sites will become the rare, inimitable and valuable resource for mining companies. This paper reports on an ongoing research program to evaluate the impact a mining companyÆs reputation(s), with its various stakeholder groups, has on a companyÆs ability to sustain competitive advantage. Integral to this study is to develop an understanding of the relationships between mining companies and their stakeholders, and the importance of corporate citizenship polices to reputation and hence to corporate sustainability. Through the identification of the drivers of reputation for the various stakeholder groups, a model of reputation formation will be developed and also reputation measures for the mining industry in Australia. The preliminary findings of this research, the results of an industry focus group conducted with representatives from regional mining operations, are reported. The industry focus group was designed to enable a better understanding of who are the main stakeholder groups and how they regard mining companies and to inform the second stage of the research project a Delphi Study of the drivers of reputation by stakeholder groups. The aim of this research is to further the understanding of the relationship between corporate citizenship, reputation and performance in the mining industry, thus assisting companies to strategically manage their corporate citizenship investments.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has conducted an intensive VertiMill® (VTM) survey program at the Cannington mine concentrator as part of the ‘collaborative research in stirred milling technology’ program funded by Metso Minerals. Since 2003, Cannington has progressively added grinding capacity into the circuit through VTMs operating in secondary and regrinding duties. Cannington was one of the first mines to adopt this technology in secondary duty by installing two VTM-1500-WBs as part of a capacity expansion to produce sub-100 µm rougher feed. Subsequently, an additional VTM-800-WB was installed in the lead regrind circuit to prepare sub-20 µm cleaner stage feed.Several surveys were carried out to evaluate the VTM performance over a range of changed conditions. Among the key changes in operating variables were circuit power draw, feed rate and water addition to the bottom of the mill. The average specific energy for secondary duty was 3.7?kWh/t. The lead and zinc regrind mills consume 8.1 and 15.3 kWh/t respectively. Generally, the VTM installations have successfully prepared feed for rougher and cleaner circuits by reducing the top size into the floatable regime with steeper particle size distribution, which has led to enhanced recovery. This study focuses on the recovery of valuable metals, specifically silver (Ag) and palladium (Pd), from copper-containing sludge (with copper content less than 20 per cent) generated during PCB processing and from spent petrochemical catalysts used in vapour decomposition during oil refining processes. The present results indicate that an increase in the mixing ratio of alumina-based spent catalyst leads to a decrease in the recovery rate of Ag and Pd. The recovery rates for Ag and Pd range from 84 per cent to 96 per cent and 80 per cent to 98 per cent, respectively. This trend is attributed to the increased emulsification of copper droplets containing Ag and Pd in the slag. The emulsification is caused by the decrease in the settling velocity of the copper droplets due to the increased viscosity of the slag as well as by the decrease in the slag-metal interfacial tension due to an increase in sulfur content at higher mixing ratio of spent catalyst.

Vertical retreat open stoping (VROS) is a variation of sublevel open stoping (SLOS) that has been introduced at Cannington to minimise the influence of subvertical geological structures during stope extraction. The first application of VROS is described, where structures within the stope resulted in a change in firing sequence and the extraction of two complete sublevels in a single blast. The use of electronic detonators is critical to the success of VROS and their application is described. Numerous benefits of using VROS have been identified and are described. To date, eight stopes have been successfully mined using VROS. In addition to the first application of VROS, two further case studies are described.

VV Mineral (VVM) group of companies is the largest and the first private producer and exporter of beach sand mineral products in India. During 2010, the company produced and marketed around 750 000 tons of saleable products. Their operations are mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, India. Almost all the wet pre-concentration plants use sea water as the concentration medium, since there is no fresh water source available near the deposits. The mines are located along the south-east coast of India in the states of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. The orebody varies in terms of mineral assemblage, slime content, grain size, and surface coating resulting in different behaviour of the minerals. Three different deposits containing ilmenite of different TiO2 content were studied. The study shows that there is no significant impact of using sea water for wet concentration prior to high tension separation of ilmenite. There is no significant variation in recovery and purity of ilmenite produced from these deposits when wet concentration of the deposits were carried out with sea water as the concentration medium and whether the concentrates were washed with fresh water or not before dry separation using High Tension Roll Separators (HTRS).

