THIS TALK is a digest of some of the information contained in tables, one on practices and one on costs of shaft sinking, in Bulletin 357 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines written by E. D. Gardner, Supervising Engineer of the Bureau at Tucson, and myself. The table of practices contains information on 43 shafts and the table of costs contains information on 25 shafts. These various shafts were sunk between 1917 and 1930 so they may be termed modern practice with costs applicable in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In the compilation of this material the statistics on shafts which were concreted have been eliminated, as these figures were entirely out of line with corresponding figures for timbered shafts. It is my experience that where costs are divided between sinking and concreting the tendency is to load the costs onto the larger item of concreting. Thus a shifting of costs making an addition of 10 per cent in concreting costs may suffice to make a deduction of 40 per cent in sinking costs. Fine work is done (on the books) and everybody is happy. Most shafts are sunk with three shifts of men per day. Each shift consists of men who are miners, muckers, or timbermen, as chance may call for during their shift. Where pumping or high fixed costs do not necessitate three shifts it is cheaper to sink on two shifts. It is desirable for speed and economy in any case to work out a cycle of operations for each 24 hours. In this way men are hired for their ability as machinemen, muckers, or timbermen; they know exactly what to do and there is no passing the buck to the next shift.

INTRODUCTION Engineering studies of many near surface coal deposits that are amenable to strip mining can be enhanced and expedited by the application of computer techniques for defining coal reserves and overburden and intraburden yardage and their stripping ratios. The case study discussed herein could be from the western coalfields of Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana; the lignite deposits of the Dakotas or Texas, or from the strippable coal seams of the midwest. Because the techniques can be applied so universally, the actual map locations are not identified. The same computing principles apply to one seam or multiseam deposits, and the capability of the computing programs and plotting routines to display the coal seams in plan and sections provide excellent base maps for further engineering planning and mine layout studies. MANAGEMENT OF DRILL HOLE DATA Drilling for coalfield information is usually done at much wider centers than for other mineral deposits. The geologic logs of the holes are generally quite simple, and frequently record only major lithologies and depths to the top and bottom of the coal seams, together with hole collar survey information. A header card is prepared for each drill hole showing: Hole ID Northing Fasting Elevation Azimuth Dip The header card can be followed by any number of downhole lithologic intercept records: [Hole Depth Lithology Hole ID From-To Coal] Less data errors occur if the computer cards are punched directly from drill hole logs, thus eliminating opportunities for mistakes in transcribing data. All arithmetic manipulations should be left to the computer to avoid as much human error as possible. The SURVEY program is run over the raw data file and all lithologic intercepts are computed and defined in XYZ space. At the meeting of the Institute, held at Roanoke, Va., in June, 1883, I gave some facts in relation to charcoal pig iron of unusual strength, made from our carbonate ore taken from the mine at Amenia, N. Y. My object in again bringing the subject to the attention of the Institute, is to obtain, if possible, the solution of a prohlem in connection therewith. Our furnace is of the old type, stone stack 32 feet high by 9 feet 2 inches at top of bosh; bosh about 67O pitch; stone hearth; three tuyeres of 31/4-inch opening; fuel, a mixture of hard and soft coal; blast about & to # pound pressure, and heated to 400' to 600° Fahr. by iron pipe oven on top of stack. The analysis of the roasted carbonate ore, as before given to the Institute, is as follows:

(written discussion*).-The attention of members may well be called by Allen to his discoveries, which affect not only correlations in Michigan but, as I have pointed out,1 the use of names like "Animikie" which are widely applied. It shows that one disadvantage of the wide use of locality names is that local discoveries may show that they are inappropriate. The Wewe hills were found not to contain the Wewe slate! So we note that Allen, in his correlation, drops the term Animikie, which his researches indicate covers both middle and upper Huronian: It would seem well, then, in dividing the Huronian or Proterozoic, to use, as Allen does, terms like upper, middle, and lower Huronian, or newer, middle, and early, which may be shortened into eo-, mio-, and neo-Huronian rather than to carry local terms far away; or we shall soon be

