Strip mining in the domestic coal industry is contributing a greater proportion bf overall production than at any time in the past. U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics show that the percentage of total production mined in 1958 by stripping methods increased to more than 30 pct, up from 22 pct in 1951. The tendency to favor strip and open pit mining exists in other mining activities, but such trends are not as clearly outlined as in the coal industry. Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically. Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating overburden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely).

Two unique processes of reclaiming zinc from various secondary materials were developed and have successfully been operated for years by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. These processes were established based on the characteristic and local energy conditions; i.e., (1) at Miike Smelter, located above the largest coal deposit in Japan, a combination of slag fuming and semi-blast furnace (MF)processes takes advantage of using coal and the carbon bearing briquette residue from the vertical retort plant as reducing agents, (2) on the other hand, at Kamioka Smelter, a direct reduction of zinc-bearing lead slag by using electric furnaces is of advantage in view of cheap electric power supply from our own hydraulic power plants. The former also consumes lots of zinc bearing fines and drosses from various steel plants, fabricators and secondary zinc smelters, while the latter, zinc leach residue from its own electrolytic plant

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsyl¬vania, about 1 1/2 miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. GEOLOGICAL SKETCH OF THE TERRITORY TO BE WORKED BY THE SHAFTS AND REASON FOR SINKING THEM. The Mammoth or E Vein of the anthracite coal-measures in that part of the Schuylkill region near and north of the town of Pottsville lies at a great depth below the surface, and has, in consequence, never been worked in that locality.

IF New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a. mineral district in Southeastern Maine, I would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1).

It is a common observation among those engaged in the ironbusiness, that the lower (i.e., the less graphitic) grades of pigiron show a rough face on the pig. As such irons are always low in silicon, the generally accepted belief is, that this rough face is due to the absence of silicon. Certain investigations, however, made by the writer on Embreville pig-iron, and extending over nearly a year's time, seem to indicate another cause, namely, the giving-off of included gases, particularly sulphurous oxide (SO2,). It is, of course, the tendency of such gases to rise through the iron, escaping into the air; and the more liquid the iron, and the longer it remains liquid, the greater the chance for such escape. The lower grades of iron, being always colder, tend to solidify early, and before the included gases can completely escape.

"The most conservative persons I ever met are college undergraduates." Woodrow Wilson said that in 1905. No one is saying anything like it today. Chaos on the campus was a cliche of the sixties. Since 1905, education has expanded in every direction. Many more people are being educated for much longer periods of time. The school-leaving age has risen from 14 years to 20 years, on an average. Many are in school until after their 25th birthday. On the surface this situation appears all to the good. Our technical society needs a massive yearly infusion of semitrained (or educated, if you prefer) new blood. The efficiency of our economy and our standard of living are tied to high individual productivity which can be achieved only with an educated work force. Our democratic institutions are said to be founded on an educated electorate.

A good mining engineer is supposed to make a good mine. What then makes a good mining engineer? There certainly are a lot of answers to that question. The answers depend on whether you are one, work for one, or employ one. There are several cliches about mining engineers, and there is some truth in them-as there usually is in any stereotype. Hollywood chose Jeff Chandler to portray a mining engineer in Foxfire. The image here was of an almost one-man mining operation. When Chandler picked up a jackhammer, cradled it in his gut and started drilling out a tunnel round, it gave one the hives. I would have liked to see him finish just one round that way. There are limits to what even the most hairy-chested of us will try. We can assume that Hollywood feels it needs to over- draw any profession to add impact.

Aside from having a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in acquiring this is the presence of good mechanics-men who have a desire to be mechanics and who want to know more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. The knowledge and ability to be found in a good mechanic is the result of ambition, curiosity, and determination. With these qualities as a start, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career if he begins learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. The path is rough, but the goal is rewarding. Mining machinery probably absorbs as much or more abuse than any other heavy equipment in use today. And when one considers the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it can be seen that the mine operator needs the best of men and tools to perform the service. MOTORS AND POWER SUPPLY Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were large, heavy-framed, open d-c motors (direct current), using a series or shunt winding. A motor having one or more field coils connected in series and themselves in series with the armature, is called a series motor (Fig. 1). The series motor had the advantage of quickly developing starting torque, and it was, and still is, the best motor for locomotive or shuttle car tramming service. The series motor, however, speeds up as the load is reduced and, if not properly controlled, can overspeed. The shunt motor, as its name implies, has one or more field coils in

