On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

Channel iron deposits (CID) currently supply over 40 per cent of the seaborne iron ore trade out of the Hamersley Province. The two well documented producing systems (Robe and Marillana palaeochannels) were both discovered during early reconnaissance mapping principally by BHP Billiton (BHPB) and Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) during the mid 1950s to early 1960s. Both crop out extensively over the majority of their length. Hot on the heels of Fortescue Metals Group 2004 - 2005 discovery of approximately 2.6 billion tonnes (Bt) of undercover iron ore mineralisation in the Chichester Range, the Fortescue Exploration Department turned its attention elsewhere throughout the Hamersley Province. Reappraisal and analysis of publicly available data and ground truthing of developing models led to the recognition of the Solomon palaeochannel system. Subsequent exploration defined a world-class Resource of some 1.9 Bt of iron ore mineralisation of which the great majority is buried CID. Apart from the Marillana CID system, the Solomon region is the only major CID with significant tonnes of sub two per cent alumina CID with over 500 Mt delineated to date. Exploration has also outlined significant supergene bedded and detrital iron ore mineralisation. Ongoing drilling is expected to increase the resource base both in terms of tonnes and confidence. This paper outlines the principal contributing factors which led to the discovery of the Solomon CID and compares its geology with the Robe and Marillana palaeochannel systems.

The green production of the steelmaking process has urgent requirements for fluorine-free fluxes. In this article, a new solid waste-based slagging flux was applied in the external dephosphorisation test of low silicon hot metal to replace the traditional fluorite-lime dephosphorisation slag. The results showed that under laboratory conditions, the new flux was utilised for smelting low-silicon molten iron with a phosphorus content of 0.10~0.13 wt per cent, the temperature of the molten iron was 1350°C and the slag amount was controlled at 2 per cent. Within ten minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron reached more than 50 per cent. When making slag with new flux, the slag melting time was about 40 seconds and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 8 wt per cent. In the industrial test of a 150 t molten iron ladle, under the same molten iron conditions, an out-of-furnace dephosphorisation test was conducted in the Kambara Reactor (KR) process. The flux material consumption per ton of steel was 8~10 kg. Within 15 minutes of smelting, the dephosphorisation rate of the molten iron was about 30 per cent. During flux slag making, the slag melting time was about three minutes and the P2O5 content in the final slag was higher than 6 wt per cent. This new solid waste-based flux has significant cost advantages and outof- furnace dephosphorisation effects and is expected to become the benchmark for a new generation of fluorine-free steelmaking fluxes.

The production at First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) Kevitsa Mine, located in northern Finland, commenced during the second quarter of 2012. Presently, the mine processes approximately five and half million tonnes of ore annually, producing nickel, copper and platinum group metal (PGM) concentrates. In order to support fast production ramp-up and optimise the performance of flotation thereafter, an extensive advanced flotation control solution was implemented by Outotec in collaboration with FQM Kevitsa.In addition to basic process instrumentation and process control, each of the 14 Outotec 300 m3 and another 26 cells, ranging from 20–160 m3, have been equipped with state-of-the-art systems providing froth image analysis and automatic froth speed control. Also, the flotation cell levels are stabilised with advanced feed-forward level control.The online analyser provides key feedback information of the process performance for the advanced process control (APC) system. Based on this information, APC system defines grades and recoveries according to rules defined by Kevitsa process metallurgists. This system executes the control strategies for optimising the production of concentrates.Throughout the implementation and support phases, specific and intensive attention was paid to ensure plant personnel gained full understanding of interacting with the system and how to incorporate their process experience and skills to optimise the APC strategy. This level of expertise is also a valuable asset in understanding the APC system’s contribution to the overall performance of the plant as well as providing the ability and confidence to define key performance indicators used for continuous assessment. A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.