A discussion of the paper published in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 20, March, 1908, pp. 227 to 237, and No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 615 to 620. PROF. HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Hibbard's definition of steel would be the best yet offered were it not for its one defect, the vagueness or equivocalness of "fusion-process." Puddling is surely in one sense a fusion-process, and so are the charcoal-hearth or knobbling-processes. But what he says suggests the following definition, which seems to me a good one: " Steel: any variety of iron which is usefully malleable at least at some one temperature, and is either cast when molten into a malleable mass, or if not so cast can be much hardened by sudden cooling." It is not necessary in a definition that quantitative bounds should be set up, for instance, that the exact height at which dwarf apple-trees cease and standards begin, or at which hills cease and mountains begin, should be stated. These quantitative measures are proper for specifications and contracts, but are not necessary for purposes such as the present. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J. UNTIL June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C., the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. In order to increase the production, and to reduce its cost, the Anthracite Fuel Company was compelled to change most of its plant, and to erect more powerful machinery, producing lumps of a larger size, almost twice the size of the lumps made previously by the same company. This story of the salting of a supposed diamond mine is a part of our Western history and deserves to be recorded in this book. It was more than a local affair, because it was concerned with persons in London and New York, as well as San Francisco. Part of the story has been told by Asbury Harpending in a little book published 12 years ago. Harpending (who died at New York in 1923) was in London in March, 1872, when he received a cable dispatch from William C. Ralston, the president of the Bank of California, stating that "a vast diamond field" had been discovered "in a remote section of the United States". Before starting for San Francisco, Harpending had an interview with Baron Rothschild, who showed a lively interest in the story, which was as follows: two weather-beaten prospectors went to the Bank of California and deposited some uncut diamonds and rubies for safe keeping; these precious stones were estimated to be worth $125,000. The men said that they had found the gems in "a desert portion of the West". They departed quietly, but the story was told in business circles; whereupon George D. Roberts, a mining engineer of wide experience and an associate of Ralston, sought an interview with the prospectors. One of them proved to be a man that had been in the employ of Roberts. Both prospectors, named Slack and Arnold, appeared "coy and cautious"; they were "simpleminded fellows", and were "afraid to trust anyone with the momentous secret ". They refused to divulge the place of discovery and declined "to part with their rights", but later "they became more amenable to reason" and expressed willingness to sell a half interest to

W. F. Hosford, (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) —evelopment of methods for predicting the plastic anisotropy of textured metals is an important step toward the improvement of properties by texture control. The engineering value of the present analysis is indicated by the good agreement between prediction and experimental findings. The purpose of this discussion, however, is to point out the weakness of the assumptions on which the analysis is based. The authors state that "the relative width and thickness strains are believed to depend only on the slip direction" and accordingly they disregard the orientation of the active slip plane. where E,, cW, and et are the tensile, width, and thickness strains, A,, A,, and At are the angles between the tensile axis x, the width direction w, and the thickness direction t, respectively; and G,, GW, and 4 are the angles between the slip-plane normal and x, w, and t, respectively. Therefore, the ratio of width to thickness strains resulting from slip on a single system would be These relations hold regardless of whether the slip plane is a crystallographic plane of the {110}, (1121, or (123) type or whether noncrystallographic slip occurs. If noncrystallographic slip occurs, it might be reasonable to assume that the effective slip plane is the most highly stressed plane containing the slip direction. FOR several years, the Bureau of Standards has been working in cooperation with an Advisory Committee on non-ferrous metals on various phases of the production and testing of zinc bronzes. The work has dealt, especially with the type of metal known as "Admiralty bronze" in England and as "Government bronze" in this country and consisting of 88 copper, 10 tin, and 2 zinc. Several reports have been made on this subject and these should be considered in connection with this paper.1 FIRST SERIES OF FIVE FOUNDRY TESTS A very brief summary of the first series of five foundry tests has been made,2 but for the sake of clearness the results are given here in different form. The five foundries cooperating in this investigation were: Ohio Brass Co., Mansfield, Ohio; Titanium Alloy Mfg. Co., Niagara Falls, N. Y.; Packard Motor Car Co., Syracuse, N. Y.; National Cash Register Co., Dayton, Ohio; Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. The object of the work was to determine whether uniform results could be obtained with this alloy in different foundries working under definite instructions. One of the participating foundries prepared, from virgin metal, a stock of ingots of the composition 88 copper, 10 tin, 2 zinc, and at the same time poured nine test bars from this melt of virgin metal. The results of the physical tests of these bars are shown in Table 1. Examination of this table shows that the highest and most nearly uniform results were obtained when the virgin metal was cast flat in chill molds and the lowest and most variable results were encountered when it was cast vertical in green-sand molds. IN an important paper on The Critical Ranges of Pure Iron1 presented at the May, 1913, meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, Professor Carpenter reports and illustrates the results obtained by him in determining the critical points of some very pure electrolytic iron sheet about 0.01 in. thick. The iron strip was rolled into the form of a cylinder 1; in. long and fn in. wide, weighing 42 g., the thermo-couple being inserted in a small hole in the center. The points Ac3 and Ar3 were readily detected, as well as the point Art, but the point Act was absent from every heating curve. The author concluded from this occurrence that the conception of A2 as an independent allotropic change must be abandoned. At the October, 1913, meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Dr. G. K. Burgess and J. J. Crowe read a paper on The Critical Ranges A2 and A3 of Pure Iron2 in which they described some extremely important experiments conducted by them at the Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. They tested Professor Carpenter's electrolytic iron and detected a sharp and well-defined absorption of heat corresponding to the point Act. Professor Carpenter's failure to detect this point is explained by them on the ground that unless the iron be in a single piece entirely surrounding and in contact with the thermo-couple junction, the thermo-couple will integrate the irregular progress of the heat through the sample and the curves will lose their sharpness. In discussing Messrs. Burgess and Crowe's paper, Professor Carpenter accepted this explanation as probably accounting for the absence of Act in his heating curves.

