Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning. is placed in a waste rock dump, which is usually later reshaped to be erosionally stable, initiate and sustain vegetation and ultimately integrate with the surrounding undisturbed landscape. However, it is unclear how this exhumed material will weather and evolve for most sites. Also, there is a lack of data on the weathering of post-mining materials. If weathering is better understood, then there is the potential to improve rehabilitation outcomes. To improve predictions of the evolution of soil properties and weathering-limited erosion, estimating the rate at which fine, transportable material is produced from the weathering of larger, non-transportable particles and the resultant fragment size distribution and how that distribution evolves over time is necessary. This study examines the weathering process for four different coalmine waste rock materials for a Bowen Basin, Queensland site. Materials obtained from various areas of the coalmine were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying and heating and cooling. Particle size distribution and other material properties were explored after each experimental cycle to ascertain how the material changes during the experimental cycles. The particle size distribution data of wet and dry cycles were used as input data in a numerical weathering model to explore the dynamics of the weathering process for each material sample. A Monte Carlo framework was employed to assess the geometry of the weathering products, weathering rate and the number of daughter particles produced within a weathering cycle. Then the SSSPAM Landscape Evolution Model was used to evaluate the influence of weathering on erosion and landscape evolution of a post mining landform. SSSPAM simulations with: (i) active weathering and (ii) without weathering were run for each material. The erosion rate and the overall landform structure were then compared between weathering and non-weathering simulations.

Sierra Rutile LimitedÆs (SRL) heavy mineral sand mining operation in Sierra Leone, West Africa, is embarking on a new phase of its life. After confronting many challenges during the 1990s and 2000s, SRL is embarking on a strategy of growth to recover maximum value from the mine over the rest of its life. Sophisticated linear programming techniques have been used to develop an optimum strategy for extracting SRLÆs many known deposits of economic grade, while considering options for expansion and for a variety of mining and processing methods and combinations. Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

Recent structural interpretations based on historic stope shapes were used to develop a rapid and innovative method to domain and simulate structurally complex, high-grade gold veins at depth in the Edna May deposit. This involved ‘implicit’ modelling of drill hole data using Leapfrog software, which allows complex wireframe domains to be built and updated rapidly, compared to ‘explicit’ manual wireframing methods that are too subjective and time consuming. Conditional simulation was used for resource estimation, in order to simulate the highly variable gold grades associated with the veins. Similar modelling methods could be used to determine the mining potential of other historic gold deposits that are receiving renewed interest because of the high gold price.Gold at Edna May is hosted in the Edna May Gneiss, which is a WNW-striking tonalitic intrusion along a shear zone that dips approximately 45° towards the NNE. Gold occurs in multiple 0.5 - 5 m thick arcuate quartz veins that plunge steeply towards the west. Two phases of historic underground mining at Edna May (1911 to 1922 and 1935 to 1947) produced 360 000 ounces of gold at an average grade 19.5 g/t from seven ‘reefs’ to a depth of 240 m. This established Edna May as one of the highest grade gold mines in Western Australia at the time.Recent drilling by Catalpa Resources confirmed the potential for down-plunge continuity of high-grade veins. New structural interpretations, based on historic level maps and wireframe re-constructions of the arcuate stope shapes, were used as ‘structural trends’ in Leapfrog to model the mineralisation. The resulting wireframes capture the complex distribution of gold in the deposit and were used as domains for resource estimation.Conditional simulation using the Turning Bands method was used to simulate the expected variability of gold grades associated with this mineralisation style and the median of the 100 realisations was used to report an inferred resource. Results of this modelling method are being used to target vein extensions at depth, to consider different underground mining scenarios, and to assess the risks associated with developing and mining this high-grade and high-nugget gold deposit.