The Waihi Gold Mine is situated in a high rainfall area (annual average of over 2 m) on the North Island of New Zealand. Water treatment and discharge at the mine has been ongoing for the last 25 years. The first water treatment plant consisted of a æstandardÆ water treatment facility (ferric chloride precipitation) and cyanide detoxification. With time the project has expanded and the volumes of water increased requiring additional treatment methods (reverse osmosis) to meet the water quality for discharge. Mine operation strategies are commonly optimised with a net present value (NPV) maximisation objective. There are well known properties of a typical mining project optimised for NPV, including high production rates and declining cut-off grade schedules. In practice, however, frequently there are operations that diverge from such NPV-maximising properties. Although a range of reasons for this can be at play, one possible explanation is that operators intuitively adjust their strategies to compensate for the flaws inherent to NPV maximisation. In particular, NPV analysis does not reflect the benefits of managerial flexibility inherent in a mining plan. Real options valuation (ROV) is an alternative approach that addresses this issue. We compare the properties of NPV and ROV optimisation solutions generated for the same scenario. Our simple case study demonstrates that the presence of real operating options in the optimisation model not only entails increased project value as expected, but also tends to encourage lower processing capacity (with lower associated capital cost), higher cut-off grades and greater use of stockpiles.CITATION:Elkington, T and Gould, J, 2012. From time to time failures occur in structures made of lead, and the failure may be due to corrosion involving a definite thinning of the lead sheet, or it may be of such a nature that cracks develop and the lead appears to disintegrate. The idea of lead cracking will at once suggest something abnormal, for common experience shows that this metal is very ductile and will withstand considerable bending without showing any sign of fracture. Cracking, on the other hand, is usually associated with brittleness.Fig. 1 is a natural-size photograph of a cracked sheet of lead. Prior to photographing, the sheet was etched byimmersion in a solution of ammonium molybdate. Several characteristics of this crack will be evident. First of all it is distinctly a zigzag crack, and secondly it passes between, rather than through, certain well-defined areas which appear bright in the photograph. This is particularly noticeable at the lower end where the crack appears to terminate.

"Minerals, minerals, minerals. Elements occur in the earth as minerals. If local physical, chemical and structural conditions are conducive to concentrating these minerals to sufficiently high abundances in the earth’s crust, a mineral deposit will form. If technology is available to extract metals from the minerals economically, then you have a mineral resource that will be mined and processed. Determining which minerals are present and quantifying their abundances, textural characteristics (grain size and shape) and how they are intergrown with each other is the realm of the mineralogist. Geologists use this mineralogical data to understand how the mineral deposit formed, how to find high-grade zones within the deposit and where to find other mineral deposits. Metallurgists use this data to design, operate and optimise processing facilities to extract metals from the minerals. The types, quantity and precision/resolution of the mineralogical data required by geologists and metallurgists are different, but are not mutually exclusive of each other. Western Metals Mt Gordon Operation is a copper mine and processing plant situated 120 kilometres north of Mt Isa. The unique Mt Gordon copper process utilises a whole of ore acid/ferric pressure leach to produce copper cathode from the Esperanza massive sulfide copper orebody. Esperanza ore contains chalcocite, covellite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in a massive pyrite matrix. These ore stocks will be depleted in late 2003. Recently the process circuit has been upgraded to allow the treatment of lower grade Mammoth ores. These include the installation of a ball mill to complement the existing SAG mill, a single stage rougher flotation circuit and a tailings thickener. The leach bleed neutralisation plant was also upgraded at this time. Commissioning of these new circuits occurred in March 2003 and involved all the challenges of ensuring current production levels were successfully maintained while new process steps were incorporated into the whole circuit. This paper explains the background flow sheet of the patented Mt Gordon process and the reasoning behind the enhancements required for an already successful copper leaching circuit. Included are discussion of the influences of the new ores on individual process components such as comminution, leach chemistry and solid/liquid separation. Longer term ore processing options are also discussed.