M. S. Fisher and D. R. F. West (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, England)—It may be of value to compare certain features of the results recorded in this very interesting paper with those of an investigation11 involving determinations of temperature gradients and rates of solidification of steel blocks of 3 in. sq section, cast horizontally in sand molds, some of which contained chills. Castings in plain carbon steels containing up to 0.8 pct C were made and, throughout this range of compositions, both inverse-rate and direct cooling curves, obtained from thermocouples placed within the mold cavity, showed a major arrest, the temperature of which was taken as the "effective liquidus" for the particular steel in question, solidifying under the conditions of the investigation. At the completion of the arrest, the curves showed a comparatively rapid de- crease in temperature. Some of the steels investigated lay within the peritectic region, and a second arrest at 1485°C was detected. In Fig. 15, which shows the effective liquidus temperatures, the limit of the 8 + liquid field has been placed at approximately 0.5 pct C. In inverse-rate curves corresponding to the thermal center of each casting, there was always a discontinuity, viz: an abrupt change of slope, at a temperature about 10 to 20°C below the "liquidus arrest," after which there seemed to be no significant irregularity in the rate of cooling. Curves corresponding to other positions in the casting generally showed some irregularities below the main arrest, probably as a result of heat flow from the solidifying interior. Even the reproducible discontinuity in the curves for the central positions appeared to have no theoretical or practical significance, though it probably corresponded to a stage in the solidification process at which only a relatively small amount of interdendritic liquid remained. During colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still functioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned prospects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investigate the validity of the reports. According to the reports of Baron Eschwege, he succeeded in extracting some 30,000 Oitavos (about 105 kg.) during the first few years, but the production costs exceeded the value of the gold obtained.

The Institute makes liberal provision for inclusion of engineering students through individual Student Associate membership. Such members pay $2 per year, receive MINING AND METALLURGY, may purchase Technical Publications at reduced rates, have the privilege of attending all meetings and are furnished a distinctive badge in the form of a watch fob. Provision is also made for the affiliation of organized student societies in recognized schools of engineering, chemistry, geology and related sciences. In order to qualify for affiliation it is not necessary that all members of the society become Student Associates since the individual members of the society are not listed as members of the Institute. However, a large majority of the members of many of the societies are also Student Associate Members of the Institute. Among the things that the Institute does for the affiliated societies are the following: (a) A copy of each issue of MINING AND METALLURGY is furnished to the society; (b) Reports of the meetings and activities of the society are reported in MINING AND METALLURGY; (c) Assistance is given by the Institute in obtaining speakers for the meetings of the society; (d) The name of the society and of its officers is listed in the annual Directory and other publications of the Institute; and (e) Members of the society are given the use of the Engineering Societies Employment Service. Student organizations, desiring to be recognized as affiliated student societies of the Institute, should make application to the Secretary, giving particulars as to the nature of their organization, of their membership, and their officers. The accompanying list on page 21 gives the names of the affiliated student societies, their presidents and their secretaries, as of April 16, 1933.