In-field sampling programs generally take time, equating to money, and unless you have an onsite laboratory, you have the issue of having to wait long periods for your data. Until recently, field portable X-ray fl uorescence (FPXRF) analysers, which can help provide instant indicative results, were not able to detect penalty elements, such as Al and Si, or do so reliably enough to act upon.The purpose then of this field test then was to show that the latest FPXRF devices are capable of producing reliable readings on field samples of variable grain size, in particular for Al and Si, such that the readings still correlate well with the assay for those samples and thus be reliable for an iron ore grade control application.We tested RC chip samples on-site in the Pilbara, Western Australia, with the Niton, analysing for a range of elements including Fe, Mn, Al and Si and then compared the results for those elements against assay data for the same. A strong correlation would tell us that the FPXRF results were reliable. Furthermore, to show the effect of simple sample preparation, we also analysed pulps of the same samples in the same way.The correlations were good for the all of the four elements of interest for the RC chip samples (R2 values between 0.82 and 0.9), and excellent for the pulps (R2 values between 0.89 and 0.998).The results also showed a direct correlation between sample preparation and improved quality of results with the FPXRF.The data showed allowed for two conclusions:1. the FPXRF can produce data from unprepared RC chips for Al and Si that, when compared with assay, is reliable for a fi eld application in drilling and grade control; and2. the greatest limitation to data quality is sample preparation.

Pre-concentration has potential to significantly improve Mineral Resource efficiency by removing gangue early in the process, before energy intensive and expensive comminution and fine processing. However, there are numerous options for pre-concentration and the performance and benefits of these are very case specific. To determine the best option for a particular deposit and to successfully integrate it into the overall mining and processing operations requires comprehensive evaluation. This needs to consider orebody suitability, technology capability and economic viability. The in-situ variability of a deposit and how it is influenced by mining methods and the liberation size of gangue are key factors which are generally not well understood. Geostatistical methods provide an insight into orebody variability, and the overall selection of any pre-concentration solution must be an integrated approach between geology, mining and processing. Many pre-concentration evaluations investigate the potential of just one option. Technology selection should start wide and may include: selective mining, pre-screening (with or without selective blasting), sorting (bulk and or particle), coarse gravity separation (e.g. jigging, DMS), coarse particle flotation, magnetic separation, etc. The upgrade performance of these processes is very ore specific and should be determined from testing, with detailed multi-component modelling used to determine the overall process performance. Many of these pre-concentration processes require significant ancillary equipment, feed preparation and materials handling. It is important to realistically estimate all costs to understand overall economics and select the best option. Some examples showing evaluation and comparison of pre-concentration options are presented in this paper. These include assessments of in-situ variability using geostatistical tools, process modelling of pre-concentration options and overall performance, preliminary layouts and cost estimates, and economic evaluations.