This paper summarises the influence of slurry rheology on the grinding throughput of batch laboratory and continuous plant-scale mills operating in open and closed circuit configurations. The results of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals are demonstrated. An underlying rheological explanation of the above factors is offered which involves tying the specific rates of breakage that are occurring in the mill with the specific rheological character that the slurry is exhibiting at any given set of operating conditions. Some industrial scale operating guidelines are presented which have proven useful in increasing the net pro- duction capability of grinding circuits.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralization, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

The concept of a ‘critical velocity zone’ in the longwall goaf environment for the development of a spontaneous combustion event has been supported by numerical modelling. However, there is no experimental data available for Australian coals to show ventilation effects on the self-heating incubation behaviour of broken coal in the longwall goaf. A preliminary study using incubation testing has been completed on three high volatile bituminous coals (A, B and C) with R70 self-heating rate values of 3.86°C/h, 3.15°C/h and 2.09°C/h and moisture contents of 11.3 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively. Mass to flow rates used in the adiabatic oven reaction vessel have been selected to be indicative of a sluggish, natural air leakage and medium ventilation environment. Under a sluggish ventilation flow rate all three coals incubate to thermal runaway in minimum time frames of 2.8–3.1 years, 34–42 days and 79–95 days, respectively. When the ventilation flow rate is increased to natural air leakage, coal A with the highest R70 value and highest moisture content selfheats to 28°C above mine ambient temperature before heat loss takes over due to moisture evaporation. However, both Coals B and C at this flow rate incubate to thermal runaway in a shorter time frame than under sluggish flow. At the medium ventilation flow rate, only Coal B incubates to thermal runaway, albeit after a significant extended period of time. These results show how important it is to determine the heat balance between the coal intrinsic reactivity (as indicated by the R70 value) and moisture content. The results also have implications for the possible location of the ‘critical velocity zone’ and subsequent hotspot development and migration.

Process variables in flotation circuits are outlined with a view to producing mathematical models of circuits. The nature of the kinetics of flotation are discussed and the effect of process variables on the kinetics considered. An approach for a possible model is briefly outlined.

The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

The treatment of mixed lead carbonate and lead sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa presents a problem which is unique ,in the lead smelting world; a problem whose solution is far from simple, and is not yet complete. Two years of study under plant conditions have definitely proved, however, that a most satisfactory sinter can be made in a single-pass roast.The object of this paper is to present a brief record of the development of the single-pass roast and a resume of current practice in the smelting plant. The sintering operation is discussed in greater detail, as it is upon this phase of the work that every item in the smelter operating programme depends.The smelter, to-day, presents a very much simplified layout, equipped for economical, straightforward operation, requiring, however, very careful and constant supervision, due to the extreme delicacy of the sintering operation and to the rapid and wide variati9n in the nature of the concentrates which are to be handled.

This paper presents the results of in-situ and laboratory investigations into a mining method which utilises conventional continuous mining techniques to carry out two passes in thick coal seams, resulting in the development of stable pillars with relatively small width dimensions and heights up to 6 m. Geotechnical investigations included structural mapping, brightness logging and standard laboratory testing. Virgin stress was measured using overcoring techniques. Two approaches to pillar design were used in the study. These were; pillar design based on empirical formulae and laboratory testing, and pillar disign using calibrated mathematical models. A trial panel was developed at 300 m depth to study pillar deformation and stress changes due to mining. The extent of rib deformation was studied using borescopes and extensometers. In-situ geotechnical measurements were used to calibrate displacement discontinuity and finite element mathematical models of the coal seam. These models were then used to predict the behaviour of a small panel of pillars which were to be developed to 6 m height. The mining method was shown to be feasible provided adequate rib support was installed. The benefit of rib support was found to be two-fold, in that it increased confinement of the pillar in zones of low horizontal stress, while reducing horizontal stress relaxation in zones of high horizontal virgin stress. The possiblity of roof control by designing the small pillars to yield on retreat is discussed.