In the quest to access valuable critical minerals, humankind is expanding the frontier into extreme environments like space and deep-sea mining. These ambitious enterprises involve considerable costs and lengthy development cycles to ensure the robustness of mining systems in the face of the harshest conditions and unforeseen challenges. Unfortunately, obtaining information from these unexplored territories is complicated. Data is often scarce, incomplete or impossible to obtain until equipment is deployed, leaving engineers facing many uncertainties throughout the design, testing, production and preparation of such missions. Despite these challenges, these extreme environments operate under consistent physical and chemical principles that can be faithfully digitally replicated. However, unexplored areas and dynamic systems like weather and geology continue to carry uncertainties. While eliminating uncertainties remains elusive, Digital Twins offers a means of robust risk management tool. These virtual replicas can excel in simulating extreme conditions and unexpected events, helping optimise and validate mining system designs tailored for such hostile environments. This study takes inspiration from the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover’s wheel damage rate to develop a Multiphysics Modelling and Virtual Motion Simulation (MMVMS) system. Using advanced Generative Design, this MMVMS system refines the MSL’s design, simulates component and system performance, and assesses the risk of premature damage while operating on Mars. Additionally, MMVMS integrates cutting-edge CAD design technologies from aerospace and manufacturing to realistically recreate the Martian environment and a detailed representation of MSL, allowing mobility verification and validation simulation to test different components in terms of materials, design, weight, power and, therefore, cost. The research highlights the precision of MMVMS in replicating extreme conditions, simulating and evaluating internal and external variables influencing the entire system (Rover) in real-time, and predicting movements, failures, and premature damage. This sophisticated Digital Twin technology, showcased in this research, holds promise not only for space missions but also to be adapted for terrestrial and deep-sea mining operations.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. "In sulfide nickel deposits throughout the world, pentlandite and pyrrhotite are commonly found together along with varying amounts of chalcopyrite and platinum group minerals (PGMs). The mafic or ultramafic host silicates associated with the sulfide mineralisation commonly exhibit a complex assemblage of magnesium bearing silicates, many of which themselves contain significant nickel. Four types of ore are proposed, each presenting their own processing challenges. These are: economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE (platinum group element) in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with low pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios  economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with moderate to high pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios uneconomic high pyrrhotite: low tenor deposits low-grade low sulfide, high MgO ± PGE deposits that can sometimes be economically mined and processed.The grades and recoveries of nickel concentrates produced from sulfide ores can be significantly impacted by the ore mineral texture, the nickel tenor of the sulfides, and the polytype of pyrrhotite which may be either hexagonal (non-magnetic) or monoclinic (magnetic). The mineralogy of the silicates is also of great importance, especially the magnesium silicates and those which tend to produce particles which are asbestiform or which affect slurry viscosity. Other magnesium silicates such as serpentine carry nickel in solid solution, limiting the recovery entitlement of nickel by flotation because serpentine is not amenable to sulfide flotation mechanisms. Differences in plant flow sheets and reagent assemblages are required to effectively separate these minerals.Experience from a variety of plant operations and from extensive flow sheet development programs are discussed. Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

The non-renewable energy resources of Queensland comprise coal, petroleum (oil and gas), oil shale and uranium. Coal is widely distributed., and has been developed extensively both for export and for use within the State. Proven reserves total 5 390 million tonnes recoverable of coking coal and 5 580 million tonnes recoverable of non-coking; very large resources particularly of non-coking coal are still to be quantified by further drilling. Annual production is of the order of 20 million tonnes of coking coal, principally for export, and 6 million tonnes of non-coking, mainly for power generation within the State. Petroleum resources are meagre in com- parison with those of coal. Initial recover- able reserves of liquids (mainly in the now substantially depleted Moonie Oil Field) totalled only 4.2 million m3. Initial recover- able reserves of gas (mainly in the western Surat and Bowen Basins) totalled 7 800 million m3. Annual production is of the order of 64 thousand m3 of liquids for refining in Bris- bane, and 268 million m3 of gas mainly for production of fertiliser and for industrial and domestic heating, in Brisbane. Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) has recently undertaken an exercise to improve orebody basal definition. Older mineralisation bases (pre-2005) were highly erratic using old protocol reverse circulation (RC) (also known as Air Core) drilling and interpretation. The erratic nature of this estimation tool, resulted in impractical modelling towards the end of mineralisation (EOM), difficult mine design and unrealistic reconciliation. New protocol drilling, which includes high definition SONIC drilling data, has provided more data to be available for more accurate interpretation. Recent advances in drilling methodology has allowed for better penetration depths for SONIC drilling, which was previously restricted to approximately 80 m (pre-2005). This improved data set allows more emphasis on geological interpretation with factors such as lithology, slime content, and mineral species distribution. These factors when in unique combination enable more accurate and realistic EOM data points. These points are modelled into surfaces using conditional simulation techniques and result in a vastly smoother surface and consequently, a more representative resource.