The current moment experienced by the mineral industry is marked by a series of economic, social and environmental challenges. Among the main challenges, it is important to highlight the decreasing in ore grades with the gradual depletion of the existing deposits, the high volatility in international commodity prices and the operational inefficiencies in the mine, beneficiation, and metallurgical plants. In this context, mining companies are continuously looking for alternatives that minimize production costs and maximize overall production. In addition, recent tragedies involving tailings dam collapses in Brazil, reinforced the need for a more responsible, sustainable, and conscious mining, such as aiming the preservation and rehabilitation of the land environment. In this scenario, the Sensor-Based Sorting (SBS) technology is currently getting more space into the mining market. This separation technology aims the removal of gangue material in coarse particle size fractions, prior to comminution and concentration stages. As a consequence, the technology allows a smaller consumption of energy, water, chemical reagents and other inputs. Moreover, the sensor-based sorting is a dry processing technology and favors the reduction of fine material to be sent to the tailings. The aim of this paper is to provide information regarding the technical and economical evaluation of SBS technology applicability to a zinc silicate mining in Brazil. The project evaluation was performed in two stages: laboratory test work and the execution of a pilot plant. The execution of a pilot plant allowed the technology optimization, quantification of downstream process effects, such as a proper economic evaluation about the technology benefits. Traditional methods for installing gaskets for segmented bored tunnels have relied upon different bonding procedures with adhesives that carry a series of disadvantages to segment producers. Fixation of the gaskets into the concrete segment as part of the casting procedure has been developed over the last 20 years and has emerged as an economical solution to produce high-quality tunnel segments for various technical tunnel applications. The paper describes a spreadsheet system that enables selection of projects and companies that meet the user's corporate exploration and/or acquisition philosophy. A regularly maintained commercially available database has been used as the basis for this system. It provides an easily accessible efficient com- prehensive search method. The technique enables ranking by various criteria, both technical and financial, to provide groups of projects/companies that are of interest. Initially, target size parameters such as reserves, production and mine life are applied together with geological criteria such as age and deposit type; the significance of the targets in the context of the Australian gold industry is addressed.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. In order to shorten the time taken to com- plete shield tunnel excavation work, reduce labor costs and to improve safety, an automatic assembly robot system for the segments used has been developed. It was developed in the three years from 1982 until 1984. An experimental assembly system for concrete segments (outer diameter:.3.55m) has been thoroughly tested to confirm that these segments can be fed and assembled automatically (Fig. 1, 2). This report outlines the robot which will be put into practical use in the near future. The robot senses the position of already assem- bled segments by means of position sensors, controls the position and the attitude of the segment to be assembled to allow bolt hole positioning, and completes the automatic assembly of a se;nent by automatically tighten- ing bolts. The six segments which make up one ring can be automatically assembled in about 25 minutes.

It is only in the past decade or so that industrial exploitation of biological resources and techniques has become regarded as a distinct discipline. Commonly referred to as Biotechnology, it embraces biochemistry, microbiology and the engineering sciences and is mainly aimed at the biological conversion of suitable raw materials into desired end products. The catalytic agents are more often than not bacteria although other micro-organisms such as fungi are used. The range of micro-organisms used is wide and the choice depends upon the desired end product, which in turn depends upon the metabolic attributes, genetically engineered or otherwise, of the cells. The metabolic diversity of micro-organisms has been applied to processes such as antibiotic production, food processing, brewing and chemical production, and of course extraction of metals from ores. Metabolic diversity is, to a certain extent, based on nutrition, which, in its simplest form, can be divided into energy source, carbon requirements and nature of the electron donor producing reducing power to the cells. The source of energy may be light, in which case the organisms are phototrophic (eg green plants, algae). The carbon requirements and reducing power may come from organic sources. These organisms are then called heterotrophic (eg man and most bacteria, including the well known Escherichia colt). However, there is a group of bacteria whose energy metabolism depends upon chemical redox reactions, use inorganic carbon (CO2) and obtain their reducing power from reduced chemicals such as metal sulphides. These are known as chemolithotrophs. They play an important role in mineral recycling in nature and are also ideal for extraction of metals from ores. This is because they are extremeophiles being acidophilic (grow at very low pH) and sometimes also thermophilic (grow at very high temperatures). These bacteria operate in such hostile environments that competition, or contamination, by other organisms does not occur. Extraction of metals from ores by chemolithotrophic bacteria is commonly referred to as biohydrometallurgy. Other related areas are bioadsorption of metals from dilute solution,- microbial treatment of metal contaminated wastes and removal of toxic chemicals produced or used during mineral processing. This paper basically reviews the work that Gencor has undertaken in the field of biohydrometallurgy and the advancements it has made in commercialising the technology, but also touches on certain long-term areas of research that are currently under investigation.