DESPITE the large amount of study which has been devoted to the subject our present knowledge of the copper-oxygen system remains incomplete and unsatisfactory in many respects. This applies particu-larly to those regions in which solid metallic copper exists. The primary object of the present paper is the contribution of new information relative to the solid solubility of oxygen (or cuprous oxide) in copper at atmospheric pressure, together with certain observations in the low-pressure regions of the system. It seems appropriate also to present a brief summary of the outstanding previous work on the constitution of mixtures of copper with its lowest oxide in order to show the relation between the new facts and the system as a whole. The earliest recorded investigations of the copper-oxygen system are those of M. S. Lucas (1) § and of M. Chevillot(2) in 1819 and 1820. Lucas believed that liquid copper is capable of dissolving its oxide, but neither he nor Chevillot was able to furnish convincing proof of this property. It was not until 1866 that T. Graham° definitely established the existence of such a solubility. Nine years later W. Hampe(4) measured its extent and roughly outlined the copper-rich portion of the system. The first really precise examination of the constitutional relationship between copper and cuprous oxide, however, was that of E. Heyn(5) who in 1900 published a temperature-concentration diagram covering the range from 0 to 10 per cent of cuprous oxide at atmospheric pressure. Within these limits of composition cuprous oxide was found to dissolve in liquid copper, forming at 3.4 to 3.5 per cent a eutectic which melted at 1065° C. R. E. Slade and F. D. Two comprehensive papers have appeared regarding the forms of copper that occur in smelter slags, one by Frank E. Lathe1 and the other by C. G. Maier and G. D. Van Arsdale.2 These authors comment on other published results and draw conclusions from their own investigations. The development of X-ray examination of minerals and improvement in high-power microscopic methods make it possible today to get additional evidence by means that were not available to earlier investigators. The present work was confined to reverberatory slags obtained from five different plants. Some definite conclusions were reached regarding the forms of copper present in these slags. In most cases these agree with some of the findings of Maier and Van Arsdale but new methods of attack were used in the investigation. Conclusions of Previous Investigators Various important conclusions reached by previous investigators are summarized in the following paragraphs, arranged chronologically. William A. Heywood:3 Slag losses increase with grade of matte but with the same grade of matte losses decrease as the acidity of the slag increases. Lewis T. Wright:' Slag losses are only partly due to prills of matte. It is suggested that part of the copper is dissolved in the slag. J. Parke Channing9 A considerable part of the copper enters the slag as silicate or oxide and not as sulfide. C. A. Grabill:6 Slag losses are both physical and chemical. Physical losses, due to poor settling, gas flotation and slight differences in specific gravity, are small under normal conditions. Chemical losses may- be due to formation of oxides or to solution of metals and sulfides. The last is considered the most important. John W. James:' The copper in converter slag is largely the oxide and as such enters the reverberatory slag when converter slag is added to the charge.