On-belt analysers have been used since the early 1980s in the coal sector to measure ash content in real time for diverting material on conveyors to remove waste, bypass beneficiation and allow suitable material to proceed to the wash plant for processing. Since 2008, a GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser has been used on an overland conveyor in South Africa to divert direct-shipping quality iron ore to bypass a jig plant. This paper focusses on recent evaluation work to determine the suitability of an on-belt analyser to upgrade the processing plant feed in a copper-gold operation.Copper-gold ore samples from New Gold’s New Afton Mine near Kamloops, BC, Canada were tested to assess measurement accuracy over short time increments. A two-minute measurement increment has been used in the minerals sector as a compromise between good measurement accuracy and a useful tonnage (haul truck equivalent size or smaller). At New Afton, this increment represents approximately 35 t of material. Segregation decisions are currently made after visual and sometimes analytical determination, at increments of approximately 500 t to designate material as ore or waste at the drawbell in the cave.Results of test work including the composition range and expected accuracies by element are shown. The operation, which is not mine constrained, was evaluating the potential for ore upgrading through waste and low grade increment diversion to upgrade ore quality feeding the mill. Prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was considered as the company recognised that it would measure through the full conveyed cross section continuously and produce multi-elemental measurements unaffected by particle size, dust, moisture content, layering and segregation, mineralogy and belt speed.GEOSCAN analyses over various analysis periods will be collected to identify variability in the conveyed material quality and used to generate tonnage-grade curves so that an optimal diversion (bulk sorting) tonnage increment can be determined. The JORC Code contains a mandatory classification system for Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates for public reporting. The classification is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process, or is derived from an estimated level of confidence in the outcome. However, the statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource or reserve which must take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation.In addition to the traditional deterministic interpretation and estimations adopted by geologists, semi-quantitative techniques are now available to improve the estimation of confidence while continuing to involve the Competent PersonÆs experience in the process. Methods for quantifying confidence in mineral resource estimates for advanced projects and operating mines have also been developed.Classification is undertaken primarily as a communication tool between the estimators and the other stakeholders in the process. A brief examination of the stakeholdersÆ requirements is included.

It has long been known that closed circuit grinding with a classifier improves grinding efficiency, reduces unit specific power consumption, and reduces over grinding. The classification device removes material from the circuit that has reached the desired size and returns coarse material back to the mill for further grinding. The efficiency of the classifier is an important factor in the overall performance of a grinding circuit. The classifier affects the capacity of the grinding circuit and the metallurgical performance of downstream operations. A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The Worthing Mine near Hallett Cove. 20 km southwest of the cite of Adelaide, belongs to Aus- tralia's first mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851 (Figure 1). Oper- ations began in 1849 only six years after the com- mencement of metal mining in Australia at Glen Osmond. Although not as historically significant as Glen Osmond (1841), or the much larger copper mines of Kapunda (1844) or Burra (1845) its importance lies with its Cornish enginehouse and chimney. The Worthing enginehouse, built in 1851-1852 is the oldest remaining in Australia and certainly the most significant relic of Australia's first mining era. Six other stone enginehouses were built during that period: at Kapunda in 1848 and 1850: at Burra in 1849, 1850 and 1851; and at Tungkillo in 1849. All of these houses have long since dis- appeared although the foundations of one (Kapunda, 1850) still remain. The significance of the Worthing site is enhanced by its magnificant environmental setting in the bare, steep valley of Field River. Currently (1986) the Worthing Mine is the only site within the City of Marion which is on the Register of State Heritage Items. The site is also included in the Classified List of the National Trust of South Australia and on the Register of the National Estate.