The flotation mechanism plays a key role in the flotation process. It is used to provide the contact between solid particles and bubbles and also the energy for these particles and bubbles to attach. The mechanism must therefore provide sufficient mixing to keep the solids in suspension so that they can be transported into the froth and recovered to the concentrate. The design of the mechanism is critical and over the past decade Outotec has developed and optimised a new mechanism design to improve metallurgical and energy performance. The FloatForce® mechanism consists of a rotor and stator arrangement and has been specifically designed to provide sustained mixing at higher air flows and lower power inputs.Over 500 FloatForce® mechanisms have been installed in existing and new operations. This paper outlines the technological aspects of the FloatForce® mechanism and provides metallurgical, operational and energy performance results from a number of flotation circuits in which these have been installed.

The world reserves of high-grade iron ore have depleted necessitating the need to utilise any existing natural iron ore deposits to meet the demands of the world’s expanding economy using hydrogen in the reduction process to curb CO2 emission. These low-grade ores include iron ores with high phosphorus content. The thermodynamic conditions in the blast furnace allow for the reduction of phosphorus that readily dissolves into the molten iron. Phosphorus in the gaseous state readily dissolves into the molten iron and therefore must be removed due to its negative influence on the mechanical properties of steel. The removal of phosphorus from molten iron is difficult causing the phosphorus to concentrate in metallic iron. The aim of this study is to provide basic knowledge on the phosphorus distribution after reduction using the CO-H2 and possibly provide the optimum conditions for phosphorus partitioning into slag, increasing the probability of its removal by magnetic separation. Total porosity, pore size distribution and surface area of the pellets used were measured using a mercury pressure porosimeter. The reduction was carried out using thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The reduction rate increased with increasing H2 and was highest when 100 per cent H2 was used. Metal elements distribution in the reduced pellet was clarified using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and showed that phosphorus was distributed in the same areas as Ca. More phosphorus was concentrated in slag when 50 per cent CO–50 per cent H2 was used, increasing the probability of dephosphorization using magnetic separation. The concentration of phosphorus into slag was related to the rate of reduction. Further investigations into the reduction kinetics of this ore by CO-H2 is suggested to validate these findings. Nevertheless, a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of the reduction of phosphorus containing phases found in iron ore with carbon, CO and H2 was provided to assist in selecting the optimal reduction experimental conditions.

The results of full-scale tests on precast segment made at University of Roma are presented. The segments were cast using fibre-reinforced concrete produced without any traditional reinforcement, by using fiber made in high-strength steel and a new type of anchorage.Bending tests were performed in order to check the bearing capacity of the segments under the flexural actions; these occur during de-moulding, handling, storage phases as well as in the in situ condition (due to asymmetric soil pressure). Furthermore, point load tests simulating the TBM thrust were performed, in order to study the construction phase (excavation).The results show that the segment response largely respects the material testing and design advice according to the Fib Model Code 2010. Blasting operations play a pivotal role in the overall economics of opencast mines. The blasting subsystem affects all the other associated subsystems, ie loading, transport, crushing and milling operations. Fragmentation control through effective blast design and its effect on productivity is a challenging job for the practicing blasting engineer due to inadequate knowledge of actual explosive energy released in the borehole, effect of varying initiation practice in blast design and its effect on explosive energy release characteristic. This paper describes the result of a systematic study on the impact of blast design parameters on rock fragmentation at two mines in India. Both the mines use draglines and shovel-dumper combination for removal of overburden. Despite its pivotal role in controlling the overall economics of a mining operation, the expected blasting performance is often judged almost exclusively on the basis of poorly defined parameters such as powder factor and is often qualitative, which results in a very subjective assessment of blasting performance. Such an approach is a very poor substitute for accurate assessment of explosive and blasting performance. Forty-seven blasts were conducted with varying blast designs and charging patterns and their impact on the rock fragmentation are documented. A high-speed camera was deployed to record the detonation sequences of the blasts.