Considerable interest has been shown, during recent years, in the possibilities of developing oil fields in the South American Republics, now that the exhaustion of our present fields can be seen in the not very distant future. The demand for fuel 011 and its products has been increasing far more rapidly than our increment of production during the last few years. Increase of consumption has been largely curtailed by the lack of sufficient supply. The main factors that have contributed to our previous neglect of the southern fields have been as follows: (a) Lack of sufficient demand for the product. (b) Competition with producing fields, having large production, low cost, and better geographical position, such as Tampico, Mexico. (c) Greater interest in home fields with ready market at hand. (d) Our ignorance of southern economic and geologic conditions, due to the distance between those areas and our financial centers. (e) Economic conditions in the southern countries, necessitating high costs of exploration and exploitation of the fields. (f) Our lack of understanding of the business methods of the Latin-American. It must be borne in mind that the oil-development work done to the present time in South America has, with one exception,' been undertaken upon lands which possessed direct evidence of oil in seepages or asphaltic deposits, occurring either immediately upon the lands or in their close vicinity. The development of oil fields in South America is therefore in the pioneer stage. It is not at all improbable that "hidden fields" will be uncovered in future work, as has occurred notably in the mid-continental field of this country within recent years. For many years, coal has been known to exist in the valley of the Sabinas river, in the State of Coahuila, and for about 15 years it has been worked by the Mexican International Railway Co., which opened mines for its own fuel-supply when the railway was built, and has been mining continuously ever since. The coal-basin worked by this company lies along the Sabinas river, principally on the SW. side. It covers a wide area and has been carefully prospected, but only in a few parts have the beds been found sufficiently thick and regular for economical operation. This Sabinas basin was considered the only one in this field, until, in the Spring of 1899, the Las Esperanzas basin was found by Messrs. J. L. Elliot and E. D. Peters, who were in Mexico looking after some copper-properties. After a further examination by Mr. James T. Gardiner, of New York, the Mexican Coal & Coke Co. was organized in June, and active work was begun on Nov. 5, 1899. The coal-field of Las Esperanzas, situated in the State of Coahuila, about 85 miles SW. of Eagle Pass, Texas, adjoins and runs parallel with the Sabinas basin—an anticlinal separating the two outcrops by about 2 miles. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the basin. The coal-formation is in the Upper Cretaceous, and corresponds with the Laramie measures of the United States. Hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature 01 the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on steel sheets and wire. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schuelerl by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva. nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase. Since the extensive review of the iron-zinc alloys presented a few years ago,3 much new work has been published, some of which5-l6 was too late to be included in the recent edition (1939) of the American Society for Metals' Handbook.4 Figs. 1 and 2 are reproductions of the latest iron-zinc diagram proposed by Schramml1 as a result of his investigations by microscopic, thermal, magnetic susceptibility and X-ray methods. Table 1 summarizes all the known published X-ray data of the phases Present. The solubility of iron in zinc has been determined by x-ray methods.10 In the same manner the homogeneity range of the P phase was studiedlo using the principle that the parameter of an intermetallic compound changes while the concentration of One of the constituents changes. C.-Observation made after examination of a number of defective gun forgings, together with a history of their manufacture, has strongly suggested that so-called "flakes" and woody or fibrous fractures are not necessarily analogous and are often caused by entirely different conditions. While some flaked bars may show fibrous areas in the fracture, it does not necessarily follow that the conditions causing these areas are the same as cause the fibrous, or so-called laminated, structures so commonly met in gun forgings subject to transverse tensile test; the fibrous structure formed in some flaky bars are merely incidental to the conditions causing the flakes. It is believed that the so-called flakes, or bright silvery spots, are mainly due to inherent physical defects in the steel, which existed at the very origin of the steel, rather than metallographic defects caused by subsequent irregularities in mechanical or thermal treatment. While great care in forging and treatment may, in a measure, tend to overcome the evil effect of the defects, with many heats of ingots, no such precautionary measures are needed to produce perfect forgings- and with such heats of steel it would be impossible, no matter how carelessly handled, to produce intentionally a forging containing the defects commonly known as flakes. It has been found possible, on several occasions, to actually predict flaky forgings from an inspection f the ingot after it had solidified, and in such cases no amount of careful forging or heat treatment would prevent the occurrence of such defects in the forging. The inspection of the physical condition of the ingot, and especially the character of the shrinkage on. the top of the ingot, has been given too little thought and study in this connection.

AMONG the fellow prospectors of Black Jack Newman, locator of the claims that became the Miami mine, were J. D. Coplen and Bud Woodson. Woodson was in the district when the Bloody Tanks Indian massacre occurred, near the present town of Miami. He was a prospector long before Jack Newman worked in a mine, and for years he had done assessment work on some of the claims that Coplen acquired for his Inspiration company. Woodson recalls that a Scotch geologist from Morenci once visited his claims; and that the geologist tried to get the Phelps Dodge company interested in the property, but without success. Coplen interested some people in Kansas City in his claims that lay west of Newman's. He induced them to organize the Inspiration Mining Co., and by 1908 this company controlled 23 claims, which had been prospected in desultory fashion by a series of adits. One of these, near the Keystone property, encountered some lean copper-bearing rock, but later development failed to disclose any substantial quantity of ore at this particular point. Coplen, as general manager, in September, 1908, was negotiating with several exploration companies which at the time were on the lookout for low-grade copper properties. As a matter of fact, when J. Parke Channing visited Globe, in December, 1906, F. C. Alsdorf showed him the Inspiration claims as well as Newman's. Channing evinced little interest in an option on Inspiration because he could get so much better terms from Newman. He decided to concentrate his work on the Newman claims, with the idea that if he were successful in developing ore, he could later get Inspiration on terms at least equally good. Subsequently, the United States Smelting & Refining Co., which has since added "Mining" to its corporate name, took an option on Inspiration.