THE technical sessions at the Regional Meeting of the A.I.M.E. in San Francisco are to be de- voted LO changes, current or predictable, which may be expected to alter today's practices in mining and metallurgical engineering. Our present condition may be summarized as follows: Capacity to produce is excessive for domestic needs in molybdenum, copper, iron, and oil; sufficient in lead, zinc, and potash; deficient in aluminum, manganese, tungsten, chromium, and tin. Gold and silver are complicated by their use as money. Or, to look at it in another way, the "growth curles" of production, as C. K. Leith emphasizes, characteristically rise slowly at the beginning, show a second stage of rapid growth, and a third stage of leveling off. The third stage is already reached here in coal. copper, iron, lead, and zinc. But still in the second slage are oil, molybdenum, potash, and others.

EARLY in November attention was focused on the interchange of views between Paris and Wash- ington with respect to the proposed examination of Germany's capacity to pay. It appeared finally that the limits imposed by the French were too narrow and consequently the conversations were discontinued. In Germany there were stirring events. Hitler, with Ludendorf in the open, attempted a coup d'etat in Bavaria, but failed quickly and ignominiously. The former crown prince re-entered Germany, with the sanction of the republic, and took up his abode at his castle in Silesia. On Nov. 13 Chancellor Stresemann informed repre-sentatives of the Rhineland and the Ruhr that those territories thenceforth must shift for themselves politically, economically and financially, the federal treasury being no longer capable of caring for unem-ployment in the occupied territory. This was equiva-lent to putting the burden of supporting the people of that region upon. France and Belgium. There have been negotiations toward the creation of a Rhenish-Westphalian state, independent of Prussia, but under the sovereignty of the Reich. Failing to receive a vote of confidence at the end of this month, the Stresemann Ministry resigned. President Ebert considers it may be necessary to create a government independent of Parliamentary authority. The Ruhr Industrialists have signed an agreement with France until April 15, 1924 by which they have agreed to pay back coal taxes for the first ten months of this year, and deliver 18 per cent. of their production as reparations until the expiration of the agreement. The British government found itself in a precarious position with respect to support and a dissolution of Parliament was announced, with a general election to occur early in December.

From the abstract, "A realistic ore deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework." Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and southwestern Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in [Fig. 1]. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Gulernan, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran.

Of the two methods of mechanical reduction—that of percussion and that of abrasion—it is not easy to say which was first employed by primeval man. The stone hammer and the flat or hollowed stone used for grinding are found together in the remains of prehistoric periods. But the use of the maray, or bucking-stone, developed from the hammer, was probably introduced later than that of crude millstones. Diodorus Siculus, the Roman historian of the first century B. c., mentions such millstones as used in the mines of Egypt to pulverize material which had been previously broken in a mortar. The invention of the arrastra for fine grinding is declared by some authorities to have been made by Bartolomeo de Medina, at Pachuca, Mexico, about A. D. 1557—which is quite probable. Being the first to amalgamate silver on anything like a business scale, he must have felt the necessity for oregrinding apparatus of greater capacity than the old primitive millstones; and the arrastra was thus the natural successor of the millstone. It is very unfortunate that the archives of Pachuca, which has made so much history in ore-treatment, were destroyed in some one of the many insurrections for which, also, the place is renowned. The first application of the stamp to the crushing of rock is asserted by some writers to have been the invention of a Saxon nobleman named Von Maltitz, about the year 1505. Better authenticated reference, however, is made to one Paul Gronstetter, a native of Schwarz, and called an ingenious worker, who, in the year 1519, established at Joachimsthal a process of wet stamping and sifting. Two years later, a larger plant was established at the came place. It is said that he had previously introduced the same device at Schneeberg. How much of the invention was due to Gronstetter is not certain;

The Institute offers two distinct relationships to. students: one is an individual relationship as a Student Associate; and the other is a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Student Chapters of the AIME This individual relationship is set forth in Section 8 of Article I of the AIME Bylaws, as follows "A student in good standing in an approved school, who has been nominated by at least three instructors of the nominee (one of whom must be an Institute member), may affiliate with the Institute as a Student Associate by payment of $4.50 annual fee, for which he shall receive one monthly journal and be privileged to attend meetings of the Institute and to use the Engineering Societies Library and the Personnel Service A student may remain such until December 31 of the year in which he ceases to be in university residence as a student "