This paper has been prepared at the suggestion of Mr. Dunbar D. Scott, to supplement his " Evolution of Mine-Surveying Instruments."† Before entering into a detailed history of solar instruments, a few remarks will be made touching upon land-surveys in general, and on what has led to the development of these instruments.The oxidation of metals melted in contact with air takes place with dissimilar results. Tin, lead or zinc are examples of a class, the oxides of which float on the surface of the melted metal. First a film is produced, which covers the surface; then, if agitation from any cause exposes new metal to the action of the air, additional oxidation takes place, and the film is increased in volume. This change goes on until a considerable quantity of oxide (or " dross," as it is technically called) is formed; depending, of course, upon the duration of the exposure of the metal to the atmosphere. When such metals are poured, the dross may be skimmed off; and clean metal will be left underneath. The removal of such oxides is, therefore, merely a mechanical process. In the case of copper, however, the result is quite different. The sub-oxide of copper (Cu2O) is readily soluble in molten copper; and therefore, instead of the formation of a film of oxide, to be finally removed as dross, the surface of the metal remains bright and clear, because the oxide has been dissolved as soon as it was produced. It is customary in the process of copper-refining to leave a small quantity of oxide in the metal, in order to oxidize any traces of bismuth, arsenic or antimony which have not been entirely removed. Very often important discoveries are made in one industry that may be used to advantage in another, but, owing to the rarity that men step out of one industry into another, these discoveries remain unknown outside of the trade or profession in which they are made. The present paper is written solely with the object of bringing to the notice of mining and metallurgical engineers a centrifugal ore-concentrator which eventually may have a great application. Ore- Grading. Fig. 1 represents the action which takes place when solids of different dimensions are stirred up in a box and allowed to settle as minerals of the same size but of different specific gravity. This principle is applied practically in grading china-clay and in enriching tin-slimes. In the latter case the slimes are stirred around in a tub with water and allowed to settle while at the same time the side of the tub is struck with a hammer. The colloidal slimes are then poured off and various slices taken off horizontally. The great drawback of this process is that the particles are deposited horizontally and all the colloids are lost. Fig. 2 represents the action in which the particles are deposited side by side. Here the drawback is the great length of the box needed in order to prevent excessive loss. The alternative to lengthening the box is to increase the force of gravity. Centrifugal force may be regarded practically as the force of gravity augmented. Fig. 3 illustrates the Gee centrifugal machine for grading ores. THE record of the development of physical metallurgy since the founding of this Institute embraces by far the greater part of physical metallurgy as this subject is recognized today. Yet it is not to be supposed that the metallurgist interested in the properties and behavior of solid metals at the beginning of this period was without important and even fundamental information. He had an empirical knowledge of the behavior of solid metals which extended backward into prehistoric times and he had the early beginnings of many of the chapters in the science of metals. Industry was burgeoning in many directions, for methods had been developed, especially in the manufacture of steel that provided materials in extremely large tonnages, permitting applications of metallic materials on a very widespread scale. These multitudinous new uses of metals created an increased interest in the behavior of metals, and provided the basis for the rapid development of a science of metals. Indeed, the development of science generally that accompanied the industrial revolution reached a flood tide toward the end of the century, furnishing the metallurgist basic principles in chemistry, physics, mechanics, and crystallography that would shortly be extensively applied to metallic behavior. In this account, the early developments in the wide metallurgical field will be traced, in order that the status of physical metallurgy in 1871, when this Institute was founded, may be clearly seen. The subject of metallurgy in antiquity has been written upon frequently and at length. We shall here no more than indicate the main features that we need to define the position in 1871 and to provide a proper background for discussing subsequent developments.
